Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the Organizing Committee I have the honor and the pleasure to welcome you for the 20th Congress of the Romanian Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology.

Since its inauguration every year the congresses of our society has been offering many opportunities for the dissemination, discussion and debate of the new medical and scientific information for cancer treatment and care.

Gynecological cancers worldwide, and especially in Romania represent a real problem, unresolved until now, a reason for which our focus this year was the gynecologic cancers, in the management of which a multidisciplinary team is involved (gynecologist, medical oncologist, radiotherapist, pathologist, radiologist, and specialists from different research field, as well). In the last years there has been substantial progress: the new discoveries in viral carcinogenesis and the preparation of anti-HPV vaccine open extremely important perspectives for the prevention and diagnostic of genital cancers. The development of imagistic methods and molecular biology techniques have refined the characterization of these lesions and opened new therapeutic perspectives, which together with the progress of classical methods (surgical, radiological and medical treatments) permit the personalization of therapeutic strategies with survival improvement, superior than the previous decades.

I sincerely hope that the two pre-congress courses will be an excellent opportunity to learn about new developments in the field of oncology. We thank our exceptional faculty members, European-renowned experts in the field for dedicating their time and contributing with their competence to the effort towards improving cancer management in our country. On the occasion of this 2010 Congress, we would also like to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Romanian Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology since its foundation, offering a unique possibility for summing-up past research and for decisions regarding the future. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the program of our society meeting and I assure you that your participation would contribute greatly to the success of the Congress. Viorica Magdalena Nagy RSRO President
