Fortunatelyno other damage was reported but itlends itself as a warning. The lack ofrain and subsequent dryness ofscrubland and forest areas is causinggrave concern to the forest fireprevention and fire fighting units.2012 is going to be a high risk year, somuch so that even from the middle ofMarch the controlled agriculturalburning has been prohibited within400 meters of a forest area. You areurged not to have barbecues in ruraland forest areas. If you do have onethen make sure you have a supply ofwater nearby, i.e. a hosepipe! Ifhaving a picnic then don’t leave glassbottles or cans behind, they can easilyignite tinder dry grassland. Avoidthrowing your fag ends out of the carwindow - apart from anything else,

♣EU Resident Certificates. With-out going on with a load of legalstuff, what has happened is that aLaw was passed on the 20th of Apriland published in the official StateBulletin and came into force on the24th of April. It is not animmigration Law but one to do withthe National Health system. Withinthis Law one of the dispositions hasmodified Article 7 of the RoyalDecree 240/2007 that sets out thepart of the ruling for an EU memberstate Citizen to reside in Spain for aperiod over 3 months. It nowstipulates that if you wish to residein Spain legally you should proveyou have an income and are notgoing to become a burden on thesystem. This left the foreignersoffice in Almeria (and probably allthe others) in a bit of a pickle as theyhad to commence to enforce a newregulation but with no guideline ofhow to do this, only being able toexplain to the EU residents going fortheir renewal or first time certificatethat all that they could do is acceptthe application and would get backto them in a few weeks. Now all EUmembers going for renewal musttake, apart from what waspreviously required; if they areretired, a Bank certificate statingthey receive a pension or similarincome, if they are working here a“Vida Laboral” - their workinghistory which is obtained from theSocial Security department. ♣The Government has announcedthat businesses in premises of lessthan 300 square metres can openwithout a licence. Presenting a‘responsible declaration’ in theTown Hall will be all that will beneeded according to a statementfrom the Deputy Prime Minister,Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría. Shesaid the move would ‘change theadministrative culture in the openingof small establishments, liberalisetrade, simplify the procedures, speedup paper work, and put out a redcarpet to entrepreneurs in a momentof crisis’. The business will be ableto open after the payment of thetaxes, and then it will be the TownHall who will revise that everythingis in order. Currently it can takebetween six and eighteen months toopen a business.♣14 municipalities in Almeríaprovince have said they oppose thedemolition of the EL Agarrobicohotel in Carboneras. The CarbonerasTown Hall considers the hotel willbring jobs and tourists to the areaand want it to be allowed to open.They have now passed a motionwhich calls on the central Govern-ment and the Junta de Andalucía to‘propose’ an agreement which willallow the completion of the hotelpromoted by the Azata del Solcompany. Their motivation is purelyeconomic and flies in the face of thedozens of judicial resolutionsagainst the hotel where work wasfirst stopped in 2007 when it was90% complete by an order of anAlmería judge, but the mostimportant sentence was issued bythe Supreme Court which ruled thatthe hotel invaded the public landalong the shoreline by some 100mresulting in a demand for the

demolition of part of the 20 floorstructure and 400 rooms. The PSOEhas presented 700 amendments tothe State Budget Law, and one ofthem is that the demolition of thehotel is carried out.♣The Guardia Civil want shortsleeves for the summer but theirbosses have said 'No'. The UnifiedAssociation of Civil Guards,AUGC, has complained that theywill have to work in the summer inlong-sleeved shirts, because theirsuperiors will not let them wearshort sleeves despite the hightemperatures of the summer whichcan reach over 40 degrees in someareas. They are demanding ‘auniform adequate for the ambienttemperature’. Recently in Lepe,Huelva a civil guard fainted becauseof the heat and crashed into anothercar – in this case the air condition-ing in the official vehicle he wasdriving was broken.♣The owner of a bar in Murcia hasbeen fined 6,000€ because one ofhis chairs was unable to support theweight of one of his clients. The FirstInstance Court in Totana initiallydismissed the case, but the man, whosuffered injuries in the accident, hasnow taken it to appeal to the MurciaProvincial Court. They ruled that “Achair should have sufficientresistance to support the weight ofany person”. It continued, “the manfell because the chair was not ableto sustain him and damages arevalid. Anyone who puts the serviceof a table and chair for their clientsis obliged to look after thismaterial”. The case dates back to2005 when the client sat on the chairand broke its legs, and it has takenthis long to reach the Murcia courton appeal!

My column is bigger thannormal this month, I havea lot to be excited about,

you see. Let’s crack on with it.I have a new toy. It’s the best toyI’ve ever had. It’s the new SamsungGalaxy S2. It’s a smart phone/righthand man/secretary and I ambeginning to wonder how I everlived without it.For some time I had been thinkingabout getting myself one of themi-phone thingies but, on realising, I’dbe tying myself into a contract inorder to get one I decided to browsethe market a bit.My final decision was swungenormously by my lifelong friend,Stan, who works for the Police as a“Forensic Computer Investigator”.There is not a man alive that knowsmore about things with a micro-chip and he guided me with thesewords. “Owning an i-phone is a bit

like renting one. It’s like it neverreally belongs to you because Applehave so much control over what youcan do with it.” That was all I neededto hear. Stan has a Galaxy S2 so Igot one.Now it’s not my job here at TheAdvertiser to be your shoppingconsultant. It’s my job to talk aboutwebsites and computers. TheGalaxy S2 is a computer andthrough the internet you candownload some wonderful features(Apps) for it. First of all it comes withSat-Nav as standard. This runs onthe same software as google earthand is available as ‘Map View’ or asPhotographic. It is excellent. Thesimilar app for i-phone is quiteexpensive where as on the Galaxy,it is free.By simply googling “free apps forandroid” (android is the name ofthe system upon which it operates)you will find thousands of excellentapps for your phone and many ofthem are free.The list of games is seeminglyendless but games aren’t really mybag. I’m not a big fan of computergames since Lara Croft hit meno-pause. I do admit to having a certainaddiction to something called AngryBirds though. A condition that I deal

with by trying to finish as manylevels a day as possible. I’m doingrather well too. It occurs to me nowthat there may be a linkthere…between Menopausal Laraand Angry Birds... Mmm, I wonder.My good friend Carla tried toimpress me recently with her oldstyle mobile phone by showing methe teeny weeny little torch it hasbuilt into it. A very useful thing, Iagreed as I unfolded the cover to myGalaxy S2 and proudly showed hermy NIGHT VISION!!! Oh yes NightVision. That was another free app.I have since found another app thatturns the phone’s camera flashlightinto a torch too which is very handyindeed.Another useful toy is the spirit leveland compass, many versions of thisare downloadable for free.Among the dozens of great apps I’veadded to my phone’s functionssince I bought it is one called“Translate” which converts anylanguage into any other and workswith typing and microphone too.That in my mind is pretty damnclose to Star trek technology.I have also added a guitar tuner thatworks better than any I ever boughtand another very useful free appwas the bar code scanner. It’s notmuch use for normal day to dayshopping but when buying some-thing a bit more pricey its veryhandy indeed. Whilst in a shop Isimply “bip” the bar code with myphone’s camara and it automaticallyscans the internet for me and showshow much the same item is beingsold for elsewhere. It has alreadysaved me 70 euros on a TV, thank

you very much.Another very useful app I found,called ‘Strava’ is for joggers andcyclists. It operates through yourtelephone’s GPS system andrecords statistics of all yourjourneys, giving periodic reports onyour speed, distance travelled andeven calories burned. If you want,it will post your results directly toyour Facebook wall so all yourfriends can see how hard you trainallowing you to use peer grouppressure to get your lazy arse on theroad regularly and, in my experi-ence, if there is nothing good ontelly… it works.That moves me smoothly on to avery useful website I have beenusing lately. It’s for all you “Free-sat” users. The site iswww.freesat.co.uk and part of thesite’s arsenal is the most easilyreadable TV guide I’ve seen. Downthe left column is a list of all thechannels available on satellite TVand to the right is what is on for theday. Its layout is organised as atimeline rather than channel bychannel so it offers a very easy viewof what’s on and when. Don’t forgetto add an hour though campers. Itis a UK based site.That’s all for this month except tothank my dear friend Sonia forhaving read my last article andsuggesting a very appealing use forbutter that I had never, hitherto,considered… Naughty girl.I should also like to congratulateCarla on throwing that silly old thingaway and buying herself a brandnew shiny Samsung Galaxy S2.

There is nothing like being outin the hot sun to wreck yourhair. Whether you arespending a relaxing day at thebeach, out in the garden, orplaying with your kids, the suncan really do a job on your hair.This is known as oxidisation,and it is the same process thatput those nice blonde high-lights in your hair as a teenager. However, what it is really doing isdamage to your hair - the reason your hair got lighter is that the hairshaft was damaged and couldn't hold its original pigment. Add tothat chemical processes like perming and colouring, as well asstyling processes like using hair strighteners and blow-drying, andan afternoon in the sun can ruin the great hair you've worked (andpaid) so dearly for. But you certainly don't need to hide in the houseto keep your great hair, just follow these steps:

Get a good hat. Seems simple, but it's your best line of defencein protecting your hair. If you can put your hair up and truly cover allof it with the hat, all the better. If you are looking to protect yourskin as well, get a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face.

Put conditioner in your hair as a barrier. You can either choosea standard deep conditioner, or go for a truly deep conditioningtreatment. Some women, especially in Europe, use coconut oil - athick, deeply hydrating oil - to slick back their hair when they aregoing to be in the sun. Other oils to try are jojoba oil, sunflower oil,

safflower oil, even olive oil. You can even try mixing a few oilstogether. If you have a favourite deep conditioner or hot oiltreatment, look for the oils in that, and you will get a sense of whereto start. The heat from the sun will drive the oils deep into your hairshaft. While it won't protect your hair from all damage, it is soconditioning that it repairs your hair before it can get too straw-like.

Look for styling products with a built-in sun protection factor(SPF). A lot of styling products - even hairsprays - have SPF in them.Bear in mind that products which contain alcohol can dry your hairout even faster in the sun, so unless your hair needs to be styled,avoid products containing alcohol, or any other substance thatwould typically dry out hair. Also be aware that the SPF will washout if you go swimming or sweat - the same rules that apply tosunscreen on your face apply here.

If your hair is long try putting it in a French twist as less of yourhair will be exposed to the sun to be damaged. Remember that youdon't want the hair closest to your scalp - the healthiest hair on yourhead - to get damaged.

If your hair is short, find some cute bandannas. Wrap themstarting at your hairline like a headband, and leave the pointed endcovering the rest of your hair. If you have a square scarf, that worksfine. Just make sure the fabric is thick enough to not let sun through.

although we were the only country

that couldn’t laugh at the Russian

grannies, given that our entry was

even older than they were! Spain

came 10th, good news for the TVE

bosses who had ordered Pastora

Soler to throw the contest in order

to avoid the expense of putting on

Eurovision next year.

� Talking of “camp entertainment”

� Margaret. Rhodes, the 86 year

old cousin and intimate friend of

Queen Elizabeth II was in hospital

at Huercal Overa after suffering a

fall whilst staying in Alfaix, Los

Gallardos. She recently had a hip

op and doctors say she is fine but

under observation. She was

reported to be in fine health, and a

model patient according to

admiring local doctors.

� Researchers from the University

of Almeria have developed a

system to analyse the amount of

livestock drugs in babyfood

preparations, and have been

surprised at the findings of the new

system. The quantities are very

small, but in milk powder and in

meat-based baby food, residues of

drugs given to livestock were

found, confirm the University.

� Moors and Christians on the

weekend of the 15th-17th of June

in Mojácar! It’s the annual bash,

with the landing, wonderful parade

up to the village and symbolic

taking of the town. If you haven’t

been, it’s worth the trip!

� Karen Dee, the “voice of

Benidorm”, is playing up at

Miraflores on the 9th of June, in

an evening BBQ event that usually

attracts a couple of hundred

the 30th of the month, he will be

entertaining outside as well.

On a beautiful Sunday 6th May the first Bay Radio ¨Be Nice Day¨ inconjunction with The Fundraiser charity shops, was held, with venuesfrom Valencia to Mojácar Playa.The aim was to raise as much money as possible for worthy charities.Caritas, was the main, national charity, receiving 15% of the totalraised, and the remainder split in each area between local charities. Inthe case of the Costa Almeria, this was divided between Asprodalba,AECC and Animo, an organisation based in Almeria, which uses horseriding as a means of therapy for disabled children.The events kicked off with a 5km walk along the Paseo on Mojácar Playafrom the Irish Rover, and also on Vera Playa, from the Blue Parrot, withwalking ages ranging from 6 months to 84 years. Our first finisher wasCarol Carter, but no official time was recorded, 11 year old Frankiecompleted the 5km on her roller blades and Sharon and Daz of TheChippy, Vera (advert on page 6) who had been actively raising fundsfor the event carried on walking to a distance of 12km and together withFundraiser volunteers raised over 100€.The day continued with live entertainment from Stacey, Ashley &Damius, Paul AKA Betty Swollocks, Lady Ellen, NuLine Line Dancers,Zumba with Julie Bruce and Get Fit, Stay Fit Alison from Indigo Gym,and DJ Ian.Many thanks go out to all those who participated on the day, theentertainers, and of course, the two venues who graciously gave theirtime, to make the day such a huge success.Although, all the monies have not yet been received, we are currentlylooking at a figure in excess of 1500€, and we hope that this will be thefirst, of many annual ¨Be Nice Days¨.

Secure boundaryrecommended as he is athletic and agood jumper. May escape (thoughalways came back). Travels well in thecar though may bark at other dogsthrough the window. Walks well on leadand was friendly when met other dogsout walking. He may take objects andchew them, i.e. lead, remote, cloths,shoes, etc., so will need management inthis area. He tends to do these thingswhen bored and not stimulated. Needsregular exercise. Not anxious whenfosterers left home. Very people friendlyand likes attention. Is used to sleeping inthe house. Was observed to be clean inthe house though started scent markingas he got older. Enjoys playing in thegarden.

TABERNA - This tall greyhound is beautifuland statuesque. A lovely dog, she is easy forher caretakers to handle and manage. Whilstfriendly with people she can be dominantwith other dogs; at mealtimes she may try tokeep other dogs away from their food, or evensnap at them. Therefore we suggest if she ishomed with other dogs that she is fedseparately.

ODIN - is a happy and friendly dogand he loves to come and cuddle withyou. He enjoys the company of hiskennel mates and is very playful withthem. He just loves to run and go forwalks and we always let him have agood run in the large play area beforetaking him for a walk to let him burn offsteam. He’s just born to run! Odin enjoyslife and loves to explore his surroundingsby sniffing and checking everything out. It has been observed that he does notlike cats, so we would strongly advise that he is not homed with cats.

REINA - Described by the kennel manager as, "areally nice and gentle dog", Reina has been notedto be well-behaved with all other dogs she hascome into contact with, both in her kennels and inher play group. She is generally a quiet dog and isnot pushy; not one to rush forward to greet youthrough the sea of dogs at the shelter, she caneasily be overlooked by visitors. However, once itis her turn and she gets to meet you she enjoyshuman company and especially likes to be cuddled.

As I haven’t got much to tell youfishing-wise for this month I’ll tellyou about an unrelated catch. Butfirst I can say that a 110lb tuna wascaught from the shore by a Spanishfisherman but I can’t get a photo toshow, shame. Apart from that onlybream, mullet and a few palometeshave been caught as far as I know.The boat Capitanos haven’t reportedanything big being caught but thereare a few big fish jumping, marlin,swordfish and the like and the sunfishare back showing themselves andthat’s always a good sign. Some goodoctopuses have been boated and Ibelieve most have been taken home.I have a great recipe for octopus, boilone whole for 4 hours with a kilo oflarge pebbles from the shore. Whenthe time is up throw the octopusaway and eat the pebbles!Large dolphin pods have been about,mainly showing between the harbourentrance and opposite the Repsolgarage.Course fishing is picking up withmatches on Lake Argos and the RiverSegura in Murcia weighing in up to85lbs.I netted a nice seagull this morning!A baby one not long out of the nest.I wondered if it was one of George’sor Steven’s babies? (You know, ourregular companions at sea, Georgeand Steven Segal as we named them)Anyway me and ‘Chef Jeremy’ wereout with and on ‘Orca Steve’s’

Garrucha based fishing boat and aftera pretty useless day’s fishing thebottom we trolled along the rocks infront of the harbour wall. Stevespotted ‘Lucky Segal’ as I’ve namedhim, wings wide apart trying to stayafloat on the sea’s surface. He wassoaked and wasn’t going anywhere.We brought in our lines and wentback and netted him on the way past.I left him in the net and in the sunwhile we finished just one more troll(as you do). When we got back to themarina I put him on the boat nextdoor with some prawns and a Spanishboat owning neighbour threw him asardine. He really was not well andluckily for him Steve went onboard tohave a better look as he wasn’t eventrying to stand up. He not only hadone foot missing but had fishing linetied tightly around his other leg and itwouldn’t have been long (if he hadn’tdrowned first) until he lost this footalso. Steve managed to cut the lineoff and ‘Lucky’ soon began to recoverin the sun, preening himself (we havepresumed it’s a male) and even atethe sardine without any prompt.That was the last we saw of ‘Lucky’

but hope he makes it, it certainly madeus three feel good as we did our bit fornature.The Albox fishing club meets everytwo weeks or so at Bar Wassy. PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

FRIDAY 15th JUNE: Medieval Market opens at 12 mid-day• 9.30pm, gathering of blunderbuss firers in Multiple Uses centre.• 10pm, regrouping of troops at the public fountain.• Moorish king hands over the key to the city to the Christian king.• 10.30pm ascent to the village from the public fountain, announcing thepresence of hostile troops close to the city. The groups gather, presidedover by their respective captains, accompanied by bands, fireworks andmusket fire.• 11pm entrance of the troops in the village. This is followed by thetraditional opening of the fiesta, with junior and adult ambassadors, andfirecrackers.• Midnight, opening of troops’ encampments, presided over by theambassadors and accompanied by music bands. Fiesta until the earlyhours.SATURDAY 16th JUNE• 4.30pm concentration of blunderbuss firers at the Descargador beachin front of Hotel Provenzal.• 6pm Descargador beach, procession of horses and exhibition of horse-manship. Confrontation between Moorish and Christian troops withshots from land and sea, interrupted by a belly dancing show, andfollowed by a Medieval tournament, where Moorish and Christian knightsattempt to win the highest number of scarves put up by the ladies fromboth sides. The troops then march to the Parque Comercial, accompaniedby entertainers.• 10pm in the village, opening of encampments and fiesta until the earlyhours.SUNDAY 17th JUNE• 12 mid-day in Mojácar Playa, gathering of Moorish and Christianfusiliers and firing of blunderbusses along the beach.• 7pm in the Pueblo, PROCESSION OF MOORS & CHRISTIANS IN GALACOSTUMES AND ARMED, ACCOMPANIED BY MUSIC BANDS AND WITH AGREAT DEAL OF POMP AND CEREMONY.
