ALL SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS SCHOOL PHOTOS Our school photos will be taken on Wednesday 23 July. All students (K12) receive a set of photos which were included in the school fees. PreKindy students who would like a set of photos, along with anyone who would like a sibling photo taken, needs to collect an envelope from the office to complete, include payment and return. Any questions about the photo system can be made to Mrs Harvey in the school office. BEING A POSITIVE SCHOOL Recently released Australian government research has revealed that approximately 1 in 7 primary and 1 in 4 secondary school students in Australia suffers from a mental illness. Also, almost 80% of all mental illness in Australia is diagnosed prior to a person turning 25, meaning that all schools, including KAS, have a frontline role in creating contexts where children are able develop appropriate thinking and selfawareness skills to reduce the likelihood of mental illness occurring. There is now a growing call for all schools in Australia to adopt wholeofschool wellbeing programs based upon the very clear and positive impact that attitude and mindset can play, not only in a child’s educational achievement levels, but also in their broader mental health. It is anticipated that wholeofschool wellbeing programs will become mandated in Australia within the next 5 years. At KAS, our ethos as an Adventist school is closely linked to the concept of holistic education for all students. However, we should never rest on our laurels, believing that the achievements of the past, or our current practice, is the best that we are capable of in the key area of preparing students to appropriately cope with, and even thrive amongst, the many and varied challenges that life will present them with. The Australian government has a number of programs such as Kids Matter, MindMatters and SenseAbility that are designed to support schools in the key area of student wellbeing. Several of the key strategies of these programs are listed below, most of which are capably covered in a range of programs already operating in our school: Giving students a voice Encouraging collaboration Encouraging diversity Supporting appropriate risk Helping to build a sense of mastery Supporting intrinsic motivation with a focus on detail Valuing strength building Reducing judgments and extrinsic rewards Looking ahead to our 2015 School Improvement Plan, with a focus on seeking to support every student at KAS to become the best person that they can be, moving towards the implementation of a researchbased, wholeofschool wellbeing program will be a key priority. Ensuring that KAS is, and remains, a positive school and a positive experience for each of our students should be a core focus for each one of us, regardless of our role in our broader school community. Best wishes for the midyear break. I’ll look forward to seeing you back at KAS on Thursday 17 July for the first day of Term 3. ADVERTISING OF DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (PRIMARY) POSITION Mrs Joyanne Walsh has made a decision to step away from her current Assistant Principal’s role at the end of the 2014 school year. During Mrs Walsh’s tenure of leading the primary school, the program has been transformed from a small multigrade classroom school to what will be a PreKindy and doublestreamed Primary school in 2015. Throughout that time, Mrs Walsh has led with a passion for learning, compassion for her students and a strong belief in the capacity and value of her team. She will leave a thriving primary school as her legacy and will be missed by all at KAS. To help ensure a smooth transition occurs as we move towards 2015, a decision has been taken to advertise a Deputy Principal (Primary) position nationally now, with a view to finalizing the selection process by midTerm 3. Mrs Walsh will be appropriately acknowledged for her significant contribution to KAS as we move closer towards the end of the school year. Yours Faithfully Rohan Deanshaw Principal
