Maria Montessori Quotes
“The child is both a hope
and a promise for man-
kind.”
“Education is a natural
process carried out by the
child and is not acquired by
listening to words but by
experiences in the
environment.”
“To aid life, leaving it
free, however, to
unfold itself, that is
the basic task of the
educator.” “The hands are the
instruments of
man’s intelligence.” “Imitation is the
first instinct of the
awakening mind.”
“The child should
live in an
environment of
beauty.”

Issue 3, Week 5, Term 3 24 August 2012
August 23 is observed as the International
Day for the Remembrance of the Slave
Trade and its Abolition.
Slavery and Forced Labour came to South
Africa with the arrival of the colonist. Most
notably was the Dutch who brought slaves
to the Cape Colony from 1653 until 1822.
“The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in San-
to Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican
Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising
that would play a crucial role in the aboli-
tion of the transatlantic slave trade.
International Day for the Remembrance of
the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intend-
ed to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade
in the memory of all people.
“In accordance with the goals of the inter-
cultural project "The Slave Route", it should
offer an opportunity for collective consider-
ation of the historic causes, the methods
and the consequences of this tragedy, and
for an analysis of the interactions to which
it has given rise between Africa, Europe,
the Americas and the Caribbean. ” UNESCO
Believe it or not there is still slavery today.
For example there are sex slaves. Sex slaves
are young girls of 16 or younger who are
kidnapped and used for sex and sold for
money.
We the students of NHMMS know that
slavery and forced labour is wrong.
The Abolition of Slavery
Kate Muller from The Landmark Foundation
came to visit us on the 17th of Aug. The
Landmark Foundation is a NGO organisa-
tion that tries to preserve South Africa’s
ecosystem.
She came to talk to us about the dying sta-
tus of leopards in South Africa. She showed
us a gin trap that farmers us to catch leop-
ards or predators that come and eat their
sheep. Kate also showed us cameras that
they put up in leopard habitats to capture
images of them and to get a brief estimate
of the amount of leopards in the habitat. K
ate told us of the Fair Game project that
The Landmark Foundation is working on,
They are wanting to produce a range of
meat ,wool and mohair that are grown on
farms were no lethal predators are used .
At the end of the talk Kate introduced us to
two dogs used to protect the sheep from.
The whole class found the talk very in-
sightful and exciting.

Letter from the Editor
This week sees the launch of our first gardening column
from Graysen, which will become a regular feature, with
what plants to grow, according to the time of year.
I have also added a brain puzzle competition, so go puzzle
your brain for the chance to double your money! Fill in your
mini form, complete your puzzle then hand it into me with
you R5; at the end of the café we will draw the names from
a hat and reveal the winner! Thank you Geoff for this amaz-
ing new idea!
NHMMS are really getting excited about our new birthday
party enterprise, with new ideas every day. The party sched-
ules are ready, so please ask for them. Your child will never
forget the year they had two fun packed hours at NHMMS
with all their friends!
As always I really want to receive your comments, please
encourage your children to write a poem, story or letter to
me, so it can appear in The Weekly Breeze. Send it all to (as
well as your party bookings!)

Gardening Column By Graysen Shearer
On Wednesday this week the
gardening team decided to put pine
needles over the ground coming up
to NHMMS. Because its winter it’s
raining quite a lot and it makes the
path all muddy and sludgy so we
took pine needles from the forest
next to the path and spread it out
over the ground so people won’t slip
or get their shoes very muddy.
What should you think of planting
for summer?
You can get all sorts of plants from
Graysen’s nursery stand.
Here are a few: you could plant
some plectra this which like the
shade and some star and normal
jasmine and maybe some daisy
bushes, their daisies are very nice.
You can also get some ‘giants castle’
and ‘ferns’.
Recently Darryl and Zane went to
England, here’s what Darryl had to say:
“We took off for England on the 13th of
August, to go to compete in the Gil-
bert and Solomon festival in Buxton
(it’s so safe, clean and filled with
flowers there), in the play The Yeoman
of the Guard. 24 different plays
where competing in the festival
and The Yeoman of the
Guard came 2nd and we
won the prize of best
costumes. We stayed at a
youth hostel at university
of derby. Once we had
finished the competition
we went in to London for
