Alpine Style.Stephan Siegrist describes his recent tour on the north-west face of Cerro Kishtwar

We started out making our way over an ice field. This was followed by some mixed terrain and loose rocks. But the most strenuous aspect of all was the fresh snow! It took us until around midday to cross the berg-schrund. We were pleased when we managed to reach the plateau as planned.

We quickly set up the camp. The next morning, once Denis had the first few pitches behind him, the door to “Ali Baba and the forty thieves” opened: this was the line for our alpine-style attempt. The steepness of the couloir rose up to 85 degrees before flattening out again. After another two pitches, we came to a rocky section with a grade-6 rating. We finally came into the sun on the south ridge and were able to warm our feet. At 1.15 pm, we stood on the east summit. Reaching the summit is always a very emotional and exhilarating experience. Especially, when you can share this joy and fortune with good friends.

Pure adrenaline. The first ski descent of the west side of Shishapangma

Just the week before, the area had been hit by earthquakes and snowstorms. At the second base camp at 5,900 meters, the tents were ripped to shreds by crows. Sébas-tien’s skis, which he had left at the high-altitude camp at 6,500 meters, were carried away by an avalanche and he was forced to use his photographer Florian Wagner’s skis. Despite this, Sébastien decided to leave the base camp and make an attempt. He and his sherpas managed to climb above high-altitude camp 1 up to 7,000 meters where they set up high-altitude camp 2. They then had to hold out in the death zone – a great strain with no extra oxygen for the body! At six in the morning, Sébastien set off again. However, he was soon forced to concede that carrying on would be extremely dangerous. High snowdrifts were piled loosely on top of sheer ice and there was no way past. The likelihood of a fall would have become irresponsibly high with each step. So he put his skis on and got ready to head back down to the base camp. This spectacular descent on skis over 1,100 meters of altitude had never been achieved before and once again it took everything Sébastien had. Finally, he reached the bottom safely.

The Biggest Peak Project in History

150 peaks to celebrate our 150th anniversary. With the Biggest Peak Project in History, Mammut is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Mountaineers from all over the world have climbed 150 peaks on every continent. To round off the Peak Project, 300 international participants – Mammut fans, mountain guides and journalists came together to create a representation of the world map on the “Ewig Schneefeld” between the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

The stuff ofadventures.

Riding on thevolcano.Speed-flying from one of the most active volcanoes in the world

White steam, evil smelling smoke and bubbling lava. This was the setting for the highlight tour on Etna. In perfect weather, the speed-flyers Jody Barratin and Felice Boc-canegra climbed 3,323 meters up this active volcano and enjoyed a breathtaking view over the Mediterranean. The Italians then unpacked their paragliders and got ready for a fast-paced descent. With skis on their feet and paragliders on their backs, they made their way down using an adventurous combi-nation of skiing and flying. Congratulations and respect, Jody and Felice!

The Anniversary Book

To celebrate its 150th anni-versary, Mammut has compiled 150 stories by well-known authors on the subject of mountaineering and out-door sports. This unique collection of words and im-ages traces out the past and future of mountain sports.

Girls on Tour.Skiing from the summit to a beach barbecue

Lofoten, Norway. An unbelievable sequence of peaks and fjords. The Vikings settled in this area due to the plentiful sup-ply of fish. However, as well as fish, this area is also the loca-tion for some of the best ski tours and climbing areas Norway has to offer. The Norwegian mountain guide Truls korsaeth, Danish freerider Anja Bolbjerg and four curious and daring female Norwegian skiers set off to tackle the Geitgaljern. Their aim was to ski down from the highest peak in the Vågen area. And the team of six was lucky. They enjoyed a beautiful day with fresh powder snow and a blue sky. In addition to these perfect conditions, the skill of the skiing aces ensured a successful de-scent to the coast. On arrival at the bottom, the team gathered together for a barbecue with some freshly caught fish.

The “Dammkarwurm” lives on.120 ski touring fans and customers of Mammut stores wind their way up the Karwendel mountains

In the past, people came in droves to climb the karwendel Alps through the Dammkar. Images of the legendary “Dammkarwurm” are part of alpine history. More than 120 Mammut fans have now helped to resurrect the legendary “Dammkarwurm”. The wake-up call came at 3.30 am in the base camp, a local gym. After breakfast, the red and black ski touring caravan began the climb up to Dammkar: in twelve groups, each led by a mountain and ski guide from the Mammut Alpine School. By 8.30 am they had already reached their destination. Photographer Bernhard Schmid lined up the “Dammkarwurm” and got the photo in the bag.

Lanin Jacket MenThe intelligent use of GORE-TEX® Active Shell as well as a focus on essentials – with no adverse effect on its high func-tionality – make the Lanin Jacket Men one of the lightest ski touring jackets on the market.

Combination of extremes. An Alaskan expedition using only the strength of nature.

A two-and-a-half-month expedition through Alaska, involving a combination of five different sports and two cultures. Snow kiting, speed-flying, paragliding, ski touring/mountaineering and glacial traversing. Anything but a stroll (or flight) in the park in these extreme conditions. The vision was to achieve all goals using only the strength of nature. The greatest challenge was the summit of Mount Marcus Baker. Although it was not possible to use the kites for the summit run due to the extremely difficult conditions and “only” half of the team reached the summit, it was nevertheless a great success for the team and for the Peak Project as a whole when Obadiah and Greg reached the summit at 4,106 m on day 27 of the expedition.

Avalanche Airbags

The airbag for the mountains.Practical, safe and easy to operate: The user can install the R.A.S. Removable Airbag System in a R.A.S.-ready backpack and remove it when required. This allows you to use the backpack, for example, with the airbag for freeriding and without the airbag system on secured trails. In the event of an emergency, the airbag’s bright red color assists with rapid location.

Removable Airbag System R.A.S.In the event of an avalanche, a backpack with an integrated avalanche airbag can help to prevent complete burial and therefore increase chances of survival. The avalanche airbag has now become part of the standard safety equipment for activities away from secured trails. The Removable Airbag System R.A.S. uses the tried-and-tested Snowpulse Airbag Technology. The R.A.S. is a removable avalanche airbag system. It is designed to allow the user to remove it him or herself and fit it in any R.A.S.-compatible backpack.

Additional information can be found at www.mammut.ch/airbags

Ride short R.A.S. ready 20/28 l Our successful Ride R.A.S. model with a shorter back length

OperationIn the event of an avalanche, pulling the deployment handle releases the air from the high-pressure cartridge. The combination of compressed air and the Venturi effect inflate the airbag within 3 seconds. The ef-fectiveness of the avalanche airbag is based on the physical principle of “inverse segregation”. This sorting effect means that in an equally mov-ing mass of particles, the smaller particles gravitate to the bottom while the larger ones rise to the sur-face. The avalanche airbag increases the wearer’s volume, significantly boosting this effect. The avalanche airbag can therefore help to prevent complete burial. It also helps to keep the wearer’s head on the surface of the snow and its bright color makes it easier to be found.

Rocker R.A.S. ready 18 l Our most compact freeriding backpack. The Rocker R.A.S. is roomy enough to hold all the essential items for freeriding and is very comfortable to carry thanks to its close-fitting design

Pro R.A.S. ready 35/45 lThe avalanche airbag for professionals. This backpack is specially designed to meet the needs of mountain guides. Lots of room, a variety of attachments, multiple compartments, a large back opening and extremely robust construction

Protection R.A.S. ready 18 lOur only freeriding backpack with an integrated back protector and removable tailbone protector. Perfect positioning, maximum comfort and outstanding protection

Light R.A.S. ready 30 lThe Light R.A.S. is our featherweight among airbags. Maximum functionality despite a weight of around just 1.8 kg (without cartridge). Perfect for one-day tours

Non-refillable cartridge300 bar steelThe cartridge is an essential compo-nent of the avalanche airbag system and must be ordered separately. This cartridge is compatible with all Mammut or Snowpulse airbag systems (from winter 2011–2012). The cartridge is designed for one-off use and must be refilled after any deployment. Users can return the empty cartridge to the dealer and their deposit will be refunded

Ride R.A.S. ready 22/30 lThe perfect all-round backpack. The Ride R.A.S. is perfect for all-mountain and freeriding activities. As well as freeriding, the Ride R.A.S. is also ideal for one-day ski tours

AirbagWith a volume of 150 liters, the square airbag offers outstanding buoyancy.

DeploymentThe lightweight and compact system allows fast inflation. Easy, intuitive use. Rapid insertion of the cartridge.

Deployment handleThe lockable deployment handle is protected from snow and guarantees excellent functionality in all situations. Rapidly accessible and easy to stow.

David Lama on the Compressor route

The dream of Cerro Torre.David Lama has won the duel with Cerro Torre. On his third attempt, he became the first mountaineer to free-climb the Compressor route over the south-east ridge of Cerro Torre to reach the summit at 3,128 meters. “On January 19, Peter Ortner and I started our hike from El Chalten to Nipo Nino. We then climbed onto the shoulder to reach the start of the route at the bolt traverse, before immediately continuing to a more technically difficult edge, a few meters to the left of the ‘Salvaterra Crack’. A few pitches later, we reached the ‘Iced Towers’ where we decided to bivouac. The next morning, we came to the headwall. The fact that Hayden and Jason had removed bolts made my task even more challenging, with sparse protection forcing me to make long run outs. Making our way over loose flakes, we followed three pitches on the ‘Compressor route’. Around 20 meters below the Compressor, we traversed to the right and came to a system of cracks and grooves which we followed to the summit. Our alpine ascent from the col took us 24 hours.”

Mammut has marked the occasion of its 150th anniversary by deepening a very special commitment. Mammut is donating one percent of turnover from sales of its anniversary collection and Anniversary Book to fund actions car-ried out in partnership with the IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations), helping mountain and trekking guides in emerging na-tions such as Peru and kyrgyzstan to benefit from new Mammut equipment and sound training according to the IFMGA standard. As well as improving the situation in terms of equipment and training, Mammut also aims to create long-term income prospects for local mountain and trekking guides in Peru and kyrgyzstan. Peru has also been included as one of the destinations in the Mammut Alpine School program. The objec-tive is to attract more tourists and help mountain and trekking guides earn a regular income to support their families. However, our commitment to these countries, especially kyrgyzstan, began long before this and therefore Mammut can look back on several successes since 2007. These include the creation of a mountain guide association as well as a mountain guide training center in kyrgyzstan, campaigns for clearing and renovation projects for increased sustainability in the mountains.

Mammut is strengthening its commitment to sustainability and safety on the mountains all over the world. We care.
