The EDWARD C. HINDS SYMPOSIUM is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Edward C. Hinds, Founder, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston. Dr. Hinds was a pioneer in the specialty and internationally renowned for his many contributions to oral and maxillofacial surgery. The organizing committee of the Edward C. Hinds Symposium

feel we have assembled an excellent program that will offer valuable and practical information to surgeons in an environment conducive to bringing the family. On behalf of the Houston Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, we would like to invite you to attend the Twenty-First Annual Edward C. Hinds Symposium.

The 2011 symposium will offer: • An ACLS re-certification course • Staff Emergency Anesthesia Management Course • 12 hours of CE credits (Dental) • Up to 10.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the essential areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston designates this education activity for a maximum of 10.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Stuart E. Lieblich, D.M.D.

Dr. Lieblich graduated from Rutgers University with Highest Honors in 1977 and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Kings County/Downstate Medical Center in New York and served on the full-time faculty of the University of Connecticut until 1988. Currently, he is in private practice in Avon, CT and maintains a part-time teaching appointment as an

associate clinical professor.

Dr. Lieblich has contributed to over 15 textbooks and published over 45 peer reviewed papers and abstracts. His special interests are in ambulatory anesthesia and periapical surgery. Dr. Lieblich has served as president of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is on the editorial boards of Anesthesia Progress and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is the editor of the Connecticut State Dental Association.

Robert Bruce MacIntosh, D.D.S.

Dr. MacIntosh is a graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry, and gained his surgical training at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C., the University of Pittsburgh, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and the University of Zurich. He has served as Coordinator of Residency Education at the University of Detroit Mercy , Section Chief at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, and Program Director at Henry Ford. He has been a career-long consultant to the United States Army and various teaching institutions, and has

served as President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

RAYMOND REID LECTURESHIP SPEAKER

David M. Grogan, DDSAfter completion of his residency training, Dr. Grogan entered private practice as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Waco, Texas. After 13 years of successful practice, Dr. Grogan chose to enter academics and was invited to join the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry. Since then, Dr. Grogan has participated in all aspects of the Predoctoral pharmacology curriculum and helped develop new continuing education opportunities for dentists in North Texas. He

was an instrumental participant in designing new sedation and emergency guidelines for Texas dentists, on behalf of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Currently, Dr. Grogan is an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry.

Ronald J. Redden, DDS, FADSADr. Redden is a graduate of Baylor College of Dentistry and completed a comprehensive residency in dental anesthesiology at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr Redden is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and past Head of the Section of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Dental Branch. He instructs residents, developed TSBDE anesthesia certification courses, published numerous journal articles and book chapters on anesthesia, and is an instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He holds hospital and staff positions in anesthesiology with the UT - Houston Department of Anesthesiology and Harris County Hospital District, is a Fellow in general anesthesia with the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of

Anesthesiology. Dr Redden has served as a consultant for the Anesthesia Advisory Committee for the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, an anesthesia consultant for the US Army, and currently maintains a part-time practice in Dental Anesthesiology in Houston.

Karen E. Crowley, DDS, MSDr. Crowley is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in private practice in southern New Hampshire. She attended Mount Holyoke College, the University of Virginia, Georgetown University School of Dentistry and the University of Vermont. She received her oral and maxillofacial surgery training at Boston University. As part of the Working Group of the ADSA Foundation, she helped develop a course with didactic, task training and human simulation components on complications during sedation. She is a faculty member for the ongoing ADSA Human Simulation Emergency Management Course and is working on strategies to make this course

easily accessible to the dental anesthesia team. She is President of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and has a particular interest in patient safety and the role of human simulation education in dental anesthesiology.

Andrew Herlich DMD, MD, FAAPDr. Herlich is a dually qualified, dually trained anesthesiologist from Pittsburgh. He received his dental degree from Tufts University and completed Dental residency and fellowship at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, followed by an anesthesia and critical care fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He then received a medical degree from Ross University, and completed an anesthesia residency and fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York. Dr. Herlich is currently Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Mercy Hospital University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and is a Visiting Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He has had a long-standing interest in simulation technology and helped establish and direct the Temple University School of Medicine Human

Simulation and Patient Safety Center. Dr. Herlich has served as a long-standing liaison between ASA and the AAOMS and will be bestowed an Honorary Fellowship this year by the AAOMS.

Clark Whitmire, Jr., DMD, JD, FCLM, FACDDr. Clark Whitmire has written and lectured extensively on the subjects of office anesthesia, medical assessment and management, and the medico-legal issues associated with anesthesia practice. Dr. Whitmire earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham, Alabama and completed a comprehensive medical residency and fellowship in anesthesiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He earned a Juris Doctorate (JD) from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama. He is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology in

the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston, Dental Branch. Dr. Whitmire is a fellow of both the American College of Dentists (FACD) and American College of Legal Medicine (FCLM).

ACLS Re-certification

An ACLS re-certification course will be offered on Thursday,

April 14, 2011. The course will be held at the University of

Texas Dental Branch, 6516 M.D. Anderson Blvd., in room B81.

Parking is available in Garage 6, which is at the

corner of M.D. Anderson Blvd. and Moursund Street.

Check-in will be from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

Class will be from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch and breaks will be provided.

All attendees should purchase an ACLS Provider Manual

(pub. 2006) and the 2010 Handbook for Emergency
