Community blood drive set to replenish supplies usually donated by the military
United Blood Services is asking area residents to donate blood at the Abernathy EMS blood drive on Monday to honor our service men and women. Military personnel are typically faithful blood donors; however, many of them have not been available to donate for the commu-nity blood supply. ,
During World War II, civilians on the home-front were asked to step in for military personnel who were on assignment. Today , all eligible blood donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood at the Abernathy EMS blood drive, which will be held at Abernathy EMS Center from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
"By giving just one hour of your time, you can help save the lives of several patients here locally," said Connie
Hollinshead of United Blood Services. :'And at the same time, yo'u can do your part by honoring our South Plains area troops who are supporting the fight for enduring freedom."
Those returning from Iraq are unable to donate blood for 12 months after they come home because they may have been exposed to Leishmaniasis, a tick-borne infection that can be transmitted by blood transfusion , Hollinshead said.
To donate blood at the Abernathy EMS blood drive, you must be 17 years old or older, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors will receive their choice of a T-shirt or baseball cap. Donors must have a picture ID and a list of their medications that they are taking at the present time. All donors wiJI receive a box of Valentine candy.

UMC HEALTH SYSTF.M surrounding communities and provides Paramedic, .-.. t _ _ r......., Intermediate and Basic Medir;al Transportation Service.
Often a patient in need of specialized health care has difficulty traveling by conventional means. A service like EMS extends personal, expert care to each of their patients and offers ambulances that are equipped with advanced life services.
E~S is Medicare/Medicaid approved and accepts most private insurance, with proper information. We are !leased to feature EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES in our 200 Review and commend them for the service they bring to our Hale County communities.

sponsored by the Vatican 's Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care. The principal celebration for this year's World Day of the Sick will be held at the Shrine of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Yaounde , Cameroon, Mrica.
"World Day of the Sick aims to stimulate reflection on the subject of health, whose fullest meaning also alludes to the harmony of human beings with themselves and with the surrounding world. It is exactly this vision that Mrica richly expresses in its cultural tradition, testified to by many art forms, both civil and religious, that are bursting with joy, rhythm and musicality," said Pope John Paul, II, in a message on his web site.
