Thank you for your continued support as we celebrate 90 years as part of the community!

This Sunday, we celebrate Mother’s Day. It is a day we set aside to honor all mothers who should be recog-nized every day of the year.

I believe, without reservation, that mothers have the most important job in these troubled times. What an awesome responsi-bility to be in charge of molding our children to be the God-fearing, lov-ing, courteous, kind, honest and pro-ductive human beings we hope them to be! Their roles are often taken for granted.

Fathers are quick to take credit when their children succeed, but rarely take the blame for their fail-ures.

A few years ago, I heard someone say that the greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother in front of them. I’m sorry to say that I learned that too late.

In spite of an insensitive husband, my wife did an excellent job raising our four children. For this I am for-

ever grateful. This Mother’s Day, please allow

me to encourage fathers to help their wives be the type of mothers they desire their children to have.

If my Mother’s Day message seems directed to fathers, it is. I offer no apologies. I feel, without a doubt, that if our children are to have the mothers we want them to have, it depends on us.

To all the mothers, I say Happy Mother’s Day! Always remember that your children are God’s gift to you. To the children, I say honor your mother on this special day. Make a commitment today to love, honor and respect her every day for the rest of her life.

My final appeal is to the fathers. There is no better day then this Mother’s Day to make a decision to be a godly example for your family. Decide today to love your children’s mother in front of them. In fact, the Bible says that you should love her as God loves the church.

If you have any questions or com-ments, please write Harold Keller at Get High on Life, P.O. Drawer U, Reserve, LA 70084; call 985-652-8477 or e-mail [email protected].

get HIgH ON LIFe

I’ve been blessed with five children and am now in the wonderful stage of grand-children.

For me, moth-erhood is the most challeng-ing role of my life, yet one of my greatest joys. It’s been an incredible experience to watch pieces of my heart walk and talk and move independently.

Fortunately for me, I’ve had a tre-mendous example. My mom, Jeanne Keller, is the most giving person I have ever known.

She’s the quiet strength that bal-ances my dad’s outgoing and impul-sive nature and the role model for every decision I make. She loves unconditionally, shares unselfishly and exhibits patience my husband

only dreams of being mine. It will be easy to celebrate her this

Mother’s Day.In addition to my own mom, I

thank God for women who have served as examples for me. Many of them not only care for their own children, but impact the lives of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, students, children of friends and the neighbor’s children, too. And I do not neglect to pray for women whose hearts are filled with love to give, yet their wombs are empty.

We may all celebrate Mother’s Day in different ways, but I ask you to join me in sending a card to a woman, other than your mother, who needs encouragement.

Psalm 127:3 beautifully declares, “children are a gift of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.”

May God continue to pour out His grace on all mothers as we daily care for our precious gifts.

Nurses’ quick actions save man’s life By Brooke roBichaux

L’OBSERVATEUR

LAPLACE — When Mickey Roussel of Lutcher woke up with chest and arm pain last month, he didn’t real-ize he was on the verge of a massive widowmaker heart attack.

Characterized by 100 percent block-age in one of the main arteries, wid-owmaker heart attacks are deadly cardiac events.

Thankfully, Roussel is alive today because of the quick actions taken by St. James Parish Hospital nurses and staff.

Amanda Domino of Gramercy has worked in health care for 29 years, advancing from CNA to RN. Still fairly new to the emergency room,

Domino responded to a heart attack for the first time when Roussel col-lapsed minutes after walking through the door.

Kim Burkett, RN, jumped in with-out hesitation as Roussel was rushed to the trauma room. Over the next 20 minutes, Roussel was shocked five times as his heart fell in and out of the fatal rhythm.

With assistance from Dr. Rusty Cook, nursing assistant Leanna Humphries and respiratory therapist Lakeya Phillip, Domino and Burkett administered CPR and inserted an IV to stabilize Roussel.

An hour and a half later, the team made arrangements to transfer

amanda Domino and kim Burkett were two members of the St. James Parish hospital team that recently rushed to save the life of Mickey roussel, who stag-gered into the hospital suffering from a widowmaker heart attack.

LAPLACE — Growing up in Colombia, Andrea Perea jumped at every opportu-nity to take charge of first aid in her elementary school classroom, even if it mostly meant sticking Band-Aids over cuts and scrapes.

Compassion for others and experience volunteer-ing with Red Cross stuck with her through the years, guiding her toward a criti-cal care paramedic career with Acadian Ambulance Service.

Perea’s journey wasn’t a clear-cut path. After mov-ing to the United States 10 years ago, she struggled to acclimate to American cul-ture and become fluent in a language she’d never been exposed to.

While taking English as a Second Language courses, Perea landed a job working for a successful chemical plant. Yet, deep down, she knew she wasn’t where she needed to be.

“I think working in EMS was always in my blood,”

Perea said. “After I moved to the U.S., I worked at chemi-cal plants for a while and made more money there, but my heart wasn’t in it.”

Perea, who today lives in LaPlace, used money from

her plant work to fund her education at National EMS Academy, a division of Acadian Ambulance Service operating in partnership

LAPLACE — Elvin Ray Bass of LaPlace doesn’t con-sider himself a hero.

According to Bass, true heroes of the military realm are the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the fight for freedom.

With 37 years of ser-vice with the St. John VA Outpatient Clinic and VFW, Bass supports veterans read-justing to society, the same way he found support upon returning home from over-seas.

Growing up in Northern Louisiana, Bass knew beyond doubt that he would have a military career.

“In high school, I did a delayed entry program

where you could join before you graduate,” Bass said. “That’s how sure I was about going into the military.”

Bass served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1983 and was stationed primarily in Korea during a time when no wars were ongoing but ten-sions still ran high.

During his service, he achieved the rank of ser-geant.

While his experience was positive, Bass knows every veteran comes home with unique burdens. It motivates him to volunteer locally and federally, aiding veterans’ transitions back into civilian life by extending resources and mentorship.

A full-time employee of the VA outpatient clinic at 4004 W. Airline Highway in Reserve, Bass checks in vet-erans and assists them with appointments.

“It’s something for them to fall back on in their time of need,” Bass said. “The VA Clinic gives another
