SMART CAR ROBOTICSThe Car of the Future
Explore the cutting edge of automotive technology with this futuristic car. Construct the sleek, high-tech car, and then use your tablet or smartphone to control the car’s motorized wheels and steer it in any direction. On your device’s screen, watch the car as it drives through a virtual, augmented reality cityscape. Use the free downloadable app to script a simple program that instructs your car to automatically follow a predetermined course through your city. To build your virtual city, spread the AR (augmented reality) code cards out across the floor and point your tablet’s camera at them. The app interprets the AR codes as buildings and houses so that a virtual city springs up on your tablet’s screen. Once you have built your city, you can manually steer your car through it or program a route using a special “draw and drive” function in the app. Through all of your experiments with the car, you will learn first-hand about the forward-looking technologies of driverless vehicles. Automotive engineers expect that by around 2020 it will be completely normal for some cars to drive at least partly on their own. Major car manufacturers and tech companies are already working on their own versions of the self-driving cars. You will learn about the technologies employed in autonomous vehicles, including laser detectors, GPS, radar systems, and on-board computers. Build seven models in addition to the smart car. Each of the models uses up to four electric motors, and each motor can be controlled independently with the app. The app’s programming mode allows you to switch each of your car’s four motors forward, backward, or off, in second-long increments, for up to three minutes. A full-color, 64-page experiment manual provides assembly and usage instructions, and background information.

GYROBOTThe Science of Gyroscopes
Gyroscopes are used in countless devices. From smartphones, tablets, and video game controllers to airplanes and space telescopes, gyroscopes perform tasks ranging from the everyday to the extraordinary. With this kit, children can explore the astonishing powers of the gyroscope by building seven motorized models, including a robot that can balance on two linear wheels and move along a tightrope! Kids will learn about the physical science principles that keep the robot balanced, making it appear to defy gravity. By constructing seven different models with the motorized gyroscope unit, young engineers can experiment with and learn about the science of gyroscopic devices and the indispensable role they play in our lives. The models include the gyroscopic robot, a balancing personal vehicle, a gyro horizon (or artificial horizon), a gyrocompass, a balancing game, a tightrope walker, and a flight simulator. At the core of these models is a unique motor-driven gyroscope. A gyroscope is a rapidly spinning wheel mounted in such as way that its axle can move in any direction. Because of the laws of physics, the gyroscope reacts to external forces differently than a non-spinning wheel would: it resists forces in certain directions. This behavior allows it to be used for all sorts of applications related to balance, rotation, and orientation. Fun, hands-on experiments with the motorized gyroscope unit make these physical laws tangible and easier to comprehend. Although gyroscopes are used in very sophisticated devices, essentially they are simple mechanical instruments. A child’s spinning toy top is a simple example of a gyroscope. A full-color, 24-page, illustrated experiment manual provides step-by-step assembly instructions and scientific explanations. 102 building pieces.

From cell phone buzzers and video game controllers to pavement compactors and industrial movers and sorters, vibrating motors are found in countless devices and machines. They are increasingly used in haptic (or tactile feedback) technologies, which use motion or vibration to communicate information to users through their sense of touch. With this kit, children can build seven different models centered on a vibrating motor that demonstrate real-world uses for these energizing machines. The vibrating motor and specially designed legs and feet allow the models to move around simply with oscillating motion. Build a vibrating robot that shimmies, wiggles, twirls, and dances around. Learn how to control the robot’s direction by changing the geometry of its arms and its weight balance. Construct a Mars rover model that bounces and shakes across the pretend surface of Mars. Make a vibrating bug and watch it hop around the tabletop. Assemble a doodling machine that creates abstract designs on paper with markers or pens. Build models of a vibrating fitness machine and a pavement compactor. Put together a skating machine that whizzes across the floor. The secret behind the models’ vibrating motion is an imbalanced weight that rotates on a driveshaft connected to an electric motor. You can even see the off-center weight spinning through the motor unit’s transparent case. This special motor unit allows you to connect it to all sorts of models and power them up with vibrational energy. Explore the exciting and animated world of vibrating motors and experiment to build your own wacky creations! ECO-BATTERY VEHICLESThe Future of Electric Cars
It’s becoming increasingly inevitable that electric vehicles (EV’s for short) will be the cars of the future. More specifically, battery electric vehicles (or BEV’s) — which are powered entirely by rechargeable chemical cells — are starting to become practical.
Many major auto manufacturers have BEV’s in development, and a few already have BEV’s on the road today. The challenge in making BEV’s a viable transportation solution is the battery. Batteries must be easy to recharge, able to hold enough charge to drive long distances, and more efficient than gasoline engines. Scientists and engineers around the world are tackling this battery challenge, and major progress is being made. In this kit, you can build and experiment with a new type of environmentally friendly
“fuel cell” to learn about electrochemical cells and BEV’s. The battery is a metal-air electrochemical cell, a type of battery that is widely used in small scale devices. It is ideal for demonstrating battery technology because it does not use any harmful chemicals: it uses only magnesium plates, salt water, and the oxygen in the air to generate electricity. Moreover, magnesium is considered an eco-friendly renewable fuel because it could be harvested cleanly from ocean water. Build 20 different models and power
them with this special battery. Experiment with different concentrations of salt to see how long your battery can run. Learn about electrochemistry and battery technology. One metal plate lasts as long as a regular AA battery (six plates included). Full-color, 64-page manual. 91 building pieces.

ELECTRICITY: MASTER LAB The Physics of Electricity
We encounter electricity everywhere in our lives — at home, in school, even our bodies have electric charges in them. Alternating current (AC), or electric current that cyclically changes its direction, plays a particularly important role in our world. Countless
appliances and devices, including televisions, electric heaters, desk lamps, and smartphone transformers are operated with AC. This is the first science experiment kit to thoroughly explore alternating current in addition to the more commonly addressed direct current (DC), the unidirectional current from standard batteries. With this kit, you can safely experiment with the physical science theories and applications of electricity. Conduct 110 experiments to investigate electrical engineering from AC to DC. Start by exploring the basics of electric current
by building simple circuits with batteries, switches, and lights. Build series and parallel circuits as well as more complex circuits such as a traffic signal and alarm system. Experiment to observe the physical effects of electric current such as heat and magnetism. Discover electrochemistry by building a lemon battery. Play around with permanent magnets and electromagnets to learn about magnetism and its applications, such as relays and solenoid brakes. Operate an electromagnetic coil, capacitor, and transformer in an AC circuit
and examine their behaviors at different frequencies. A special AC generator creates a harmless AC current with a variable frequency, from a few hertz (or cycles per second) to about 10 kilohertz. This device safely enables the exploration of electrical phenomena such as resonance and high-pass, low-pass, and band-pass behaviors. Measure frequencies with the electromechanical frequency meter. The plug-together electric building blocks make circuit assembly quick and easy. A 96-page, full-color manual provides illustrated assembly instructions.

FUEL CELL X7Hydrogen Powered Car
Thames & Kosmos’ original model fuel cell car demonstrates the simplicity and efficiency of hydrogen technology in a tangible, hands-on way. With this kit, you can assemble a model car that runs on water! The fuel cell car in this kit uses a unique reversible fuel cell that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen gas using electric current from a battery pack. These gases are stored in clear tanks located at the back of the vehicle. When the battery pack is removed, and the electric motor is connected to the fuel cell module, the hydrogen and oxygen combine back together again into water, releasing electricity in the process. The motor runs on this electric current, propelling the car forward. Because hydrogen, oxygen, and water are safe and clean chemicals, this type of fuel cell is environmentally friendly and does not produce hazardous emissions. It takes approximately five minutes to split enough water to fill the tanks with hydrogen and oxygen gas, and the car runs for about 5 to 10 minutes on full tanks. The full-color, 16-page manual contains easy, step-by-step instructions for assembling and using the car, as well as scientific explanations.
