JAY-Z

JAY-Z : BLENDER MAGAZINE Jay-Z is the only image on this cover, and is

made to stand out by using a plain white background.

The simple use of the colours of black and white contrasts greatly with the only other colour on the cover – red.

Shown to be important as the word ‘JAY-Z” is the only other large word apart from the title that is printed in red.

His head is overlapping the title showing importance

Use of the subheading ‘the fly life of an American gangster’ draws attention to the man on the cover and hints to what the article is about. It also ties in with his outfit.

Jay-Z is the only image on this cover, and is seen in a black and white image

The main colour scheme here is black and white which contrasts greatly with the colours seen in the billboard logo.

His head is overlapping the title showing importance

The title links with Jay-Z himself as it contains the name of his record label

JAY-Z : BLENDER MAGAZINE

Jay-Z is again the only image on this cover, and is made to stand out by using a plain white background.

The use of the colours of black and white contrasts with the other colours on the cover – yellow and red.

Serious expression on the face creates eye contact with the reader

The words ‘HIP-HOP’ beside his face show his relevance to the article

His head is overlapping the title showing importance

All other headings are to the left of the image showing more of jay-z himself – again showing his importance.

JAY-Z : ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

SUMMARY

Despite being magazines of different genres, each magazine portrays Jay-Z in a similar way

They all had him and only him as the background

They all had a theme of black and white, and all used the occasional bold colour to brighten up and draw attention to the cover

They all had the head of Jay-Z overlapping the title

He is portrays as an important, authorative figure that is the master of what he does. This is shown my text moving around him, and him being alone on the cover.
