We are pleased to announce that the2006 D.O. Shah Annual Lecturer inSurface Science will be ProfessorCurtis W. Frank, William M. Keck, Sr.Professor of Chemical Engineering atStanford University. Professor Frankalso holds courtesy appointments inthe Departments of Materials Scienceand Engineering and Chemistry atStanford. Professor Frank received abachelor's degree in chemical engi-neering from the University ofMinnesota and a M.S. and Ph.D. inchemical engineering from theUniversity of Illinois.

Professor Frank is the 1990 Winner ofthe C.M.A. Stine Award of the Division of Materials Science andEngineering of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In 1993,he served as Chairman of the Division of Polymer Chemistry of theAmerican Chemical Society, and he has held other positions in A.C.S.He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is on the EditorialBoards of Journal of Polymer Science-Polymer Physics, Polymer, andPolymers for Advanced Technologies.

Professor Frank was employed by Sandia National Laboratories inAlbuquerque from 1972 to 1976 after which he joined the ChemicalEngineering Department at Stanford as an Associate Professor. He hasheld sabbatical appointments at the Ecole Superieure de Physique etChimie de la Industrielle de la Ville Paris in 1982 and at the Max PlanckInstitute for Polymer Research In Mainz, Germany in 1991 and again in1997.

Professor Frank's expertise is in the areas of soft material interfaces, polymer physics, and molecular assemblies. He is the author of over230 peer-reviewed publications and over 200 non-reviewed chaptersand proceedings. Current areas of research involve the structure anddynamics of polymers in constrained geometry, interfacial science ofbiomolecular materials, and development of an artificial cornea basedon polymer hydrogels.
