M an continually try to improve on the many facets of nature, often ending up with retrogression rather than progression. Advances on some aspects are negated by set-backs in others. Thus, we ask: Isn’t nature already perfect? After all it is God’s creation. If it is perfect, then, how could we improve on it? One thing we believe, though, is that in raising game fowl, the way of nature doesn’t hurt. We are even convinced it is the better way. Hence, Masang Nagmamanok (MANA) Inc. and Roosterman E-Mag have been advocating for raising game fowl nature’s way. We also feel that responsible sabungeros, breeders and chicken raisers should contrib-ute to the protection of nature, environment and ecology. Hence this issue of Rooster-man is dedicated to such system of raising chicken— the way of nature. This issue features RB Sugbo’s Rooster Biotech and some new natural and herbal products now available for use when one is raising and fighting game fowl. This issue also features an application of Apple for sabungeros that is based on nature, the moon’s cycle. Also included is a decade-old study by RB Sugbo on the game fowl natu-ral biorhythm. We will also get to meet Ms. Sheryll Sampang, a lover of nature, business woman, and new addition to sabong sports and industry. Indeed Ms. Sheryll is bringing something beautiful to the sport.

Ms. Sheryll Sampang, managing director of 3Skatt trading Inc.,

joins the sabong world and introduces natural products for the

game fowl. Business woman, yes. But also she believes in the

power of nature to bring benefits to the game fowl.

Flashback. Sometime mid 2014, she went to Cebu to meet with

Rey Bajenting of RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology. And, their

desires met. A team was formed—3Skatt and RB Sugbo. They

started exploring possibilities of providing natural and herbal

products for the game fowl.

Now two avid advocates of natural raising join hands in provid-

ing the best of nature for the good of the game fowl.

Here’s Ms. Sheryll’s and what she has got to offer:

its synergistic combination of plant and herbs extracts to stimulate and optimize liver functions, protect the liver and kidney from different toxins from feeds and harmful chemicals from use of synthetic products for maintenance and conditioning, and also pro-tection from bacteria and viruses. Along with this, it improves absorption, assimila-tion and metabolism of nutrients. LIV-100 for game fowl is a proven effective, all- natural breeding and fighting enhancing tonic that improves key liver functions, pro-motes growth, provides better feed intake and nutrient metabolism, increases power and energy generation, enhances digestibil-ity, keeps the game fowl active and alert, transforms and clears toxins and acts as hepatoprotective, hepatostimulative, and hepatogenerative. Liver health is the key to achieving high and winning performance in game fowl. The product contains 100% medicinally 21 active herbs and completely natural and free from pathogenic microflora and toxic chemi-cals.

Summershield is a scientific blend of trial-

tested natural ingredients that effectively

fights stress through better adaptation thus restoring normal immune functions. The scientifically

proven active ingredients of Summershield are Adaptogenic, Immunomodulating, Free Radical

Scavenging, Antioxidant and Rejuvenating.

The product contains special herbs that help the game fowl adapt to stress and resist fatigue.

Adaptogens are a unique group of herbal ingredients used to improve the health of your game

fowl’s adrenal system, the system that’s in charge of managing the chicken’s response to stress.

They help strengthen their response to stress and enhance ability to cope with heat and cold and

fight fatigue – slowly and gently, without jolts or crashes. They are called adaptogens because of

their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the chicken’s specific needs. Though the

effects may initially be subtle and take time to make themselves felt, they are real and undeniable.

Summershield improves specific immune response resulting in optimum antibody production

post vaccination. It also increases non-specific immune response for overall protection against

various infectious agents. In addition, it has potent antioxidant action.

She got it. Ms. Sheryll also got the touch that

makes the game fowl feel good at her hands.

For hens, it improves hatchability, lowered egg rejection & better maternal antibody transfer and chick quality in breeders, reducing early chick mortality Summershield works by increasing body resistance against different bacterial and viral diseases, promotes better vaccination response, optimum feed utilization, growth and fighting performance, and prevents dehydration. Mintoresp is a complete all-natural oral solu-tion for respiratory distress in different respi-ratory diseases of bacterial & viral origin with-out relapse of symptoms. It is a natural solu-tion that helps take care of both primary & sec-ondary problems. For maintenance, Mintoresp is a co-therapy with antibiotics for prevention of production losses in CRD outbreaks. It helps in the pre-vention & treatment of coryza, bronchitis & fowl cholera, it minimizes secondary bacterial complications and provides relief from symp-toms associated with CRD like sniffing, rattling, sneezing, coughing & other signs of game fowl respiratory distress. Respiratory problems due to bacterial & viral infections in game fowl are unavoidable and it may happen at any stage of its life cycle. Antibiotics are the major remedy in bacterial disease, but they are not covering the secon-dary problems like respiratory distress, exces-sive cough & mucous building, loss of weight & low feed consumption. Thus, taking care of the respiratory health is a major concern with game fowl.

F or thousands of years man had been reap-ing the wonders of nature, including the

nutritional and healthful values of its various elements. At times, science interfered. Some-times for the better, often for the worse. This was also true in raising chickens, includ-ing game fowl. Again for thousands of years chickens were grown naturally. In the past century, however, was science supposed to have gained advances, but more importantly big business flourished. Big business saw to it that they swing the tide one way— their way. We were then taught by companies that chick-ens, including game fowl should be given this and that right from day one. There was some-thing not right with this. About a decade ago we at RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology toyed with the idea that natural and/or organic way is a good way of raising game fowl. During the first five years progress was somewhat slow, due to lack of readily available organic products. Thus, we had to formulate our own, but, quality was inconsis-tent. In 2011-2012, a company distributing prebiot-ics/probiotics products manufactured in Thai-land, tasked us to conduct a trial of its prod-ucts which were then new to the Philippine game fowl market. The products were good. And the arrangement enabled us to further our own program. Since then, we had augmented our studies and experimentations on natural and/or organic methods of raising game fowl. We called it Rooster Biotechnology.

During the period 2012 to the present, find-ings of our studies, and our recent successes in raising and fighting the game fowl reinforced, if not, altogether, confirmed our belief that natural and/or organic methods of raising the game fowl is indeed very feasible. Whereas, in the past, products tested and tried by RB Sugbo for its Rooster Biotech were mainly probiotics, at the time this was written a range of natural and herbal products of dif-ferent sort for different applications had been experimented and found effective. What is Rooster Biotech? This E-Book Raising Aces is actually about our Rooster Biotech method, a biodynamic, holistic approach to game fowl raising that takes into consideration the total well being of the chick-ens through natural methods. It also aims for synergy between the chickens, the plants and microorganism that will result in ecosystem ideal and conducive to the game fowl— in short good environment and chickens that are healthy and strong. Elements of rooster biotech: The elements of Rooster Biotech are pleasant ecosystem; proper game fowl raising manage-ment; and natural and/or organic practices. The purpose is good health all throughout from shell to pit. Any game fowl breeder as-pires for healthy stock as today’s healthy young chickens are tomorrow’s mighty warri-ors.

It is important to understand that biological farming is not new. Generations of farmers have successfully followed this farming method. Biological farming today is a system that uses nature and science. It takes advantage of natural proc-esses, which promote good healthy animals. It avoids exces-sive use of chemical, pesticides and antibiotics that can up-set the natural balance, which is the exact opposite of what is aimed at. Biological farming, when applied to game fowl, also makes economic sense. The input costs of antibiotics and chemi-cals are reduced as the healthier chickens are more disease resistant. Biological methods applied to game fowl raising is by no means the easiest method but the results are worth it. In raising game fowl, health is indeed wealth. Every experi-enced game fowl breeder and raiser will attest to good health from shell to pit being the very foundation of the game fowl’s performing capability of both breeders and fighters. Health is a key factor in spelling the difference between success and failure. There are two very important health related concerns. One is bio security and disease manage-ment. The other is maintaining the chickens’ general well-being throughout its life cycle. If these two concerns are managed effectively the performance of the game fowl will be greatly enhanced. RB Sugbo GT, being aware of this fact, has seen to it that its Rooster Biotech method addresses these concerns. In pursuit of the objective, RB Sugbo GT avails of the following as three of Rooster Biotech’s main supplements.—liver tonic, body cooling tonic and respiratory soothing tonic. Strategy for Optimum Performance (SOP) The three-pronged process of using natural liver tonic, natural body cooling tonic, and natural respiratory tonic is part of Rooster Biotechnology’s strategy of raising better game fowl. It is an-chored on the idea that the respective roles of the liver, the respiratory system and thermo-regulation system are not only interrelated but also are very important to the functioning of the game fowl and very susceptible to external factors. A fourth concern is the micro flora, but it is only usually during the very early stages that this could be a problem. Giving probiotics or humus products to days-old chicks may provide the chickens beneficial microflora, that otherwise, they could not get out of the sanitized conditions prevailing in the hatcheries and brooders. Once the chicks are let out in the brooding yard and then in the range area, no probiotic supple-mentation is much necessary as the range area, if lush and rich with beneficial micro organism, can provide all the prebiotics and probiotics the chickens need. However, providing probiotics is always advisable after every use of antibiotics. Read the entire E-book for free click here.

N utrition is one of the vital factors that determine game fowl performance. The others are Genetics, Environment,

and Training. Nutrition is further divided into regular nutri-tion (feeds/water) and supplementation or supplements. This short pamphlet deals on supplementation in general and foundation supplementation in particular.

The role of supplementation A supplement is something added to the diet, usually to make up for a nutritional deficiency. Gamecock supplementation, however, is more than that. Akin to human sports ergogenic aids, gamecock supplementation is designed to im-prove fighting performance. Game fowl conditioning consists of nutrition and exercise. Supplementation serves as the link that will fit nutrition to the requirements of exercise. Supplementation also acts as the gear that shifts from one stage of conditioning to another.

Availability of ready feeds and supplements in the market for gamecocks has made the task of conditioning, nowadays, simple and easy. Of course, not really that easy because one still has to understand the basics of nutrition, be able to decide intelligently what he wants for his roost-ers, and be constantly aware of the situation. After which, however, all one has to do is to find the right product in the market, instead of formulating and producing the stuff himself.

Classification of supplements by objectives/specific goals: Supplements may be classified many ways. One classification is by form, whether in cap-sule, pill, suspension, liquid, or powder. An-other is by route of administration, whether oral or injection or even transdermal. More importantly, supplements may be grouped by objectives or by their respective specific goals. Supplements have their respec-tive purposes. You should learn the various substances and the respective purpose or ef-fect.

In gamecock supplementation the identified objectives are the following: Foundation or general well being Muscle and tissue building Blood conditioning & Oxygen circulation Energy generation What could be a fifth classification would be hormone boosting supplements. Mostly these are performance enhancing drugs that are banned in human athletic competitions or in many cases in horse racing and pigeon racing. Because there is no such ban in cockfighting, hormone boosting supplements could be used on gamecocks. These supplements are aimed at increasing power, strength, speed, energy and stamina by altering the metabolic and hormo-nal processes of the body. These drugs do work, but it involves risk to the performance of the rooster considering the chicken’s delicate senses. Chickens are only sturdy when it comes to tolerance to pain, but they are very sensitive to mental stimuli. This the reason why stress management is vital to conditioning and point-ing the game fowl . Thus, products may be classified as for general well-being; for muscle and tissue builder; for blood conditioning; for oxygen circulation; and as energy booster. A product may serve several purposes. For example, vitamins and minerals are regarded as for general well being, but b complex vitamins and B12 also helps in blood conditioning, and oxygen circulation. The min-eral iron also aids in condtioning the blood, and thus also helps in oxygen circulation. Phospho-rus and magnesium are minerals and also aid in energy generation. Amino acids are muscle and tissue builders. But many amino acids are like-wise instrumental to energy production. Each of the purposes is as important as the others.

Foundation Supplements Foundation supplements are the most basic and important. They lay the foundation for the body to function efficiently enough to enable the rooster sustain strenuous activities and

also absorb nutrients from the more advanced supplements that are usually given in the course of raising chickens and during condi-tioning. Foundation supplements are designed to ensure that the rooster’s system is ready to absorb and utilize the nutrients necessary for optimum performance. Providing foundation supplements is the first step to proper and rais-ing and conditioning game fowl. Otherwise, all the special nutrients provided may just go to waste. Foundation supplementation will set the stage for the rooster’s body to absorb effi-ciently the nutrients for specific goals such as general well being, anabolism, blood condition-ing, oxygen circulation and energy boosting. Foundation supplements will increase nutri-ents bio availability, absorption and utilization. Every sound raising and conditioning program should begin with sound foundation supple-mentation. Proper foundation supplementation will prepare the roosters body for the better things to come. Without proper foundation sup-plementation the body may not absorb the nu-trients and other raising, conditioning and pointing aids. Unknown to many, foundation supplementation is a vital aspect in gamecocks as it set the stage for the development of the rooster’s physical fitness necessary for the fight. Usually foundation supplements are multi vitamins and minerals that address the rooster’s general well being or amino acids to build muscles and tissues. Most foundation supplements available in the market are of this kind-supplements that ad-dress only one or some of the specific concerns. Ideally, however, foundation supplements should be total and should address all the con-cerns. Foundation supplementation may con-sist of more than one supplement so that all the specific goals could be addressed, unless you use a supplement that, by itself, is a total foun-dation supplement. An example of a total foundation supplement for gamecock is liver tonic.

R afael Bazan is a champion breeder of Peruvian Navajeros, having won grand champi-onships in Peru twice. Last issue he started sharing readers his thought and experi-ences regarding the Peruvian Navajeros.

The following is his second article for Roosterman. Here he says it is not true that inbreeding is very seldom done in Peru. Most good Peruvian breeders inbred to maintain their bloodlines.

T he Peruvian is a breed that has been built over centuries which was intended for fighting with the knife. The characteristics of the Peruvian rooster such as its strength, size, and speed are not seen in other roosters of the world.

There have been many breeders that have formed a huge part in the bloodlines that exist today. To mention a few are Manuel Wong (Chino Chico), Fernando Graña, Abraham Wong, Manuel Bar-renechea, the Rizo Patron brothers, Mariano Ramos, Chucho Grimaldi, Jose Luis Perez among many others. The majority of these breeders were active from the 60’s to the 80’s and their breed-ing farms were in different parts of Lima. The bloodlines of these breeders can be found in many of the roosters bred today.

Today there are many names of popular breeders. There is not one I can say is especially good because they compete differently. The truth is that there are many good breeders that have more than 30 years in breeding and maintaining their own bloodlines. It is not true that in Peru inbreeding is not applied. The majority of prestigious breeders that I know maintain their phenotype and characteristics of fighting through inbreeding. Obviously, though, many refresh their lines with other lines but only a percentage until they see a positive effect or new crosses. Peruvian breeders basically they look for power and speed. As for the style of fighting whether it is more air, or lower on the ground, or more intelligence really depends on each breeder and the development of their own bloodline in regards to their likes. The majority of breeders put a rooster with a hen to evaluate each animal. Many times they are of the same family to continue the bloodline. I breed the same rooster to the same hen 3 times a week until she starts to incubate her eggs. I choose to breed individuals in this manner as to know exactly what roosters and hens are giving good results. I don’t like mixing the eggs of various hens. The majority of breeders usually hatch eggs the natural method and do not use incubators. Some-times the mother does not become broody and lay on her on eggs so they use smaller hens to aid in hatching. Each hen lays anywhere from 8 to 12 eggs. They are not always good at hatching out their eggs due to their large size. There are some breeders who are known for their large sized hens and roosters. In these cases, a smaller hen is used to hatch out the eggs or an incubator. There are different companies that produce feed balanced from chicks until adulthood. A large percentage of breeders use as a base diet for roosters in training: corn, wheat, vitamins, minerals, and a probiotic supplement. An adult rooster usually is given 120 grams daily of feed as well as a little fresh alfalfa. A good diet should contain 16% protein with a good level of carbohydrates. During the growth stages they are normally left free to roam de-pending on space each breeder has. There are breeders that have larger properties and others that have less space and breed in their yards or small pens. At around 6 or 7 months of age, they are en-closed in a cage of 1 square meter. This is for two reasons: space and tradition of what we have seen from generation to generation. I have a few breeding pens 1.50 meters long and 1.20 meters wide that I put the rooster with the hen. In this same pen, the eggs are hatched and around 2 months later after being banded or marked, the chickens is move to a larger pen approximately 5 meters long by 5 meters wide. The chickens stay there for around 2 months and then are moved to an even larger pen of around 600 meters squared. Generally every year around 200 chickens (male and fe-male) are hatched out. Right around 6 or 7 months of age, the males are removed and put in cages of 1.20 meters long by 1 meter wide. (More on the Peruvian next issue) A typical Peruvian rooster.

E mmanuel de la Torre is known in Cebu music circle as a com-poser and bass guitarist. To sabungeros he is regarded as

one of Cebu’s finest knife designers. He is the man behind the Au-gust Moon knife designs. His latest coup, however, is IT related. He managed to put on Ap-ple Apps store an application for sabungeros—the first applica-tion for sabungeros to penetrate Apple. The application, Lucky Chicken is designed to guide sabungeros to pick the likely winners on a certain day. The concept is based on the moon cycle. If effective, then nature must have his way of picking winners too. We all knew that sabungeros of the old times consulted the phases of the moon whenever they fought their roosters. Even today many sabungeros still practise moonscope in fighting their roosters or in betting travesia. Our sabong forefathers may not have known the reason, but the fact that they practised it for so long a time, would mean that somehow they had observed that it worked. Recently, studies showed that indeed the moon cycle had effects on life on earth including human and animal behavior. Well, if that’s the case then there must be corresponding effects on the game fowl’s fighting per-formance. About a decade ago, RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology conducted a study on the biorhythm of game fowl performance. This study when released created some stir. It was later translated and pub-lished in Spanish and Vietnamese. The RB Sugbo study confirmed that If left alone, under normal conditions, game fowls have natural bio rhythm that guides their individual fighting performances. After 24 sparring sessions the chart showed a clear correlation between the performances of cer-tain birds with that of the lunar cycle. It showed that fowls' performances are guided by a cycle of four phases consisting of 7 days each. Coincidence or whatever, the lunar cycle is also of 4 phases of 7 days each. Now, in a mixture of the old and the new, a Filipino, Dela Torre, has managed to create an applica-tion that will suppose to guide sabungeros on what type of roosters will most likely win on a given day based on the lunar cycle. When you open the Lucky Chicken you will be greeted with a pleasant familiar crow of the fighting rooster. Then you view several icons of different types of roosters. When you click any of the icons you will be able to see its lucky day. The application is complete with a memo page and calculator for computing and recording your progress. Fortunate are the Apple user sabungeros as they can readily download said applications “Lucky Chicken” to their gadgets for only 5.99US$.

The gamefowl has natural biorhythm

Study

This study was conducted between December 2004 and March 2005. It was published in sabong.net on April 24, 2005. It triggered a very interesting discussion. The post itself was translated in Spanish and publish in Spanish gamefowl literature.

If left alone, under normal condi-tions, gamefowl have natural bio

rhythm that guides their individual fighting performances. This was confirmed by an experiment we have conducted. For three months, from December, 2004 to early March, 2005, RB SugboGamefowl Technology conducted a study involving 20 fowl picked at random. They were of different bloodlines and crosses and some were bullstags others were cocks. The birds were sparred every four days and their respective performances were charted. After 24 sparring sessions the chart showed a clear correlation between the performance of cer-tain birds with that of the lunar cycle. It showed that fowls' performances are guided by a cycle of four phases consisting of 7 days each. Coincidence or whatever, the lunar cycle is also of 4 phases of 7 days each. However, contrary to superstitious belief, there was no correlation between particular plumage or leg color with any particular phase of the lunar cycle. For example some yellow legged fowl fought well on first quarters while others fought well during other phases of the moon. This was also true to the green leggeds, the greys and the black plum-age. Subsequent experiments have been and will be conducted to establish the extent of the moon's

influence on gamebirds and whether this natural bio rhythm could be altered to enable us to time

the best performance for as scheduled day of fight.

Organic Management System

The organic management system us aimed to develop a harmonious relationship between land and animals, and respect for their physiological and behavioral needs. This can be achieved by a combination of providing quality organically-grown feeds and fodder, appropriate stocking rates, animal husbandry systems appropriate to behavioral needs, and animal management practices that seek to promote health and prevent diseases. The Philippine native chickens and their upgrades, whether raised under scavenge-based system or free-range system can very well be regarded as organically produced. They are adapated to lo-cal conditions and utilize traditional feeds (succulent leaves, buds, inflorescence, insects, earth-worms, grains and kitchen discards) coming fromthe farms itself. No synthetic drugs are given ex-cept vaccines.

Potential Users

The raising of organic native chicken can be integrated with other crops and livestock production systems. This technology is very appropriate for farmers with adequate range area for the produc-tion of native chicken. Organic native chicken production could be done in various agro-ecosystem which include but not limited to orchards, grasslands, upland and hillyland. The meat and eggs should be sold as organic food and should command a premium price compared to the same prod-ucts coming from commercial exotic chickens.

Simple Cost and Benefit Analysis

The production cost for raising the Philip-pine native chicken is vey minimal. Chick-ens are allowed to wander freely and scav-enge for all or most of their food. Under free-range system, almost 75% of their requirements are obtained from the range. Feed supplements can be in the form of grains (rice, corn) chopped coconut meat or kitchen discards. Market weight is between 0.8 to 1.3 kg per bird. Market age is between 12 weeks up to 18 weeks old. Price per live is between PhP 80 to PhP 200. Eggs which are about 40 to 45 grams (small) sell between PhP 5 to PhP 6 per piece. Most are paid in premium price because of their unique wuality attributes including distinct flavor, leanness, texture and pigmentation. Eggs are likewise valued because of the intense yellow pigmentation of the yolk.

Why is this deadly? First because this usually hap-pens during the opening stage of the fight when the roosters are still fresh, strong and pow-erful and the knives are still very sharp. Know the other reasons why this fighting maneuver of a game fowl is so deadly. View video Click here.

The Horizontal intercept is best executed split second be-fore the opponent lands or split second after it lands. In both cases the opponent is not prepared or in the position to either strike back or evade the punch. This is a deadly maneuver if executed by a good cutting cock like the one on the video.
