NNR BOARD 2015-2016

NNR (Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach) is a not-for-profit organization of

volunteers dedicated to serving the Nonthaburi community and supporting local

charities since 1994. We achieve this by publishing Thani Talk, a free monthly

magazine that has a distribution of 1,400 copies, as well as hosting an annual charity

bazaar. We host monthly socials and organize monthly tours. There are no

membership dues, and anyone living in Nonthaburi is already a member.

Letter from the NNR President

It is with great sadness that I write this

farewell message for the last Thani Talk of the

school year. There has been tragedy and upheaval in

our community in this last month. Our hearts go out

to Tara, John, and Brandon Faseler. It is a horrible

tragedy to lose Anthony, and our collective thoughts

and prayers have been with them. There are no

adequate words to give comfort during such a loss,

but it has been heart warming to see the outpouring

of community support for their family.

As always at this time of the year there will be

families who move on from ISB, Nichada, and

Bangkok. This year has been particularly unsettling

because of the uncertainty with peoples’ jobs in some

sectors. It has been very hard for a lot of families to

sit and wait for the outcome of their job status, and

some families will not receive good news.

Many good families will move away at the end

of this year. During trying times, all we can do is

support each other, try to remain positive, and be

grateful for all we can in our lives. I am always so

touched by the caring and giving in our community,

and I know that will continue.

Being the Chair of the NNR these last 3 years

has been the most rewarding volunteer work I have

ever done. Our community is a place like no other,

and I enjoy living here immensely. To see such

community spirit and to have helped so many local

Thai charities has been an unbelievable experience.

I now pass the leadership over to Henrietta

Bullinger, our very capable and enthusiastic Vice

Chair, to continue the good works. I would like to

thank all of the NNR Board members that I have

worked with over the last 3 years for their

contributions and friendship. I also thank the many

volunteers who have helped in so many different

ways.

Regardless of where your next journey takes

you, I wish you good health, lots of love, and safe

travels.

My sincerest gratitude,

Mare Harvey,

NNR President

This social will be a little bit different

from the usual ones we organize. We will

have four vendors selling jewelry, clothes,

shoes and stainless steel products. The

vendors will support some NNR charities

by donating a fixed fee as a sign of good

will for being invited to sell at the event.

If you need gifts to take home or just

would like something new for yourself,

this is the social to attend.

Nichada will be serving new food

items which will be on the Vapor menu

soon. The vendors will provide some

nibbles too.

You don’t need to bring anything.

Just grab some friends, money for

shopping, and chat with everyone before

they leave for the summer.

NNR May 18th Tour: Floral Arts in Thailand A Bespoke Flower Arranging Workshop

Susanne Rodrigues and Elizabeth Bredin,

NNR Tour Coordinators

There is a rich flower arranging tradition in

Thailand. Indeed, the floral arts epitomize the

glorious intersection of nature and stylized beauty.

This workshop is presented in honour of Visakha

Puja Day, and is organized and generously

sponsored by Asian Tigers. It will be taught by

Khun Chalam, a noted floral design expert.

NNR invites you to attend on Wednesday,

May 18 from 9 am - noon; the workshop will be

followed by a light lunch. Participants will have

the opportunity to create their own floral

arrangement, as well as learn about the history and

symbolism of flowers in Thai culture. In this way,

we will be granted insight into a fascinating aspect

of the culture in which we are fortunate to live.

There is no need to bring any supplies, as all

materials will be considerately provided by Asian

Tigers.

Date: Wednesday, May 18

Time: Workshop 9 am to noon;

Annual Farewell Issue: Bidding Friends Good-Bye

May is a month of major transitions for

many in our expatriate community. Job transfers,

completion of contracts, and the upcoming high

school graduation mark the start of a hectic season

for scores of families.

Due to global economic trends, this year is

an especially pivotal one for many.

In the rush to deal with movers and logistics,

or to attend or host farewell gatherings, oftentimes

we don’t get to touch base with friends and neigh-

bors and say a proper good-bye.

Sergio Palma, Argentinian: Ready to Explore France

Nationality: Argentinian

Hometown: Buenos Aires

Other postings: USA, UK, Spain & China.

Company or organization that brought you to

Thailand: Coca-Cola Co.

Number of years in Thailand: 3 years

Number of children: Two gir ls, ages 10 & 7

Moving to: Paris, France

Plans : I am a trailing spouse. I may be back to my

profession as media producer as I couldn’t do it in

Asia.

Memories :

USA: Shopping shopping shopping. First

daughter!

UK: Walking, exploring, more walking

Spain: Party, party, party! … Second daughter!

Haha

China: Cultural Shock! Loved it!

Thailand: Traveling, Lots of friends!

The common denominator since 2002 is the food.

We always try to eat local, learn the recipes, adapt

and enjoy the new flavors.

It saves money, opens your mind, your senses and

is really good for our girls.

It’s also a great way to start to learn the language.

The names, the prices, the weight, the recipes…

Advice for newcomers:

If Thailand is your first destination, you are

lucky. It’s the best in Southeast Asia. If it is not

your first, you are lucky too! Believe me.

Eat local.

Slow down.

Enjoy life.

So for the past three years, Thani Talk has

published the annual Farewell Edition in May. We

invite a sampling of “Leavers” from our diverse

international community to share memories of

their time in Thailand, and to pass along nuggets

of helpful advice gleaned from their personal

experience.

Go ahead, sit back, put your feet up, and

enjoy a journey through the following pages as

neighbors bid adieu. Liz Lu,

Plans: First and foremost, settle down and soak

the change. Get the kids comfortable and happy in

their new schools. Then plan to ramp up on

engineering and management certifications while I

look for employment.

Memories: The awesome polite Thai people

and the food. The friends that we have made at

work and at Mansions in the Park. Living at

Mansions in the Park has been such a blessing.

They have made our stay even more awesome.

Advice for newcomers: Accept all that

Thailand does have to offer and blend in. Learn

the language.

Plans: We'll spend the summer in the states and

then move to Jordan in August where Jason and I

will be working at the U.S. Embassy there.

Memories: One of the many advantages of living

in Nichada has been the opportunity to develop

friendships with people from all over the

world. As a family we've loved exploring

Thailand. Personally, the weekly visits to the

Home for the Destitute have fulfilled a need in me

as an RN (Registered Nurse), and I will miss the

residents there.

Advice for newcomers: Get out and meet as

many people as you can over the first few

months. Give yourself time and think over where

you'd like to contribute and then dive in.

Number of children: Two. Elder daughter

grade at ISB.

Moving to what city and country: Moving back

to Houston, Texas.

Plans: Will spend the next few months settling

my younger daughter back in school and then

hope to go back to work. Looking forward to

spending time with my elder daughter during her

college years and catching up with all my friends

in Houston, including all the friends we met

during our expat assignments.

Memories: I will always treasure the fr iend-

ships I made here. Settling into Nichada was easy

compared to Jakarta, so I enjoyed meeting and

making new friends right from the beginning.

Loved going out with my book club on

Wednesdays to see places or just to hang out.

Enjoyed working on a memory photo book about

life in Nichada. This book was sold as a fundraiser

and I was very happy with the feedback. Bangkok

was very close to my native country of India, so

we enjoyed visiting family more often than what

we were able to when we were in Houston.

Enjoyed volunteering be it school as the editor of

Idcide.com

the PTA magazine or for NNR.

Advice for newcomers: Reach out and meet

people, Get out of the house and explore.

Volunteer. Join a book club. Go out and see the

sights of Bangkok and places around here. This is

a great experience so go out and enjoy it.

Anita Palazuelos Eichentopf, Bolivian: Zumba Instructor Heads to America

law and son back in

Scotland.

Moving to what city

and country: Houston,

Texas (Texas is a

country, right?)

Plans: My husband

Douglas moved on to

Houston already at the

end of March, so

everything should be set

up and organised by the

time I get there in

August…shouldn’t

it?! Well, maybe not,

but my plans are to survive five months apart from

Douglas, see Finlay (our youngest) graduate from

high school and Jonny (our middle child) marry in

July, then get Finlay settled in to his gap year pro-

gramme at an outdoor activities centre in the

Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland, before eventually

focusing on our new life in Houston, as first-time

empty nesters. The US is still a new and

foreign country to us so there will be the inevitable

hiccups and bumps but this time, I know I have so

many more contacts and friends to draw on, as is

the way with the expat lifestyle.

Memories: Where to star t? “Amazing Thai-

land,” “Sawadii kha,” “Mai pen rai,” fabulous

food, cheap beer, oh so expensive wine, roasting

hot Songkrans, learning the art of speed-packing

for numerous travel adventures, making so many

great friends here in Nichada of multiple nation-

alities are some of my immediate memories. Nor

will I forget my experiences of visiting two over-

seas prisoners at the women’s correctional centre

on Ngam Wong Wan Road. My fear of starting

out on this volunteer activity followed by the

development over time of two firm friendships. I

have never ceased to be amazed at how blessed I

have been by these ladies (yes, you’d expect it to

be the other way round, yes?) and their strength

and resolve to make the best of a bad situation.

Advice for newcomers: One of the best pieces of

advice we received when we moved to Thailand

was to take the opportunity to travel as much as

possible, to make a point of getting outside the

“Bubble” for a vacation or mini-break at least

once every 6-8 weeks. I think we managed to

achieve that, more or less, and I couldn’t advocate

it more. There is so much to see and do whilst

living in this corner of the globe.

Advice for newcomers:

It has been a unique and enriching experience to

live in Thailand and also in Nichada!! To everyone

with whom I spent my more than 4 years of

memories (good and not so good), I say "See you

soon!!" Here I've learned three important life

lessons:

1.To be happy is a personal choice, and Thailand

shows many options for this, starting with the

warm smile;

2.Talking about the best time to do things:

NOW is the correct answer!! So... call!! Reach

out !! Talk with who is near to you! Do it Now!

3. Let's learn to recognize and value each of the

communities that are part of this our "Small

World" which is Nichada.

Plans: Work for the NGO (Non-Governmental

Organization) Days For Girls, which empowers

girls through education and health services.

Memories: Coconut smoothies out the front gate,

massages, great friends, Muay Thai boxing, scuba

diving, traveling, running partners, yoga, cheering

at IASIS events, high school plays, Cultural Con-

ventions, Panther Paws, biking, golf cart as our

second car, amazing teachers who have impacted

my girls lives and learning, PTA, church, wonder-

ful students at ISB, connecting with and learning

from new friends from around the world, Home

for the Destitute, kids walking to school and all

activities, and the list goes on and on. Truly it has

been a gift to live here the past four years.

Advice for newcomers: Get involved and get

out; take advantage of this amazing part of the

country and go exploring as often as you can. Try

new foods, do new things, visit as many countries

as you can. Make memories. Also, do some ser-

vice; there're so many ways you can give back to

not just the community, but to the school. What

you'll find is you will get so much more out of

your experience than you will ever give. Greet

call the Central Coast of California.

Memories: So many memories, but bike r ides

across the river, Saturdays at Chatuchak, and the

many, many happy hours with friends are stand-

outs, although none as memorable as the hundreds

of students we have been blessed to teach.

Advice for newcomers: Don' t sweat the small

stuff and soon you will realize that you've been

dropped into the Land of Oz. Enjoy every

minute!!

Moving to: Gothenburg, Sweden

Plans: I am happy to return to my work as a Civil

Engineer and my husband continues within Saab.

My teenager will start International School in

Gothenburg and the two youngest will go back to

Swedish school. Hopefully we can return on new

assignment and adventures abroad in a few years.

Memories: We will bring home all memories of

the travels we have been fortunate to experience in

the region. We also love the Thai food

and especially all fresh fruit. But mostly we feel

blessed to have met so many nice people and made

friends from all around the world.

Advice for newcomers: Bring an open mind and

that feels best for you.

Advice for newcomers: Find ways to help oth-

Hometown: Dickinson, Tex-

Texas

Other postings: Jakarta,

Employer: Hallibur ton

Number of years in Thailand: about 1.5

Moving to: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Plans: We are departing a little later than the other

summer crowd, with a late August anticipated

date. I plan to be here most of the summer until

then, with hopefully a few scattered touristy trips

in the area.

Memories: The life of an expat, you are never

short in opportunities to meet some really amazing

people and make long lasting friendships. I have

had the pleasure of participating in the NNR and

other groups, and have built some wonderful

relationships through them and been able to get to

know various local charities. It's been wonderful

to participate in the Monday bicycling group and

ride through the klongs and see things you would

never see in your normal Nichada day.

Advice for newcomers: There is a reason the

slogan is so catchy… Just do it. If you have the

opportunity, just do it. It's so easy to find reasons

to not do things, and then you will have so much

pass you by. Go on that bike ride with the

group. Go on the outing to the see the local

businesses etc. Get involved. Enjoy!

Thani Talk-May 2016 Cover Story: Farewells

Plans: We are repatr iating to our home coun-

try, moving back into our good old house and local

neigbourhood. The plan is to get settled back in,

which we understand will take some time for all of

us. Get ready for school and work and once the

snow starts falling - get those skis ready for some

cross country in the forest outside Oslo and try out

the downhill slopes again!

Memories: Great biking tr ips with the Pathum

Thani Jakayans and good outdoor Bootcamps. A

lot of fun with the many ISB sports- and cultural

activities/events as well as Nichada community

festivals; Loy Kratong, Halloween, Songkran. I

will miss the Thai food and many excellent

restaurants in Bangkok as well as roof-top bars and

riverside venues.

Advice for newcomers: Head for Chatuchak

weekend market and enjoy the great Spanish Paella

lunch once you have had enough of shopping for

things for your house. Finish off with homemade

coconut ice-cream from one of the many vendors.

Try the river bus from Nonthaburi pier to

downtown. Best fun is to start with a water taxi

from Pakkret pier to Nonthaburi! Join NNR, try

out one (or several!) of the many sports activities

on offer, be an engaged parent at the school of

your children and learn some Thai - it makes life

so much easier. And travel! There are so many

beautiful and fascinating places to visit in Asia!!

Local food carts offer tasty chicken fried rice

There are two talented ladies outside Nichada’s

front gate who each has a food cart. Khun Ratree and

Khun Ooy have their unique style of cooking chicken fried

rice, and their made-to-order offerings are delicious. If you

need a lot of servings to go, let them know a day in

advance, and they will have the rice ready and boxed up

for you. They are located behind the brick wall across from

New Bangkok Guide Hits Stores May 1

Best Second-Hand Book Store in Bangkok

The 20th edition of the famous Bangkok

Guide, regarded by many expatriates as the bible

for settling in and finding one’s way around the

greater Bangkok area, will be available in Asia

Books and Kinokuniya beginning May 1st.

The first edition was published by

ANZWG (Australian and New Zealand Wom-

en’s Group) 45 years ago, and the thoroughly

researched and highly useful publication has

earned a solid reputation as the best guidebook

around. Employers often give the Bangkok

Guide to new hires who are moving to Thailand,

oftentimes even before they leave their home

countries. The Guide is updated every 2 to 3

years, and each edition contains excellent

recommendations from experts.

An electronic edition of the Guide will be

available as Bangkok Guide: Relocation Essen-

tials e-book, which will be available on

Amazon.com and iTunes.

a stock of over 18,000 titles spread over three

floors, mostly in the English language. Their

stock includes fiction (romance, crime, mystery,

You may also be able to sell them your

gently used books. If you are looking to sell a

large number of books it might be worth email-

ing your list of books to the owner at:

letting you know which titles he is not interested

Teen Gives Solo Concert and Donates to Sparrow Home

We would like to thank the following people for

donating to Nonthaburi charities:

Yichen Zhu: Yichen's solo Guzheng concer t

raised over B12,000 for Sparrow Home! The

money raised will go towards improving their

playground.

Donations to the Home for Hope:

Mary Beth Skrobala Warrener: Kitchen ware

Julie Lanteigne: Soup bowls

Jessica Zaman: Household goods and clothing

Vidhya Parasuraman: Children’s books for the

Bumblebee Free Library.

her only request in return was a donation of any

amount for Sparrow Home. To raise awareness of

the benefit concert, Yichen put up posters inside

ISB, performed a short blurb at the ISB’s Got

Talent show, and made announcements both

inside ISB as well as the ExPats of Pakkret

Facebook page with the help of NNR Charity

Co-chair Wanda Grove.

The concert was an amazing success far

exceeding Yichen’s humble hopes in terms of

attendance and donations. It raised over B12,000!

She hopes to do this again next year, as playing

music and being helpful are two of her greatest

passions.

Many people want to contribute back to the

community and help those in need, whether it be

through time, donating items, or money, while a

select few are gifted with a specific talent and find

ways to channel that for their grander purpose.

Meet Yichen Zhu, from Beijing, China, who did

just that with her talent.

Yichen, an ISB high school junior, plays

Guzheng, an ancient Chinese traditional plucked

musical instrument with over 2,000 years of

history. She began playing at the age of 5, and has

given annual performances at ISB since her start

there in 2010.

Ever since she began high school, she had

the idea for a charity concert benefitting Sparrow

Home charity to raise money and awareness of the

charity itself, while at the same time introducing

the music of this beautiful Chinese traditional

instrument to the community. She chose Sparrow

Home because she believed many people, just like

her, only heard of its name and did not know much

about it. Sparrow Home is a project fully supported

by donations aimed at helping children whose

mothers are in prison by giving them a better

environment for their development while keeping

that mother-child relationship alive.

This idea finally came to fruition on March

29 of this year, when Yichen performed for an

unexpectedly large crowd in the ISB library, and Jennifer Skobel

This month is the one year anniversary of the

horrible earthquakes that afflicted Nepal. The

Moonlight Foundation runs the Moonlight school

which serves children living in poverty in Kath-

mandu. The school hosts ISB’s Global Citizen

Week (GCW) trips, so we would like to support

their recovery. In the immediate aftermath of the

devastating earthquake, our community sent dona-

tions to help rebuild their school. But they are still

struggling and need continued support. It's com-

mon that after a natural disaster, supporters pour

their hearts out but the event quickly falls out of the

news. Please help by buying commemorative t-

shirts and attending the Yoga Pray For Nepal fund-

raiser on Saturday May 7, at ISB. For more info,

contact Bill Schoonover ([email protected]) or Na-

pisa C. Pant ([email protected]).

NNR welcomes donations of money and

in-kind gifts to the many local charities it supports.

A group it recently started helping is the Home of

Hope, which houses 40 to 70 needy children

whose parents are unable to take care of them.

Home of Hope is managed by Our Lady of Mercy

Catholic Church.

Father Paolo dedicates his life to ensure

that these children have a warm and welcoming

home. He also focuses on the children's education

and future well being.

The Home needs clothing, towels, linens,

cleaning supplies, books, toys, and food. Every-

thing can be dropped off at the home of Sandra

Wilson or Wanda Grove. They live next door to

each other in Prestige 1, Soi 3, 1204 and 1205.

Every donation is greatly appreciated.

Highlights: April NNR Tour Thani Talk-May 2016

Highlights: Market & Museum Tour

On April 20th I joined the NNR tour to the

Or Tor Kor market to shop, explore and enjoy.

The market is located on Kamphaengphet Road,

opposite Chatuchak Weekend Market and is open

every day from 6 am to 8 pm. It has a reputation

as being one of the more “upscale” markets of

Bangkok with the highest quality and freshest

fruits and vegetables.

After arriving, I was immediately struck by

the openness of the market and also by how

nice and clean it was. Clearly, its reputation is

well earned as the variety and quality of the

products were excellent. The market had row

after row of venders selling beautifully displayed

vegetables and fruits which not only looked

delicious but also provided great photo

opportunities.

Another highlight of

the market was the

great selection of pre

-made food. There

were curries, roasted

and fried chicken,

assorted types of fish

and many other dish-

es that would be

great for an easy

lunch or supper! I

was also surprised

by the vast number

of different types of

Thai sweets which

were available. They were beautifully displayed

and all looked delicious. Aside from the food

stalls, there were also venders selling other

products like baskets, clothing and jewelry.

While I was shopping I was pleasantly

surprised to see a big group of people parading

through the market with drums beating and smiles

on their faces. It would seem this was a Songkran

related celebration as the vendors and others were

making donations and then pouring water on the

parade participants. Everyone in our group

seemed to really enjoy the visit to the market as

we all came away with bags filled with treats,

clothes or food for supper!!!!

Our next stop on the trip was Bangkok’s

Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Surpris-

ingly, this beautiful building is located within a

short drive from Nichada at 3 Vibhavadi Rangsit

Road. It is open daily (except Monday) 10 am to 6

pm, and it’s well worth a visit for the art lover. I

was struck by how bright and open the building

was, which of course lends itself well to house and

display some amazing contemporary art pieces.

The museum opened in 2012 and displays artwork

from many well-known Thai artists as well as

work by international artists. The collection

includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and

photographs. Some were more traditional while

others were quite dark and thought provoking.

It was enjoyable to stroll through the 5-story

building and enjoy a huge variety of artistic talent.

After visiting the museum all of us gathered to

enjoy a treat at the coffee shop on the main level.

While we chatted, we saw a group of young monks

and their teachers entering the museum. The

image was striking: their orange robes against the

vast white foyer of the museum. They seemed

intrigued with the pieces they saw, and I’m sure

they must have enjoyed their visit as much as we

all did.

Kids Action For Kids Transforms Lives By Supporting Surgeries

Community News Thani Talk-May 2016

First of all thank you to Thani Talk for giving us this

opportunity to inform the community about our organization.

Hopefully a lot of you have already heard about us.

For those who have not, allow us to do a quick presentation.

Kids Action for Kids (KAFK) is a Norwegian charity organi-

zation established in 2009 to help less fortunate children in

Southeast Asia. Our main focus so far has been to raise funds

to finance surgeries for children born with cleft lip or cleft

palate.

From the start in 2009 up to now, we have financed

and helped organize hundreds of successful surgeries in

Thailand and Myanmar together with Operation Smile

Thailand, the organization that performs the surgeries with its

volunteer medical professionals. Our main partner (since

2015 and onwards)- Benchachinda Group- matches all the

funds we raise.

To give an example for what this means, we can go

back to our last fundraiser here in Nichada. A lot of you

visited our Easter Bazaar outside Villa supermarket in

March. At the Bazaar we managed to raise a fantastic

B95,462. Benchachinda Group matched this amount, so all

together we raised B190,924. Each surgery

costs approximately B25,000, so that means almost eight

children will get a life changing operation.

This is fantastic. Thank you for your support at our

Easter Bazaar! The surgeries will help these children so that

they can eat, talk, develop and..... smile properly.

Kids Action for Kids’ next mission will be in Chiang

Mai in the fall. This will be an ongoing mission where 100

children will receive their life-changing surgery.

If you would like to get involved in our work, please

contact us at: [email protected]. We are always

looking for people who want to contribute!

Cub Scouts Pack 701 Hosts Graduation Ceremony Boys Donate Earnings to Local Library

Community News Thani Talk-May 2016

On April 23, Cub Scouts Pack 701 of

Bangkok held a graduation and awards ceremony

at ISB. In all, 26 Cub Scouts received badges and

new neckerchiefs as they graduated to the next

level in the scouting program. Two boys, Coryn

Irish and Ben O'Connell, crossed a ceremonial

bridge and graduated to become Boy Scouts.

Coryn also earned the highest achievement for a

Cub Scout, the Arrow of Light.

The ceremony opened with a presentation of

colors by the U.S. Embassy Marine Security Guard

Detachment. The Cub Scouts then presented their

cash donation of B28,652 to Liz Lu, founder of the

Bumble Bee Free Library. The cash donation

came from money that Cub Scout members had

made through saving their allowances and doing

chores such as caring for pets, washing dishes, and

doing yard work. Pack 701 also earned money

from a successful bake sale. Some scouts opted for

birthday money instead of gifts in order to donate

to the library.

The awards ceremony was followed by a

Blue & Gold Carnival in the elementary school

cafeteria. Older Boy Scouts manned game booths

for the younger Cub Scouts before everyone sat

down to enjoy a well-deserved graduation banquet.

Travel: Club Med Guilin, China Thani Talk-May 2016

Club Med Guilin , China

I had an itch. I needed to go somewhere this

past Songkran break. It was unusual. I normally

enjoy the traffic-free roads of Bangkok, enabling

me to go downtown in about 20 minutes. This year

was different. I had an itch. I needed to scratch. It

had to be somewhere close, some place I’ve never

been before, some place not busy.

Club Med Guilin in southeastern China

came to mind when I read a review in a local mag-

azine. I called the Club Med travel agent in Thai-

land, expecting to be told it’s fully booked. To my

surprise, the two rooms I needed for my family of

five were available; the price not too bad.

I booked the rooms, the air tickets and the

transfer through Club Med. It was so easy.

However there’s a bit of a downside to this travel

arrangement, which was the flying time from

Bangkok to Guilin airport.

We flew out of Bangkok on Cathay Pacific

at 1:20 a.m. to Hong Kong, endured a 4-hour

transit stop in Hong Kong, and took an additional

90-minute flight to Guilin. (That was what was

offered through Club Med. You can of course pick

your own flight arrangements).

The kids (14, 9, and 7) were exhausted when

we arrived but took only a night’s rest to recover.

And RECOVER we did!!! Guilin is indeed a

beautiful city surrounded by two rivers, four lakes

and karst mountains. The weather was perfect,

crisp and cool. Although the weather forecast

predicated rain the entire time we were there, it

only rained one day. How lucky! I was also told

it’s their travel low season; a rest time in

between the Chinese New Year and the upcoming

summer vacation (starting May 1st). The resort

was at less than half its capacity during our stay.

Club Med Guilin is located about an hour’s

drive from the airport. Upon our arrival, we were

greeted by an English/Thai speaking G.O. (Gentle

Organizer, as they are called). He was beyond gra-

cious and helpful. We were checked in to our

rooms within about half an hour. The two connect-

ing rooms were spacious and comfortable. Each

room had a convertible sofa bed.

The concept of Club Med Guilin is of course

桂林

Page 45: Thani Talk 2016 May

45

Travel: Club Med Guilin, China Thani Talk-May 2016

just like any other Club Med. It’s an all-inclusive

resort where meals, drinks (yes, alcohol too!),

sports and many other activities are included. Out-

side excursions are extra. Petit clubs (for ages 2-3),

mini clubs (ages 4-10) and teen clubs (ages 11-17)

are also free and are filled with activities, ranging

from biking, flying trapeze to archery and golf.

Our first day there was spent relaxing in the

resort itself. First we enjoyed our first lunch at the

Noodle Bar, which is conveniently located in the

hotel building itself. Every noodle dish was

delicious. I especially liked their chili sauce. It was

spicy and so flavorful. Then we spent the rest of

the afternoon and evening walking around the vast

areas of the resort, which is home to over 100

sculptures by internationally known artists from all

over the world.

The clear, crisp cool air was refreshing and

was such a nice break from the heat back home.

The dinner buffet was filled with a wide variety of

delicious international cuisine.

The next day the kids wanted to try flying

trapeze right away. So we signed them up at the

mini clubs, cheered them on, shipped them off and

off we went to the many awaiting activities for

adults which we looked forward to doing. With a

guide, we started hiking outside of the resort to the

adjacent village to experience the culture, and the

Chinese rice farmers’ way of living. Then we tried

other sports activities like archery and golf. We

even went to a fitness class! In the afternoon, we

spent time mountain biking outside the resort. It

was a short trip meant for beginners. There was

also an intermediate trip that we didn’t get a

chance to do.

The day ended too soon. We picked up the

kids and enjoyed our dinner. The evening ended

with night entertainment appropriate for every age.

We were all exhausted by the end of the day.

The following day we went on two family

excursions. The first one was horse back riding. I

did this one for my horse-crazy child. It was okay

and rather pricey, made worse by the rain. This

one you could of course skip.

In the afternoon we picked a Li River and

Crown Cave excursion, the most popular excur-

sion. We took a bus to the Li River bank and em-

barked on a boat trip to the cave. The boat journey

was serene and very majestically beautiful. The

mountaintops were covered in fog after the rain,

making the scenery so indescribably picturesque.

The rest of our remaining time at Club Med

Guilin was spent relaxing. We did a sidecar

motorcycle excursion (extra cost) for one hour.

The kids had a ton of fun! The adults tried their

hands (and feet) on trapeze for the first time in

their lives! It was terrifying but so much fun. The

instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful.

To sum it all up, our Guilin trip was a perfect

getaway. We were especially impressed with the

service there! We came back relaxed, energized

and ready to tackle the busy bustling days of

school and work.

P.S. There was major road construction from

the airport to the hotel. Construction should be

completed within a year. So next Songkran

possibly? My kids already want to go back!

Benihana. The Japanese Steakhouse

Restaurant Review Thani Talk-May 2016

pare the food while juggling knives, cracking

jokes, and flinging food became as much a part of

the experience as the food itself.

Fast forward 50 years and Teppan-yaki is

well-known to most people and the novelty has

worn off a bit. That being said, no one does this

style of food better than Benihana. I took my kids

to the Benihana at the AVANI Atrium hotel

(formerly the Amari Atrium Hotel) on Petchburi

Road between Asok and Thong Lor. They are

open for lunch until 3pm, and then open again for

dinner at 6pm. The place looks great with funky

Japanese décor in blacks and reds (Benihana

means ‘red flower’ in Japanese). But of course the

reason you come here is for the food and the way

it’s cooked.

I went there for lunch, and they have a

convenient brunch menu for B790++ per person.

This includes edamame, soup, two salads, access

to an oyster bar, sushi and sashimi, garlic fried

rice and finally a choice of grilled beef, salmon,

pork, or chicken breast. It is a great deal

considering the amount of food and the

‘performance.” You can upgrade this set menu

with fancy cuts of meat and fish. There is also an

entire a la carte menu. My friend and I ordered

the set brunch, and I ordered gyoza and shrimp

tempura for the two boys. It was too much food

and we had to take it home, so my advice is to

arrive hungry and try not to over-order.

Now for the cooking. As expected, we had a

great chef who spoke good English, and kept us

thoroughly entertained. As my son said, “this is

fun to watch.” The restaurant is great with kids.

The chef was playfully teasing and joking with the

boys. He even allowed them behind the grill

where they tried their hand, unsuccessfully, at

tossing an egg in the air with a spatula without

breaking it. Of course the chef is the star of the

show, but we found all the staff very helpful and

friendly. Something the boys really enjoyed were

the chopsticks which were cleverly tied together

with rubber bands which made it easy for them to

use.

It was a great experience and definitely a

great option for a meal downtown with the family.

Many of our international readers will be

familiar with the Benihana chain of restaurants. In

case you aren’t, the first Benihana was opened in

1964 in New York City and was one of the first

restaurants in the U.S. to offer authentic Japanese

cuisine. What made Benihana unique was the

“hibachi,” or more precisely Teppan-yaki style of

cooking. This means a number of guests sit around

communal tables, as a highly skilled chef slices,

dices and grills the food to perfection. Given the

founder’s flair for the dramatic and the fact that the

restaurant was located on Broadway, Benihana

began to offer an experience that was part dining

and part entertainment. Watching the chefs pre-John Marinos
