Members of our lodge and myself recently participated in the East

Central District Flag Day ceremony at the High Ridge Elks. It was

great! For anyone who has not been to the Flag Day ceremony, I

highly recommend it. The ceremony consists of: Flag replacement by

the Military Color Guard, the presentation of each Flag and it's his-

tory, and a Flag retirement ceremony by the Boy Scout's.

Although the ceremony was not at our lodge we stood out. Next

time you see Mark Schmiedeskamp thank him for making our lodge

look great on Flag Day.

Let's Celebrate 4th of July at the Lodge. We will celebrate with

raffles, 50/50 drawing, and food. Proceeds will benefit the Scholar-

ship Fund. Our parking lot also, provides a great view of the City of

Eureka's fireworks display. Bring the family.

Do you know that at military funerals, the 21 - gun salute stands for the

sum of the numbers in the year 1776?

Celebrating Inaugural Red White & Blue 5K Run Success

The Inaugural Red White and Blue 5k was a success and we are already looking forward to making

it bigger and better in 2015. The Elks Scholarship Fund will increase by $2000 due to this event.

Focus Marine will receive a donation of $700.00 and The Wounded Warrior Project will receive

$100.00.

The event was made spectacular with the help of Chief Brown, the Marines, Chief Wiegand and

the men associated with Focus Marine. We had Hummers, fire trucks, police vehicles and tracked

military vehicles giving free rides. My personal favorite however, was the ladder truck with the flag

flying in the wind – it just filled the air with patriotism.

We would like to thank the many local businesses that donated money to sponsor this very wor-

thy event. There were many volunteers involved in this event and their help was greatly appreciat-

ed. There are a few who deserve special recognition.

Jerry and Laura Kirk: For their donation of a wonderful venue and their diligent work toward

getting the logistics of the race in order – without which this race would not have happened.

Kelly Lubker: For hours and hours of work getting sponsors and donations for the event, trophies,

dog tags and signs.

Sheri De Clue: For setting up our Facebook page, online marketing and getting the online technical

support operating successfully.

Pat Grimshaw: For his invaluable knowledge in course layout and overall experience running a 5k

fundraiser.

Darcie Stocker, Lynn Wall, Joanne Jeffries and Eli Miller: For the many efforts in taking care of the

food, print marketing, volunteers, and handling the money.

Thanks everyone! It was fun, and challenging, but still very rewarding!

Honor Flight

I was able to go with my grandfather, Frank

Weber, on April 23rd. Our honor flight

group of veterans included 33 men, two of

whom were World War II veterans.

Although the flight was one of the longest

that the Franklin County Honor Flight has

done, we were able to see more memorials

than normal. We started at the World War

II memorial, and then continued through

The Mall to the Vietnam Memorial, and the

Korean Memorial.

We were then able to see the newer Martin

Luther King Jr and FDR Memorials, from

there we were off to see the Air Force Me-

morial, the Pentagon Memorial, Iwo Jima

Memorial and then onto Arlington National

Cemetery.

Charter Member Celebrates 50 Years of Barbering!

Being there in the beginning of the Elks

club, Vic left the doors of his barbershop

open to allow members of the elks to

plug in to his electric to construct the

original Elks club. While in the construc-

tion phase, Vic was handing out applica-

tions to probably most of the original

charter members.

Yes, the shop is still around right across

the street at 114 N. Central and hopefully

for a long time to come.

Congratulations Vic!

Once there we were able to see the changing

of the guard, which turned out to be the

favorite of most of the veterans with us.

Thank you for the opportunity!

Vic Torrez Sr., Charter member of the Eure-

ka-Pacific Elks, celebrates 50 years of barber-

ing on July 15, 2014.

Vic started his first 8 years in St. Louis City.

After being laid off for a very long 3 days, the

union hall sent Vic a thousand miles away to

the little bitty town of Eureka. He was a little

nervous at first, but the people of Eureka

made him feel very welcome.

The next 42 years of his career began in a

small plaza located at 17 W. 1st Street, right

in the middle of the banquet hall of today’s

Elks club.

“78 years is to young

to retire”

Vic Torrez Sr.
