The Temple of the Jews was in Jerusalem. The great Jewish festivals were celebrated there. But each town had its Synagogue, where they met every Saturday.

Jesus began to make himself known by reading and teaching in the Synagogues. Saint Luke tells us that "everyone praised him and his fame spread throughout the region" (Lk 1, 1-4 and 4, 14-21).

One day Jesus decided to go to Nazareth, the town where he

had grown up and lived. And that Saturday he had to read

(coincidence?) "the volume of Prophet Isaiah and found the

passage in which it was written" which referred to the

mission of the Messiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because he has anointed me to bring the good news to the

poor...”

Whenever this piece was read, people thought of that mysterious character long awaited by all the people of Israel. And that day when Jesus read what was said about Him, it occurred to him to finish off the reading by saying: "Today this passage of Scripture that you just heard has been fulfilled." Which is the same as saying: “That of whom Isaiah speaks is I”.

What a surprise! Those present did not leave their

astonishment. But how is it possible! Is not this Jesus, the

carpenter's son? Nazareth was a small city. Everyone knew

him as one of them. And now he came to say that he was the

Messiah! The discussion ended with the well-known

statement that "no one is a prophet in his own land." And

they even tried to push Jesus off a cliff. But He disappeared

from them without their realizing it.

This moment in which Jesus in his Synagogue of Nazareth announced the fulfillment of the Prophecy of Isaiah was a moment of great importance and great solemnity. But it does not seem so solemn, because Jesus did everything in the greatest discretion: Jesus, an acquaintance from there, without the slightest sign of exaltation, reads the Prophecy and declares that it was being fulfilled in Him: that He was the awaited Messiah.

And it is that the moment had already arrived, "the fullness

of time", in which God no longer spoke through the ancient

prophets, but began to speak Himself. But they didn't believe

him. "He came to his own and his own did not receive him."

And we... do we believe in Jesus Christ? And do we believe in everything he has told us and arranged? Do we believe that He is the Messiah who came to save us? And more importantly: do we take advantage of the salvation that He brought us?

How do you take advantage of salvation? Very simple: doing

everything that He has told us is necessary to be saved.

El Templo de los judíos estaba en Jerusalén. Allí se celebra-ban las grandes fiestas judías. Pero cada pueblo tenía su Sina-goga, donde se reunían todos los Sábados. Jesús comenzó a darse a conocer leyendo y enseñando en las Sinagogas. Nos dice San Lucas que “todos lo alababan y su fama se extendió por toda la región” (Lc 1, 1-4 y 4, 14-21). Un día Jesús decidió ir a Nazaret, el pueblo donde había creci-do y vivido. Y ese Sábado le tocó leer (¿casualidad?) “el vo-lumen de Profeta Isaías y encontró el pasaje en que estaba es-crito” lo que se refería a la misión del Mesías: “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre Mí, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena nueva ...” Siempre que se leía este trozo, la gente pensaba en ese perso-naje misterioso tan esperado por todo el pueblo de Israel. Y ese día Jesús al leer lo dicho sobre Él, se le ocurrió rematar la lectura diciendo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la Escritura que acaban de oír”. Que es lo mismo que decir: “Ése de quien habla Isaías soy Yo”. ¡Vaya sorpresa! Los presentes no salían de su asombro. ¡Pero cómo es posible! ¿No es éste Jesús, el hijo del carpintero? Nazaret era una ciudad pequeña. Todos lo conocían como uno más de entre ellos. ¡Y ahora venía a decir que era el Me-sías! La discusión terminó con la sentencia tan conocida de que “nadie es profeta en su tierra”. Y hasta trataron de empu-jar a Jesús por un barranco. Pero Él se les desapareció sin que se dieran cuenta. Este momento en que Jesús en su Sinagoga de Nazaret anun-ció el cumplimiento de la Profecía de Isaías era un momento de gran importancia y de mucha solemnidad. Pero no parece tan solemne, porque Jesús todo lo hacía en la mayor discre-ción: Jesús, un conocido de allí, sin la más mínima muestra de exaltación, lee la Profecía y declara que se estaba cum-pliendo en Él: que Él era el Mesías esperado. Y es que había ya llegado el momento, “la plenitud de los tiempos”, en que Dios ya no hablaba por medio de los anti-guos profetas, sino que comenzó a hablar Él mismo. Pero no le creyeron. “Vino a lo suyos y lo suyos no lo recibieron". Y nosotros ... ¿creemos en Jesucristo? ¿Y creemos en todo lo que nos ha dicho y dispuesto? ¿Creemos que Él es el Mesías que vino a salvarnos? Y más importante aún: ¿aprovechamos la salvación que Él nos trajo? ¿Qué cómo se aprovecha la salvación? Muy sencillo: hacien-do todo lo que Él nos ha dicho que es necesario para salvarse.
