A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC

Typhoon Haiyan - Deaths & Displacements of Homes

Survival & Rescue Aid - Throughout the 4 Weeks of Advent

Holy Land Pilgrimage

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

During the last seven days, as the world goes about its own business and we go about our own daily responsibilities, over 11 million people in Tacloban, Cebu, and surrounding islands in the Philippine are suffering dearly both with deaths and displacements of homes. Our hearts and prayers go our to all those who are affected.

Second Collection for the 4 Weeks of Advent—

Typhoon Haiyan Survival & Rescue Aid

In our Pastoral Liturgy Council last Tuesday, we have as a parish agreed that during the four weeks of Advent 2013 there will be a second collection for the survival and rescue effort caused by the typhoon.

Through the instructions of the USCCB and of our Archdiocese, all donation received will be sent directly to Catholic Relief Services. Check should be made payable to Catholic Relief Services with special notation on the memo line: “Typhoon Haiyan Recovery 2013.”

Dolly Tildago & Connie Lamdagan, members of our PLC, volunteered to oversee this effort and to coordinate all future aids concerning this tragedy. If you have any questions, you may contact them directly or our parish office.

Right, Ruined/Rotten, and Resurrected Relationship

Last Sunday, my homily focused on the three stages of relationship:

(a) Right Relationship, (b) Ruined or Rotten Relationship, and (c) Resurrected Relationship.

Right Relationship: As we enter a new friendship or a new courtship, we begin a relationship that seems right; everything seems to go right, perfectly and smooth; everyone is mutually happy.

Ruined or Rotten Relationship: Through the years, the relationship will change some for the better and other for the worse. The differences or conflicts

could lead to a ruined relationship or on a verge of a breakup.

When the conflicts last for a long period of time or the suffering and abuse continue, one could feel as if this is a rotten relationship; nothing seems to change through the years; life seems to stuck in one place; there is no place to escape or the way out seems hopeless.

Run or Rescue Behavior in a Ruined or Rotten Relationship: In dealing with these complexities and challenges of a ruined or rotten relationship, a person could run away from the problems; the conflicts could be too much to deal and there are no good options for a resolution. On the other hand, there is a natural instinctual behavior that we want to rescue the problems or the person; this rescuing behavior may bring about great results or may lead to a discouraging outcome;

Resurrected Relationship: As Christians, our call is to move to the next stage from a ruined or rotten relationship to a resurrected relationship. In a resurrected thinking, we are call to imitate Christ’s suffering, dying, rising from the cross. We need to move beyond the rescuing or the running away mode, but to courageously and prudently ask for prayer and support. In faith we are all resurrected people.

Wish Upon A Star - Touch & Heal This World 2013 Concert

Last Saturday was our parish fundraising event concert; on behalf of our parishioners, I am truly grateful for the performers, instrumentalists, organizing committees, parish & school staff for all their hard work and sacrifices. All of us have come together and made the event successful and delightful.

Holy Land Trip for the Year of Faith - 16 Parishioners

As you read my weekend message, I am already on my way to the Holy Land with 12 parishioners from our parish and 4 others from neighboring parishes. Please keep us in your prayers for safety and spiritual enrichment. I too will pray for all of you and for the families and victims in the Philippines.

Be informed in your faith! Be interested in your activities! Be involved in your church and community.

WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH

,

NOT WATCHING FOR THE SECOND COMING As we near the end of the Church year, the scriptures become more urgent. Both the prophet Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel according to Luke offer graphic pictures of a terrible future. But we are missing the message if we use these passages to speculate about when the world will end. The troubles predicted have already occurred, and then some. In the last century alone we have seen devastation beyond anything the ancient prophets could have imagined.

We weren't given these passages to strike fear in our hearts, but faith. The sun of justice will rise, Malachi assures us, for those who are faithful. And Jesus promises, "By your perseverance you will secure your lives." But it is Paul who brings the message down to earth. The Thessalonians were so sure that the end of the world was upon them, some of them had stopped working! Paul states his case clearly: "If anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat." We are not called to worry about how things will end, but to live today faithfully.

Treasures from Our Tradition We are faced with strong and disturbing readings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist interpretation focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Rather than

dreading the future, today's liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life's inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human history.

Occasionally, some Christians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world's end, but they have thus

far been disappointed.

"Nothing lasts forever" is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great regularity. Today's liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the towel, today's liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world. JS Paluch Co.

The Lord said:

I think thoughts of peace and not affliction. You will call upon me, and I will answer you,

and I will lead back your captives from

every place. (Entrance Antiphon, 33rd Sunday in

Ordinary Time, Breaking Bread)

Prayer for the

Philippines

God, who quiets great winds and s lls rough seas,

We ask your protec on for the people of the Philippines.

Comfort them in their fear.

Stay close to them in their danger.

And we ask the intercession of Your Blessed Mother

That together with her and with all your holy saints

We may stand in solidarity with our Filipino brothers and sisters

through their darkest hour

through their longest night.

Give us the courage to remain steadfast

To reach out to them in their need

To comfort them in their sorrow

To hold them as closely as You hold them

To see them through to morning.

Amen. © CRS www.crs.org

HELPING THE VICTIMS OF TYPHOON HAIYAN IN THE PHILIPPINES Urgent Message From Rev. Msgr. Joseph Brennan, Moderator of the Curia/Vicar General, Archdiocese of Los Angeles Typhoon Haiyan has struck the very heart of the Philippines. The death and destruction are indescribable. Once again our hearts have been touched just as surely as they were in the aftermath of the earthquake which so recently struck essentially the same region. The Archdiocese is recommending to our parishes a call to action sponsored by the UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS. It is an invitation to take up a second collection for the victims of the typhoon within the next two weeks. Please use the attached transmittal form and forward your check to the Office of Life, Justice and Peace here at the Archdiocese if you choose to conduct such a collection.

A second option - also recommended by the Archdiocese and the National Conference - would be to support efforts being undertaken by CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES. In that case you could do the following:

Donate directly to CRS with a Credit Card by calling 1-877-435-7277 or by accessing their website at ‘Catholic Relief Services’ where you will quickly and easily be directed to the process for helping the victims of the typhoon.

Take up a special collection in your parish and send a check for the entire amount – with ‘Typhoon Haiyan Recovery 2013’ in the memo portion of the check – directly to: Catholic Relief Services, P. O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21297-0303

Whatever you may choose to do, a million thanks for your help. Keep up your good prayer for these people and God bless you, always and all ways!

HELP FROM OUR PARISH

Cathedral Chapel would like to let you know the simple ways in which you could help with our relief efforts:

Give a donation to our special second collection this weekend, and all the weekends of Advent.

Food/Clothing/Needs Drive: In this season of giving thanks, we would like to inform you that in place of our monthly SVON, we will be sending all collected food, clothing and other needs to the victims of typhoon

Haiyan. Example of items that could be donated are: canned & other non-perishable food items; water; shoes, slippers and some clothing; blankets; toiletries, wet-wipes, disinfectants. You can drop your donations to the church or the parish office. Thank you for your charity and prayers. God bless.

A PARISH THAT WORKS...

Imagine the moment, with a choir singing the entrance song in the background, a parishioner enters the door of the church, where she hopes her faith to be renewed. She noticed the clean church, with all the things in place, and the church beautifully decorated. The pastor smiles and shakes her hand, saying “Hello and welcome.” The celebration of the Mass begins. The priest, ministers, choir, altar servers seem to all have rehearsed the whole celebration. The Mass ended and she was greeted with a smile and a copy of the bulletin before leaving the church. She marveled at how the Mass went so smoothly and felt thankful.

For any parish that works, it takes many people to produce this experience daily, and at each Sunday Mass. The pastor together with lay staff and volunteers, put in a lot of effort: planning, meeting, training, organizing, facilitating to bring these components together to produce a spiritual Mass celebration, or a successful parish or school event. However subtle the impact of management may seem for a given experience, they create lasting impressions. Everyone’s behavior then, makes a great impact on how someone feels about a church or a school or any organization for that matter.

In the coming issues of this bulletin, we will post articles or “did you know” tidbits about how a parish works. You may also send in questions or any suggestions of how we can better serve you, our dear parishioners by filling out our online form on our website at ww.cathedralchapel.org/ about_our_parish/contact_us. Thank you for your continued support of our church. God bless you.

Inspirations to live by….. It's easy to give up, but no ma er what the outcome is, if you do your best, you are always the winner.

Lord, may I truly realize that it is the way I par cipate in life that counts for me.
