VILLAGER BEATnew autobiography, “Shoot-ing Stars.”

It was quite an experi-ence! People began liningup the night before his 7p.m. appearance time. Linessnaked around the store, upand down book aisles andthen outside as hopeful fanswaited patiently.

Media was cordonedoff about 10 feet fromLeBron’s signing table. Most of us were sitting onthe floor by the time LeBronand his entourage arrived. We were advised thatLeBron would take no ques-tions. “TV people, pleaseput your microphones away.LeBron will be available forvideo and photos only andthen begin his book sign-ing.”

A ripple of excitementswept through Borders asmen with the soon-to-be-autographed books rolledthem in on dollies.

A few moments later,LeBron appeared. He heldup a copy of his book for

maybe 20 seconds and thenturned to the table. The linebegan to move and LeBronetched a carefully inscribedautograph inside each cover.

After about 10 minutes, media was asked to leave.“That’s it, folks. Thankyou.”

If you were a photog-rapher and didn’t get theshot, well, it was a little likegoing for a three-pointer atthe buzzer!

We liked seeingLeBron a lot, though! Sure,he is as big a name as theycome in sports these days.So you wonder, off thecourt, what is he like? Thisbook-signing was about asclose as we figure we’ll everget to meeting LeBron inperson. But what is he likeup close and away from thecompetitive arena we seehim in professionally?

Well, here’s our take.Don’t laugh. He has kind eyes. And he took the time to

look every kid who came tothe table in the eye. Before

we went, we wondered ifLeBron would be one ofthose bigger-than-life ath-letes with stars in his eyes.

No way.Up close and in person,

LeBron James comes acrossas a down-to-earth guy withkind eyes who just happensto also be a superstar.

THE REST OF THESTORY: “And now,” asPaul Harvey used to say,“The rest of the story…..”

As all turned to walkout of media central at theLeBron book-signing atBorder’s, the REAL photo-opportunity of the day ap-peared!

It was the dozens anddozens of people who werestraining over the top ofbook racks, standing on tip-toes and peering around pil-lars to catch a glimpse of theCavs superstar. Most hadcell phone cameras beamedhis way and all were look-ing for any little bit ofmemorabilia they couldgrab from the appearance.

Quite a sight ! One wewon’t soon forget. Checkout today’s Crocker ParkPress or visitTheVillagerNewspaper.com

SPEAKING OFSPORTS: What a yearfor the Lake Erie Crush-ers! Who knew, on thatchilly afternoon last May,that the Crushers of theFrontier Baseball Leaguewould have surpassed theaccomplishments of ourheartbreakers, the Indi-ans and Browns this sea-son! When the Crushers

threw out that first pitch atAvon’s great All-Pro FreightStadium last spring, no oneguessed that they wouldhave picked the perfect sea-son to connect with the com-munity. $6 seats, a leaguechampionship, down yearsfor the Indians and Browns. It all spelled good things forthe Crushers.

They used their inaugu-ral campaign for some realcommunity-level connectiv-ity. Many were pleased toget to know Josh Fiaola,Crusher pitcher who lived atThe Belvedere of Westlake. He was virtually adopted asa grandson by the residentsof the senior living apart-ment complex. His teammade the playoffs, battledback from a 2-0 deficit inthe championship series andthen rallied to win it all.

What a year!84-year old Meta Den-

nis, who has been living atThe Belverdere for fouryears, put it best when shesaid Faiola’s arrival was themost exciting thing to hap-pen since a good Elvis im-personator showed up!

Well, Josh may neverbe as big as Elvis or LeBronJames, but his presence atThe Belvedere this year didas much for the communityas James’s book-signing atCrocker Park! Congratula-tions on a great year!

WHEN YOU GO TOTHE DOCTOR, does thethought ever cross yourmind that he might feelworse than you do?

We never do. We justworry about our own prob-lems…..

Last Sunday, we wereprivileged to see famedFaith Healer and TV evan-gelist Richard Roberts inWestlake.

That is part of the funof journalism. One day youcan be taking pictures ofLeBron James, and a fewdays later Richard Rob-erts….

Roberts was in town toconduct healing services at

THE

VILLAGER

Welcome to fall, it is finallyupon us and you can just barely seethe leaves on the trees about tochange color. It is among us – oneof our most beautiful seasons. Getout there and enjoy this wonderfulfall time that we always have.

Many of you may have missedan interesting news item that ap-peared a couple of weeks ago. Thesoap opera, The Guiding Light, hadfinally ended after being on televi-sion for 72 years! That really is an amazing statistic whenyou think about it. There is something to be said aboutlongevity and experience. Certainly The Guiding Light hadit for a very long time. Unfortunately, people and societyhave changed and there weren’t so many stay-at-home house-wives any more that have the time to watch soap operas.

The Guiding Light....In reflecting on what

we have come to realize isthat we at The HealthySmile has been around foralmost 35 years. Like I said, there is something to be saidfor longevity and experi-ence. We have been proudto have offered dental ser-vices to literally thousandsof patients over these years. We have tried to changewith the times. As new tech-nology and new techniqueshave come to dentistry, weincorporate much of thatinto our office to providepatients with the best care

that we can provide. In thetime frame of the past 35years, dentistry has becomemuch more minimally inva-sive, with faster, easier, andbetter techniques to insuremaximum comfort in theminimal amount of time.

Call us today at 440-892-1810 if you would likea free consultation for anyof your dental needs. We,here at The Healthy Smile, are here to make you smile.

Church on the Rise. He isthe son of Oral Roberts andpresently serves as Presi-dent Emeritus for Oral Rob-erts University. He hosts areligious television show,The Place for Miracles:Your Hour of Healing. It ison our local cable TV chan-nels. He has ministered toliterally hundreds of thou-sands of people worldwide.

Seeing him in personwas fascinating. He touchespeople and something hap-pens.

We looked RichardRoberts up on the Internetlater that day. Not only doeshe have a huge healing min-istry, he has scars, too. Justbecause he is a healerdoesn’t make him immunefrom pain.

He didn’t plan to be anevangelist like his dad. Hewanted to be a singer. Hewent to Las Vegas. He gotgood at golf. He was di-vorced. He was remarried. He lost a child. He was scan-dalized by alleged financialmisappropriations.

As a young man, he suf-fered from serious gas-trointestinal illness. “In re-sponse to this sickness,” it

is reported, “Roberts prayedto God saying ‘God, ifyou’ll heal me, I’ll serveyou.’

“I felt the power of Godgo through my body thatnight on the bed,” he said. The next day doctors couldfind nothing wrong with himbecause he had been mi-raculously healed. He soonre-joined Oral Roberts Min-istries.

In 1987, Richard’s con-troversial claim to have seenGod raise a child from thedead while his father waspraying for the individualwas reported by TimeMagazine.

Some people don’t be-lieve him. But, after seeinghim personally, there is cer-tainly no reason to not be-lieve him! After all, believ-ing in and hoping formiracles is one of thosethings that makes the worldgo around!

Roberts also sayspeople don’t have to rely onhim for healing. He sayspeople can pray for one an-other and heal each otherthat way. Just the waypeople pray for each otherat every church.

Not once did he claimto have an exclusive onhealing powers. He wasmore than willing to share. He encouraged people to dojust that.

We thank him for thatmessage.

And now that we’veread a little about his ownlife, we realize just becauseRoberts is a healer, he isn’timmune from pain anymorethan LeBron James is guar-anteed to never miss a freethrow!

He’s just out there do-ing what he is supposed todo and trying to be the besthe can at it.

We’re glad he prays foreverybody who asks! We’regoing to pray for him, too!

plays, formal appointments for shopping, brass-trimmed revolving doors and ubiquitous elegance.Simple as that!

“The shiny marble floor, the high ceilings, andthe banks of elevators that whisked patrons up anddown Higbee’s 12 floors were for me the stuff ofdreamland,” writes Hunter Morrison in “The SilverGrille,” a book graciously placed at every “Moonlightin the City” table setting at Lutheran Hospital’sfundraiser hosted at The Silver Grille Sept. 19.

The Silver Grille was known, back in the dayswhen you wouldn’t think of wearing blue jeans down-town, as a Tea Room. Portions were graciously smallerbut artistically presented for refined dining. Nothingsupersized in those days of self-moderation and re-serve! “Convention had it that middle class womenate less, ate more slowly and ate foods that were re-fined,” writes Morrison.

The Silver Grille today captures the spirit of theCleveland glory years. You can still enjoy a walk alongthe red carpet, appreciate the wood overlays in the el-evators and enjoy the ambiance of gracious living.

It was a day when afternoon tea held allure. TheHigbee-special sandwich consisted of Swiss cheese,Canadian bacon, white meat of turkey Russian dress-ing and garnish of tomato and sliced egg all for $1!

Hot entrees? Bet it’s been a while since you’veseen a menu that offered Welsh Rarebit on Melba Toastwith Almonds, or Scrambled Eggs and Cheese withshoestring potatoes and sliced tomatoes on a roll! Fordessert, fare called for things like Coconut Ice CreamBall with Butterscotch Sauce.

Yes, it was Art Deco styling and Art Deco diningat its best. But there were casual elements, too, likethe Frosty Bar in the Higbee’s Basement Store and theChildren’s Party Luncheon for 85 cents that was servedon little dishes.

“First you set your table from the little sideboard, then you eat – creamed chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh

Kitchen Windowpoem by David Scullin

I look attentively out my kitchen window as the cher-ished ones, on a quest for knowledge, with back packsnicknamed imagination and truth...march off.

The giant sunflowers, with large bright yellow/gold cy-clops stare at them as the kids get smaller down thedriveway.

The huge flowers are expectantly awaiting the longedfor ball of light and warmth so as to track its path, acrossthe early fall sky, like so many yellow satellite dishes.

The morning dishes, with oatmeal clinging, are nestedunder the counter anticipating there ablution.

Another window beckons me with the soft chatter ofRegis and Kelly and the promise of now quiet secondcup.
