Exploration success occurs when a number of elements combine to form a working petroleum system;• Reservoir presence and quality• Trap presence prior to hydrocarbon charge• Seal presence; in the form of top seal and lateral seal• Charge (source presence and potential migration

pathways) Each element of the petroleum system is rated, and a quick-look summary pie chart is provided for each well. Each interval is assessed regardless of drilled target. The study utilises both well and seismic data and includes detailed geological, petrophysical and geophysical analysis collated in a geodatabase and delivered as a plug-in to TGS Facies Map Browser (FMB) or as a stand-alone product in ArcGIS.

Possible Charges for the well: Fortune BaySummary: Major oil discovery. Two sand intervals of the Tithonian Bodhràn Fm are oil filled, creating a gross column of 145m (35 API) at the well (106m net) with ODT at base of sand (3125m/3226m TVD). The well was drilled on a faulted anticline, with c. 520m of closure. The Fortune Bay Fm provides top seal to both reservoirs, though oil shows are observed in the claystone interval between the lower and upper reservoir, thus suggesting that this seal in isolation may not be an ideal barrier to hydrocarbon migration. The reservoirs are potentially charged by a Tithonian to Kimmeridgian source rock, with the modelled kitchen being situated approximately 25km to the North West of the structure. Shows have also been observed in carbonates of the Upper Cretaceous Dawson Canyon Fm, though there is no structural closure at this level and the presence of carbonates at the base of the Tertiary section means there is unlikely to be a top seal for this level. As a result of the Bay Du Nord C-78 well testing hydrocarbons a sidetrack of the well, Bay Du Nord C-78Z, was drilled to assess the down-dip extent of the hydrocarbon column and attempt to locate an oil-water contact.

DeliverablesThe East Canada PWA has assessed 46 E&A wells that tie to TGS/PGS 2D multiclient seismic data across offshore Newfoundland and Labrador.

For each well the following data is recorded in a series of data tables;

1. General well information• TD• Status of well

2. Reservoir• Lithological, facies and stratigraphic features,• Petrophysical parameters (N:G, porosity, permeability)

3. Trap• Type, closure, faulting• DHI’s

4. Seal• Top seal: thickness, lithology, heterogeneity• Lateral seal: fault seal, presence of thief zones

5. Hydrocarbons• Show and column information from cuttings, DST,

public data.6. Charge

• Lithological and facies features• Source quality at well location; TOC, HI and maturity

data• Source quality in the kitchen• Potential migration pathways

The East Canada PWA also includes a summary taken from available well reports and public data for an additional 51 wells that are not tied to TGS/PGS 2D multiclient seismic data.

Data Viewer & Query ToolThe PWA is delivered as either a standalone ArcGIS Geodatabase or as a plug-in to TGS’ Facies Map Browser (FMB).

Reviewing the PWA in context of a the regional facies maps and seismic data provides an excellent basis on which to develop lead concepts in the region and de-risk prospects through enhanced understanding of the available analogues.

Both versions include a query toolbar allowing for graphical and spatial representation of a number of pre-set queries to help highlight trends or potential common risk factors in a region.
