Probably the most singificant result last week was the 6 point loss by Old Paradians against Old Scotch .lot that their postions on the ladder change, O.P.'s remain in third spot and Scotch 5th but I think it effectively

ruins Parade's chance of getting the double chance..And now Scotch have a very real chance of making the° nal four, perhaps today if they can beat Da La Salle.

Neither side played like a premiership threat . Parade's pace worried the Cardinals early in the game but,t was the Scotch key position players who won them the match . Key position players Peter Sherwen (FB),Dean Bevford ( CHB), Brian Hodge (C), Duncan NcCall (CHF) and John Moir (ruck) all figured prominently.

However, dont write Parade off. This loss will give Gerard Shelly the needle he needs .Old Xaverians wrapped up their game against Caulfield Grammarians with 6 goals into the breeze in the

rst quarter and nearly an 11 goal lead at half time . But then the wheels fell off! Caulfiedl kicked 6 and keptme Xavs scoreless in the third term . We all trooped out to hear Danny Corcoran give it to the Xavs . But toour collective surprise there was no yelling . Just cool, calm and collected . He reminded them of the game againstTherry last year - 54 points up and lost the game. Would this be the same . You were physically intimidated

Caulfield . I have failed". And on he went . Quite a surprise but well worth listening to . Caulfied carried onthe last quarter with Ray Berzins, Mark McClelland and Campbell Cooney on top in defence and Ian Kyte,

John Kanis and others trying to run the ball up to David Matthews (on one leg) in the goal square. The stum-bling blocks were Nick Wilton and Mark Summers - they were superb and the Xavs held on to win by 22points. I don't think Danny has failed . They haven't been beaten in 10 weeks or so and with the return of Ralph0'Shaughnessy, Steve Curatin, Nick Burne and Phil Callil they'll be a great chance for the riag . Nonningwould surprise me come September. Remember 1981 ?

Ormond beat Collegians by 45 points in a lacklustre game . Collegians got the first 2 goals with the breezebut did not score another till the 3rd term . The game featured the leading two goalkickers but both were wellheld - Ormond's Paul Schuhkraft by Simon Williams and Collegian's Richard Herman by Brad Nash .

I'm looking forward to the big clash between Ormond and Old Xaverians this afternoon .

Uni Blues blew their chance of a win over De La Salle with a bad first quarter and they lost by 21 points .De la's on-ball players Mick Greene (ruck), Mark Lowe (rover) and Gary Connolly (ruck-rover) were the difference.

North Old Boys scrambled in against Bulleen-Templestowe by 13 points . The Bullants were in touch all day, just a point down at each change. They hit the front in the last quarter but the report and send off of CHB GregKazuoo made the vital difference and North's Paul Considine ran amok and kicked two goals . Bullant AndySmythe played his 250th and was their best player.

This is a verv difficult week to select winners, even more so than usual but a areat series of matches is assured .A SECTION B SECTIONOld Xaverians v ORMONDCollegians v UNI BLUESDe La Salle v OLD SCOTCHOLD PARADIANS v North O .B .CAULFIELD GRAM . v Bulleen-Templestowe

ianks to Ross Booth for filling in last week . I'm sure he finds the reviews a far more attractive propositiong his indifferent performance, although his Old Scotch selection was certainly inspired! His referenceWhisper" was timely as his demise mid 1986 meant I was forced to take over the pen for this column .

were rumours aplenty doing the rounds at the time I recall, as to his identity which like "China and Snow "~s}nryear are still unfounded . Well the real news on the '`Whisper" front is that he may be back for the finals,. ng a post card received at Elsternwick Park during the week which was postmarked Cooper Pedy! I remem-he was forced out of town in a hurry, something to do with possible civil action but apparently its been resolved

rd he could well return around finals time . How's that Fergus and R oss?

To more serious matters - today's games and we have two beauties in A Section that will certainly attracte crowds .

Ormond have been waiting eight weeks for a return bout with Old Xavei s the only side to have beatenall conquering ' Monds to date. Readers may recall that Xavs blitzed in the final quarter and wentwin 15.14 to 13 .12 . As Old Paradians have shown some vulnerabilit} ._ . . ;!y the fight for second spot isand so today's clash is a dress rehearsal of the second semi . Dranor - does not have the injury worries

::avs do although S t eve Curtain and "Ralph" O 'Shaughnassy may return today. Whets wrong with Pau lCurtain and Doug At kinson? Certainly Nick Burne is still a week or two away or is he? I wonder whetherXavs are planning to repeat their 1981 move of playing Nick Burns in a forward pocket and using Steve f'=!r_tain at centre half forward, a position they have been unable to adequately fill all season .

The big plus for the side is the return of N ick W ilton and his unique ability to find form almost immedi, =iy.N- presence does wonders for the Xav defence and Xavs would also be looking for a quick return fromAtt ;inson whose cool head and determined approach are of immeasurable value .

final word on Xavs concerning team placement . Why was M ike At] ' > placed in a back pocket last week?aems a little late in the season to be experimenting Danny , especially with a player who has proven his

Drth in the pivot all year. Another observation - where does Pete . fit into the side so as to give bestiue. I've seen him full back, full forward, centre half forward, centre half back, ruck rover, half back and centre ,

whivh tells us all that he's as versatile and brilliant as any player in the Association . However I'm inclined toth view that his best football is more often produced as a half back flanker. But then where do you play Varcoe

John Curtain? Ah the problems of being successful .

After all that I'm selecting Ormond to win . Xavs have not been beaten since May 2nd whPn they -,nt downto the Lions by 7 points and whilst they've had great wins over Old Scotch and in that longsequence they've not impressed as Ormond has . They're not as disciplined, and only pI2- - '- bursts . Consisten-cy has been the key to Ormond's top of the ladder position plus the performance of the ,"unknowns"- Paul N ankervis whose clash with Antony Callan will as they say in the classics "be worth going a lon g

.y to see". Two young quick, skilful[ players with a great future in the game pitted in the match of the day itsmouthwatering . Some other ' ., i' quiet achievers - rover Paul Cox, centreman ruck-man Paul McDonald, forward . - 'aukraft, defender defender Scott Taylor, full bact all homegrown products brought up in the Ormond way and not a reinstatement among them. to win andshorten as flag favourite.

Old Scotch's moment of truth arrives today. Victory over De La Salle will put the Cardinals in the top fourfor the first time since June 13th and with the slighly better draw they could hang on and make their first final'sappearance since the B Section Grand Final of 1982 . The odds favour De La who have won 24 of the 33 gamesplayed, although Old Scotch's win at Waverley Oval in July last year (8.11 to 7.10) was their first at that venueand may stand the Cardinals in good stead for today's all important game .

Scotch are obviously a harder side now than when they lost to On . at Elsternwick Park in Round 11 .Since then they've beaten Blues by 10 points, come from behind to beat i by 3 points and then last weekagain got up off the floor to snatch a 6 point victory over Old --i radi A reason for these close victoriesis certainly the Don Davenport approach and the good form of its defence led b yPeter Sherwen and A ndrew Mac Millan, centreman Brian :o ruckmen D inc ; . andon ball players Steve Reddish, R ic Senior and Dean L urfo , and forward ~

THE AMATEUR FOOTBA LLER 1987 3

  • As finals appearances have been few and far between for this current Scotch side they'll be really fired u,for the game . However before Scotch start counting their chickens they would do well to remember the c< I), :.of player who represents De La . They've proved time and again that they're never better than when writtenoff and the return of skipper Mick Greene and recent good form of Garry Connolly, Mark Lowe, Peter ':'tal-dron, Pat Maher and Dick Willimas who are all steeped in the De La tradition poses problems for the Cardinal v

Despite their recent victories I'm going for the home side to win a cliff hanger and put paid to the Scotchcharge for 1987 .

In other A Section games Uni Blues have enough at stake to defeat a most disappointing Collegians a Edoes Caulfield against Bulleen-Templestowe . In fact the'Fields' second half last Saturday was quite impres-sive and I wonder if their last two performances can be attributed to my comments on July 18th ?

The remaining game is vital for North who meet Old Paradians at Bundoora . O .P.'s will be still smarting afterlast week's 6 point loss . No rt h has had chances to take over fourth spot and knowing it has De La next weerwill have planned well for today. However at Bundoora and despite the good form of Garry Carroll, Mick Fad .ley, Paul Millett, Ben Curulli and Tony Cahill to mention but five I'm afraid today will see the end of Nc : ;iyshopes for a hattrick of finals appearances .

In B Section Marcellin are at home to Therry in the match of the section . Therry won well in the first encourter (20 .8 to 13 .13) and with second spot at stake for both clubs there is certainly plenty for which to play. ME : cel .!in at home are hard to beat and as both clubs play a similar style and have coaches who are keen student--of the game the anticipated big crowd are in for great game . Marcellin are holding a reunion lunch to celebrate20 years as a football club and president Gavin White is confident the old faces will inspire the side and urgethem to victory. Marcellin must concentrate for the whole game and not have a quarter off if it is to win andwith tough games against Parkside and St . Bernards still to come knows full well that Uni Blacks are still capa-ble of a final challenge. For Blacks to make it they must win the remaining four games, the hardest of whichis against St . Bernards today. I don't believe the students are capable of beating St. Bernards who have hada fine year after a slow start . They have made it to first place without the hoohah-and fanfare associated withother clubs and have the right mixture of youth and experience and a most astute coach in Frank M e!? :anwho is sure to have his side in the right frame of mind for today's game.

Parkside will be keen to avenge their shock Round 7 loss against Old Trinity who appear to be going throughthe motlons . Parkside is bound to go for percentage and will appreciate the run on the big Old Trinity groundwith the finals so close.

St . Kilda CBC has the form and spirit to beat Fawkner at Fawkner and will be hoping Ivanhoe accountfor Banyule as it fights to avoid relegation . Ivanhoe are more stable than Banyule who have not fared quiteas well as anticipated and would need to pull out a big one to knock off the 'Hoe this afternoon . As Ivanhoeare not known for their on field generosity I'm afraid Banyule are in for a bleak day.

To C Section where Hampton Rovers are supremely confident of downing the High School following thatsplendid win over Balaclava whose finals hopes have nose dived in recent weeks . However such is AmateurFootball, I've no hesitation in selecting Balaclava to beat Monash at Albert Park. The 'Ashes are in a real slumphaving loss successive matches and as Balaclava "has the wood" on the students I'm afraid July will provea very sad month for Keith Freason and compan y

Kew are at home to AJAX and could start at half time and still win whilst Thomastown have far too muchat stake to drop a game against Old Haileybury who will be heartened by last weeks effort. Going on last yearfrom memory Old Haileybury struggled to field two sides although despite the trek awaiting the Springvaleboys I'm sure they've learnt the lesson of playing "ring ins "

Elsternwick Park is the venue for the battle between close rivals Old Brighton and Old M elburnians . Twoor three weeks ago I would have given Brighton a big show but O.M .'s have regrouped since then and thereturn of many of its injured stars has the side in the right frame of mind for the big months ahead . Despitethe distraction of a supporters lunch O .M .'s will appreciate the chance to show their true ability and should winan entertaining game .

All at Old Camberwell congratulate Matthew Toddon finally reaching 100 games . Toddy who currentlycoaches the seconds typifies the spirit of Old Cam-berwell . Everyone appreciates Toody's commitment,

entnusiasm and love for the Club . As a player Toddyis an aggressive bell of energy who will always pro-tect the younger players, and recently has delightedhis band of spectators with some great sausage rolls .Everyone at Old Camberwell truly thanks the man :Matthew Todd .

REVIEW OF GAMES PLAYED JULY 27, 1987D SECTIOP! ( Round 15 )North Brunswick's greater accuracy enabled them to defeat Old M entonian's by two points. This victory me-rs that North are now safe from relegation which must be a big relief to their members . There was no need

Old Camberwell supporters to worry last week as their players carried the team to a forty nine point victoryor Coburg . Old Ivanhoe's comfortable thirty eight point victory over Preston has stopped virtually all hope

,e Preston people had of reaching the finals . St . Kevins returned to the winning list when they defeated El-sternwick by thirty six points . Bulleen United experienced few difficulties in defeating Heatherton by fo rty~ne points.

E SECTIOP! ( Round 15 )Tia sectional results did little to sort out the scramble for positions with which all ten clubs are vitally involved .

t a result between Brunswick and Old Essendon! Who would have forseen a tie! The result has kept the,.iubs in the top tow places. As expected State Bank had a big credit score of ninety seven points against win-_ ~ ; Clayton . Old Geelong won their long awaited sixth game when they defeated Powerhouse by thirty oneacmts . The surprise result of the round was University High School Old Boys ten points win over St Bedes.1 h :s loss by St . Bedes coupled with West Brunswick's sixty one point victory over Peninsula Old Boys sawWest move into fourth place .

F SECTION ( Round 15)Williamstown was untroubled to defeat La Trobe University by forty three points. I must apologize to my avidLa Trobe readers because what else can I write about your side! Whitefriars had an overwhelming victoryover Commonwealth Bank by one hundred and thirty five points. A .N .Z . Bank gave a commendable displayagainst Doveton before going down by thirty four points . For the first time in the V.A.F.A . St Leonards wonsonsecutive games when they finished seventy five points in front of Footscray Institute . The win lifted St .Leonards two places on the ladder from twelfth to tenth . The match of the day at Elsternwick Park turnedmto a nightmare for Old Carey who were overwhelmed by St . Andrews by one hundred and eighteen points.in the Sunday game leaders Aquinas received little opposition from University Reds before Aquinas wonby one hundred and six points,G SECTION (Round 15 )Monash W hites were too strong for De La Salle and won by twenty three points . St . Bernards and Collegians.vere not evenly matched in Round 15 because St. Bernards were able to win by sixty two points . Inaccuracypy Old Scotch saw the Cardinals go down by twenty two points to Port Colts . Old Haileybury recorded acomfortable thirty point victory over G .T.V.9 while Kew were able to defeat Marcellin by fifteen points. LeadersBloods experienced little difficulty defeating Old M elburnians by ninety five points . As these six results wreas I predicted I tipped the G Section card .H SECTION ( Round 15)Bulleen Templestowe had a day out against Old Geelong and as a result had a huge winning margin - onehundred and ninety seven points. Leaders E!tham had little trouble defeating Therry by seventy seven pointsin what was Therry's last appearance for the season . St . Kevin's did return to the winning list in a resoundingfashion when they defeated Richmond Central by forty six points . Old Brighton received little opposition fromC.B.C. St . Old Xaverians forfeited to State Bank.Pot: verhouselBalac!ava had the bye.UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (Round 14)Collegians with a clear cut victory over De La Salle by twenty eight points have vitually ended all chancesthat De La might sneak a final's berth . H SECTION ( Round 16 )_ : :,nd placed Old Brighton should prove strong enough to defeat State Bank . Old Xaverians should end

,r season a a high note by taking the points against Powerhouse/Balaclava . This H section combined sid est be commended for always meeting it's commitment despite the regular heavy defeats they have had on

., field . Bulleen Templestowe and Eltham will give each other a solid final preparation today. There is statisti-11 speaking, little between the sides . The Combine has taken longer to hit top form and if last week's results

any indication the side is cherry ripe for final's pickings . Today I select Bulleen Templestowe to defeatEltham . St. Kevin's whose recent form has little to recommend it . Richmond Central has the chance to end

successful debut season with victory over Old Geelong who have not shown much form in recent matches.Therry have the bye.

this is my final full sectional report for G and H Sections I hope their players and supporters have enjoyed,.ir season as full members of the V.A .F.A . and that each of these teams will be in action again in 1988 .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (Round 15)Old Xaverians who go from victory to victory should have a clear win over De La Salle. the spur of being cham-, ; r s gives extra rian incentive. Collegians, who are judged by some to be a good side, could give UniversityBlues a solid game at Oval II . I cannot select against the Blues whose record is by far the more impressive .

tal game at Ormond sees M elbourne High School Old Boys and the home side view for the right to re-in the section next season . I select Melbourne High School providing their players concentrate on their

ia ;'ne and more the ball quickly to give their forwards the chance to compete one out aginst their opponents .old paradians Green have the chance to polish their team play when North Old Boys visit Bundoora today.Tre Paradians should have a big victory. Near neighbours Marcellin and Bulleen Templestowe meet at M ar-cellin. It is now virtually impossible for the Bullants to make the finals but they can prevent Marcellin holding~-e double chance by winning today . Conversely Marcellin are aware of the rewards of victory and in front of;i e`r club stalwarts the Eagles should triumph .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 (Round 15)j,% ,D of the disappointing sides of the season Old Brighton and Old Melburnians meet on the Brighton BeachOval . Local knowledge (home ground advantage) should enable Old Brighton to win the game . UniversityBlacks and St . Bernards both can be finalists providing they win today. The Blacks have hit top form in recent:%eeks and today I believe they will win again to thwart St Bernard's hopes and kindle their own . Banyule andOld Scotch play in what is virtually a final's preview. At Banyule I favour the home side to win the game be-cause a loss could see them fall from the four. Leaders Therry play Thomastow n whom they comfortably defeatedon May 23 . Since then Thomastown has shown great improvement and has become a definite final's threat .ioday at home I favour Therry to win again . Old Haileybury who could snatch second place after Round 18sFould be able to overcome all C.B.C . St . Kilda opposition and win the game.

UNDER 19 SECTION (Round 15 )Old Paradian's Purple and W illiamstown should play an interesting game at Bundoora . The Paradian's haveshown my many glimpses of form but they have not been able to give a sustained exhibition . Williamstown's--cord is somewhat similar. Today I select the Old Paradians due largely to home ground advantage. Whitefri-ars will be anxious to return to the winning list and M onash Blues could well be the unfortunate side . Becausec,f their superior record I select Whitefriars . Caulfield Grammarians journey to Hampton Rovers where theycan confidently be expected to win the game. I select Caulfield to record another big win . Ivanhoe have the bye.

MILESTONE AT COLLEGI A NSThe Collegians Football Club wishes to congratu-

ate Tony Baum on his 150th game with the Club.Baumy joined the Club in 1978 straight out of

,hool . He became a permanent senior player dur-'~g that season, playing in his customary half forward''ank position . Although tried in the centre and as arcver, Baumy found these positions required too muchrunning, and also how can you kick goals from thebackline?

He is renowned for his sliding marks and his abili-ty to back away from packs (near goals of course)rather than running into them . Over his football career,Tony has not handballed effectively with his left handonce, and it is rumoured tht the Club's early seasoninjury worries were a direct result of Baumy's "hospitalhandballs".His four career highlights would be :-1 . Best and Fairest Winner - 1984 .2 . A Grade Premiership - 1986.3 . His marriage to Carolyn - 1987 .4. Trying to explain to Carolyn why the round wed-ding ring she gave him came home flattened aftertraining one night!

    6AARCELLIPd MILESTONE S

Marcellin Old Collegians has had a few quiet~rs in the last year. So quiet in fact, that theyailed to make the illustrious pages of Th e

-ur Footballer. We think it about time that their`)e announced . Toward the end of 1986 andseason '87, several players have reached per-

r=stones at the club. Four of the youngsters

il e d up their 50th games in the second half ofeason . Anthony Caffrey was the first. A mem-f the victorious 1985 premiership side, Caff wasf the many products from the school who ha s

e on to become a regular senior player. One of_ cohorts, Chris Carr, also played his 50th . Anothe r

;-nool boy superstar, Chris has fitted into Neil LeLievre's coaching style with consummate ease. Th e

rci of the quartet, M ick Day, has been starring thisson playing in defence and attack and has proved

more than versatile footballer. The final member of-e `larcellin Musketeers is Chris Slatery . Slatts wa s

-,iewhat of a nomad pre-season, giving a fewaaue clubs the opportunity to acquire his talents,

iie decided to come home and has lived up topatential by being selected in the Victorian side .

'our played in the supreme 1984 Under 19 side;;n ch won every competition entered . RohanSteward, who tragically broke his leg earlier this year;:i llst having his finest season at the club, also maderi s half century in 1986. Greg Hughes, who workedas hard as anyone at the club in the last couple of_ e::sons, was another player to play his 50th last year.Hi_,ghsey's hard work is paying off as he is now a keys~ay in the reserve side. Several players reached

.- r 100 game milestone last year. Every player is a

nall part of the lifeblood of their club, but some play-9(s are the heart . Tony "flAoosha" Amad . 1985 bestand fairest runner-up is one of the players at Marcel-1,n responsible for so much of the on-field successn previous years, and he played his 100th last year.

His barnstorming barges have become second na-~ . .re at the club and Moosha is one of the most seniorand respected people around the place. Well done':'oosha. M atty Getson, whose season has been in-terrupted (can you believe it) by marriage, alsoreached his 100th game last year. Serious questionsabout Matthew's priorities have been raised, but weknow he'll be back keener than ever . Damien M en-zies, sidelined at the moment with a delicate com-plaint, also made the ton last year. Well done Stub-bles . One of the doctors around the place, who isaround no more, Dave O'Callaghan, also played his100th, as did gritty Gav O'Connell, who still has aheadache from the St . Kilda game. Gerry Price, whodare I say it, keeps getting bigger. Our own Opal Man,Steve Psoras, who was also a member of the trium-phant'85 premiership side and Howard Toomey, amember of the famous Toomey clan . Last year alsosaw one of the popular men around the place play

    THE t.7AATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

his 150th . Bernie Cri mmins, another emminent med-ical man, reached the special milestone and did it witha touch of class . This year is something new for Ber-nie . Despite the fact that he loves kicking goals, heis playing the best football of his very long careerin the back pocket - one of the brainchilds of rookiecoach, Mick Dillon . Well done, Bunnha. Several play-ers have passed the 50 game mark this year. Anotherof the prime movers around the place, Morris EI-Fahkri, reached the mark earlier this year. Dave"Bomber" Howe, whose always getting himself in-jured (?), deservedly got to the first of what we hopewill be many more milestones this year. Noel Peters, who has been remarkable with his beloved thirds, alsomade his 50th appearance, as did spearhead Gary

Petroifi, another of the '85 premiership players, thebearded John Scott and Richard Van Der RAerwe, two of the big men in the twos at present . Four play-ers have reached their centuries this year. MarkCooper, another of the '85 premiership players, isanother Maroon and Blue diehard who came straight

from school and never had a second though aboutplaying for the Old Boys . Good on you Sharkey.

Another doctor, Dirk Ebert, who is just about the mostskilled player at the club, and was another '85 mem-

ber, also played his 100th . Someone remarked to Dirkcongratulations on his "200th", that is more an indi-

cation of his timeless committment, not his apparentage. Luke "Billy" Getson, who has had a hard timekeeping quiet at 21st birthday speeches played his100th against Fawkner. Just so people would remem-

ber the game, Billy tried to take the greatest mark everseen on a football field . He jumped as high as any-

one, unfortunately the mark eluded him . Better luck

with the 200th . The fourth player to reach his centu-

ry this year was Tubby Kennedy. His real name isAdrian, but nobody knows that so we should stick toTubby. A player of tremendous skills, Tubby alwaysseems to have time on his side as he graces the wingsof Marcellin No. 1 and other grounds . A graceful foot-

baller at the worst of times, we congratulate you Adrian(who?) . Two of the doyens of the Marcellin Old Col-legians have played their 150ths this year. The first

is the captain and the player who led the club to itsmost recent Grand Final success, Andrew Cullinan .Andy began his career on a half forward flank, buthas slotted into full back in the last couple of yearsand has played the position beautifully, despite hislack of height . Congratulations Cull . The last playerto reach a milestone, but in no way the least (I haveto say that, he's my coach) is Mick Dillon, Dilly iscoaching the seconds toward a finals berth in onlyhis first season of coaching, and has the players team-ing together really well . He has been a tower ofstrength around the Football and Cricket clubs, andhas reached a most deserved landmark . Well doneDilly, and congratulations to each Marcellin quietachiever.

OTF' congratulates St. Andrews Ter ry Wilson whose 10 goals against Old Carey last Saturday took him pastthe century - the first player in the Association to achieve that unique distinction this season .

OTF' notices two famous names cropping up with some regularity in the best players of their respective clubs,Owen Abrahams (Old Paradians) is the son of former Fitzroy champion of the same name and Antony Callan(Old Xaverians) is the son of former Geelong champ Terry Callan .

OTF' pays tribute to St . Leonards persistence following its second win for the season against Old Carey .

Another result of note was Old Camberwell's reserves two point win over previously unbeaten Preston M .B .O .B .leaving Old Xaverians under 19s as the only unbeaten side in the competition although Marcellin U1 9s wouldknow that they beat the Xavs . on the scoreboard but suffered the tragedy of playing an unregistered player!

Players like Hampton Rover's DavidRogerson seen here in the new Woolblendmarkjumper for season 1987, and Ormond's PhillipKingston wearing the Woolblendmark jumperworn in the 1986 State Games, enjoy thefeeling of wool eve ry week because the VAFAis one of a growing number of associationswho have made the change toWoolblendmark jumpers .

FA M OUS NAME CONTINUES Ohl . . .Mark Serong, a goal umpire with the VAFA, is the second of ten children and is currently doing a MathslCom-.rter Course at R .M .I .T .

Mark, who is 19 years old has always taken a keen interest in football, his father, Bill played 98 games with;;oill1c, :vood between 1956 and 61, and one season with North Melbourne in 1962 . In 1959, Bill polled very

in the Brownlow Medal count, finishing equal third .Mark, played junior football with Ivanhoe in the Doncaster Distrcit and school football with Marcellin . It wasMarcellin that Mark first umpired, due to a shoulder injury he took up the flags for the first eleven on Friday

_,lternoons and enjoyed it so much he thought about doing it more often . Mark's involvement with the VAFAcame about through Marcus Redi (brother of Brandon) and former field umpire John Smith (who now runsno boundary for Marcellin) .

f .lark started in 1984 with the VAFA and hal way through that season umpired his first 'A' Section match,ch me remembers as being a great thrill .

According to Mark, the 'goalies' are a great bunch of blokes, always full of encouragement (and jokes) andin his 4th season he is enjoying it more than ever .

Mark's highlights to date are : His first 'A' Section Match (1984 )U i9 Grand Final (1985) U19 VAFA v VFA (1986) and the 'A' Reserves Grand Final (1986) . Here are someof Mark's interests :Favourite Food : Fried Calamari .Favourite Drink : Beer or milk (depending on how much beer he has had) .Fvourite Sportsman : Hulk Hogan .Favourite T .V . Show: Neighbours.Hobbies : Golf, Tennis, and Indoor Cricket .Biggest Influence: His girlfriend .Biggest Thrill : First 'A' Grade Match .Biggest Disappointment : Being dropped from 'A' Section .Ambition : To umpire as many 'A' Grade Grand Finals as possible . (Maybe a quiet chat to Don Hillier would help) .

On behalf of the Umpiring fraternity, I would like to congratulate St . Bernards Football Club on their 25thAnniversary in the V.A .F .A . This great club celebrated the event on Thursday night 23rd of July at MooneeValley Racecourse, and what a night it was .

Approximately 450 guests attended and almost immediately the reminiscing began, some of the stories toldwere a real delight to listen to .

To see past players and officials mixing with the players and officials of today and talking of more premier-ship aspirations was certainly interesting .

The highlight of the evening was the rundown of the clubs history in the VAA by M ichael Perrett , it wasthe most comprehensive and well spoken talk that I have ever had the pleasure to listen to .

Michael, included not only past and present players, but included some of the best umpires to be associatedwith the VFA in his speech .

The night was a wonderful success and the people who organised the Ball deserve more than applause .Well done, St. Bernards and may you continue to be a big part of VAFA history .I believe a very late, but enjoyable evening was had by a "few" umpires a couple of weeks ago at Teresa

Bolger's place. Kevin Segota (chilli pepper), peter Harris (the late night king) and John Hall (horse expert)to mention a few, surely would have had some explaining to do, once they arrived home . I'm sure Peter Harriswould have given them all some "homely" advice on keeping in the good books .

I would like to thank the two lovely canteen ladies from ANZ Bank for proving a nice hot cuppa last Saturday,as well as showing support for umpires, it certainly was pleasing to hear good and positive comments comingfrom them .
