ALL SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
SCHOOL PHOTOS Our school photos will be taken on Wednesday 23 July. All students (K‐12) receive a set of photos which were included in the school fees. Pre‐Kindy students who would like a set of photos, along with anyone who would like a sibling photo taken, needs to collect an envelope from the office to complete, include payment and return. Any questions about the photo system can be made to Mrs Harvey in the school office.
BEING A POSITIVE SCHOOL Recently released Australian government research has revealed that approximately 1 in 7 primary and 1 in 4 secondary school stu‐dents in Australia suffers from a mental illness. Also, almost 80% of all mental illness in Australia is diagnosed prior to a person turn‐ing 25, meaning that all schools, including KAS, have a frontline role in creating contexts where children are able develop appropri‐ate thinking and self‐awareness skills to reduce the likelihood of mental illness occurring. There is now a growing call for all schools in Australia to adopt whole‐of‐school wellbeing programs based upon the very clear and positive impact that attitude and mindset can play, not only in a child’s educational achievement levels, but also in their broader mental health. It is anticipated that whole‐of‐school wellbeing programs will become mandated in Australia within the next 5 years. At KAS, our ethos as an Adventist school is closely linked to the concept of holistic education for all students. However, we should never rest on our laurels, believing that the achievements of the past, or our current practice, is the best that we are capable of in the key area of preparing students to appropriately cope with, and even thrive amongst, the many and varied challenges that life will present them with. The Australian government has a number of programs such as Kids Matter, MindMatters and SenseAbility that are designed to sup‐port schools in the key area of student wellbeing. Several of the key strategies of these programs are listed below, most of which are capably covered in a range of programs already operating in our school:
Giving students a voice
Encouraging collaboration
Encouraging diversity
Supporting appropriate risk
Helping to build a sense of mastery
Supporting intrinsic motivation with a focus on detail
Valuing strength building
Reducing judgments and extrinsic rewards Looking ahead to our 2015 School Improvement Plan, with a focus
on seeking to support every student at KAS to become the best per‐son that they can be, moving towards the implementation of a research‐based, whole‐of‐school wellbeing program will be a key priority. Ensuring that KAS is, and remains, a positive school and a positive experience for each of our students should be a core focus for each one of us, regardless of our role in our broader school community. Best wishes for the mid‐year break. I’ll look forward to seeing you back at KAS on Thursday 17 July for the first day of Term 3.
ADVERTISING OF DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (PRIMARY) POSITION Mrs Joyanne Walsh has made a decision to step away from her cur‐rent Assistant Principal’s role at the end of the 2014 school year. During Mrs Walsh’s tenure of leading the primary school, the pro‐gram has been transformed from a small multi‐grade classroom school to what will be a PreKindy and double‐streamed Primary school in 2015. Throughout that time, Mrs Walsh has led with a passion for learning, compassion for her students and a strong belief in the capacity and value of her team. She will leave a thriving pri‐mary school as her legacy and will be missed by all at KAS. To help ensure a smooth transition occurs as we move towards 2015, a decision has been taken to advertise a Deputy Principal (Primary) position nationally now, with a view to finalizing the selec‐tion process by mid‐Term 3. Mrs Walsh will be appropriately acknowledged for her significant contribution to KAS as we move closer towards the end of the school year. Yours Faithfully Rohan Deanshaw Principal

NEWSLETTER GOING ELECTRONIC The administration of the school have decided that as of the start of Term Three the newsletter will no longer be published in paper format. Parents will be able to receive a newsletter through email, the school website or the KAS Skoolbag app on their iPhones or smart phones. Lately, you should have been receiving an email each week with the newsletter attached. If you haven’t been receiving it, let us know your email address as we may not have it on our data base. The school website is www.kas.nsw.edu.au and the newslet‐ter is usually posted on Tuesday afternoon. If you haven’t got our Skoolbag app just go to your app store and search Kempsey Advent‐ist School Skoolbag. In the event that families have no access to internet, they can re‐quest a copy of the newsletter sent home with their child. To do this please contact our school office.

FRASER ISLAND Our Yr 10 group are currently participating in the hike part of their trip. We have limited contact with them because they have satel‐lite phones which are very safe but also quite expensive. We’re praying for their safety and praising God for the great weather forecast there this week.
FIJI TRIP Our Yr 11 group experienced life in a village over the weekend and are now back at the school participating in a Week of Worship program and teaching in the classrooms. There has been some rain while they’ve been there but we’re hoping that clears soon. Please keep these students in your prayers as they participate in the many opportunities they are given in Fiji.
SUBJECT SELECTION YR 8 GOING INTO YR 9 IN 2015 Early in Term Three, information about choosing elective subjects in Year 9 in 2015 will be sent home for families to consider. Choos‐ing electives in Years 9 and 10 is an excellent way for students to try out different subjects to get a feel for what they enjoy and are good at before specializing in areas of interest in Years 11 and 12. While we have run an evening in past years, this year detailed information will be sent home. Any parents/caregivers and stu‐dents who require further information are welcome to make an appointment time with Mrs Sharon Ison (Stage 4 Dean) at the Parent Teacher Student interviews on 21 July to discuss possible choices. Please follow instructions on how to book.
SUBJECT SELECTION YR 10 GOING INTO YR 11 in 2015 This year, all Year Ten students along with their families, are in‐vited to make an appointment with a dean to discuss career path‐ways and subjects to choose in 2015. In past years we have held an evening, which some families have been able to attend. This year, we would like to provide a more personalized service. Mr David Afele, as the Stage 5 Dean, will be coordinating the deans and Mrs Lesic, as Assistant Principal will also be available to meet with families from 28th July‐15th August 2014. More information will be coming early in Term Three detailing how to book a time.
YR 10 (YR 11 2015) INFORMATION NIGHT Our Information Night which was advertised for 28 July has been superseded by the information in the note above.
YRS 7‐10 PARENT TEACHER STUDENT INTERVIEW NIGHT As scheduled in our 2014 KAS SCHOOL CALENDAR, this evening will be held on Monday 21 July. Details on how to start booking electronically will be issued before the end of the week and will be released by email, Skoolbag and Facebook.
