AT THE Seattle World's Fair, Gherman S . Titov, the Russia nastronaut who orbited the earth seventeen times, declare d

that he had seen nothing of God or of the angels out there beyon dthe earth's atmosphere . From this he concluded that there is noGod, and that angels are nonexistent. According to Titov, manhimself alone is responsible for his accomplishments, that actual-ly there is no higher intelligence than the human anywhere i nthe universe.

We doubt if many have taken Titov's viewpoint seriously, an dyet it is this belief, or lack of belief, that is now spreadin gthroughout the earth as never before . Just how sound is thissort of unreasoning? Does the fact that Titov did not see Godwhen he was thrust into orbit beyond the earth's atmospher eprove that there is no God, and that all the marvelous things inthe universe have been produced by human wisdom and ability ?

An illustration might help . Let us imagine a group of tiny dee psea creatures living on the floor of the ocean, several miles belo wthe surface of the water. Let us suppose that in some unknow nmanner the information reached these tiny creatures that farabove them, and beyond the water in which they lived, there wa sa mighty creature called man . Man, they heard, could do marvel-ous things . In fact, as these tiny sea creatures had heard thereport, there was almost nothing that man could not do .

Many of these tiny sea creatures were inclined to believe thi sreport concerning the existence of man up above them in th egreat unknown. But some were skeptical, and together these d ecided to investigate . So some of the stronger and more intelligentof them conceived the idea of lifting one of their fellows as hig has they could above the floor of the sea so he could get a bette r

look. After much planning and hard work they finally succeede din lifting one of their number a whole eighth of an inch from th efloor of the sea. While they held this tiny creature at this dizzyheight to them, he focused a searching gaze toward the surfac eof the ocean but could see nothing ; and when he returned to thefloor of the ocean he promptly announced that the idea of ma nexisting out beyond the ocean was false .

This illustration is, of course, crude and inaccurate, for thetiny deep sea "astronaut" was lifted much too high above th efloor of the ocean to be a reasonable comparison with Titov' sposition in outer space, even though that was miles beyond th eearth's denser atmosphere ; for we must judge his position inrelation to the entire universe, which, the more we consider it ,appears almost infinite . Even our most brilliant scientists haveno definite idea as to the size of God's great universe . By the aidof the latest telescope at Palomar, California, it has been possibleto photograph distant stars, the light of which required 2,000million years to reach the earth . Light travels approximately186,000 miles a second . So if we multiply the number of second sin 2,000 million years by 186,000 we would know only approx-imately how far away those distant stars are .

A comparison here might help . The moon is our nearest heavenly body, and light reaches the earth from the moon in one an done-quarter seconds. From the sun it takes eight minutes . Itrequires four years for light to reach the earth from our neares tstar neighbor; and, as we have seen, 2,000 million years fro mheavenly bodies far out yonder which have been photographedat Palomar. Actually, Titov did not get as good a look at God' sgreat universe as he seems to have assumed. Certainly he couldhardly say that he had explored the whole universe, yet faile dto find God . David expressed the correct thought when he wrote ,"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God."—Ps . 14 : 1

for beauty. But none of these had been created by man. Theywere God's creation . Man was given the necessary wisdom to usethe created things of God with which he was surrounded, bu thas not been able himself to create a living thing, except throug hGod-given procreation .. Throughout the ages man made little progress in discoverin gthe possible uses of the things which God had created for him .It is in these "last days," "the time of the end," that God has, a sit were, lifted the curtain, and permitted the human mind t ounderstand a little more of the potentials of creation . These dis-coveries are now associated with such words as electricity, elec-tronics, atoms, automation, and so forth . But man has not createdthese; he has merely discovered certain limited uses of them .

The discovery of some of the secrets of God's creation has, onthe one hand, enriched human life, and on the other, has fille dthe world with fear . From the standpoint of human selfishnes sthese fears are well-grounded ; for without doubt, man's inhuman-ity to man would, with the aid of the powerful methods o fdestruction now available, lead to virtual destruction of th ehuman race .

However, we know from the promises of the Bible that ther ewill be divine intervention in the affairs of men in time to pre -vent this horrible holocaust . We know that the kingdom of Christwill take control of mankind, and through its agencies peace an dgood will shall be established, and that then all the marvelou sdiscoveries and inventions of the present, and others yet to come ,will be used for the good of the people. In this we rejoice !

God Is invisible

TITOV'S remark that he did not see God was based on a falseconception of God . The great God of all creation is so far superiorto man that of necessity he is invisible to human eyes . "No manhath seen God at any time," the Scriptures declare . (Col . 1 :15 ;I Tim. 1 :17; Heb. 11 :27; John 1 :18) The idea that God is like a nold man with a beard is not taught in the Bible, and it limitsone's conception of his greatness thus to think of him .

Moses was a very devout servant of God, and was anxious tosee his glory . In response to this desire God said to Moses : "I wil l

make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim thename of the Lord before thee : and will be gracious to whom Iwill be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy .Thou canst not see my face : for there shall no man see me, andlive . . . . Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt standupon a rock : and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by ,that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee wit hmy hand while I pass by : and I will take away mine hand, andthou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen ."—Exod. 33:19-23

In this statement by the Lord to Moses we have an interestinguse of pictorial language . It is the great God and Creator of theuniverse communicating to a very limited, finite mind . Moses 'concept of an intelligent being would of necessity be limited tothe only intelligent being he knew, which was man . So, to accom-modate Moses' limitations God speaks of his own "face," an d"hand," and "back parts ." But while God spoke to Moses on hisown level, there is nothing in what he said to give us the slightestconception of his appearance .

We could perhaps think of the "key" to this remarkable state-ment of God to Moses as being the assertion, "I will make all mygoodness pass before thee ." Actually, it is the "goodness " ofthe Lord that reveals him to us in the sense that we are able t o"see" or understand some of the wonderful aspects of his char-acter . Because of our limited understanding, some of the thingswhich the Lord causes to pass before us may not seem good . Takethe case of Job . The calamities which God permitted to comeupon him seemed evil, yet they helped to work out for Job awonderful blessing, so that at the end he could say, "I have heardof thee by the hearing of the ear : but now mine eye seeth thee . "—Job 42 : 5

In addressing his people here on earth the great Creator refer sto his "eyes," his "ears," his "hands," his "feet," and so forth.These expressions are all used symbolically, and they help us t ograsp the Creator's loving care for us . His "ears" are always ope nto our cries. He supports us with the "arm" of his strength, andholds us in the hollow of his "hand ." In Psalm 91 :4 we are in-formed that the Lord will cover us with his "feathers," and tha tunder his "wings" we can trust . This does not mean that th e

Creator has feathers and wings, but how sweet and comfortin gis the assurance of protection thus conveyed to us !

God's Attribute sTHE Bible refers to many gracious qualities of the Creator' s

character, such as his mercy, patience, and so forth ; and four ofhis cardinal attributes are particularly stressed . These are hiswisdom, justice, love, and power. "God is love," the Bible tellsus. (I John 4 :8, 16) God loves the sin-cursed and dying race o fmankind. He loves his fallen human creatures so much that hesent his beloved Son Christ Jesus to die for them .—John 3 :16

God is also just. We read concerning him, "Justice and judg-ment are the habitation [margin, or, establishment] of thy throne :mercy and truth shall go before thy face ." (Ps. 89:14) While Go dis just, he is also merciful ; and his mercy and love provided re-demption from sin through Jesus; so these attributes of theCreator's character are harmonious in their action .

Gad is infinitely wise. Wisdom is symbolized in the Bible b ylight, and we read, "God is light, and in him is no darkness atall." (I John 1 :5) The psalmist used a wonderful illustration o fthe Creator's wisdom and power. He wrote, "He telleth the num-ber of the stars ; he calleth them all by their names . Great is ourLord, and of great power : his understanding is infinite ."—Ps. 147:4, 5

The psalmist further wrote concerning God as one "Who cov-ereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth ,who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains . He giveth to thebeast his food, and to the young ravens which cry . He delightethnot in the strength of the horse : he taketh not pleasure in thelegs of a man. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him ,in those that hope in his mercy ."—Ps . 147:8-11

The Bible speaks of the Creator as being "almighty ." Indeed ,this is one of the names given to him in the Bible . Psalm 91 : 1reads, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most Hig hshall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." This promise i sof particular value to those who have faith in God and who havededicated themselves to his service, for it assures them that th eOne whom they serve is all-powerful, and therefore that nothingcan interfere with the accomplishment of his purposes .

Yes, our God is a great God! His justice is true, his love abound-ing. His wisdom is infinite, and his power unlimited. These fourcardinal attributes of God's character combine to make up hi sglory; and in this glory of God's character we can truly rejoice .This is what the true and living God of the Bible is, and what h emeans to us. The Bible does not attempt to explain what helooks like, for this would be beyond the comprehension of ou rfinite minds .

The Bible does say that "God is a Spirit," and to this is addedthat those who worship him should worship him in spirit and i ntruth . (John 4:25) Yes, God is a Spirit, a spirit being, high abov eall his creatures in heaven and in earth. In our minds and heartswe can praise and worship him, not because we see him, or se ea humanly conceived image of him, but because we have learne dthrough the Bible many wonderful and glorious things concern-ing him .

Speaking to the Athenians on Mars' Hill Paul said concerningthe true and living God of the Bible that he "made the world an dall things therein ." And, "seeing that he is Lord of heaven andearth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands ; neither is wor-shiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seein gthat he giveth to all, life, and breath, and all things; and hathmade of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face o fthe earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, an dthe bounds of their habitation ; that they should seek the Lord, i fhaply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be notfar from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, and haveour being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For w eare also his offspring."—Acts 17:24-28

Yes, the true God of the Bible gives breath and life and allthings to his creatures . In him we live, and move, and exist . Howtrue! Our food is of his provision, and our clothing . When manin his foolishness attempts to travel through outer space, per-haps even to the moon or Mars, he cannot get off the earth apartfrom using the material things which God has created . Man im-agines that he is clever because he has found new ways to us ethe created things of God, and can harness some of the pent upenergy hitherto unknown to humans. Man has learned how to

smash an atom but he cannot make one, nor is he able to creat elife, even in its lowest forms .

THE people of all nations are continually surrounded wit hblessings which God has provided. These are shared alike bybelievers and unbelievers ; by the reverent and the irreverent ;by the meek and the proud ; yes, even by those who blasphem ethe name of the Lord, and insist that he does not exist at al lbecause they cannot find him in outer space . To us, the very fac tthat God is so patient with those who thus make light of himadds lustre to his character, and inspires us the more to lov eand serve him.

But to his servants God has revealed the mysteries of hi sgreat plan of the ages, the glorious provision he has made fo renlightening all mankind with a knowledge of his glory, an dgiving to them an opportunity based on knowledge to turn to hi min obedience and live . When God created our first parents an dplaced them in the Garden of Eden, he gave them an opportunityto obey him and live . They chose to disobey, and the death pen-alty was pronounced against them, and the reign of sin and deathbegan. It was God's justice that condemned man to death .

But God still loved his human creatures, and provided re-demption for them through the death of Jesus, who gave hishumanity in death, that in God's due time the penalty of deat hentered against Adam and the race might be set aside . (John 6:51 ;Heb. 2:8) God's wisdom saw that in this way the human race coul dgain a valuable experience with sin and its penalty death, an dthat this would help to teach the people the importance of obey-ing divine law.—Rom. 7:13

God's power makes the outworking of this plan of redemptionpossible, for he knew that he could allow the whole human rac eto fall asleep in death, and in his own due time restore them tolife. Yes, the great God who created life in the first place isabundantly able to restore life, and will restore the whole deadworld of mankind to life during the thousand years of Christ' skingdom .

the outworking of his plan of redemption, for it was his powe rthat raised Jesus Christ from the dead and set him at his ow nright hand in heavenly glory. (Acts 2:24, 32; I Cor . 6 :14) God' slove and power have overshadowed the lives of the followers o fJesus, giving them strength in their every time of need . At thisend of the age that same almighty power raises these from th edead, and exalts them with Jesus to live and reign with him inhis kingdom, that kingdom through which the whole world o fmankind will be enlightened and given an opportunty to obe ydivine law and live forever.

These are but a few brief references to the main outline o fGod's great plan of the ages for the blessing of all the families ofthe earth to show how his character is revealed in what he ha splanned to do for the sin-cursed and dying race . Truly he is agreat God, and all the people will come to know this when th eknowledge of his glory fills the whole earth, as the Bible assure sus will be the case .

Many today are able to trace the handiwork of God in th ebeautiful things of nature. In addition to this, others have theirfaith in his existence confirmed by the wonderful manner i nwhich he has revealed himself in his Word . And then, whe nChrist's kingdom is fully established and operative for the bless-ing of the people, all will find God, not by searching throug houter space, but in the marvelous things the kingdom will ac-complish for them, including the resurrection of the dead .

In ancient times God ruled over his people from Mount Zionin Jerusalem, so the rulership of Christ, during his thousand-yea rkingdom, is spoken of in the promises of the Bible as a mountain ."In this mountain," we are told, "shall the Lord of hosts makeunto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees ,of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined . .And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the coverin gcast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations .He will swallow up death in victory ; and the Lord God will wipeaway tears from off all faces ; and the rebuke of his people shallhe take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it .And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God ; we havewaited for him, and he will save us : this is the Lord ; we have

waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation ."—Isa. 25 :6- 9

We are glad that the "veil" that is now over the faces of th epeople, and is hindering them from seeing God, will be removed .We are glad that when this takes place, and the blessings of th ekingdom flow out to the people, they will recognize and acknowl-edge God, and will rejoice in his love. The Bible says that the nall will serve God with "one consent ." (Zeph . 3 :9) Meanwhile, le tus give thanks to our God for his patience and mercy towardthose who cannot now see him, and for the loving provision h ehas made for their enlightenment in his own due time .

May we not only give thanks to God for his love, but may w econtinue to sing his praises by witnessing his truth to all w ecan reach and who will give heed to his Word . While many dis-believe and doubt, and some blaspheme, may we, in reverenc eand godly zeal, continue to show forth his praises, his virtues ,by making known the truths of his divine plan of the ages, thos ekingdom truths which Jesus described as "this Gospel of thekingdom." (I Pet . 2 :9; Matt . 4 :23 ; 24 :14) This is our mission. Maywe be faithful in it !

Lesson XV 6

The Prophet Jona h

TT HE Prophet Jonah was the sonof Amittai, of Gath-hepher in

Israel.' He is brought prominentlyto our attention in the Bible i nconnection with his being swal-lowed by "a great fish," and threedays later being cast up on theshore alive and able to tell abouthis experience . '

God had commissioned Jona hto travel to Nineveh, in Assyria ,"that great city, and cry againstit ." Jonah decided not to obey theLord, but to go to Tarshish in-stead . He first went to Joppa, aseaport in Israel, and there se-cured passage by ship to Tarshish .

But God did not propose to al-low Jonah to get away from himin this manner, and caused astrong wind, a veritable tempest ,to whip up the sea and threate nthe destruction of the ship o nwhich Jonah was sailing. 3

The sailors became fearful, an dbegan praying to their variou sgods for protection . To help savethe ship from destruction theycast much of its cargo into thesea. But the storm did not sub-side .

Meanwhile Jonah was fastasleep in the hold of the ship.When discovered, the captain o fthe ship called upon him to pra yto his God, apparently recogniz-ing that the gods of the othermen were not able to save th eship. "

Then the men on the shi pagreed to cast lots to see if i tcould be determined which onewas responsible for the calamitywhich had befallen them . The lo tfell on Jonah . Then they ques-tioned Jonah, and learned that hewas a Hebrew, and that he serve dthe God of the Hebrews, "whic hbath made the sea and the dryland ." 5

Seemingly the sailors h a dlearned from Jonah that he wasfleeing from the presence of God ,and they concluded that his pres-ence on board the ship was th ecause of the storm, that Jonah'sGod was thereby punishing him .Apparently Jonah agreed withthis conclusion and he asked th esailors to throw him overboardinto the sea, which, after som e

hesitation, they did ; and imme-diately the storm subsided . °

But Jonah was not destroye din the sea, for the Lord had pre -pared a great fish to swallow him ,and his life was preserved in thisfish for three days .' Then Jonahprayed to the Lord . He explainedthat he had cried unto the Lor dfrom "the belly of hell ." In thi saccount the Hebrew word that i stranslated "hell" is sheol, whichis the word used in the Old Testa-ment to describe the state o fdeath. Jonah used the word in anaccommodated sense . He was notactually dead ; but had it not beenfor the deliverance wrought bythe Lord he would have died .

While the story of Jonah andthe "great fish"—referred to inthe New Testament as a "whale "—is difficult for the human mindto grasp and believe, it is authen-ticated by Jesus, so we accept itwithout question. Jesus, in fact ,drew a very important lessonfrom the experience of Jonah i nthe stomach of the "great fish ." 8In the New Testament Jonah i sreferred to as Jonas .

The scribes and Pharisees o fJesus' day asked for a sign thathe was the Messiah . In replyJesus said that no sign would begiven them except "the sign o fthe prophet Jonas ." 9 Then Jesusexplained that as Jonas was threedays in the belly of the whale s othe Son of Man would be in theheart of the earth three days .

The "sign of t h e prophe tJonas," then, which was given tothe generation of Jesus' day, wasthe death and resurrection ofJesus Christ from the dead . Thu sthe Lord used the harrowing ex-perience of Jonah to teach a veryimportant lesson concerning theresurrection; a lesson, however,which few of the people of Jesus'day, or since, have really appre-ciated or believed .

It requires faith in the relia-bility of the Bible as the Wordof God to believe the story o fJonah and the "great fish," buteven greater faith to believe thatJesus was raised from the dead.But those who are able to believ ein the resurrection of Jesus havea firm foundation for the glorioushope that in God's due time allthe dead will be restored to life . 7 O

SOME time later, after Jona hhad had time to recuperate fromhis harrowing experience in at-tempting to flee from the pres-ence of the Lord, he was againsent to Nineveh. This time heobeyed." Arriving in the city,which was the capital of Assyria ,and a considerable distance fro mhis home, Jonah proclaimed th emessage which the Lord hadgiven him to deliver. He told th epeople of Nineveh that their cit ywould be destroyed in fort ydays .' 2

God's prophet had delivered t othem. They repented, and as asign of their sincerity, proclaimeda fast and put on sackcloth . Eventhe king, when he learned of th eattitude of the people, joinedwith them, and made an officialproclamation that the peopl eshould all join in the fast and do ntheir sackcloth garments. Thehope of the king and the peopl ewas that God would turn awayfrom his purpose to destroy themand their city .' 3

This was an unusual reaction tothe preaching of an unknow nprophet, who served a God whowas not ordinarily recognized b ythe people of Nineveh . However,it seems that the Ninevites wereworshipers of a fish god, whichthey supposed to be a great se amonster . It is probable that th enews of what had previously hap-pened to the Prophet Jonah hadpreceded him to Nineveh . Thefact that he had been delivere dfrom the "great fish" could havemeant to the Ninevites t h a tJonah's God was more powerfu lthan theirs. Or they may hav ethought that their god had co-operated with Jonah's God i nsending him to them. In any even ttheir repentance seemed sincere ,and God-accepted it, and did notdestroy the city.' °

The Scriptures state that "Go drepented of the evil" which h ehad intended to bring upon th epeople of Nineveh . God's view-

point in situations of this kind i sbeautifully illustrated in a lessonwhich he gave to the Prophe tJeremiah. 1 5

Jesus explained that because ofthe repentance of the Ninevites ,in the judgment day they will ris eup and testify against the Israel-ites of his day.' This means thatthe Ninevites and the Israelite sof Jesus' day will be awakenedfrom the sleep of death and givenan opportunity to make amend sfor their past. It will be morefavorable for the Ninevites thanfor the Israelites because of thei rrepentant attitude when Jehovahsent one of his prophets to them .It will be the same in this respec tas it will be in the case of otherwicked people of the ancientpast ."

Jonah was quite disturbed overthe fact that God exercised mercytoward the repentant Ninevites .He explained, in fact, that it wa shis fear that this would happe nthat caused him to flee to Tar -shish when first asked by God totestify against the Ninevites .Jonah explained that he knew o fGod's mercy and love, thereforehad reached this conclusion.' °And now that it had happened,he wanted to die .

Throughout the ages it oftenhas been true of God's peoplethat their hearts have been want-ing in compassion . Few, if any,have ever measured up in large-ness of outlook and mercy to tha t

of our loving Heavenly Father.Jonah could not bear to face th efact that his word would no tstand, that he had been overruledby the mercy of God.

The Lord, of course, did no tagree with Jonah's viewpoint . Heexplained to the prophet that th eNinevites did not know their righ thand from their left so far astheir responsibility toward hi mand toward righteousness wasconcerned .' 9 It is because of thislack of knowledge on the part ofthe whole world of mankind thatGod has arranged in his plan to

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANT THOUGHTS

The story of Jonah and the great fish is a reminder of the miracle-working power of God. Jonah's own deliverance from the stomac hof the fish testifies to this. Additionally, Jesus referred to this ex-perience as an illustration of his deliverance from death, and tha tthis would be a sign to the generation of his day . Jesus' resurrectionwas a still greater demonstration of the mighty power of the Creator .The repentance of the Ninevites under the preaching of Jonah is to beused as an object lesson in the future day of judgment .

SOMEONE has said that character is what one is in the dark ; inother words, what one does and how he behaves when he think s

no one is watching . But it is just as true that character is whatwe are or become because of the light ; that is, the light of theglorious Gospel of Jesus Christ which has shined into our hearts .

Our reaction to the truth and how we are exercised by expe-riences while Iiving the truth, develop our personality, and it i simpossible to have a character pleasing to God unless we permi tthe light of truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to have full swayin our minds and in our. lives . Our mind is the battleground wherethe "good fight of faith" is being fought . Therefore Paul tells usin Romans 12 :2 : "Be not conformed to this world : but be yetransformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prov ewhat is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God . "

Physicians tell us that every particle of the human bodychanges within a few years, but there is no chemistry, eitherhuman or divine, that can entirely expunge that which we pu tin our mind. And this is in full accord with God's law, "For what-soever a man soweth, that shall he also reap ."—Gal . 6 : 7

While it is true that all of us inherit certain traits and charac-teristics from our parents, these do not represent our character .Our character is what we develop subsequently . It is a record ofour own thoughts and acts which are prompted by our own in-dividual motives and intentions . What we are constantly thinking

about and aiming toward, and trying to obtain, becomes a perma-nent part of our life .

We, as Christians, are seeking those things which are above,and are continually setting our affections there . In doing thi swe are establishing habits of thought, so that when the strain sof labor and care are lifted for a time, our thoughts, like th eneedle to the pole, quickly return to rest in God. This is beauti-fully expressed for us by David in Psalm 116 :7: "Return unt othy rest, 0 my soul ; for the Lord bath dealt bountifully withthee . "

In Galatians 6 :7 Paul wrote, "Be not deceived ; God is no tmocked : for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap . "Hosea expressed the same truth when he said, "They have sownthe wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." (Hosea 8 :7) Solo -man said, "He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity." (Prov. 22 :8 )Again Paul wrote, "He which soweth sparingly shall reap alsosparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bounti -fully ."—II Cor . 9 : 6

This principle is true, and has been proven time and again a spart of the operation of divine law . All divine law, whether o fnature or morals, is but the operation of certain fixed principlesof righteousness, having as their object the peace and happinessof all intelligent creatures under its jurisdiction . Obedience tothat law will bring its reward of happiness, while interferenc ewith. it will incur its certain penalty .

For example, if we put our hand into a fire it will be burne dand we will suffer pain, but if we hold our hand before a fire i twill be warmed and thus minister to our comfort and happiness .So it is with the law of nature, it is designed to comfort and bless ,yet prepared also to punish if we violate its proper use. Not onlyso, but it is prepared to grade the penalties in proportion to th eaggravation or offense against it .

To illustrate, if you put your hand into a fire and keep it therefor a very short time it will become scorched, or seared .- If yo upersist and keep it in a little longer, it will blister ; and, if kept instill longer, the fire will consume it. Apply fire properly for thecooking of our food and we are rewarded with a savory, tasty

meal; but, if applied improperly, the food will be rendered un -desirable and unfit for consumption .

Water, like fire, is also one of our greatest blessings, yet ifthe law of nature is disregarded it becomes an agent of deat hand destruction. And so it is with our thoughts; if we violate theprinciples of righteousness we deface the image of God in ourbeing.

The reward or penalty of right or wrongdoing we call the "lawof retribution ." It may be delayed, but the harvest will alwayscome. Both nations and individuals are coming to realize thismore and more. The operation of the law of retribution is mos tmanifest among classes and nations . This is so for two good rea-sons. First, because of their prominence and world-wide publicity ;and secondly, because of necessity their harvest must come dur-ing their present life, since they will have no existence beyond it ,

But this law also operates in individuals whether they are prom-inent or not . Every thought harbored and disposition exercise dbecomes a fabric of individual character . This character is moreor less pliable, flexible, plastic, in our early life ; but in the courseof years it becomes fixed, crystallized, hardened . It is in recog-nition of this that judges are lenient toward first offenders ,whereas habitual criminals are recognized as hardened charac-ters, dangerous to society, and are therefore given long ter msentences . The former, first offenders, have a good opportunit yto reform sufficiently to again take their place in society as re-spectable citizens . It is in view of this that they are given a ligh tsentence, whereas a habitual criminal is considered hopeless .

Here are some valuable lessons for us . If we cultivate a char-acter along the lines of righteousness and truth in accord withthe light we possess, whether it be of conscience, or revelatio nalso, we will be rewarded with a right and benevolent character .On the other hand, if we cultivate along the lines of depravityand self-will, the fruits of such a character will bring a fearfu lpenalty .

No wonder the prophet wrote, "Keep thy heart with all dili-gence; for out of it are the issues of life ." (Prov . 4:23) FerrarFenton translates this text, "Guard ever your thoughts with allcare for from them come the issues of life ." It is in harmony

with this that the Apostle Paul penned the beautiful words ofexhortation found in our text .

This is a very important exhortation, because if it is followed i twill definitely help us to guard our thoughts and keep our hearts ,and will lead us unto life . We can rest assured that such conse-crated thinking is both pleasing to and approved by God, andwill bring its reward in due time .

The heart represents the will, the intentions, and is the gov-erning power of the whole man . Those whose wills are true, andcentered in God, have a fixed and uncompromising purpose . Suchhave pure hearts, and come under the promise mentioned i nthe 5th chapter of Matthew, "Blessed are the pure in heart : forthey shall see God . "

While the will is the controlling power of man, we must re -member it is subject to various influences . If our thoughts ar eimpure, unjust, or unholy, our power of will shall be impaired .It is with this thought in mind that we can especially appreciat ethe wisdom of the Apostle Paul's advice when he tells us whatto think about, what should be the character of our thoughts .

Our thoughts not only mold our character, but they also de-termine our destiny . Someone has truly said, "Sow a thought andreap a word . Sow a word and reap an action . Sow an action an dreap a habit . Sow a habit and reap a character . Sow a characterand reap a destiny ." Our thoughts are the initiative of what w eare or will be, and all conduct and action must begin with a previ-ous thought . Good thoughts will lead to good conduct, and th eresults will be good, whereas evil thoughts will lead to evil con -duct and results .

To illustrate, when God decided to create the world he had aplan, first of all, respecting it . It was a good plan, backed bygood thoughts, and all that he has been doing is following thatplan, because he knows that the results will be good .

Satan, however, sowed evil thoughts, and his course shall prov efatal to him and injurious to others . It began with a wrongthought, the result of which led into sin, when he said, "I willascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars o fGod : . . . I will be like the Most High." (Isa . 14:13, 14) Luciferhad a covetous and selfish spirit, a spirit in opposition to God.

The flesh, because of its fallen condition, has a spirit which i sadverse to God's . It is an "adversary" spirit, the spirit of Sata nwhich has become dominant in the human family. The Lord' speople, because of the imperfections of the flesh and the in-herited weaknesses from father Adam, can never attain to huma nperfection no matter how much they may so wish .

We have blemishes and weaknesses of brain and body whic hprevent us from ever becoming perfect this side of the veil .Nevertheless, we must strive to live up to the standard of per-fection as much as possible, and the Lord has promised to com-pensate for our unintentional weaknesses and shortcomings . Hi sgrace is sufficient, and will enable us to overcome and endure .

In Galatiains 6 :8 we read, "He that soweth to his flesh shal lof the flesh reap corruption ; but he that soweth to the Spiritshall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." The thought is that if weallow the adverse spirit of the flesh to control our thoughts an dsow them, we will reap accordingly . The results will be evil ,corruption, and if persisted in will even lead to the second death .

The Apostle Paul is here speaking to the Christian church, th efollowers of Christ . These are encouraged to sow to the Spiritof God who is a righteous Being . If such think upon heavenlythings, and continue to do so, they shall reap a great reward —all the glorious things promised to them as Christ's followers .

The first requisite in sowing to the Spirit is to have a loya land willing heart. We cannot be God's children if our hearts ar enot right . In order to qualify and come into a right heart condi-tion it is necessary that we put away sin, and repent and accep tJesus as our Sin-bearer . Then we are to heed his words, "If anyman will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up hiscross, and follow me." In so doing we are sowing to the Spirit . —Matt . 16 :24

Stating it a little differently we must first be justified, we mustbe cleansed, we must have a clean heart, a clean mind, puremotives . This is done by turning away from sin and acceptin gJesus as our Redeemer, and consecrating ourselves completely t oGod. The imperfections of the flesh are now covered with the robeof Christ's righteousness, and all of our former impure thoughts

and actions are also covered and forgiven. We are cleansed inthe precious blood of Jesus Christ .

Now something else must take the place of our forme rthoughts, habits, hopes, and ambitions in order to produce ne wthoughts, new actions, good conduct, new hopes, and new aims :To accomplish this, a sowing to the Spirit of God is necessary ,and we may use everything that God, in his graciousness and lovefor us as his children, has provided. We may use the concord-ances, dictionaries, Studies in the Scriptures, and all the help sthat God has given to us to understand his Word better . We mayassemble ourselves with those of like precious faith ; yea, weare expected to do so in order to be filled with the new, higher ,spiritual thoughts, hopes, aims and ambitions .

Thus we begin to be filled with the things of the Spirit, the bes tthings, because they are the thoughts and standards of God .They are the verities pertaining to his wonderful plan of redemp-tion and his loving character . If we do otherwise than sow to theSpirit it will mean that we have received the grace of God invain; that our cleansing, our justification, has not been used fo rits intended purpose ; that it was useless in our lives .

It is probably with this lesson in mind that Jesus spoke th ewords which are recorded in Matthew 12 :43-45, and which here-inafter will be quoted . But first let us consider the importanc eof having good thoughts and good things filling our hearts an dminds as stressed by Jesus in the 33rd through the 37th verse .Jesus said, "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good ; orelse make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt : for the treeis known by his fruit . 0 generation of vipers, how can ye, bein gevil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the hear tthe mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure ofthe heart bringeth forth good things : and an evil man out of theevil treasure bringeth forth evil things . But I say unto you, Tha tevery idle word that man shall speak, they shall give accoun tthereof in the day of judgment : For by thy words thou shalt b ejustified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned . "

In the 25th verse, speaking to the Pharisees, we read that"Jesus knew their thoughts." He had just healed a man whose

hand was withered, and had cast a demon out from a- man whowas both blind and dumb insomuch as now he both spake an dsaw. The Pharisees accused Jesus of doing these miracles by th epower of Beelzebub, the prince of devils . It is for this reason thatJesus strongly denounced them saying, in the 34th verse, "0 gen-eration of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? fo rout of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh ."

Matthew 12 :43-45 reads, "When the unclean spirit is gone ou tof a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and find-eth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whenceI came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, an dgarnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven otherspirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwellthere: and the last state of that man is worse than the first . Evenso shall it be also unto this wicked generation . "

We can all appreciate the lesson which is thus so simply illus-trated by our Master. Our minds, our hearts are compared to ahome in which an unclean spirit dwelt, a worldly spirit, a selfis hspirit, a spirit adverse to God's . Then we received a knowledg eof Jesus, why he was born in earth, why he died, and the import-ance of the work of his first advent . We appreciated this lovin gand life-saving information . We accepted it with our whole heartand repented, and on the basis of these facts made a full an dunreserved consecration, and were justified to life . We were de-clared right, just . Our house, our mind, was emptied, swept, an dgarnished of all human hopes, and aims, and ambitions. It wascleansed .

But now it is essential that we fill our minds, our "house" wit hgood things, that we entertain good thoughts, that we invite goo dcompany and that our hopes, aims, and ambitions are no longe rearthly, but spiritual . This is done by inviting Jesus to occupyand to dwell in our mind, and to be enthroned in the chief placein our heart. In Revelation 3 :20 we hear the words of our blesse dRedeemer, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any manhear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and willsup with him, and he with me . "

We who have invited Jesus to make his abode with us hav eentered into a most blessed relationship, and are enjoying swee t

and precious fellowship with our Redeemer . He has brought uspeace that passeth all understanding, even the peace of God .Jesus being the way, the truth, and the life, has brought us i nline to receive all of these benefits . He has taken us to pleasan tplaces, and we are at rest in the heavenlies with spiritual aims ,spiritual hopes, and spiritual ambitions .

We are filled with the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Jesus, whichis the Holy Spirit, promoting peace and love and power and thespirit of a sound mind, as well as begetting us to the divine natureand anointing us to office in The Christ . We are in a happy frameof mind, rejoicing always with and in the Lord, speaking inpsalms and hymns and spiritual songs, and making melody in ou rhearts to the Lord . Then, too, exceeding great and precious prom-ises are ours to claim, plus the privilege of co-operating with ourLord both now and in the future in furthering his divine pro-gram which he has revealed to us .

If our minds have been thus cleansed we should not permi tthem to be left empty ; we should fill them with thoughts of Go dand his divine plan and character . If we do not invite our Maste rto occupy our minds, bless and lead us in the narrow way o fself-sacrifice, then, as Jesus warned, other things than thos eapproved by God will enter . We will again fall into our old waysand not only have our former spirit, but in addition jeopardiz eour future existence of life on any plane . If we should be castinto outer darkness only the Lord knows how great would b ethat darkness .

Having been once enlightened, brethren, let us all demonstrat eour appreciation by showing forth faithfully the praises of himwho has called us out of darkness, remembering that failure t omake use of the privileges which are ours through consecratio nand justification could lead us to a condition of mind as pre-dicted by Jesus—the last state of that man will be worse tha nthe first . The essence of this lesson should be applied to ourselve spersonally every day . And how can anyone improve the beginnin gof the day better than suggested by the psalmist as incorporate din our morning resolve :

"My earliest thought I desire shall be: `What shall I render

unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cupof salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord [for grace tohelp] . I will pay my vows unto the Most High.' (Ps. 116:1244)Remembering the divine call, `Gather my saints together unt ome ; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice '(Ps . 50:5), I resolve that by the Lord's assisting grace I will today ,as a saint of God, fulfil my vows, continuing the work of sacri-ficing the flesh and its interests that I may attain unto the Heav-enly inheritance in joint-heirship with my Redeemer . I will striveto be simple and sincere toward all . I will seek not to please an dhonor self, but the Lord. I will be careful to honor the Lord wit hmy lips, that my words may be unctuous and blessed to all . I willseek to be faithful to the Lord, the truth, the brethren, and al lwith whom I have to do, not only in great matters, but also inthe little things of life . Trusting myself to divine care and theprovidential overruling of all my interests for my highest wel-fare, I will seek not only to be pure in heart, but to repel al lanxiety, all discontent, all discouragement . I will neither murmurnor repine at what the Lord's providence may permit, becaus e`faith can firmly trust him, come what may' "

Our minds are so constructed that we can accumulate and holdmany thoughts . Really, there is no end to the wonderful possi-bilities along this line, but our capacity and ability to receiv ethem is limited with each day. We tire as the day progresses, an dour mind also tires ; and this too differs with various individuals ,even as do their talents and abilities .

Now, if we fill our minds with things of this world, there wil lbe very little room left to receive the spiritual good things . Therewill be very little time left to "consider the Apostle and Hig hPriest of our profession, Christ Jesus." There will be no time leftfor prayer and worship, which are necessary for the growth o fthe new creature in Christ Jesus . There will be very little timefor study and appreciation of God's Word so essential to ou rsanctification.

God realizes that all of this takes time and training, and he ha spromised to grant us all of the grace necessary in order that w emight train our minds to think along heavenly lines, to "set our

affection [margin, or mind] on things above, where neither mothnor rust can corrupt, and where thieves cannot break throug hnor steal ." (Col . 3 :2; Matt . 6:20) As we think upon those thingswhich are good, our minds will become stored with valuable goodthings, which in turn will result in our speaking and acting ac-cordingly.

We have heard about the father who wanted to teach his so na lesson along this line . The son was in the habit of reading cheapnovels, and calling him one day the father said, "John, will youplease take this bushel of apples and empty it, and take th ebushel to the woodshed and fill it with chips?" The son did a she was told . When he returned the father said, "Now put in th eapples ." The son replied that he couldn't since there wasn' tenough room for both the chips and the apples . Then the fathersaid, "That is just what you are doing with your mind . You havebeen filling it with chips and there isn't any room for the apples . "

Let us, dear brethren, learn this lesson well and fill our min dwith the things of the Holy Spirit—God's plan and characterand all of the lovely, just, noble things from his Word . How won-derful to be able to say with the psalmist, "In the multitude o fmy thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul ." (Ps . 94:19 )Surely God's thoughts are comforting and delightful to our whol ebeing, and "how great is the sum of them," they cannot be num-bered. (Ps . 139:17 ; 40:5) How very dear and precious they areto us. We know that no human being could ever invent them .

It all seems like a beautiful fairy tale, yet it is true, and w eare not dreamers . Just how great God's thoughts are in compari-son to man's is expressed by God through the Prophet Isaiah i nthe 55th chapter, verses 8 and 9 : "For my thoughts are not yourthoughts, neither are my ways your ways, saith the Lord . For asthe heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higherthan your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts . "

Brethren, "Let this mind be in us, which was also in ChristJesus." (Phil . 2 :5) If we consecrate our thinking to the ways ofGod, and set our affections upon these higher thoughts of God ,we will become children after his own heart . May God be withus all to this end!—Contributed

"Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, andstewards of the mysteries of God . Moreover it is required of stewards ,

that a man be found faithful ."—1 Corinthians 4 :1, 2

A DEDICATED follower of th e1 Master is one who has com-mitted all that he has and is tothe service of the Lord, to beused in keeping with the divinewill. This includes time, strength ,talents, influence, money—every-thing. The Lord does not takethese away all at once, but leave sthem in the custody of the give rto be used as indicated by hi ssanctified judgment until com-pletely consumed on the altar ofsacrifice. Thus every true dis-ciple is a steward over his ownassets .

However, our text is speakin gof another phase of Christia nstewardship . Paul explains that a s"ministers of Christ" we ar e"stewards of the mysteries o fGod." These "mysteries of God "are not what we give to the Lord ,but what he gives to us . Brieflystated, these "mysteries" wouldbe the truth as revealed to us b yGod's Holy Spirit . Jesus also usedthe expression, "mysteries of thekingdom of God ."—Luke 8 :1 0

CHRISTIAN LIFE AND DOCTRINE

Jesus related two parable swhich illustrate our privilege sand responsibilities as steward sof the truth . One is The Parableof the Pounds, and the other Th eParable of the Talents . In TheParable of the Pounds Jesu slikens himself to a "nobleman, "and in The Parable of the Talents ,to a "man." In both parables,after delivering the "money" an d"his goods," Jesus represent shimself as going away and re-turning .

In both of these parables, whenthe Master returns there is areckoning with his servants base dupon the use they have made ofthat which was entrusted to them .In the case of the pounds, onlyone is delivered to each servant ,but the same rewards in differingamounts are administered to thefaithful. Varying numbers of tal-ents are distributed to the serv-ants in the other parable ; but, inthe time of reckoning, all thefaithful receive the same kind o freward .

It is evident that both of theseparables refer to the work of theLord in the earth throughout theGospel Age, and to the fact tha tit is accomplished by servantswho are faithful to their steward -ship over the "goods" which ar eentrusted to them for this pur-pose . The differences in the twoparables are not contradictory ,but illustrative of two importan tfacets of the manner in which th ework of God throughout the Gos-pel Age is accomplished .

It is important to notice tha t.in both these parables that whic hwas distributed to the servant shad not previously been theirs .The "pounds" belonged to th e"nobleman," and the "talents" t othe "man." The parables relate dby Jesus are merely illustration sof truths which are elsewhere se tforth in the Bible in straight-forward language, and the Scrip-tures reveal just what it wasthat Jesus gave to his disciples ,his servants, at the beginning ofthe age in order that they migh tbe properly equipped to go fort hin the divine service .

When Jesus appeared to hi sdisciples before his ascension, hi s"going away," he said to them,"Ye shall receive power, afte rthat the Holy Spirit is come upo nyou: and ye shall be witnessesunto me both in Jerusalem, andin all Judea, and in Samaria, an dunto the uttermost part of th eearth ." (Acts 1 :8) Previously Jesushad promised to send the Holy

Spirit, which, he said, would guid ehis disciples into all truth.—John 16 :12-1 5

Jesus referred to the Holy Spir-it as "the Spirit of truth," andvery properly so . We cannot re-ceive the truth into our heartsand be guided and strengthenedby it without the aid of the HolySpirit ; nor can we possess theHoly Spirit apart from the truth .Thus, when the gift of the HolySpirit was bestowed upon th ewaiting disciples at Pentecost i tenabled them to know the truth ,to understand the marvelou steachings of Jesus which pre-viously they could not "bear." Itwas through this gift of the HolySpirit that the "mysteries of God "became theirs to know and to useas the Lord's stewards .

There is a close relationshipbetween the use of our own abili-ties in the Lord's service and ourstewardship of the mysteries ofGod. Indeed, it is the Spirit ofthe truth, the Holy Spirit, whic henergizes, or quickens us to per-form faithful and acceptable serv-ice as ambassadors of Christ . I tis by faithfulness in the use ofthe truth that the work of theLord during the Gospel Age iscarried forward .

which are common to all hisservants, assets which enabl ethem to render acceptable serv- ,ice in his cause .

It seems evident that the"pound" represents somethingwhich the Scriptures teach isactually furnished by the Lord tohis people . First we were draw nto the Lord and to the point offull consecration by the power ofthe truth . After making a fullconsecration to do God's will wereceived the begetting and anoint-ing of the Holy Spirit . It is theanointing of the Holy Spiri twhich, in particular, authorizes usto be partners in the work of theLord . To assure us that our laborsare acceptable despite the im-perfections of our flesh, we als oreceive the robe of Christ's right-eousness for our justification .

It. is through the proclamationof the truth that God's work dur-ing the Gospel Age is accom-plished in the earth . And whatis : that work? Paul wrote, "Godwas in Christ, reconciling theworld unto himself, not imputin gtheir trespasses unto them ; andhath committed unto us the wordof reconciliation . Now then [be-cause of this] we are ambassa-dors for Christ, as though Goddid beseech you by us : we prayyou in Christ's stead, be ye recon-ciledto God ."—II Cor . 5 :19, 2 0

The Talent s

THE Parable of the Talentspresents a different viewpoint ,

another aspect of Christian stew-ardship . The number of talentsgiven to each servant varied . Wequote : "The kingdom of heave nis as man traveling into a farcountry, who called his servants ,and delivered unto them hisgoods . And unto one he gave fivetalents, to another two, and toanother one, to every man accord-ing to his several ability ; andstraightway took his journey."—Matt . 25 :14, 15

The word "several" in verse 15has been supplied by the trans-lators . The Greek word "idios,"translated "several" in the Com-mon Version, has more t h emeaning of "self" or "own." TheDiaglott word for word transla-tion reads, "to each accordingthe own power." The Greek wordtranslated "ability" in this pas-sage is an interesting one. It isdunamis . Prof. Strong's definitionof the word is : "Force (literal orfigurative) ; specially miraculouspower (usually by implication amiracle itself) "

In keeping with this definition .we find the word dunamis trans-lated "miracles" eight times, an d"miracle" once . In many otherinstances miraculous power orauthority is implied . For example ,Peter wrote concerning t h eMaster's followers that they ar e"kept by the power [dunamis] o fGod through faith unto salva-tion." (I Pet . 1 :5) Jesus said tohis disciples, "Ye shall receiv ethe power [dunamis] of . the Holy

Spirit coming upon you ."—Acts.1 :8, margin

Based upon the general use ofthe Greek word dunamis in theNew Testament, and the word forword translation in the Diaglott,"the own power," we suggest thatthe expression, "according to "refers to the exercise of th epower and authority of th e"man" of the parable in the dis-tribution of his own "goods . "This does not relieve the servant sof the parable of the responsibil-ity to use their own natural en-dowments in the service of th eLord, but emphasizes that th e"goods" distributed by the Lordquicken and energize these t omake their use effective and ac-ceptable to the Lord .

This suggestion is in keepin gwith II Peter 1:2, 3, which reads,"Grace and peace be multiplie dunto you through the knowledg eof God, and of Jesus our Lord ,according as his divine powe r[dunamis] hath given unto us allthings that pertain unto life andgodliness, through the knowledgeof him who hath called us to[margin, or `by'] glory and virtue . "Here we are reminded that "al lthings" pertaining to our servic eof the Lord and our relationshipto him are gifts distributed ac -cording to or by divine power.This would include the "talentsof the parable . "

This distribution of gifts toJesus' followers is said to be"through the knowledge" of the

Lord, or ; . in other words, throughthe truth . We receive this knowl-edge through the revealing powe rof the Holy Spirit. Hence the ex-pression, "Spirit of truth," isused by Jesus in promising thedisciples the gift of the HolySpiritt.

While from one standpoint, asillustrated in The Parable of thePounds, the Lord's consecratedpeople, through the truth, receivea common endowment which en-ables them to render acceptableservice ; on the other hand, thei ropportunities and abilities toserve differ, and this is indicate dby The Parable of The Talents .In Ephesians 4 :7, 11, 12 Paul ex-plains what the impartation o fthe Holy Spirit means to the dis-ciples of Jesus with respect to th ework of the ministry . He wrote :

"Unto every one of us is give ngrace according to the measureof the gift of Christ" ; that is, i nkeeping with the manner inwhich, by divine authority, Christdistributes the "talents ." We readfurther : "And he gave [or made]some, apostles ; and some, proph-ets; and some, evangelists ; andsome, pastors and teachers ;for the complete qualification[Diaglott] of the saints, for th ework of the ministry, for theedifying of the body of Christ . "

In I Corinthians 12 :4-11 Paulpresents a similar thought :

"Now there are diversities ofgifts, but the same Spirit. Andthere are differences of min-

istries [margin], but the sameLord . And there are diversitie sof operations, but it is the sameGod which worketh all in all. Butthe manifestation of the Spirit i sgiven to every man to profitwithal . For to one is given by theSpirit the word of wisdom ; toanother the word of knowledg eby thee same Spirit ; to another'faith by the same Spirit ; to an-other the gifts of healing by thesame Spirit ; to another the work-ing of miracles ; to another proph-ecy; to another the discerning ofspirits ; to another divers kinds oftongues: but all these workeththat one and selfsame Spirit, di-viding to every man severally a she [the Lord] will ." The Diaglott

renders "he" as "it" [the HolySpirit] ; but the thought is thesame, for the Holy Spirit actsonly as directed by the Lord .

The miraculous gifts of theSpirit were given only to certainones in the Early Church . Butthere are many other, and diver-sified gifts with which the tru efollowers of the Master in ever ypart of the age have been en-dowed. In Romans 12 :3-8 we read :

"For I say, through the grac egiven unto me, to every man tha tis among you, not to think of him -self more highly than he ough tto think; but to think soberly, ac -cording as God hath dealt toevery man the measure of faith .For as we have many members inone body, and all members hav enot the same office: so we, being

many, are one body in Christ ,and every one members one ofanother . Having then gifts differ-ing according to the grace that i sgiven unto us, whether prophecy ,let us prophesy according to theproportion of faith; or ministry ,let us wait on our ministering :or he that teacheth, on teaching ;or he that exhorteth, on exhorta-tion: he that giveth, let him doit with simplicity ; he that ruleth,with diligence ; he that showethmercy, with cheerfulness. "

Paul admonishes that in theuse of these gifts of the Spiri t"love" should be "without dis-simulation," that we should "ab-hor that which is evil" and"cleave to that which is good . ""Be kindly affectioned one to an-other with brotherly love," Pau lwrote, "in honor preferring on eanother ." To this Paul adds notto be "slothful" but to be "fer-vent in Spirit ." Possibly Paul ha din mind the unfaithful servant i nthe parable who was described byJesus as "wicked and slothful . "

The Apostle Peter confirmsPaul's view of Christian steward-ship, and also exhorts to faith-fulness in the use of the gift swith which we have been en-dowed by the Holy Spirit . Hewrote : "As every man hath re-ceived the gift, even so ministerthe same one to another, as goodstewards of the manifold grac eof God . If any man speak, let him

In this passage the Greek wordwhich is translated "manifold"means varied, or diversified . Weare made stewards of the "di-versified" grace of God, mani-fested in the many gifts of th eSpirit by which we are qualifiedfor the ministry . It is these manyand varied gifts, opera tingthrough our natural, but im-perfect faculties, which seem tobe represented by the talents ofthe parable .

On the other hand, as we havenoted, those treasures of the Hol ySpirit imparted through the trut hwhich are received in common b yJesus' true followers may well berepresented by the "pounds" o fthe other parable . We need boththe pounds and the talents to beacceptable and efficient servant sof the Lord .

Faithfulnes s

FAITHFULNESS to our stew-ardship of the mysteries of Go dcalls for the dedication and us eof all our natural endowments .These we have given to the Lord ,and he allows us to keep them touse for him, sacrificing them in

the faithful discharge of our stew-ardship. Our natural abilitie splay a part in the work of th eministry, and without doubt aretaken into consideration by theLord. However, some of Jesus 'own apostles were ignorant andunlearned men according to thestandards of this world, yetthrough the endowments of theHoly Spirit they were used might-ily in the divine service. Paul,on the other hand, was wellequipped with natural talents ,and he used them faithfully ,sacrificing them in the interestsof his stewardship . He wrote ,"What things were gain to me ,those I counted loss for Christ. "(Phil . 3 :7) Paul's eyesight becameimpaired, which hindered him i nhis ministry, yet the Lord did notdeem it best to restore his eye-sight . Paul wrote, "Lest I shouldbe exalted above measure throughthe abundance of the revelation s[with which God had blessedhim], there was given to me athorn in the flesh, the messengerof Satan to buffet me . . . . Forthis thing I besought the Lordthrice, that it might depart fromme. And he said unto me, Mygrace is sufficient for thee : formy strength is made perfect i nweakness . Most gladly thereforewill I rather glory in my infirm-ities, that the power [dunamis] ofChrist may rest upon me ."—II Cor. 12:7-9

Paul regardless of his infirmities .This is true of all the Lord's peo-ple . But in order for it to be true ,we must yield up our all for hisuse . Only thus can we be faith-ful in our stewardship of "th emysteries of God . "

The increas e

ACCORDING to both parables ,faithfulness resulted in the in -crease of the "goods" which weredelivered to the servants . The on ewho was given five talents gaine dfive; and the one who was give ntwo talents gained two. Each ofthe servants in The Parable ofthe Pounds was given a pound.One gained ten pounds, anotherfive .

What is represented by theseincreases? We 'cannot expect aparable to fit the facts in everydetail . The evident principal pur-pose of the two parables underconsideration was to encourag ezeal on the part of the Lord'speople throughout the GospelAge. The parables teach that th eLord Jesus was going away, andthat he would return to recko nwith his servants, -and that torender acceptable service the ywould be endowed by gifts fromhim; also that they would be re -warded for their faithful servicein his cause.

These two parables illustratethe partnership of Jesus and hi strue church in carrying out th edivine plan . We know that accord-ing to the divine plan God's work

throughout the earth during theGospel Age has been reachingand preparing a "people for hi sname" to live and reign withChrist . To begin with, these peo-ple are of the sin-cursed anddying world . Through the min-istry of the truth on the part ofthose who are endowed with th etruth and its spirit, these arereached and reconciled to Godthrough their belief in Christ andtheir full consecration to do th eLord's will. It is thus that theyreceive the Spirit of sonship, andare authorized to be the ambas-sadors of Christ in the work o fthe ministry, a ministry that isconducted through the use of the"word of reconciliation . "

The Bible assures us that as aresult of the reign of Christ th eearth will be filled with a knowl-edge of the Lord . (Isa . 11 :9) Thisdoes not mean that the knowledgeof the Lord will be written acros sthe skies . It simply means thatthe hearts and minds of the peo-ple will he filled with thatknowledge . So it would seem con-cerning those of the Gospel Agewho are endowed with the Spiri tof truth. To the extent thattheir faithful service contribute sto the implanting of the sam eSpirit of the truth in the mind sand hearts of others this could b econsidered an increase .

This thought seems to be fur-ther borne out by noting the re -wards administered to the faith-ful ones of the parables . In The

Parable of the Pounds the onewho gained ten pounds was givenauthority over ten cities : and theone who gained five pounds wasgiven authority over five cities.These are promises of rulership ,symbolized in the Scriptures by acrown.

In the Parable of the Talents ,the promise to all the faithful i stwofold—they were to be maderulers over many things, andwere bidden to enter into "th ejoy" of the Lord . Thus both ruler-ship—a crown—and rejoicing areassured to those who faithfull yuse their talents .

With these rewards in mind letus note what Paul wrote in hi sletter to the brethren at Philippi .We quote : "Do all things withoutmurmurings and disputings : thatye may be blameless and harm -less [margin, or, 'sincere'] th esons of God, without rebuke, inthe midst of a crooked and per-verse nation, among whom yeshine as lights ; . . holding forththe word of life; that I may re-joice in the day of Christ, that Ihave not run in vain, neithe rlabored in vain ." (Phil . 2 :14-16 )Thus Paul indicated that if thebrethren at Philippi remaine dfaithful they would be to hi scredit in the day of Christ, aproof that he had "not run i nvain, neither labored in vain, "This he explained would, in theday of Christ, lead to his rejoicing ,his "joy of the Lord" promise din the parable .—Matt. 25:21, 23

Even more pointed in this con-nection is Paul's statement to theThessalonian brethren . To themhe wrote : "For what is our hope ,or joy, or crown of rejoicing[margin, or, `glorying']? Arenot even ye in the presence ofour Lord Jesus Christ at his com-ing? For ye are our glory an djoy." (I Thess . 2 :19, 20) Thus Paulexplains that both his "crown," orrulership, and his rejoicing whe nreckoned with by Jesus at his re -turn would be his because ofthese faithful brethren to whomhe had ministered the truth.These would be part of the in -crease, having been endowed wit hthe Spirit of the truth and provedfaithful to their stewardship .

Along the same line Paul wrot eto the brethren at Corinth : "Yehave acknowledged us in part,that we are your rejoicing, eve nas ye also are ours in the day o fthe Lord Jesus." (II Cor . 1 :14)Peter, Apollos, and others had als olabored in Corinth, and therebyassisted in establishing the Cor-inthian brethren in the truth andin the Lord . The brethren in Cor-inth had also contributed to som eextent to Paul's own upbuildin gin the faith . It was concerning th eLord's work in Corinth that Paulwrote :

"Who then is Paul, and who isApollos, but ministers by who mye have believed, even as theLord gave to every man [the gift spertaining to the ministry]? Ihave planted, Apollos watered ;

but God gave the increase . Sothen neither is he that plantet hanything, neither he that water-eth ; but God that giveth the in -crease . Now he that planteth andhe that watereth are one : andevery man shall receive his ownreward according to his ownlabor ."—I Cor. 3 :5-8

Thus the increase resultingfrom our faithful use of theLord's "goods" seems clearly in-dicated. And it is encouraging t orealize that the co-operative ef-forts of the brethren are als omentioned by Paul in connectionwith the increase with which theLord blesses their efforts. Thereare many who might feel that th eLord has never used them to in-terest others in the truth andbring them to the point of fullconsecration . But it is also tru ethat there are probably few in-stances in which a brother or asister in the truth, apart from co -operation with others of "likeprecious faith," has been thusblessed by the Lord .

It is because all of his servant swork together that the Lord' swork prospers . And all can havea share in it . Not all have receive dthe gift of prophecy—publi cspeaking. Not all are teachers.But all have, through the gift o fthe Holy Spirit, been endowe dwith some talent which can b eused in the general ministry o fthe truth, the ministry of recon-ciliation . As Paul explains, ourgifts differ "according to the

grace that is given unto us . ""Ministry" is one of the gifts o fthe Spirit. This simply mean sserving; and there are so man yways in which we can serve thetruth and serve one another .

Paul also mentions "he thatgiveth" [margin, or, `imparteth'] ,and "he that showeth mercy . "(Rom. 12:8) One who is filledwith the Spirit would be speciall yqualified to show mercy, and thu scontribute to the upbuilding ofthose who need to be helped alongthis line . And how blessed toothers are those who are able to"impart" love and sympathy forthe comfort of the Lord's people !

The Holy Spirit energizes thosewho receive it. Paul describes i tas "the Spirit of power [dunamis] ,

and of love, and of a sound ,['disciplined,' Strong] mind. "(II Tim . 1 :7) The Holy Spirit givesstrength to the timid, enablin gthem to serve in ways and to anextent that would not be possibl eif they depended only upon theirnatural abilities .

The Lord has also given us th e"Spirit . . . of love." Paul wrotethat the "love of God is she dabroad in our hearts by the HolySpirit which is given unto us . "How worthless would be our min-istry if it were not motivated bylove. It would be nothing morethan "sounding brass" or a"tinkling cymbal ." — Rona . 5 :5 ;I Cor. 13 : 1

plined mind, a mind, that is ,endowed and regulated by thetruth of the divine plan . This als ois vital to an acceptable and ef-fective service of the Lord . Howfutile would be our efforts asministers of reconciliation apartfrom this endowment !

The "Wicked" and "Slothful "

THE servant who was given on etalent and buried it in the groun dis described as "wicked an dslothful," and the servant whowrapped his pound in a napkin i sdescribed as "wicked ." The prac-tical lesson of both parables issimply the importance of faith -fulness in our stewardship, re-gardless of how much of theMaster's "goods" he may haveentrusted to us .

Speaking of his servants, Jesussaid, "Ye are the light of theworld," and he admonished the mnot to put their light under a"bushel ." (Matt. 5:14-16) In th eparables, the wrapping of thepound in a napkin and the bury-ing of the talent in the earthseem to suggest the same ideaof permitting the truth to be

hidden from others through ourunfaithfulness .

The unfaithful one in bothparables speaks of the hardnes sof their master . This seems to bebut an excuse. Jesus explains tha tif this is what the servants reallybelieved, it should have spurredthem on to faithfulness, rathe rthan otherwise . Here we are re-minded that the human heart i svery deceitful. Let us be watchfullest we be found making excusesfor unfaithfulness.

Let us keep before our mind sthe practical lesson of both para-bles, which is that "it is requiredin stewards that a man be foundfaithful." We have been mad e"stewards of the mysteries ofGod," and in whatever way, orways, we have been endowed bythe Holy Spirit to minister th etruth and its blessings to others ,let us do so with diligence, forthis is the great project upo nwhich we have embarked . Withthe Lord's blessing we know thatthe Lord's cause can and will suc-ceed . God's work will be accom-plished, and through our ow nfaithfulness we can share inhis joy .

T HE Jewish Law required the sacrifice of bulls and goats . Thistaught, by example, that without the shedding of blood no re -

mission of sin is possible . But animal blood could not actuallytake away sins. This arrangement was merely typical, and Go dcould not be pleased with it, especially after Jesus offered him -self . When Jesus said, "Lo, I come to do Thy will," he gave hi sall . This was acceptable to God, and it took away the old typica lsacrifices and established the better sacrifices . (Heb. 9:23 )Taking God's will as his will made Jesus' sacrifice of his ownwill acceptable . He was sanctified by this .

Verse 10 shows that this same will sanctifies us, the follower sof Jesus, but only through the offering of Jesus' humanity .Taking God's will as our own will means sacrificing our ownwill, and thus we are sanctified, set apart, for God's service .In this way we become ministers of reconciliation in God's grea tprogram of eradicating sin .

In what way does the true Christian differ from all others?In good works? No, because many others do good things also .In self-denial? Others do this also. Some worldly people eve nsuffer for righteous causes . Matthew 7 :22 shows that many willsay, "Have we not done many wonderful works, and even proph-esied in Thy name?" Still the Lord will say, "I never approvedof you." Some who even preached in his name are not approved .None of these good things alone marks true Christians . The onlything which none but true Christians do is to take God's will a stheir own, that is, God's will as it is written in his Word . Thismarks the true follower of Jesus .

Putting God's will first makes a great change in us, especiallyin our minds . So great is this change that I Corinthians 2 :16 says ,"We have the mind of Christ ." This chapter shows what itmeans to have the mind of Christ . For one thing, we are ableto know the mysteries of God, to discern things hidden fro mthe world, the natural man .

It is the mental and moral powers which constitute man theimage of God . The ability to think, to remember, to know righ tfrom wrong, raises man above the plane of animals. Even infallen man, the power of the mind does great things for him .Most remarkable is the ability to take an ideal, a hope, and tolive by it . The hope of a successful career causes many student sto work hard and concentrate on things difficult in their studies .A widow can determine to raise her family by working har dherself . The power of determination inspired by an ideal doe sgreat things .

A New Determinatio n

I ONCE knew a young man who was wild and irresponsible .One day he said, "I am determined to give up my wild waysand settle down ." It was soon manifest that he meant what h esaid. He did not become a Christian, or even profess to be re-ligious, but he did become a successful business man . So greatwas the change that people said he was a new man . He did notget new brains, but his mental powers were used in an entirel ydifferent way. His determination was new, and gradually hisways of thinking and living came into harmony with this ne wdetermination .

This ability to take a new purpose into our minds is used b yGod in drawing and developing the new creation . God cause sa seed of truth to he sown in our minds . We hear what Jesu scalled "the word of the kingdom ." (Matt . 13:19) This word ex-plains what God's kingdom is to do, and that by followin gJesus we can have a part in this kingdom . If we are honest ,humble, and hungering after righteousness, this word will causeus to think more and more seriously about accepting Jesus an dfollowing him. First comes the thought that we ought to serve

God. Later this crystallizes into a fixed purpose . A desire toconsecrate is changed into decision and determination .

If the determination is sincere, God accepts our consecrationand begets us with his Holy Spirit . We are thus begotten b y"the Word of truth," "not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh ,nor of the will of man, but of God ."—(James 1 :18; John 1 :13)We have this treasure in an earthen vessel, our human bodies .The new purpose works in us and changes us . This change isnot merely to become a new or reformed human being, as ma yhappen to anyone who takes a new purpose into his mind . Thisis God's work, and results in a new creation, begotten on th edivine plane .

Enemie s

THIS new purpose has enemies within us . The Spirit of truthenters our mind as a great general might land on a foreignshore and recruit his army from among those he desires t oconquer. He lifts up and encourages the rightly disposed . Thesehelp him in his conquest . There are, however, lower elementsof society who oppose his efforts and give him considerabl etrouble . So in each of us there are higher and lower elements .The higher ones such as righteousness, mercy, truth, Iove, wel-come the Word of God. The lower tendencies—lawlessness an dselfishness oppose the doing of God's will.

These lower tendencies are called "members" in Colosians3:5: "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth ;fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupis-cence, covetousness ." These oppose the setting of our affection ,or mind, margin, on things above as counseled in verse 2 . Thesemust be put to death often, whenever they arise . But Roman s6:13 suggests that there are good "members" which we can us eas instruments of righteousness unto God—mercy, compassio nare among these . We can see why Paul calls these "members . but the evil which I would not, that I do ." Verse 23 explains whythis is . He says, "I see another law in my members, warrin gagainst the law of my mind." The Iaw of sin worked in his mem-bers causing him to do things he did not want to do . The law ofsin is to fallen man what the law of gravity is to physical objects.Anything heavier than air tends to be drawn to the center o fthe earth unless stopped by a greater force . So our naturalhabits tend to gravitate toward earthly things . The tendencies o fthe new mind oppose these earthly predilections warring agains tthe law of our mind . Paul said he had a new mind, a new pur -pose, a determination to do God's will at any cost. This was op-posed by the tendencies and cravings of his body, his earthe nvessel.

A Spiritual Min d

THE new mind is spiritual because it is begotten by God' struth . It is also spiritual because it is a part of the new creaturewhich, in the first resurrection, will receive a divine body .(II Pet. 1:14) It is the same mind that Jesus had after his baptism .I Corinthians 2 :7 explains about this mind of Christ, that it has"hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world to ourglory." This wisdom is hidden because the natural man canno tcomprehend the wisdom of God . Verses 9 and 10 show that th egood things in reservation for those that love God will caus emany that do not love him now to do so at that time . It will besaid, "Lo, this is our God!"—Isa . 25 : 9

These wonderful blessings now hidden are definitely state dto be revealed to us by God 's Spirit . Any of God's truths no tnow perceived by the natural man are thus classed among th edeep things of God, the spiritual things . The deep things of Go dare not complicated theological questions . If these were thedeep things, the poor and unlearned could not have a spiritua lmind .

A clear knowledge of restitution and the high calling indicate sa spiritual mind because these things are revealed by God .Verse 12 explains that the Spirit is given to us "that we mightknow the things that are freely given to us of God ." Amongthese are the merit of Christ's sacrifice and the exceeding great

and precious promises by which we can become partakers o fthe divine nature .

The mind of Christ includes his determination to do God'swill at any cost . In Philippians 2 :5-7 . we have this statement :"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus ." Verse s7 and 8 explain that this caused Jesus to make himself of n oreputation and become obedient unto death, even the death ofthe cross. This required a very strong determination, a power-ful motive to control himself, and to sacrifice his humanit ycompletely.

Back of this powerful motive was a clear knowledge of God' splan—what God designed to do, and how and why . A skilledworkman must know what he is doing and why, or he soonloses interest in his work . So with us, a clear knowledge ofGod's plan is necessary to inspire a strong determination . Thisdetermination must continue to keep us sacrificing, or God' sfavor will be withdrawn. Only if the determination continue scan we be doers of the Word and not hearers only .

A Willing Mind

BEFORE we can get a clear knowledge of God's plan, we mus thave a willing mind ; we must be willing to obey God . John 7:15-17explains that the Jews marvelled at Jesus' ability to teach . He hadnever learned from the generally accepted sources of educationof that time. Jesus answered that the doctrine was not his own ,but was from God. Then he said, "If any man will do his will, h eshall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether Ispeak of myself . "

Anyone who sincerely wishes to do God's will shall know wha tGod's teachings are . Then, in verse 18, Jesus says that a tru eteacher of God will seek God's glory, not his own. Therefore onewho has the mind of Christ will not only know God's purposes ,but will have a strong determination to do exactly what Go dwants him to do . He will know the truth. He will have meat indue season .

Most members of the earthen vessel oppose the new mind .The President of the United States has a cabinet of advisers .The members of this cabinet advise and endeavor to influence

the President in all important matters, but the President mus tmake the final decisions and endeavor to have them enacte dand enforced. Our new mind is our manager. And it is in-fluenced more or less by the various tendencies of our humannature . The natural mind of a normal human being is fleshlyor carnal, and in its fallen state is not subject to the law of God ,neither indeed can be. (Rom. 8 :7) The natural mind may havesome conflict with its various members, but generally there i slittle conflict along this line. Most people do what they wantto do .

The new spiritual mind, however, is opposed by the earthl ymembers, since they naturally gravitate to earthly things . Paulsays the flesh lusts, or desires, against the spirit, and the spiritlusts, or desires, against the flesh . These are contrary the oneto the other, so that ye cannot do the things that ye would .(Gal . 5:17) The new mind being the manager must resist theseearthly tendencies, and maintain its ascendancy . It is the con-flict that makes it possible for the new creature, the new mind ,to be an overcomer; and, because of being an overcomer, to beseated with Christ in his throne.

Doing God's will as written sanctifies us, sets us apart fo rGod's service . It also transforms us by the renewing of ourminds . God's will is represented by this new manager, the min dof Christ . We are to let this mind rule us until our sacrifice i sfinished . According to Romans 6:13 we are to "yield our mem-bers . . . as instruments [margin, Gr. arms, or weapons] o frighteousness unto God ." Depraved tendencies must be put todeath . Good tendencies must be put to work doing God's will .Mercy, sympathy, justice, truth and other good qualities are tobe exercised as much as possible . Whenever decisions must b emade, let these "members" be heard .

things, a hindrance to the development of the new creature ; orthey can be on idle things, or things of no profit . But to be o fhelp they should be centered on the good things of God's Word .Doing this would be in harmony with Peter's advice to "gird u pthe loins of your mind," set them on heavenly things .(I Pet. 1 :13) As we endeavor to do this, the Holy Spirit of Go dwill then search out the deep things of God, and we will get anincrease of knowledge. We will get to know more of the detailsof God's plan . And the clearer our knowledge is, the greaterwill be our inspiration to continue doing God's will .

Another helpful "member" is our conscience, which we ar eto' keep "void of offense ." (Acts 24 :16) Conscience is a God-given power to discern right and wrong . Furthermore, it actsquickly . A person may say, I had a feeling that this wasn't right ,though I didn't know why. So our conscience is like a goodwatchdog, and we should listen to even its faintest hark . Weshould never violate our conscience .

Paul said that to him that esteemeth anything to he unclea n[margin, Gr. common], to him it is unclean. (Rom. 14:14) Actual-ly any creature of God is clean, Paul said, but a person wh obelieved it was unclean should never violate his conscience bypartaking, until he learns differently . The conscience can beeducated . Later a person would find, as Paul did, that all crea-tures of God are clean . Before Paul saw the heavenly vision, hecould, with a clear conscience, persecute Christians . But thisvision educated his conscience, and he saw this was wrong .

So our conscience is a very great help to us. We read inHebrews 10 :22 that our hearts should be sprinkled from an evilconscience, or from a consciousness of evil . This is done by anacceptance of the ransom merit of our Lord's sacrificed life .On the basis of this, our consecration is acceptable and ou rconscience is clear before God . But it is necessary to keep ou rconscience clear by watching our thoughts and actions, an dkeeping them fully in harmony with our vow of consecration .In this way we keep our conscience "void of offense towar dGod, and toward men ." Our conscience is thus a great help tothe new manager, the mind of Christ, in keeping the earthenvessel in subjection .

.Prior to this, the conversion of

the first Gentile took place, andthe account is given in Acts ,chapter 10, of how Cornelius, aRoman soldier, was admitted intothe favor of God and shown . theway of truth . This marked a turn-ing point in the history of thechurch, for the message was nolonger confined to the favore dnation of Israel, but in the prov-idence of God, reached out be-yond that narrow boundary .

to Joppa for Peter. God had toldhim to "send . . . and call hitherSimon, whose surname is Peter ,. . . who, when he cometh, shallspeak unto thee ." The messagewas to be conveyed to him b ypreaching. Verse 6 says, "He shal ltell thee what thou oughtest todo." This is a very telling ex-pression . How often we, who havecome to treasure our Father' sWord, are able to turn to thosesacred pages and find the answerto many of life's problems—"whatthou oughtest to do ." Paul, writ-ing to the Thessalonians, said,"Ye have received of us how yeought to walk ."—I Thes . 4 : 1

"Thine ears shall hear a wor dbehind thee, saying, This is theway, walk ye in it, when ye turnto the right hand, and when yeturn to the left ." (Isa . 30 :21) Prof .Young says that this expression ,"the way," means a trodden way .It is a well-marked and knownway. The words "behind thee"indicate that it is a voice fro mthe past . It is the testimony o fthose who have traveled along thetrodden way .

Our Lord stands out predom-inately as the one who said, "I amthe way, the truth, and the life, "and there are also the apostle sand teachers who have beenraised up from time to time, al lof whom have traveled this trod -den way before us and have leftan example, that we should fol-low in their steps .—John 14 :6 ;I Cor . 4 :14-16 ; 11 :1

The Early Church used the ex-pression, "in the way," in th esame manner as we say "in th etruth." The word "way" as use din the New Testament means, ac -cording to Prof . Young, road o rjourney. This thought of a jour-ney suggests our Christian walk ."We should walk in newness oflife ." (Rom. 6 :4) "Let us walkhonestly, as in the day." (Rom.13 :13) "We walk by faith, not bysight ."—l1 Cor . 5 : 7

We are also told to walk worth yof the Lord, and to walk circum-spectly. When Saul was persecut-ing the church he obtained letter sfrom the high priest empowerin ghim to go to Damascus, and ifhe found any "of this way" hemight bring them bound to Jeru-salem. Here the expression woul dseem to mean "of this way o fthinking ."—Acts 9 :1, 2

In Acts, the 18th chapter, w eread of a Jew named Apollos, wh ois described as an eloquent ma nand mighty in the Scriptures ."This man was instructed in th eway of the Lord ; and being fer-vent in the spirit, he spake andtaught diligently the things of theLord, knowing only the baptismof John." (Acts 18:24, 25) Her eagain we find those who ha dclearer light on the plan and pur-poses of God (in this instanc eAquila and Priscilla) rejoicing t oimpart to Apollos the good thing sthey had themselves received .Verse 26 says, "They took hi munto them, and expounded unto

The expressions, "way of God, ""way of the Lord," "way of life, ""way of salvation" are foundin the Scriptures many times, andthe "way of the truth" once .(H Pet . 2 :2) Many valuable les-sons can be learned by consider-ing what they teach us concerningour daily walk and conduct aswe strive to follow on in the "wayof the Lord . "

Peter, in his second epistle ,chapter 2, verse 2, speaks of th eway of truth being "evil spoke nof ." Weymouth translates this ,"brought disrepute ." This i ssomething to which we must giv eearnest attention, lest at any timeour course of action should brin gthe truth into disrepute . InII Peter 1 :3 we read that we havebeen given all things that pertai nunto life and godliness, throughthe knowledge of him that hat hcalled us to [margin, or, by] gloryand virtue ." After reminding u sof the precious promises to hel pus to escape the corruption i nthe world, and instructing us howto grow in grace so as not to b eunfruitful, Peter says (verse 9)that if we lack these things—afterso much wholesome instruction—it is evident that we are blind,and have forgotten that we wer epurged from our old sins .

This is indeed a serious posi-tion, so serious that Peter liken ssuch a person to the sow that waswashed returning to her wallow-

ing in he mire . (I Pet . 2 :22) Thewarning given in II Peter 2 :1, 2 ,against false prophets, fals eteachers, by reason of whom th eway of truth is evil spoken of, isvery grave ; and it is to counterthese dangers that we are giveninstruction on how to grow i ngrace and become "neither barren[margin, Gr . idle] nor unfruitfu lin the knowledge of our Lor dJesus Christ ."--II Pet . 1 :1 8

Peter referred to "the voice be -hind" when he wrote of what hesaw on the mount of transfigura-tion when he heard the voice ofGod saying, "this is my belove dSon." (vs . 17 ; Matt . 17 :5) He goeson to say, "We have also a mor esure word of prophecy ; where -unto ye do well that ye take heed,as unto a light that shineth in adark place ."—II Pet. 1 :1 9

Paul, in his defense beforeFelix, as related in Acts 24 :10-24 ,said, "This I confess unto thee ,that after the way which they cal lheresy, so worship I the God ofmy fathers." (vs . 14) The Jews atJerusalem had found him in thetemple, and had laid hands onhim and accused him of teachin geverywhere against the peopleand the Law, and profaning thetemple . Paraphrasing, he said ,"This is not true—they canno tprove the things whereof they ac-cuse me." But he confessed tha the was now following the waythey called heresy .—vss . 12-1 4

He, too, had opposed "this way "before his own eyes had been

opened to the way of truth. Weread in Acts 22 :4, "I persecutedthis way unto the death, bindingand delivering into prisons bot hmen and women." Now he hadbeen shown by God that "th eway" he had previously calledheresy was the true way of salva-tion, and he had given his life t othe ministry of proclaiming thi sgreat truth, and was glad to spen dand to be spent in the Lord' sservice .

Another "word behind thee," aword from the past, is given to u sin Hebrews, the 9th chapter . Ittells of the tabernacle with itscandlestick and table of show-bread ; then of the second veil ,and that part of the tabernacl ewhich is called the "Holiest of all "with its golden censer, ark of th ecovenant, the golden pot of man-na, Aaron's rod that budded, thetables of the covenant, and thecherubims of glory shadowing themercy seat.

Verses 6-9 state, "The priestswent always into the first taber-nacle, . . . but into the secondwent the high priest alone onceevery year . . . . This stands in complete con-trast to Romans 3 :10-16, wherePaul describes those who have notfound justification in God's sight .

"There is none righteous, no ,not one. "

How different is the position ofthe saints of the Lord! They arepictured by the Revelator, i nchapter 15:2, 3, as being on a se aof glass, and proclaiming th epraises of God . Because they ar eacquainted with the truth, "th eway," they are able to sing th esong of Moses and the Lamb, say-ing, "Great and marvelous are thyworks, Lord God Almighty ; jus tand true are thy ways, thou Kin gof saints [margin, or, nations, or ,ages ; Diag ., nations ; Rotherham,ages]."

A song is a beautiful and har-monious expression . This song o fi\loses and the Lamb is in perfec taccord with the Law and theGospel . The song or preaching o fthese overcomers is that whic hJesus, the Lamb, taught, andwhich Moses taught in the La wand the types. In proclaiming :"Great and marvelous are thyworks," we get a suggestion of th ewords of this song, or, at least ,some of its leading points .

Only those who are acquainte dwith God's plan recognize his actsas truly great and wonderful, an donly these can sing, "Righteousand true are thy ways, 0 King ofthe Nations ."—Diaglott transla-tion

We can tell of the righteousnessand justice of God's dealings wit hthe nations, since we have cometo see how he has permitted evi land death to come upon all as alesson to teach us to appreciatelife and righteousness. YOUR QUESTIONS1ADAM TO BE RESURRECTED

IN AN article in The Dawn Mag-azine dealing with the subject o fthe resurrection, a statement wasmade that all who have died, fro mrighteous Abel up to the presen ttime, and the generations yet un-born, will be raised from the dead .Was this intended to imply thatAbel's father, Adam, would not b eresurrected ?

NOT at all! This general state-ment was designed merely to con-vey the thought that all who havedied, and will yet die, will be raisedfrom the dead . Abel was mentione dat the beginning of this multitudeof death's captives simply becaus ehe was the first to die. Adam didnot actually go into the sleep ofdeath until several hundred yearsafter Abel was murdered, and thereference in the article was withregard only to the order in whic hthe human race has died.

It is true that Paul wrote, "As inAdam all die, even so in Chris tshall all be made alive . (I Cor . 15 :22 )Abel died "in" Adam, even thoug hhe went into the sleep of death lon gbefore Adam. And since the Scrip-tures indicate that he prove dworthy of a "better resurrection,"and will be among the "princes i nall the earth," we believe Abel wil lbe resurrected prior to Adam . Abe lwill participate in the resurrectio nof the just, while Adam will partici-pate in the resurrection of the un-just:Heb. 11:4, 13, 35, 39, 40 ;Ps . 45 :16 ; Acts 24 :1 5

The Scriptures teach that there

will be a resurrection of all the un-just . (John 5 :28, 29, R .V.) We rejoicein this loving feature of the divin eplan for human salvation, and arehappy to join with all who believ-ing, rejoice in proclaiming this, a swell as the other features of God'splan, to all who will give a hearingear .

SEPARATE FROM THE WORLD

Isaiah 52:17 reads, "Depart ye, de -part ye, go ye out from thence ,touch no uncleaen thing ; go ye ou tof the midst of her ; be ye clean ,that bear the vessels of the Lord."

From what are the ones who bearthe vessels of the Lord exhorted todepart?

WE BELIEVE that this is an ex-hortation to the Christian to beseparate from the world and fro mnominalism. Because many havelost sight of the privilege of sacri-fice it is hard to tell the differencebetween so-called Christians and arespectable person of the worldwho makes no such profession . Th eworldly church contains many taresin comparison with true wheat . Ourtext is a plea to forsake false doc-trines, false Christianity, and fals eprofessions ; to be free from theworld and its spirit and thus expressour appreciation of having the op-portunity to "bear the vessels o fthe Lord," enjoying the truth inthe love of it. It seems appropriat efor each one to resolve that we willdepart from the things that theLord hates, and live more complete-ly for him in carrying out our con-secration vows.

Servants of the Truth

1 HERE is no greater privilege in the world today than to be aservant of the truth . Some of us are reapers in the harvest of

the Lord ; others sow the seed; some water it ; and there are thosewho attend the crop while it is growing. Whether our part issmall or great in the Lord's work we are, nevertheless, hisservants .

The great objective of the Lord's servants in this life is tospend as much time as possible in his service and to his glory .Most of us are hindered from spending all of our time in thi sway because of the necessity of "providing for honest things ,not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men . "(II Cor. 8 :21) Our Father knows our circumstances because hisprovidences have arranged them; but he is pleased when thespirit of loyalty and devotion is manifested in our hearts, an dwe long to do more for him . If we are faithful in our little oppor-tunities, our Father looks upon us with as much favor as thoug hwe were faithful in the large opportunities .

Let us rejoice in the place which has been assigned to us asa servant, for "now hath God set the members every one o fthem in the body, as it hath pleased him." (I Cor . 12 :18) Thespirit of true consecration will enable us to use everything atour disposal in the Master's service . It is this spirit that continue sto be manifest during our day, finding expression in the sacri-fices of the Lord's servants.

The echo of labor is still heard in the Lord's vineyard . Litera-ture distributors are going from door to door ; brethren are in-viting others to public meetings; pilgrims travel from city to city ;radio and television programs are being broadcast ; truth litera-ture in many languages is being printed . There would be no echoof labor in the Lord's vineyard if it were not for the self-denial sof the servants of the truth . These self-denials include time ,physical strength, and earthly means, which further the variou s

branches of service . Those servants not able to share in the fore-going services may present the needs of the work and the workersat the "throne of grace ." (Heb. 4:16) In this way we all share inthe ministry of the Lord's work .

Public Meeting Films

A number of special public meeting efforts have been maderecently using color films. In most cases the response to a filme dpresentation is much more successful than when a speaker isadvertised . This is particularly true when a letter of invitationand a four-color folder are sent to those who have previously re-sponded to our witness efforts . The brethren in New York, N . Y . ;Lakeland, Fla . ; Chicago, Ill . ; Rochester, N . Y . ; York, Pa . ; Char-lotte, N. C . ; Oklahoma City, Okla . ; and Paterson, N . J., have usedeither "The Beginning and End of Death" or "The UnknownGod," which are one-hour color films .

During the convention in Vancouver, B . C., on May 19-21, thebrethren used a half-hour color film . Following the film showing ,Brother G. P. Ripper, who was on a pilgrim trip, presented someappropriate remarks enlarging on the theme of the film . Afterthe convention, Sister Berna McNee, secretary of the Vancouve rEcclesia, wrote to The Dawn as follows :

"We have been lifted up to such heights these past few day sthat it is hard to get back to the regular duties of life . Our con-vention has left us with joyous memories, and we wanted to tel lyou about it so that you could rejoice with us .

"Our public meeting was a wonderful success, and we are gla dthat we decided to use the colored film, "The Future of Israeland the World." While the song service was in progress, the pub -lic began to come into the hall.

"The brother at the door told us afterwards that after six o rseven came in he felt satisfied that our labors in putting ou t10,000 tracts were not in vain. Then, he said he was amazed t osee people actually lining up to get in . They tried to count them,and one brother tried to interview each one to find out what ha dattracted him—newspaper ad, tract at the door, announcement o nthe radio, or personal letter of invitation—but both efforts faile dbecause they came in so thick and fast . They estimate that therewere between 75 and 100 of the public . These added to the 150 ormore brethren who were already in the hall necessitated th e

quick addition of more chairs, and by the time the meetin gstarted the hall was packed—just like the old days !

"As I was sitting on the side of the hall up at the front, I wa samused to see the delighted expressions on the faces of thebrethren as they watched the people come in, and afterward sas they passed out literature and spoke personally to them . Broth-er Ripper gave pointed concluding remarks that just tied in s owell with the information given on the film, and when I told himthat I felt like jumping for joy and shouting, `Hallelujah,' b esaid, 'I'd like to jump with you! '

"Besides the privilege of telling the message of the kingdomto some who probably have never heard it, we had the adde dthrill of welcoming a sister who knew the truth many years ago ,but who had been out of touch with the brethren . She noticedthe ad for the public meeting, and when she got there and metsome of her old, old friends of the early days, she was so please dthat she came back for the next day of the convention, and intend sto come to our regular meetings from now on . We hope her in-tentions are carried out, because there is no need for her to b elonely when there are some of her brethren in Christ waiting towelcome her .

"All in all, our cup ran over, and we want to thank you fo ryour help in this effort and praise our Father together for all hisbounty . Please continue to remember us in your prayers . "

The brethren in Australia have been using the films also. Inconnection with the Adelaide convention a public meeting wa sadvertised which was well attended . Brother Ernest Crouch, wh ohas a supply of films on hand, received an encouraging reportfrom one of the elders of the ecciesia . The report said, in part :

"The convention is once again in the past, and possibly it wa sthe best we ever had. This is no doubt due to the influx of s omany, from various places and distances, added to which of cours ewas the Lord's blessing on the whole . This blessing is also possibl ewhere two or three may be met together in his name . It is under-standable that where quite a number are gathered in the sam espirit, the over-all effect would be more noticeable .

"We staged the film on Saturday evening, and some nameswere handed in requesting the booklet advertised . I do not knowif anyone counted the number of visitors present . I had a couple

of goes at it, but could not manage to tag them all down . I wouldsay the total could have been around the 100 mark . "

An isolated sister living in Farmington, Mo ., desired to useone of the color films in a special public meeting effort. Sheinvited some of the St . Louis brethren to help her. Brother W. A .Pardue gave us a report of the effort, which we quote in part :

"We are happy to report that everything went fine at the Farm -ington public meeting film effort . Sister Counts had requeste dthat we arrive at twelve o'clock for lunch, which was to be serve din the Masonic Building where the film was to be shown . Wearrived a little before twelve and found that Sister Counts an dher daughter, and Brother and Sister Baird had prepared a veri -

table banquet !"After dinner the tables were cleared, and we all assemble d

for a lesson from I Peter 2 :9. About a half-hour after this servic ethe strangers began arriving, and we rejoiced to see them comein. In all, twenty of the public attended, and the attention wasgood . It was a splendid witness, and we were very happy knowin gthat `it is God who giveth the increase .'"

Pilgrim Service

Pilgrim brethren continue to travel from city to city, feeding ,encouraging, and ministering to the people of God . In addition tothe service of the full-time pilgrims, special pilgrim trips hav ebeen made in order to serve the brethren overseas .

Brother W. N. Woodworth has made a pilgrim trip during whichhe was able to serve the brethren in Denmark, Germany, France ,Switzerland, and Great Britain . The German General Conventio nwas held in Ludwigshafen, where German-speaking brethre ngathered from most of Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland ,and even America! As usual, the convention was "the best ever, "and the brethren were greatly refreshed by the three-day gather-ing. The fundamental doctrines of present truth were once againdiscussed with great appreciation, and the brethren were en-couraged to press on . The testimony meetings gave evidence tha tour German brethren are doing what they can to lay down thei rlives in the service of the Master . Having Brother Woodwort hthere, from America, helped the brethren realize that a strong tiebinds our hearts in Christian love.

_Brother Pantel Hatgis is doing extensive pilgrim service amongthe brethren in Greece. En route, Brother Hatgis served thebrethren in Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland, particularl ythe annual convention at Portrush .

The brethren in Greece arranged for a special public meetin gin Athens on Sunday, June 30 . Brother Woodworth spoke on thesubject, "Life After Death," which was translated to the audienc eby Brother Hatgis. Approximately 700 heard this message ofhope .

When Brother Woodworth began to outline the truth that manis a soul and that he does not possess a soul, there was violentopposition to this truth on the part of some in the audience ,which caused a near riot . It was necessary for the building man-agement to call the police to restore order .

In addition to the meeting itself, a translation of the discours ewas sent to the major newspapers in Greece, and it is hope dthat this has multiplied the size of the audience thousands o ftimes. It is encouraging to realize that wherever the Lord' speople are they delight in telling others concerning our Father' scharacter and his plan that will solve every human problem .

Brother Woodworth also reported that he met "more than adozen brethren who have accepted the truth as a result of maga-zine advertisements ." This is encouraging! We remember how ,not long ago, our Greek brethren placed ads in many newspaper sin Greece and how the requests for a copy of "Hope Beyond th eGrave" began to pour in . This planting of the seed of truth ha sbeen increased by the Lord, for which we rejoice !

The Work in Italy

The Italian DAWN is now being printed here along with theEnglish, French, and Greek editions . As it makes its monthlyjourney to Italy we are thankful to the Lord for the mutua lprivilege which we share in being able to have a part in this work .Most of the Lord's people in Italy have little of this world's goods ,so it is necessary for others to support the work . However, thereare a number of consecrated brethen there who are laying downtheir lives in the Lord's service . They zealously spread the gla dtidings by speaking to others about it, and also by distributingtracts and booklets .

"Thank you dear brethren of The Dawn for all the help yo uhave given me in being able to grasp the wonderful truth . TheAURORA (the Italian DAWN) is a heavenly messenger to me an dI look forward to receiving it each month . When it comes late Ifear lest it has been lost on its long way. There is a great needfor the message of the truth in Italy and I pray that the Lord wil lhelp you and us to continue telling forth the good news . "

Here is a portion of another letter which came from Italy :"I have just returned home from a trip and found the AUROR A

waiting for me, which I read with much attention and considera-tion . I have read it over and over with increasing joy . The con-tents, consisting of the second chapter of volume six of STUDIE SIN THE SCRIPTURES, are a wonderful blessing to me . I am gladthat after many years we will have the privilege of reading par tof THE NEW CREATION, and it makes me happy to know tha toccasionally portions of this divine message will be publishedin AURORA .

"My hope is in the present Lord and I trust that he will grantus the great privilege of learning more of the wonderful truth .We are thankful for the divine plan which will bring blessings t othe oppressed and deprived of humanity . May the Lord bless you . "

The pilgrim service in Italy still continues . There is much wor kto be done among those who are interested in the truth, but ther eare only a few who can be of service . As Brother Tammuzzo, th epilgrim, makes his visits, he not only serves with discourses, bu the also conducts studies . Occasionally he is able to do follow-u pwork, calling on those who have responded to the witness effortsof the brethren .

There are two colporteurs serving in Italy. These brethren hav eworked in their own home towns, as well as in neighboring cities .As these brethren go from door to door with the message of trut htheir experiences vary . In some small towns they find much oppo-sition and often they are forced to make a hasty exit because o ffanatical reactions . However, at times they find some who havelost interest in those things which they have been forced to be-lieve in since infancy, and they are invited to come in and tellthem more concerning our loving Father .

Reaching Church Groups—A New Effor t

Beginning in September an effort will be made to take thetruth message directly into the churches . This will be donethrough Modern Talking Picture Service, which is in contact withhundreds of Sunday Schools, and other church clubs that us efilms .

A half-hour version of the color film, "The Unknown God, "will be offered to these groups . Any bookings that are arrange dfor will cost three dollars . Most public meeting efforts cost manytimes this amount, and often with meager results, so our hop eis that many "public meetings" of this kind will be arranged for .As usual, a free booklet will be offered to the audience at th econclusion of the showing, and it is our hope that many will re-quest it . This will enable them to become acquainted with ourFather's plan in a way which is not possible for them to do intheir regular church gatherings.

This new opportunity of service is an unexpected developmentand one for which we are most grateful to the Lord . As each o fus remembers the general interests of the harvest work in ou rprayers, we should especially pray for this new phase . We donot know how wide this door will open, but we wait on the Lord ,and will continue to look for his leadings . It may be that someon ewho is "hungering and thirsting after righteousness" will b ebrought in contact with the truth, and some of us will have afurther privilege of watering the seed planted .

And so our privileges of service continue in various ways . TheLord has been especially good to each of us . When we considerthat of all the millions of people in the world, our HeavenlyFather has singled out "just one here, and one there," it shouldfill our hearts with much appreciation . Let us faithfully continu eto fulfil our duties as servants of the truth, doing with our mightwhat our hands find to do !
