Sand and sandbags are being loaded and read-ied for delivery to Wasa as Wasa Lake continues
to rise in the midst of heavy rain.
“The RDEK will be delivering sand and
sandbags to the Wasa Community Hall this evening for residents to ll,” explains RDEK Information Of cer, Loree Duczek.
The Lake has been ris-ing at a rate of about 1” per hour all day and the
latest forecast for today is calling for between 40mm and 60mm of rain by midnight. The nearby Kootenay River is also rising, and is cre-ating a back ow, which is also contributing to the high water levels in
the Wasa area.Currently, three prop-
erties on the south end of the lake are being af-fected by ooding.
“We are encouraging residents and property owners in Wasa who are near the water to ensure
valuables are moved out of basements, and take steps to prevent belongings from being affected by oodwater,” adds Duczek.
If the situation contin-ues to worsen and any-one feels they can’t stay
in their homes, they can contact Carol Lind at 250-420-1917 regard-ing Emergency Social Services assistance.

Representatives of the BC Teachers’ Fed-eration signed an agree-ment-in-committee with government’s bargain-ing agent, the BC Pub-lic School Employers’ Association. The BCTF Executive Committee is recommending rati ca-tion.
“After a long and dif- cult round of nego-
tiations, we were com-pelled into this process under threat of huge nes and further puni-
tive legislation,” said BCTF President Susan Lambert.
“We have been able to achieve some mod-est improvements but, above all, we succeeded in getting government take its concession de-mands off the table,” Lambert said, adding that no other public sec-tor union was subject to such an attack on due process and fair treat-ment.
“We’ve concluded this agreement in order to prevent government from imposing a con-tract that would further erode teachers’ hard-won rights and do more harm to students’ learn-ing conditions,” Lam-bert said.
The agreement leaves important matters unre-solved. The agreement provides for no im-provements to class size and composition. De-spite the BC Supreme Court ruling that Bills 27 and 28 are uncon-stitutional and invalid, government refused to redress this legislation, which stripped teachers’ collective agreements, restricted their bargain-ing rights, and eliminat-ed provisions for class size and composition, as well as staf ng ratios for specialist teachers who served students with special needs.
Lambert emphasized
that BC teachers will never give up advo-cating strongly for the funding, resources, and conditions that will en-able them to meet the needs of all students.
The agreement does nothing to address the wide gap between BC teachers’ salaries and those in other regions of the country. BC teach-ers had wage freezes, which are, in fact, wage cuts due to in ation, imposed in 2004–05 and 2005–06, and now again for 2011–12 and 2012–13.
Going into this round of negotiations we were the lowest-paid teach-ers in Western Canada and also lagged behind Ontario. Now we will fall even further behind, despite living in the province with the high-est cost of living in the country,” Lambert said.
“We are required to open negotiations again in just eight months, and we will once again be looking for fair treat-ment at the bargaining table and long awaited improvements for our members and our stu-dents,” Lambert said.
Teachers across the province will have cast their ballots this week with results of the rati- cation vote to be an-
nounced in the evening of June 29, the last day of the 2011–12 school year.

One million hectares of B.C. forest land may need to be replanted to help them recover from widespread re and bark beetle problems, according to a new re-port from the B.C. gov-ernment’s Forest Prac-tices Board.
The report estimates the entire area that may need replanting at two million hectares, out of the 95 million hectares of total forest land in B.C. But about 500,000 hectares of that is the legal responsibility of the forest companies that logged it, and the government has plans
in place to replant an-other 250,000 hectares.
“Decisions about whether to replant areas where mountain pine beetle and res have killed most of the trees will have an impact on the future timber sup-ply,” board chair Al Gorley said. “At a min-imum, if nature is left to take its course, the eventual crop of timber in those areas will be delayed.”
The board, an inde-pendent watchdog of the B.C. government, is critical of the way
the government de nes “not satisfactorily re-stocked” forest land. The de nition only ap-plies to areas designat-ed for timber harvest.
Even within this 22 million-hectare timber supply area, there are large areas affected by re or pests, but the
report notes that the ministry’s survey data on these areas are not suf cient to be certain of their tree survival or recovery.
“There has been only a limited amount of reforestation effort di-rected at mature beetle-affected forests because those areas might still be harvested by the for-est industry,” the report says.
The ministry an-nounced regulatory changes Tuesday to promote salvage of wood waste for produc-ing wood pellets and other “bio-products,” including electricity, fuels, plastics, solvents, lubricants and food ad-ditives.
The regulations are aimed at providing ac-cess to smaller trees, tops and branches that are piled at logging sites and roads when sawlogs are taken out. They authorize new salvage licences that do not allow the harvest of standing trees.
More forest replantation needed

Last December Su-zanne Struthers from the Giant Steps Preschool decided to honour one of her student’s mother, Lisey Lalonde, one of the faces of the A Clear View ~ digital mam-mography campaign by starting a poinsettia fundraiser that brought in over $530 during De-cember.
Struthers and the pre-schoolers’ efforts haven’t stopped there with various activities and encouragement to friends and family the
Giant Steps Preschool has since made an addi-tional two gifts bringing their trio of fundraisers to a total of $1,125.
“In a campaign that is focused on raising a million dollars, it is so rewarding to see indi-viduals and groups that realize that every penny counts and makes a dif-ference. It is not the size of a gift but in the giving that will make the A Clear View a suc-cess,” explains Donna Grainger of East Koo-tenay Foundation for Health.
Golden’s Lisey La-
londe recently shared, “Being involved with this campaign has given me the chance to say thanks. Thanks to ev-ery doctor, nurse, thera-pist, pharmacist, vol-unteer and donor that help make every breast cancer patients’ journey easier.”
From Golden to the Elk Valley, Creston to Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook and all those little towns in between the ability to bring the best in breast cancer screening and diagnos-tics to the East Koote-nay Regional Hospital will become a reality. With over $820,000 in pledges and donations please consider help-ing EKFH reach its $1 million fundraising goal early, donate today atw-ww.aclearview.ca.

College of the Rock-ies’ Hairstylist program was host to a special guest on June 20. Red-ken 5th Avenue NYC artist Salina Khan spent the day with students, introducing them to the latest trends and giving them the opportunity for hands-on experience with Redken’s newest colour line.
Redken is regarded as one of the premier com-panies in the ‘world of hair’ and is focused on education and quality.
Instructor Gwen Stew-art commented, “This was an exciting oppor-tunity for our students. They will be the rst to use the new colour line which represents a whole new science and is healthier for our cli-ents and for the environ-ment.”
In addition to College
of the Rockies students, Stewart invited profes-sional stylists from the East Kootenay area to take advantage of this unique opportunity to update their product knowledge. “It’s great to be able to share this training with stylists in the region. It’s so im-portant to keep on top of the latest innovations in the hairstyling industry,” added Stewart.

Caution and Common Sense Urged As Fawning Season BeginsResidents are encouraged to exercise both caution and common sense this spring, as the fawning season approaches for deer. Late May through June is historically the time of year does give birth to their fawns. Does will drive away their offspring from the previous year and look for a secluded place to give birth. If you come across a fawn, it is best to leave it alone. It is also important for residents to remember that does with fawns can be quite aggressive. The City of Cranbrook has an information brochure, “Living with Urban Deer”, which is available for pick up at City Hall or by downloading a copy from the City’s website – www.cranbrook.ca.

When Canadian athletes go for the medals at the London Olympics in a month, they will be proudly displaying the maple leaf as a symbol for their nation on their clothes. This weekend, ordinary Canadians will likewise wave fl ags and wear maple leaf pins, hats, T-shits and other decorations to show their pride. At home and around the world, nothing says Canada like the maple leaf, so this week, this column will be dedicated to the maple tree in honour of our nation’s 145th birthday.
Whether you are looking for stunning fall colour or a showy variegated leaf - there is a maple for you. Maple trees are usually very easy to grow and provide you with years of shade, landscape interest and quick growth. Most people think that all maples get very tall and very wide, but maples, like most other trees come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Generally speaking, maples will grow anywhere from 14-36 inches in a season. You will get a faster growing, happier and healthier tree if good soil amendments are used, along with bone meal and transplant fertilizer at the time of planting.
Provide the tree with consistent regular moisture for the fi rst three years of its life, along with a regular fertilizing program. It is necessary to stake any newly planted tree for two years and this is especially true of a maple tree. Since they are fast growing trees, they benefi t from the additional stability that staking provides until the tree has established itself in the ground. Maples are generally free of most pests and disease. While they may occasionally be bothered by aphids or leaf rollers, this is not a common problem.
Maples vary in hardiness level. There are many showy and attractive maples we can grow here in the Kootenays. One of the taller maples that is extremely hardy and a great choice as a shade tree, privacy tree or even as an accent is the Autumn Spire Maple. Just like its name sake, the Autumn Blaze Maple, it is noted for the most stunning blaze-red fall colour. It will achieve a height of approximately 50 feet and maxes out on spread at about 26 feet, giving it a slightly columnar appearance. It has stunning and showy red fl owers that appear in spring before the leaves open on the tree. And, of course, the medium green lobed foliage turns a brilliant red in the fall.
The Prairie Splendor Maple is another tree known for its hardiness (to Zone 3). This well-shaped tree has a naturally oval structure and it will reach about 33 feet in height and 26 feet in width. Its most striking feature is the bright, maroon-red foliage all season long and it has small, but showy yellow fl owers in spring. This maple is rather slow-growing, so it would be a good choice for a street planting.
Another tree that is eye-catching year-round is the Silver Variegated Maple which - as the name implies - is denoted by its variegated foliage. Its average height is 40 feet tall and 25 feet wide. Be careful to choose the right site for this maple, however, because if it is planted in an area that does not get a lot of snow cover, additional water protection may be required to prevent the tree from budding out earlier in spring than desirable. This maple’s fall colour is a bright yellow that stands out against the red colours of autumn.
Another maple that has striking foliage all year round is the Crimson Sentry Maple with its leaves maturing from bright red in the spring to almost purple in the fall. This tree reaches an average height of 25 feet tall and will be only about 16 feet wide. It is a wonderful and attractive choice for an area where you need an upright, narrow, columnar tree but want to have something more showy than a poplar or aspen.
So be proud of being Canadian this July 1st and plant a maple tree, whether it is green, yellow, orange or red and show off the pride you feel for your country.
Till next time… happy Canada DaySubmitted by Tara

Cranbrook’s Canada Day
The streets of Invermere will soon be lled with oats and the skies will
be alive with explosions of celebratory light dis-plays as the Mountain Mosaic Festival of the Arts kicks off. The free family event takes place alongside the District of Invermere’s Canada Day celebrations, and will pick up right after the parade down Main Street on July 1st. The parade, which is organized by the Royal Canadian Le-gion Branch #71, begins at 11 a.m. and the festivi-ties begin down at Kins-men Beach at noon.
The night before, June 30th, at midnight, the skies will be the palette for a fantastic reworks display put on by the Kinsmen Club of Wind-ermere Valley. To get a good vantage point for
the reworks, make your way down to the Ed-die Mountain Memorial Arena, and look up. It just might be a night you won’t soon forget.
Then, after the parade on July 1st, make sure you head down to Kins-men Beach where the Columbia Valley Arts Council has a myriad of activities, events and en-tertainment for the whole family.
The Home Hardware sponsored entertainment stage will be featuring performances by De-siderata Dance Studio, Paulo, the Invermere Irish Dancers, Norma Macdonald and Steven Bowers and Lulu the Clown. Activities and kiosks throughout the grounds will include the Transformation Station, a Black Star Studios sponsored Mosaic Sta-tion, the Purcell Moun-tain Painters, Ground-swell Garden, bubbles and hula hoops, rock painting, the Panorama Bounce Castle and the ever-popular Cops for Kids boat-building con-test and race.
“We anticipate large crowds again at this year’s Mountain Mosaic Festival,” Kim Turgeon, Event Organizer, said. “The event is gaining in popularity year after year. We are committed to offering free enter-tainment for the whole family as they enjoy the Canada Day long week-end. So come on out, rain or shine, and celebrate Canada Day with us.”
Funding partners for the Mountain Mosaic Festival of the Arts in-clude the Columbia Ba-sin Trust, Bob and Barb Shaunessy, Panorama Mountain Village, and CV Arts.

July 1 is a day of celebration across the country, as Canada Day parties take over backyards and city parks. This date corresponds with the cre-ation of the Canadian confederation through the British North America Act, which took effect on July 1, 1867. It is a moment in time stamped with the values we hold dear.
We often hear that Canadians believe strongly in the importance of defending their values on the international scene. But what are Canadian values, exactly? Let’s zoom in on a few of those that seem to be embodied in the works of our artists, scientists, athletes, govern-ments, and great minds.
The main value we see re ected there is respect of universal human rights. Since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was issued, and right up to the more recent Convention on the Rights of the Child, Canada has been on the front lines in the ght to
win an international consensus on the freedom and dignity of the individual. It follows that Canadians are seen as staunch supporters of women’s and children’s rights.
Democratic traditions are also very important to Canadians. The develop-ment of a pluralist and participative civil society is strongly encouraged in Canada—that means we are seri-ous about allowing the expression of diverse opinions and offering all citizens the possibility and means of participating in the life of their com-munity and their country.
In economics, Canada is among the great defenders of the rule of law. Canadians want their govern-ments and corporations to play by the rules in the business world, and generally support clear and trans-parent regulations along with both scal and environmental responsi-
bility.
Canada Day is a good time to think about Canadian values

SENIORS’ DAY
By Timothy Schafer
Starting July 1 For-tisBC residential elec-
tricity customers will be dealing with a new residential conservation rate on their bill that
rewards people with lower rates for lower usage, in icting a little more pain for higher current consumption.
The provincial power company is establish-ing a two-level rate structure next month, offering a lower rate
for the rst block of electricity used by resi-dential customers, and a higher rate for use that exceeds the rst block threshold.
The move was predi-cated earlier this year by a decision from the BC Utilities Commis-sion to implement this type of rate, said Neal Pobran, Fortis BC cor-porate communications advisor, in a press re-lease Friday.
“FortisBC was direct-
ed by the BC Utilities Commission to imple-ment this type of rate which is intended to encourage conserva-tion and support our customers to use less electricity,” he said. “The new rate is de-signed to recover the same amount of rev-enue from residential customers in total.”
The change means the basic monthly cus-tomer charge drops almost $1 to $29.65
(from $30.52), while the charge per kilowatt hour—up to 1,600 kilo-watt hours of electricity used over a two-month billing period—sits at 8.258 cents, jumping to 12.003 cents for elec-tricity used above that amount.
That rst 1,600 kWh block of electricity used every two months will be billed at a lower rate than the current Fortis-BC at rate. However, rates for commercial,
wholesale, lighting and irrigation customers will remain the same.
As well, the aver-age FortisBC elec-tricity customer uses 2,100 kWh every two months—500 kWh over the rst tier—will see no signi cant changes to their monthly cost of electricity under the residential conserva-tion rate.

Long time organizers of Mopars in the Moun-tains Car Show Mike and Donna Stanko, said in January of this year that the ever-popular classic car show would not be going ahead un-less new volunteers came forward. The Koo-tenay Child Develop-ment Centre has come forward and will now take the steps to ensure that the “Show Will Go On.”
The Kootenay Child Development Centre team saw taking over the Mopars Car Show as a wonderful opportunity for an annual fundraiser for the Centre that would help raise funds to en-hance their programs and services.
This year the team has added a few new details such as an extra Drive In Movie Night and are also offering businesses the opportunity to set up booths at the event. This year’s movies include Grease and Cars 2. They are also working with the downtown business association to offer par-ticipants a cruise of their cars downtown and a bbq during Friday night’s registration, which this year will take place at the Kootenay Child De-velopment Centre.
Admission to the car show will be by dona-tion. The Drive In Movie Night will be $5 per per-son or $20 per car load. The cost to participate in the Car Show will be $20 and to be part of the “Junk in Your Trunk Swap Meet” on Friday night, the registration cost is $10. For addi-tional details about the event, please visit the website at www.mopars-inthemountains.com.
The vision of the Kootenay Child Devel-opment project is the creation of a hub of co-located health and de-velopment services for children from birth to 19 years that will be in a central location and eas-ily accessible. Services include Pediatricians, Infant Development program, Supported Child Development pro-gram, Interior Health Children’s Assessment Network, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, East Koote-nay Child Care Resource and Referral, Children First, and Kids Con-nection Preschool. The new Centre also houses a large boardroom with telehealth video confer-encing capability, that will help reduce the
amount of travel many families currently face when having to take trips out of our region to access these services. To date the fundraising committee has raised over 1 million dollars, just shy of their 1.1 mil-lion dollar goal.
In past years, cars shown at Mopars in the Mountains have hailed from Washington, Ida-ho, Montana, East and West Kootenays, and Southern Alberta. There will be a fantastic vari-ety of vehicles so be sure to bring your camera as you walk down memory lane.
There will be great food (this year’s conces-sion will be run by the Cranbrook Bugle Band), great music and great people to help make your experience a great one! The Mopars in the Mountains has become a tradition in the East Kootenay and the Koo-
tenay Child Develop-ment Centre fundraising team is happy to be able to carry on the tradition.
There are many par-
ticipant bene ts - each vehicle owner will have the opportunity to win prizes, trophies and cash awards. Don’t forget to
pre-register online to get your name in the early bird draw.
To be successful the Mopars in the Moun-
tains requires a coalition of partners; sponsors, vendors and above all the public. Come out July 20th and 21st to
show your support. All proceeds from this event will go towards the Koo-tenay Child Develop-ment Centre.
Mopars in the Mountains car show will go on as scheduled

OBITUARYLanna Henson
(nee Dase)November 11, 1955 - June 24, 2012
On the afternoon on June 24, 2012 Lanna passed away peace-fully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer.Lanna owned the Kootenay Treehouse with her husband John for 14 years and worked for Golden Life for 11 years managing the Garden View Senior Community in Kimberley until March 2010. She always enjoyed working with the
seniors and staff there.Lanna was a kind, compassionate and generous lady, who always saw the best in everyone. Her courage over the last few months was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her passions were reading and her garden, with poppies and sunflowers everywhere in the summer. At Lanna's request, there will be no funeral. There will be an informal Celebration Of Life on Friday, June 29, 2012 between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook.
Lanna's Thank You'sI can't say how much I have appreciated all the lunches and visits from my friends over the past few months, espe-cially my girls from Garden View. A special thank you to Dr. Pieterse for all his care and compassion - an outstanding man and doctor - and to his wonderful staff at the Tamarack Medical Centre.....Roxanne, Susan, Sheilah, Pat and Leah for being so thoughtful, and Christina from palliative care for doing more than I ever asked for. Thanks to Jennifer for always being just a phone call away whenever we needed you. To Johnny, what can I say, you always believed in me, even when I doubted myself, thank you for 20 years of adventure; it was never boring with you. Goodbye Brat. I Love You. Lanna

OBITUARYDiane Phyllis Steenson
1941 - 2012It is with great sadness that we announce Diane Phyllis Steenson of Cranbrook, British Columbia passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the Kelowna General Hospital after a heart breaking battle with ARDS at 70 years of age.Diane was born on September 15, 1941 at the Kimberley District Hospital. She lived to volunteer and help others. Diane married Bill Steenson on September 22, 1962 and became an avid hockey fan of the Kimberley Dynamiters, Kimberley Knights and the
Kootenay Ice. She was a billet family for the Kootenay Ice Hockey Club, took in exchange students from the College Of The Rockies and volunteered for Big Brothers and Big Sisters locally also. Diane joined citizens on patrol, was a member of the fly fishing club, had a love of animals, espe-cially shiatsu dogs and horses. She loved to cook and made wonderful preserves. Diane also spent time catering and caring for elderly people within the community preparing Meals On Wheels and volunteering as a Welcome Wagon representative.Diane worked for the Workers Compensation Board until her retirement, and then worked for the Canadian Mental Health Association. She again retired only to take up employment as the Owner/Operator of D & B Flagging and Traffic Control. She was never a woman to sit still!Diane enjoyed cooking, volunteering, fishing and loved to travel. Diane helped others without giving it a second thought. She was a loving wife, mother and friend; a won-derful person who was always helpful and giving - doing things for others before ever thinking of herself. She never asked for a favour in return for anything she did.Diane is survived by her son Len (Dena) Steenson and sis-ters Ileane (Gordon) Sampert, Shirley (Bert) Hoppler. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, step-sister Isabelle, step-brother Leonard and her parents Archie and Robina.Diane, you will be sadly missed by so many.
