his renowned colleagues, infusing students with love and enthusiasm

The Carey Institute for Global Good and Yehuda Hanani have teamed up to produce the 6th Annual Catskill High Peaks Music Festival which will take place from August 9-20, 2015 at the Institute. The Festival combines a Residency program for 50 hand-picked emerging artists from around the world with evenings of classical music concerts for the public.

The mission of Catskill High Peaks Festival is to infuse students with love and enthusiasm for their musical vocation, instill a spirit of musical adventure and discovery, and imbue an appreciation for past traditions.

Hanani and renowned colleagues provide a rigorous schedule of private coaching, public master classes and chamber music performance opportunities. String, piano and chamber music repertoire will be approached with allusions to literature, mythology, philosophy, art, nature and life – cultivating a scholarly and a passionately personal relationship with music.

This is accomplished through: immersion instrument instruction by Hanani and top-tier teachers and performers; creation of thematic concerts so that great works of the past come alive for the young musicians; and providing young artists with a broader cultural context, delving deeply into musical viewpoints to take students beyond the notes. Invariably during coaching, rehearsal and performance sessions, surprising and dramatic moments occur that reveal the nature of the artistic process.

Over the eleven days of the Festival public concerts will be held, affording our young artists the opportunity to try out works in progress, overcome stage fright and inhibitions, and “wow” their listeners.

Michael Chertock, a High Peaks faculty member for several years, says of the High Peaks program: “…Hanani intentionally fosters an atmosphere of collegiality and deep, searching musicianship. Lectures and presentations on relevant cultural topics add to the richness of the educational experience.”

Past years’ emerging artists have hailed from Malaysia, South Korea, Canada, Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Russia, Mexico, Iran, Austria, France and 40 different states within the United States. Each year brings new and different nationalities to participate.

In 2015, a new “Buddy Day” will be incorporated into the Festival’s schedule. Up to 30 students from musically underserved schools in both the Capital District and Kids 4 Harmony in Pittsfield will be paired with older, more experienced instrumental Residents for one-on-one lessons for violin, cello

and piano. Storytelling sessions, musically-themed outdoor games, a talk by the High Peaks faculty, and a performance will all be included in the “Buddy Day.”

The Carey Institute is located on a 100-acre campus capable of housing close to 100 people, and has its own craft brewery, farm to table restaurant and most importantly for the music festival, a state of the art performance hall with 175 seats and fine acoustics.

The cost to produce the Catskill High Peaks Music Festival is shared by the Resident. The Carey Institute for Global Good is seeking $50,000 annual support for this program.

YEHUDA HANANIBorn in Jerusalem, Hanani was brought to the United States

from Israel by Leonard Bernstein and Isaac Stern at the age of 19. He is an international soloist, recording artist, Israeli-American cellist and Professor of Violoncello at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Hanani is highly regarded as a teacher who has inspired a generation of young cellists. He has served on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory and presents master classes around the globe (including Juilliard, Paris Conservatoire, Hochschule fur Musik, among others).

He has been at the forefront of thematic programming and has directed the innovative chamber music series – Close Encounters With Music – (based in the Berkshires since 1992) in cities across the U.S. and Canada, and at the Frick Museum in New York. Major composers who have written works for him include Lera Auerbach, Robert Beaser, Kenji Bunch, Osvaldo Golijov, Jonathan Keren, Owen Leech, Jorge Martin, John Musto, William Perry, Bernard Rands and Paul Schoenfield.
