Last year’s events included a walking parade, a river parade, bell boat racing, the Tewkesbury Bake Off, fairground entertain- ment and music and stalls around the streets. The organisers were able to raise a fantastic amount to donate to good causes, with cheques of £810 each going to Macmillan Cancer Research, The Town Mayor’s Charities and the Avon Navigation Trust. This year's event is being held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May, and plans are afoot to make the weekend bigger than ever. Saturday will see a walking parade through the town centre with a theme of musicals, and fancy dress. Sunday features bell boat racing and a river parade themed on Henley Regatta. New for this year is a dog show on the Vineyards. There are also events at the Watson Hall, and in the Town Hall gardens there will be activities for children. The river will be cen- tral to the festival, with duck racing, demonstra- tions by emergency services, boat trips and boats for hire. A riverside street market and entertainers around the town will add to the atmosphere too. Last year’s event brought extra footfall into Tewkesbury, bene- fitting local business. Entries are now open for the bell boat races, and teams of eight are invited to take part. Red kites backover Bredon Hill

" Red kite pictured flyingover Conderton Fort onBredon Hill

Red kites, once one ofBritain’s rarest birds, may be breeding againin this area.

Kites were at theirmost vulnerable in the1900s, when only 12birds survived in theWelsh mountains.

Thanks to the BreconBeacons National Parkand the establishmentof the Welsh Kite Trust,a conservation pro-gramme ensured thebirds protection - andslowly they began tothrive again.

These majestic birdsof prey have sincespread eastwards, and asubstantial number ofkites have made theirhome in the Chilterns.

Red kites were firstnoted on the Glouces-tershire/Worcestershireborders about five yearsago, and for the pastthree summers one ortwo birds have beenseen soaring above bothBredon and DumbletonHills.

This year a pair haveover-wintered and havebeen spotted regularlyby keen observers. Thelarge birds are identifi-able by their uniqueforked tail and gracefulflight with wings bowedslightly forward.

We continue our walk from the Black Bear on thewest side of the High Street and we encounterHomeabbey House Retirement Complex, writesJohn Dixon. One is not sure of thevalue of the house onthe frontage but thecherished part is spiedthrough the archway, where lie the retirementapartments with theirenviable views over theHam - and some spacefor car parking.

This space has beencreated from astute join-ing of the former amplegardens which onceenriched their neigh-bour’s properties.

The history of thissomewhat bland devel-opment has been stimu-lated by photographsprovided by Jean andDavid Green.

Until 1958, it was asedate residence ofSurveyors, including the“portly figure” ofW H Gray whoabsconded toSouth Africa in1898 with £3k ofpublic money –which leacheddown to his sonBertie, who hadowned Northend

House (next door buttwo which had partlyburned down in 1946).

There is no sign of analley in 1958, althoughone has been included inthe 1985 development. It was soon after con-verted into a double-fronted shop; the invalu-able wide entrance to theleft has been main-tained.

The last tenant whenit was demolished was“Jay’s” – according tothe window scrawl; whatwas sold there? We canbe sure that the presentresidents are as sedate –but much more honest!- as the surveyors whopreceded them." (Below) Homeabbey House in 1915 (J.Dixon)

Thanks to modern medi-cine, a high percentageof those diagnosed dobeat the disease.

But what of the impli-cations to individualsfollowing treatment, which could involve thecomplete or partialremoval of one or bothbreasts? Mastectomy isa word every womandreads hearing, but sup-port groups such asMaggie’s do a tremen-dous jobs through pro-viding advice to cancerpatients.

It is a good idea tobuy a suitable bra forimmediate use followingsurgery. One suggestionis a front fastening bra, such as those made byRoyce. These are cottonwith a little stretch onthe back and popper fas-tenings; easy to put on.If you are concernedabout possible infection, then there is a versionwith antibacterial silverthreaded through.

There are some goodbras on the market forladies who opt for recon-

structive surgery follow-ing mastectomy.

Initially a firm, sup-portive bra is required.A good option is a non-wired sports bra whichwill hold the breast firm-ly while they heal.

A predicted cup sizewould be required by thefitter, to help find theright bra for use follow-ing reconstruction.

Later, when a prettierbra is wanted, thosewith stretch in the cupsoften fit better thanthose made with rigidmaterial.

There are some verypretty lacy bras in theshops, but do seekadvice on their fit andsuitability.

As summer approach-es, t-shirt bras aresought after. There arenon-wired smooth cupbras on the market if theadvice is not to wearunderwired styles.

More information willbe supplied next month.

Many people, althoughthey have heard ourname, are unaware ofthe scale of the operationin Beckford and justdon’t realise how manycasualties actually comethrough our doors.

To give everyone aninsight into the numberswe deal with: total num-ber of mammals/birdstreated in 2014 – 4,041(2013 – 3,875, 2012 –4,421). The 2014 figureincludes: 19 spar-rowhawks, 68 blue tits,6 hares, 790 hedgehogs,32 pheasants, 104foxes, 39 swans, 270blackbirds, 54 badgers,71 starlings, 96 collareddoves, 39 roe deer and44 buzzards.

We also take in a fewunusual, non-wildlifepatients, usually on ashort-term basis inemergency situations. In2014, these included 1cat, 2 dogs, a turkey, 3red-foot tortoises, arhea, 5 red-eared terra-pins, a monitor lizard, ablue-tongued skink and5 bearded dragons.

We would prefer notto deal with animalssuch as these as theyuse our much-neededfunds which we rely onfor the care of wildlife, but often there is noalternative because thereis nobody else availableto help.

The most unusual andcertainly the casualty

that has created themost publicity so far thisyear is Minty the wildboar piglet.

Minty was brought induring March, picked upin the Forest of Dean, dehydrated, hypother-mic and emaciated.

She was very close todeath when she was res-cued. We don’t knowwhy or how she came tobe on her own, awayfrom the sow and theother piglets in her litter, but there is a cull of boargoing on in that area sothe chances that hermum had been shot arequite high.

The two things that Iam always trying toimpress on people asbeing THE most impor-tant life-savers for col-lapsed animals, arewarmth and fluids.Minty was given warmfluids by subcutaneousinjection within minutesof arriving at Vale and

following a check over tomake sure she had noinjuries, she was put in aheated brooder, wrappedin a warm blanket.

Within a couple ofhours she was up on herfeet and wanting to getout of the brooder – anamazing difference.

We think that Mintywas about 10 days oldwhen she was rescuedand within a couple of

days she was drinking apig milk replacer out of abowl and running roundher indoor enclosure, inbetween sleeping in adog bed underneath aninfra-red heat light.

Unfortunately she willnot be able to go backinto the wild due to thelegislation surroundingwild boar, but she willhave a safe home for therest of her life eitherwith us or at anothercentre that already havewild boar, so that shehas company to livewith.

Minty has her veryown Facebook page ifanyone is interested inreading more: check out.www.facebook.com/mintythewildboar

Here at Folly Gardens Vets weare officially Cat Friendly. Our clinics are accredited by theInternational Society for FelineMedicine. This means we adhere toa charter to improve cat welfareand that we have taken extra effortto give our staff additional trainingand adapt our practices to reducestress for cats, and their owners. Weeven have a ‘Cat Only’ clinic on aThursday night over at our BartonRoad Branch.

The spring brings kittens! In order to effectively reducethe number of unwanted cats in the UK and protect yourpet from accident and disease, we strongly recommendyou have your cat neutered. Both males (castration) andfemales (spey) can be neutered from around 4 months of age. Un-neutered cats are more at risk of picking updangerous and life threatening infections such as felineleukaemia and feline immuno-deficiency virus.

They are also very good at getting into scraps with other cats, fighting over mates – which can result insome nasty injuries. Sadly, every year we also deal with a great many fatalities, where un-neutered catshave roamed and have been hit by cars. So neuteringreally makes sense.

DiscountedCat Neutering inApril and MayTHROUGHOUT APRIL AND MAYwe are discounting our cat neutering. Females are £40 to bespayed, and males £30 to be castrated. A massive discount! Please call to book your FREE pre-neutering consultation withour vets, so that we can healthcheck your cat or kitten, and bookthem in for their operation. Females only £40Males only £30Please phone to book in your cat today!

The TemporaryGentlemanby Sebastian BarryPB £7.99

Once again SebastianBarry returns torecount a story of theMcNulty family whichhe last visited so successfully in 'TheSecret Scripture' andpreviously in 'TheWhereabouts of Eneas McNulty'.

Here we experiencethe life of Jack McNultyand his love for MaiKirnan. Their lifetogether starts idyllical-ly but the world inter-venes and their livescome unstuck.

This is not a BarryIrish novel, as whilstmany parts are set inthe Emerald Isle, Jackspends many years inAfrica and he recountshis story from hisAfrican home.

Jack is introduced toAfrica during WW11during which he heldthe rank of Major inthe British Army;hence the title

'TemporaryGentleman', but Jackdoes not live the life ofa gent.

He is an engineerand after he and Maireturn from Africawhen their first daugh-ter is due, their livesdisintegrate.

The eventful disinte-gration of a happymarriage and their self-destruction makes forsome sad reading, emboldened thoughwith Barry's strongcharacterisation andbeautiful prose.

This is anotherchapter in the life ofthe McNultys, duringwhich we catch the oddsight of Roseanne from'The Secret Scripture'and other family mem-bers, but this is Jack'sstory, and of his sadlife.

BURIED LOGWEDGE

Stuart has uncoveredthis iron wood splittingwedge, approximately100 to 200 years old itwas used for splittinglogs with a sledge ham-mer. In the two photos,we see the find beforede rusting and after-wards.

Cleaning was done byplacing it in a hot firereaching red heat caus-ing the rust to loosen, when cool, it can be wirebrushed and rust-proofed. It is likely thatthe wedge would workas well as it did manyyears ago.

Woodburning bio-mass boilers are attract-ing government finan-cial support as woodburning is virtually car-bon neutral.

The scheme is calledThe Renewable HeatIncentive and contribu-tions will be paid to bothdomestic and commer-cial users that have thesystem installed. Paidquarterly over sevenyears the subsidy shouldcover most of the instal-lation costs.

A “Green Deal” preassessment is made onthe property to decide onwhat heat output isneeded, taking insula-tion and cavity wallinsulation into account.

The boilers are auto-matically or hand fedwith wood pellets andthere are log burningoptions too.

The efficiency of thestoves is incredible leav-ing virtually no residue(see our photo) and canbe in clean line moderndesigns with viewingwindows for effect.

Pellets are cheap andwidely available and aton should cost around£250 meaning they areexcellent value formoney.

Ben is qualified todesign, install and main-tain these systems andhas full OFTEC, HETAS,Gas Safe and MCS cre-dentials to ensure it is alldone to the highest stan-dards.

For those who maywish to have an installa-tion, Ben tells us thatthere are financing com-panies available whospecifically finance proj-ects like these.

Lyn Gardiner of DFLegal said: “In recentyears Gloucestershireand the surroundingregions have gained inpopularity as a greatplace to live and thislooks set to continue.”

“Programmes likeLocation LocationLocation have shownmany a family trying toget away from the ratrace for a slice of countrylife, which has seenmany people with nogeographical links to theregion move in,” sheadded.

Her comments comeat a time of the yearwhen the housing mar-ket traditionally hots up.

She said many of theinflux into the regionwere people who findthey aren’t getting muchfor their money in thesouth and are lured bythe comparative afford-ability of the region.

“To put this in per-spective the most recentsurvey from the Halifaxshowed house priceaverages across the

country being in theregion of £193,000, andwhilst it is hard to findexact figures for thisregion, from data we cangather, we are abovethat figure, but not by agreat deal,” she said.

She added that indi-cations from varioussurveys showed 2015would remain a yearwhere house prices stayin line with inflation.

“This means manymoves during the year tobe based more onlifestyle needs ratherthan anything else,”added Ms Gardiner.

She warned that a

property purchase is ahighly stressful matterand those involved needto make sure they do notcut corners.

“Buying property isgenerally the mostexpensive acquisition aperson will ever make,so risking cheap con-veyancing, which isdealt with in a call centreenvironment, manymiles away could provecostly if it goes wrong,”she said.

“Quality conveyanc-ing is relatively cheap inthe overall picture ofbuying property and cangive you assurances that

everything has beendone correctly. It givesthat peace of mind thatis needed at a verystressful time.”

For as long as I canremember I have lovedstained glass windows.I first sang in a Churchchoir when I was 8years of age in Uptonon Severn. Later I wasa member of theCathedral Choir ofWells in Somerset andlater still Choirmasterof the Parish Churchchoir of Wedmore, alsoin Somerset.

Now I frequently popinto our glorious Abbeyhere in Tewkesbury. Inall four places I can

enjoy the beautifulstained glass, wonderfulto look at when the sunhits them and their bril-liance shone through.

I used to visit a friendin the south ofGloucestershire who wasa spiritual healer. In hisconsulting room he hadtwo panels of stainedglass set into one of hiswindows. One panel wasof a dove with an olivesprig in its beak and theother which alwaysdelighted me was a rain-bow.

The rainbow alwaystook my breath awaywhen the sun shonethrough and the stainedglass was able to give itsbest impact-makingshow. The sun shonethrough and the imagewas cast onto the wall ofthe room. I don't have astained glass windowbut in my lounge andstudy I have cut crystalpendants hanging in thewindows and when thesun shines I have minirainbows being cast onthe ceilings and thewalls of my rooms.

I can remember myfriend saying " I love therainbow as it remindsme always that to makerainbows you need sunand rain".

For me the rainbow isa great motivator. Itgives me motivationwhen life presents chal-lenges. It reminds methat we need to have

some bad times to beable to truly appreciatethe good times. To reallyappreciate the light weneed to have spent sometime in the dark.

On days when life isgood the beauty of therainbow never fails tomake me think " Well, things don't get muchbetter than this !" In lifewe sometimes needsmall reminders to stayfocused on what is reallyimportant in life ; toremember the thingsthat we can, if we are notvery careful, so oftentake for granted.

On the difficult daywhen the sun does notshine through, the crys-tals do not break up thelight into rainbow pat-terns on the wall BUTthere is the knowledgethat, behind the clouds, the sun still shines and itis only a matter of timebefore it breaks through

and the rainbow canonce gain be seen in allits glory. Even at themost difficult times ofour lives the rainbow isthere and will come outto shine.

If its raining in yourlife or heart at themoment don't give uphope. The sun WILLshine. The good daysWILL come.

Just remember - Tomake rainbows you needsun AND rain. It is thenthat we get the full expe-rience and benefit of thiswonder of nature.

“Rainbows introduceus to reflections

of different beautifulpossibilities

so we never forgetthat pain and grief

are not the finaloptions in life.”

“There are still blueskies and rainbows anddays bathed in sunlight.

There are colourful

shade trees filled withsweet bird songs.

And there are wish-ing stars in the heavensas well as angels inGod's service.

So lift up your eyes. Refuse to be unhap-

py.”Enjoy YOUR rainbow.

Keep it in your mind andlet it lift your spirits as ithas mine over the years

Having remained vir-tually unchanged since itwas built in 1975, TheRoses has been a con-stant and familiar land-mark in the town centrefor 40 years. Oftendescribed as the jewel inTewkesbury’s crown, there is no denying thatover the years thesparkle has dulled everso slightly as the passingyears have left theirmark. Happily though, since the launch of afundraising campaignlast year, The Roses hasnow secured nearly halfa million pounds worth

of funding, and shortlybefore Christmas wasable to appoint architectsPoole Philips of Pershoreto plan and execute theredevelopment.

Trustee of The RosesCllr Adele Carter, pic-tured right with Directorof Marketing &Development BeckieSmith, is optimisticabout the plans:

“It’s tremendouslyencouraging to see suchprogress in such a shortspace of time. It’s veryexciting to see the plansin black and white, andbe able to visualise the

improvements to thebuilding - in just a fewshort months we aregoing to see such a dif-ference.”

The plans are on dis-play in the foyer of TheRoses, and staff are onhand to talk to any cus-tomer who would like toknow more about theforthcoming changes.Significant changes willinclude the installationof a lift, the refurbish-ment of the toilet facili-ties and the replacementof the roof. The Rosesalso plans to expand itscatering facilities to be

able to serve locallysourced light bitesbefore performances, and install a small coffeebar downstairs.

It’s not too late to getinvolved; The Roses stillneeds help if it is to raisethe £800,000 it needs tofinish the project.Anyone wishing to con-tribute to The Roses’40th Birthday Campaigncan either call into thetheatre, or call Director

of Marketing &Development Beckie

Smith on 01684 853070.

THE ROSES THEATRE DEVELOPMENTSNow that the final plans have been submitted for The Roses’ much awaited refurbishment, due to take place this summer, staff at the Sun Street venue arefamiliarising themselves with how the building is going to look, both inside and out, when the work is complete.

This system was intro-duced in 1952, whenpatients them had to payone shilling per prescrip-tion form.

In 1965 the schemewas abolished , but thenreinstated in 1968at two shillings and sixpence per item.

I remember in 1971,the charge rose to 20p,and the level of bad feel-ing from patients as aresult.

What those peoplewould think of todayscharge at £8.05, I canonly imagine!

There no prescriptioncharge in Wales,Scotland and Northern Island and it does not

seem very fair to me thatthere are charges inEngland. We are sup-posed to be part ofa United Kingdom!

So what is my view ? I think the whole sys-

tem needs a majorreview. Why shouldpatients have to pay? Ifthe NHS cannot affordthis cost, then reinstatethe charges elsewhere.

If it is acceptedthat some patients haveto pay, then at the veryleast the rules need amajor overhaul to befair.

I think all patients onlong term condi-tions, whatever the con-dition is, should have

the prescription free. Is if fair to expect

a patient suffering fromcancer, blood pres-sure, heart condition, orasthma to have to pay, when other patients withdiabetes (for example)get all of their medica-tion free?

I would put in thresh-old of six months, so if apatient was on the treat-ment for this time, itwould become freethereafter.

In the past there wasthe concern that freeprescriptions would drive more patients to theirGPs, but now wehave the Minor AilmentScheme in Tewkesbury.

Local patients canhave a range of medica-tion supplied free ofcharge, subject to crite-ria. Please contact me on07837 513492 or comeinto our pharmacy formore information.

VERMIN HUNTERS OFTHE 16th CENTURYLong and freezing winters, bad harvests, risingfood prices and a growing population werebehind the anti-vermin laws brought in byElizabeth I in 1566.

The Vermin Law said that rewards should be paidat fixed rates on a whole range of animals, and thatthe money was to be raised from landowners andfarmers. Many kinds of wild creature now had a priceon their head.

You can meet a Tudor rat catcher and discover theharsh realities of problem pests in 16th centuryBritain at Tewkesbury’s John Moore Museum onSaturday 4th April in Church Street. There are twosessions, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Tickets areavailable at the museum: for more information call01684 297174. Visitors can also explore the 15thcentury Merchant’s House and meet a Tudor house-wife whose home is plagued with pests!

As readers will be aware, some patients have to pay for their prescriptionitems, writes local pharmacist Peter Badham.
