More Tools to Better Train You
As a CHEK Exercise Coach, I have been trained to test core strength and detect muscular imbalances with measurements such as thoracic curve, lumbar curve, first rib angle, etc. This information allows me to create exercise programs tailored to my clients’ needs. I have also been offering holistic lifestyle coach-ing which consists in assessing nutrition, sleep and wake cycles,
digestion, fungus/parasites and stress levels. A few months ago, I flew to San Diego California
and completed the CHEK Practitioner Level One cer-tification, which is the next advancement of the CHEK Exercise Coach program. This seminar was fascinat-ing and upon its completion, I incorporated additional measurements such as muscle length tension, spinal motion and primal pattern functionality to my assess-ments. There are seven primal patterns (lunge, squat, push, pull, bend, twist and gait) and detection of core deficiencies as well as alignment problems while per-forming these exercises is of foremost importance to help correct posture in motion. This new assessment methodology also allows me to determine how func-tional a client is and where to start them within their exercise program.
Since my return from the certification training, I have also integrated my newfound awareness regarding nu-trition. Many people have intolerances to gluten, milk products and/or soy products. Intolerances aren’t al-lergies, rather they are minor reactions to a product. If the products in question are consumed in excess, however, intolerances can strengthen and prevent the digestive tract from working properly. In fact, carrying fat around the belly is one of the first indicators of food intolerances. That being said, everyone is different and thus individual assessments are necessary.
I really enjoyed everything I learned this year and can’t wait for next year. I’ve already signed up for the CHEK Practitioner level 2 certification in order to continue to provide the most advanced, complete and personalized approach to training.

Kimberley RCMP and Speedwatch held their annual charity golf tour-nament at Kimberley Golf Course, raising over $5,800.
In December the funds were distributed to a number of sports orga-nizations in Kimberly. Seven local clubs re-ceived between $400 and $900. These in-cluded, Kimberley Mi-nor Hockey, to allow persons to have better access to their programs, McKim School, to fa-cilitate a grade 4 and 5 swim program, North-star Figure Skaters, to assist in purchasing a theatrical curtain, Kim-berly Minor Baseball and Kimberley Soccer Association, to purchase a line marker for the fields. Kimberley Jack-rabbit Ski program, to purchase training equip-ment, Kimberley Sea-horse Swim program, to assist with the purchase of training equipment.
A grant of $1,250 was given to the Kimberley Ambulance Society’s Memorial Education Fund. This is in recog-nition of the two ambu-lance attendants, Kim Weitzel and Shawn Cur-rier who tragically lost their lives in 2006 while on duty. In addition a public swim session was purchased to promote physical fitness and family fun in the com-munity.
The tournament saw a record number of golf-ers (110) this year. But this endeavor would not have been possible with-out the generous support of the community busi-ness.

Here are a few tips that can help you deal with the home renovations.
Firstly and most impor-tantly, ask contractors for their proposed work
schedules and organize your timetable in con-sequence. As renovators are generally more con-cerned by the quality of their work rather than the dirt and dust it pro-duces, the contents of the rooms to be renovat-ed should be removed, if possible, and other rooms protected from dust by closing their doors. Clothes should be stored carefully and perishable foods sealed to avoid them becom-ing impregnated with odours and dust.
If you have a pet you could try and find it a more comfortable and less traumatizing home for the duration of the renovations. If you have young children living with you, keep them busy with outdoor activ-ities. Every evening throw out any debris, clean up accumulated dust, and secure the worksite to avoid any risk of injury.

Advertorial
Seniors want it all: a com-fortable home, independence to follow their own schedule and maintain their own interests, safety and security, delicious food and the company of others. And who can blame them? Not long ago, seniors had limited housing options, and few met all of their needs. But in the sum-mer of 2007 Garden View Village opened its doors and a new style of seniors housing opened in Kimberley, providing today’s sen-iors the opportunity to experi-ence retirement living at its best.
Garden View Village is a well-crafted seniors’ community boasting 74 beautiful suites ran-ging from studios to one and two bedroom layouts. These maintenance-free living suites incorporate supportive features to promote independence and 24-hour emergency monitoring service for added peace of mind. Kitchens include a fridge and stove and each suite is equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning controls. Beyond the suite is access to a variety of common areas which include a games room, spa room, library, dining room, coffee room, crafts room, hair salon and lounges. All areas are easily accessible, full of interesting people, engaging activities and share a wonderful sense of community.
Hospitality services at Garden View Village are included in the
affordable monthly rent and include weekly housekeeping, a wide selection of recreational and social activities, 24 hour emer-gency monitoring, shuttle bus service, and hot, delicious meals prepared by on-site chefs. And each meal is served by cheerful wait staff in a central dining room, with a cozy fireplace where guests and families are always welcome.
In addition to the hospi-tality services, residents can enjoy peace of mind knowing they don’t have to worry about extra bills because all utilities including water, sewer, heat, air conditioning and cable are also included.
What’s more, Garden View Village’s convenient location enables seniors to easily maintain their relationships with friends and family. And at Garden View Village pets are a big part of the family. In this pet friendly build-ing residents are encouraged to bring their pets with them to live.
Free from the responsibilities of home-ownership, seniors at Garden View Village can enjoy the many other activities and joys that life offers. We’re fortunate to live in a time when retirement living options provide everything seniors want – and more! Garden View Village is open daily; and you can call (250) 427-4014 for more information or to book a tour.

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) thanks and ex-tends its best wishes to Garry Merkel, the out-going Chair of its Board of Directors. From Kimberley, Merkel was instrumental in the for-mation of CBT, fi rst as part of the committee that negotiated with the Province of BC for the establishment of CBT, and then as a found-ing member of CBT’s Board. He served as Vice-Chair from 1995 to 2006, then Chair from 2006 to 2012.
“On behalf of CBT’s Board and staff, I would like to thank Garry and acknowledge his many contributions; his input and leadership over the course of 18 years has been invaluable,” said Greg Deck, CBT’s new Board Chair. “Garry’s impact on CBT-and through CBT, on the Co-lumbia Basin-cannot be overemphasized.”
Deck, from Radium Hot Springs, is replac-ing Merkel as Chair. He has been on the Board since CBT’s inception in 1995, serving as Vice-Chair from 2008 to the end of 2012. Nakusp’s Laurie Page, who joined the Board in January 2012, is taking over as Vice-Chair.
“Greg helped found CBT and throughout the years has provided expert guidance and leadership to CBT, as well as to other local governments and orga-nizations,” said Merkel. “In Laurie’s year with us, she has provided sig-nifi cant direction to the Board and has stood out through her outstanding efforts as a community volunteer. I also wel-come Rick Jensen to the Board, and am pleased I can leave the gover-nance of CBT in such capable hands.”
Jensen joins the Board from Cranbrook, where he is President and CEO of Panorama Mountain Village, the Board Chair of New Dawn Develop-ments, a director of New Dawn Restorations and President of the Cana-dian Institute of Excel-lence.
Other Board members include Denise Bird-stone (Ktunaxa Nation
Council), Wendy Booth (Fairmont Hot Springs), Kim Deane (Rossland), Gord DeRosa (Trail), Cindy Gallinger (Elk-ford), Am Naqvi (Nel-son), Andru McCracken (Valemount), Paul Peter-son (Burton) and David Raven (Revelstoke).
CBT’s 12-member Board consists of quali-fi ed individuals appoint-ed by the provincial
government: six from among the nominees of the fi ve regional districts and the Ktunaxa Nation Council and six others. All directors must be residents of the Basin.
The Board meets six times a year in commu-
nities around the Basin. The public is invited to attend in order to meet the directors and ask questions about the or-ganization’s work in the Basin. The next meeting is in Revelstoke on Fri-day, January 25, 2013
at 4 p.m. at the Hillcrest Hotel (2100 Oak Drive).
For more information about the Board, and to read highlights and min-utes from Board meet-ings, visit www.cbt.org/board.

The single malt whiskey wave
Inside a book on the history of one of Scot-land’s oldest family-owned distilleries the inscription reads, “To Evan: Calgary’s Glen-farclas Ambassador.” I smiled when my oldest son showed me the book during our Christmas holiday, thinking about the history that leads to the inscription.
When we moved to Creston in 1979,one of the drinks of choice among my co-workers and their spouses was single malt whisky. (Note: it’s whisky with-out the E, in the British Isles and Common-wealth countries. In the United States, it’s whis-key.) At that time there were likely only two choices on the liquor store shelf: Glenfi ddich and Glenfi ddich.
It’s hard to believe that it was only in the 1960s that Glenfi ddich began to market single malt whisky (a loosely-defi ned phrase for a whisky made in a single distillery from malted barley). Until then, references to “scotch” meant whiskys blended from the products of two or more distilleries.
The aforementioned Evan was born on a Fri-day the 13th in 1980. Soon after I was pre-sented with a “new fa-ther’s emergency kit”. Included were a number of small bottles with la-bels like “baby oil” and “gripe water”. My co-workers gleefully point-ed out that the bottles’ contents had all been re-placed with Glenfi ddich. Emergency, indeed!
Evan, senior bartender and budding supervi-sor at the Calgary Pe-troleum Club, is a very knowledgeable wine guy. But when it comes to single malt whisky, he’s a walking encyclo-pedia. He is often hired to pour at whisky events, often by the local Glen-farclas importer. One of the items on my admit-tedly lengthy and ever-changing bucket list is to travel to Scotland with him so that we can visit some of our favourite distilleries. He wouldn’t need much persuasion.
Back to the emergence of single malt whisky. Until distillers like Glenfi ddich began to promote whisky made only in their distillery, the market thought of “scotch” was Chivas Regal and the like. Dis-tilleries were closing at a remarkable rate as small, family-owned en-terprises being unable to cope with the challenges of what had become, by necessity, an interna-tional market.
Today, a handful of global corporations dominate the whisky landscape, most of which have holdings of luxury brands from around the world.
But what about the whisky itself? Water is the fi rst key. Initially, it is added to barley to promote its germina-tion, a process called malting. Later once the germinated grain is dried, it is mixed once again with water to cre-ate a mash, which then is then fermented, with yeast, converting sugars into alcohol. Distilation takes place, sometimes three times and result is a liquid with a 60 to 70
per cent alcohol content. The spirit is then aged in oak casks for a mini-mum of three years and often much longer. Typi-cally, the casks are of American oak and have been used at least once to age bourbon.
There are many varia-tions along the way that make one distillery’s product different from others. In drying the sprouted barley, for in-stance, the heat might be provided by burning peat, which imparts a smoky fl avour. In the past, distilleries were built in close proximity to where necessary in-gredients were grown or found. Hence the hand-ful of whisky makers on the tiny island of Islay (eye-lah), where peat is cut from bogs and used to infl uence the fl avour of the malt. An Islay whisky is almost certain to have a heavy dose of smoke. Aged whiskys might also be put into different casks, ones that have used for sherry, for instance, to add more fl avour and complexity before bottling.
Today the international market is lapping up sin-gle malts at an unprec-edented rate. Production at existing distilleries is being amped up, old and unused distilleries are being brought into production again and new ones are under con-struction. It’s all been a tremendous boost to the Scottish rural economy, with distillery tourism have pretty much the same appeal as wine tourism.
As the Scots say, Slainte!

FORD (BC) LTDDrivers wanted.®
Overall: To stay on top as on off-roader, the Wran-gler introduces signifi cant comfort and convenience improvements for 2013, de-spite doing quite a lot over the last couple of years.
Drivetrain: The 3.6-li-tre V6 makes 285 horse-power and 260 pound-feet of torque; six-speed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics play their part to minimize fuel consumption.
You could refer to the Jeep Wrangler as the Volkswagen Beetle of the sport utility world because of its longev-ity. The legendary off-roader enjoys a hard-core follow-ing; people who fearlessly dare to use these rugged rascals the way they’re in-
tended. Of course not every-one goes boulder-hopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the Jeans), but both groups will appreciate the newly de-signed seats with improved bolstering (and available Katzkin-brand black leather) in front and added support when the road or trail gets rough. The back seat of the four-door Unlimited model as well as the soft top both now fold more easily using, amazingly, just one hand. Finally both two- and four-door Wranglers can be or-dered with a premium top that’s claimed to be easier to clean while its three layers add a degree of noise insu-lation. Jeep claims the lid is also easier to fasten. (Yes, we
had to read that twice, too.) Unchanged is the Chrysler-designed 285-horsepower V6 that connects to either a six-speed manual transmis-sion or optional fi ve-speed automatic. The combo pro-vides for a l/100 km rating of 12.7 city and 9.3 high-way (Unlimited models fare a little worse). Base Sport, Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon trim levels contin-ue; the fi rst two feature part-time four-wheel-drive with optional limited-slip rear differential. The tough-cus-tomer Rubicon uses the Off-Road Rock-Trac unit with its extra-low-range gearing, front/rear-locking differen-tials for greater agility and 32-inch off-road rubber.
Overall: With virtually every other Hyundai model being updated, replaced or dropped, the Sonata is actu-ally fl ying below the radar for 2013; new 2.4 SE in Canada with tons of good-ies.
Drivetrain: Hyundai’s only gas-electric hybrid sys-tem complements two four-cylinder gasoline power choices (one of them tur-bocharged); six-speed au-tomatic transmissions all around.
Hyundai dropped the gauntlet with the 2011 Sona-ta, which was a new sedan in no way similar to its prede-cessor. And it waited while its main competitors fi gured out their responses. Current-ly, the Honda Accord, Toy-ota Camry, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford
Fusion are all either on the ground or coming soon, and several of them are follow-ing the Sonata’s philosophy of four-cylinder greatness (as in no more V6). The base engine remains a 198-horse-power 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horse-power 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net out-put of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other critical ingre-dient is the use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The ve-
hicle’s 5.4 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is near top of the class, but is not quite as good as the latest hybrid of-ferings from Ford and Toyo-ta. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual trans-mission, or optional six-speed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include the usual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth short-range wire-less networking and key-less push-button start. The next-up GLS bulks up with a power driver’s seat and heat-ed front and rear seat, while a new SE model adds leather seating, 18-inch wheels plus the Turbo model’s suspen-sion.

Training begins when sled dogs are puppies. Puppy training must be fun. The puppy must be given tasks he/she can accomplish with ease. The fi rst training occurs at birth when the pup-pies are handled and so-cialized so they become
comfortable with their human companions. When the puppies are old enough to mix with other dogs, they learn to be comfortable with other dogs and to come when they are called.
Puppies do not per-form like adults, but they learn to associate the harness and the team
with fun. Mushers will often put a puppy in a harness to pull a small object. At six or more months, the puppy joins a small team of older dogs. It is critical that this fi rst effort at running be a positive experience. The musher’s goal is to let the dog enjoy its in-stinctive behavior in a safe environment.
Training begins in ear-nest when the dogs are yearlings. Most mush-ers start training in the fall as soon as it is cool enough for the dogs to run comfortably. Fall training is usually cart or 4 wheeler training.
The goals of fall train-ing are several. Dogs must build up their aero-bic condition and mus-cle strength and learn to run as a team. Young dogs learn how to ignore distractions, respond to commands, and handle different trail conditions.
As the training pro-gresses and the months turn cooler, the dog be-come tougher and able to run further and faster. The experienced driver shuffl es dogs around in different positions on the team seeking to fi nd the position that best matches the dog’s unique abilities.
The driver studies his team, learning each dogs individual traits and habits. Most impor-tantly, the driver builds each dog’s confi dence in their athletic ability until the whole team of canine competitors is convinced there is not another dog team in the world that can run as fast or as far as they can!
Training the dogs (and the driver)
It’s time again for the Wilderness Classic Sled Dog Derby and people
throughout the Koote-nay region and beyond are getting their warm
clothing ready in antici-pation of the event.
This year’s competi-tion features mushers from around the prov-ince and from other corners of the world as they compete to take
home the win and brag-ging rights for next year’s event. So put on your warm woolies, fi ll up a thermos and enjoy this unique Elkford at-traction.

If you’re a fan of winter sports, you’ll save time and perhaps money too if you shop for sports equipment close to home. Why go through the hassle of driving long distances or losing hours to browsing on the Web when you can find everything you need locally? Buying sports equipment from a local business is so practical: it’s easier to get refunds, exchanges, repairs, and advice. Every thing you need is close at hand.
Winter sports lovers know that it’s important to have equipment that is good quality, well adjusted, and expertly maintained — it’s the only way to be assured that you can practice your sport as safely as possible. A binding has
come off one of your skis? One of your skates needs a new blade? You need something new to improve your comfort or your performance level? By buying locally, you can take advan-tage of these types of service without having to drive to the box stores or order “blind” from the Internet. By buying locally, you have a better chance of getting personalized service, from choo sing the equipment right through to maintaining it.
But that’s not all. Salespeople who work in local stores are often a great source of local knowledge. They might be able to help you discover new places to practice your sport accor ding to your level of expertise. And in a
hometown shop, you might even find yourself being served by the manager! That’s exactly what buying local means: quality products and attentive, professional ser vice, provided in a friendly and courteous atmosphere.
Buying locally is increasingly important; it contributes to the economic prosperity of our area and is in everyone’s best interest. This winter, be sure to make the most of the plea-sures of life by shopping close to home.
