THE 2011 SNOWSHOE OPEN Rick Trawinski
On February 6th, thirteen hardy souls took to the skeet fields to contest our first registered shoot of 2011, THE SNOWSHOE OPEN. With Saturday dumping a new covering of fresh snow (as if we haven’t had enough as of late) the fields needed a bit of work before we could even see them. Fortunately the weather cooperated and Frank Pantalena and some hardy volunteers made the skeet venue ready for competition. The day began with competitors taking on the mighty 12 gauge. With a great day for shooting (for Michigan, in the winter) looming, the scores began trickling in. Frank Pantalena ended up event champ with Bill Crawford runner up and Andrew Bielman 3rd. The class winners were A-1 Rich Curlett, B-1 Ted Zolnoski, C-1 Rick Marsh and D-1 Jim Van Eaton. With one gun down and three to go everyone attacked the 20 gauge. This gun produced a 3 way shoot-off for Champ, runner up and 3rd. Frank Pantalena, John Klida and Rich Baker took the field and they finished in this order respectively. The class winners were A-1 Rich Curlett, B-1 Rick Trawinski and C-1 Nathan Kleba. Being that we had reached the half way point, everyone took a small break to grab a bowl of chili and some of Sula Saylor’s kielbasa and sauerkraut. With a full gullet next in line was the 28 gauge event. The magnum .410 produced another shoot off for event champ and runner up. Rich “The Legend” Curlett came away victorious with John “Big Sexy” Klida being runner up. Event 3rd went to Rick Trawinski after defeating Frank Pantalena and Rich Baker in a shoot-off. Class winners were B-1 Frank Pantalena, C-1 Rich Baker and D-1 Nathan Kleba. With three down and one to go, out comes the “Pea Shooter” the .410. This little gun strikes fear and terror into the mighti-est of shooters. With the weather holding out for the entire day the scores came in. Frank Pantalena (wasn’t he suppose to be tired or something) continued his hot shooting and took the event champ crown. Runner up and third went to Rick Trawinski and Ted Zol-noski. The classes broke down as follows. B-1 Bill Crawford, C-1 Rich Baker and D-1 Jim Van Eaton. With everything being shot, it was time to see who persevered and took the HOA titles. With his consistent and fine shooting Frank Pantalena came in HOA Champ. The Runner up in HOA went to Rich Baker and Event 3rd was Rick Trawinski. The classes played out as follows, Rich Curlett A-1, Bill Crawford B-1, John Klida C-1 and Jim Van Eaton D-1. With the Snowshoe in the books it is time to look forward and focus on our “new” shoot for 2011, THE SHILLELAGH OPEN. The date for the event is MARCH 6th, so put the date in your book, break out your shotgun and join us for some competition and fun. Being the 75th Anniversary year we are looking forward to a great skeet season. Our 2 premier events, “The Clark Brown Open” and “The Ted Hanaford / Great Lakes Open” are going to be bigger and better than before. So come on out and have some fun. We will see you on the “fields”.

Our committee meets at the Clubhouse on the 3rd Sunday of each month, immediately following the scheduled New Member Orientation. All members are welcome to attend.
The cowboys took a break from having matches in January and February so there is no match results to report. April starts the cowboy silhouette season at DSC so dust off your 22 rim fire rifle or pistol caliber center fire rifle and come to the cowboy range and have some fun. Let’s talk about equipment (or lack of needed equipment).
Of course eye and hearing protection are required on the cowboy range as it is on all ranges. There are classes for rim fire and center fire pistol caliber rifles. Hand guns can be used if you think you can hit an 8 in tall ram at fifty yards. Single shot, bolt, lever, pump or auto rifles are welcome. Iron sights or optical will work. Classes for juniors and adults. Lead bullets are required for all cali-bers. Rim fire bullets can be plated but no jacketed ammo. Common center fire pistol calibers are 38 special, 44 special, 45 colt some of the less common calibers are 44-40 or 44 colt, standard veloc-ity ammo – no magnums. Any will work with lead bullets. No rifle calibers like 30-30. That’s about it; all you need for cowboy silhouette is eye protection, ear protection a rifle and ammo to shoot the match. Juniors need to be escorted by an adult.
The Cowboy range will open for practice at 12:00 noon. Paper targets are provided for check-ing your sights. Benches and spotting scopes will be setup up for the one hour practice period. After checking your sights you can shoot at the silhouette targets or the swinger targets for practice. At 1:00 pm the range will go cold for the safety meeting and an explanation of how to shoot the match for the new shooters. The match will require shooting a total of 40 silhouette targets. Ten chickens at 25 yards, ten pigs at 35 yards, 10 turkeys at 40 yards and ten rams at fifty yards. The targets are 3/8 scale which means the 25 yard chickens are about 3 inches tall and the 50 yard rams are about 8 inches tall. The match is shot off hand. People with physical disabilities can shoot from the bench in a bench class.
Bring the kids and spend a day at the range knocking over steel targets. Call me with ques-tions Jim Estes 248-709-5254.
