Uganda, a beauti-ful East African land astride the Equator known as the “Pearl of
Africa” with a popula-tion of Canada tucked into a nation four times the size of the Koote-nays.
Uganda, home to
beautiful people who struggle through life with faith and a smile even though ranked 113th of the world’s 134 nations listed on the 2011 Human De-velopment Index (Can-ada is 12th).
Uganda, home to Kimi Toyota who, in 2007, fell in love with 9 of those smiles and began a simple minis-try to find 9 sponsors to ensure their education.
In the 4 years since, her small organization, “His Hope Uganda”, has blossomed to in-clude over 140 chil-dren and her ministry, supported largely by families with their roots in the Cranbrook area, continues to ex-pand, giving hope to a growing number of the needy.
As HHU moves into its fifth year, new op-portunities are on the East African horizon.
To date, 21 collapsing shelters have been re-placed with brick and metal roofed homes while 29 families now have safe and more sanitary private brick latrines with attached washing facilities. More will be built in the coming months, thanks to the generosi-ty of local contributors.
Medically, well over 1,000 individuals of many backgrounds have received medical treatment for ailments as diverse as malaria and typhoid to cancer, hydrocephalus, sickle-cell anemia and broken bones. Partnering with a church in the Eastern United States, HHU is now looking into the establishment of a clin-ic to serve the needs to the villages in the area it serves.
A number of women have been trained in tailoring and small business opportunities have been provided to help sustain several families.
This growth in com-passion has been made possible through the generosity of local people and the support of many local business-es. Connecting to the people of the Bugembe region of Jinja, Ugan-
da to Cranbrookians through sponsorship, letters, gifts and photos has been the backbone of HHU.
Two teams over the past two years have de-voted two weeks each in building houses and latrines, distributing supplies, leading bible camps, meeting the people, and returning with a coating of light red dust, many life-changing memories and a determination to return. Of the 37 who gave of their time, 28 are from the Cranbrook and Fernie communi-ties.
On Saturday, Janu-ary 5th, Kimi Toyota will be sharing stories of her home, Uganda, and video of the most recent team trip in Oc-tober of 2012. Infor-mation will also be pro-vided on the next team venture, scheduled for August of 2013.
A silent auction will seek to raise enough funds to offset the op-erating costs for the year so that future giv-ing will be directed entirely to projects and sponsorship. The eve-ning at the Alliance Church gymnasium is also intended to high-

Welcome to a New Year
The other day, I read about an interesting New Year’s tradition. Instead of struggling with resolutions you made with best intentions on January 1 and feel defeated about not keeping 364 days later on New Year’s Eve, try this strategy: Start the year with an empty jar. Each time something good happens, make a note and put it into the jar. Then on New Year’s Eve, empty the jar and look at all the great things that have happened over the course of the year.
For some reason, it sometimes seems easier to remember the hard knocks in life and lose sight of all the little successes and delightful moments. Some might say, never being completely satisfied is necessary motivation for improvement, but wouldn't it be nicer to build on past successes, rather than feel you are constantly catching up to your expectations?
One of the areas I will be looking to take this different approach to this year, is my garden. It would be easy to dwell on the things that are still not the way they are planned, from weeds and brown spots in the lawn to plants that didn’t make it through the winter. But when I think back a little further, there are many pleasant memories from last year’s garden. There was that moment when the first tulip poked its shoots out of the ground and the time when we realized that the iris we thought would never bloom were actually going to show their vibrant purple colours.
Nothing, however, will stick in my memory like harvest time with my family - everybody cutting fresh lettuce, picking juicy raspberries that would never make it into the house and digging the small yet delicious carrots.
We did not spend a lot of time in the garden, there are many things we could have done. Right now, some of the evidence is covered by a blanket of snow, such as the planters that were not moved into the garage or the garden tools that were left out by the composter. But really, they will still be there when the snow melts in the spring.
There are things we would like to get accomplished in our yard this year. Maybe install an irrigation system and get right on those aphids should they attack the plum trees again. But maybe instead of saying: we finally have to put in the irrigation system this year, we could look at expanding on the work we have already accomplished in creating a soothing water feature. And really, last year we had our first plums on the trees since planting them, even with aphids running wild on one of them. So where is there but to go up for next season?
Gardening is still one of the most important pastimes in North America. Especially many young families seem to be looking to their backyards and community plots for activities and to grow some healthy and nutritious food. According to the free dictionary online a pastime is “an activity that occupies one’s spare time pleasantly”. So why are we sometimes intimidated by gardening or stressing out over our spaces not being perfect?
Gardening should most importantly be fun. Some people like to spend their entire season in the garden, planting and weeding, pruning and clipping to get the perfect look for their space. Those of us who don’t have the time to spend or the space available that shouldn’t mean we can’t be just as content. A single planter on the balcony or a grove of trees and rows of flower beds - all are the works of passionate gardeners.
I already have my jar picked out to collect those memories for 2013. Cheers to a year of happy gardening.
Till next time... Happy New YearSubmitted by Kerstin

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

New Curves Complete® includes exercise, meal plans, and coaching—for as low as $14.95 a week and NO joining fee!
Curves knows that most people who are serious about losing weight won’t get the results they want by just dieting. They also need to exercise and they need encouragement to stick to the plan. This was the thinking behind the revolutionary new weight loss program Curves Complete®—the only program of its kind on the market that offers exercise, customized meal plans, and coaching in one integrated program. And, according to Carla Lowden, owner of Cranbrook Curves, the cost is comparable to what other programs charge for diet alone.
What makes the program so successful?“It’s really as simple as 1-2-3,” said Curves’ Registered Dietitian Nadia Rodman. “The Curves circuit gives you strength and cardio training to protect your muscles and burn fat, our proven nutrition plan is fully customizable to your lifestyle, and your Curves coach helps you set goals and reach them one-on-one. If you simply follow the plan—which you can print as a weekly tracking sheet and take to your coaching sessions—you simply can’t help but lose. Or rather, win.”Preliminary results of Curves members who participated in the program prior to its January public launch have been phenomenal. Findings indicate that nearly 100 percent of weight lost on Curves Complete is body fat, compared to conventional diets in which weight lost typically includes up to 30 percent muscle tissue. By preserving lean muscle, Curves Complete helps maintain or even boost the body’s metabolism for better long term results.Curves Complete is the culmination of years of research involving thousands of study participants. “Ninety-five percent of dieters fail—or lose weight only to gain it all back—not because there’s something wrong with them, but because there’s something wrong with conventional diets,” said Curves’ Director of Exercise & Research Katie Mitchell. “It takes a combination of three things: exercise, diet, and coaching, or motivation, to successfully lose weight as body fat rather than lean muscle and then keep it off.”“The success of the program hinges on the Curves Complete coaches, Certified by Cleveland Clinic” says Mitchell. “After all, it doesn’t matter how much you know about proper diet and exercise—if you don’t have the motivation and accountability to follow through with them, the knowledge is useless. Curves collaborated with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, ranked among the top four hospitals and the No.1 heart hospital in the United States, to create the Curves Complete coaching certification for its clubs.”Curves Complete includes a Web portal which features easy meal planning, recipes and shopping lists, goal tracking, motivational tools, a vibrant online community for support, and more. And once a Curves Complete member, always a Curves Complete online member—the Web portal and tools remain 100 percent free for life.“With the launch of the new Curves Complete program, Curves becomes the first and only company to offer women a complete weight loss solution—exercise, meal plans, and coaching—in one convenient location and for about the same price as other weight loss companies charge for diet alone,” said Mike Raymond, Vice President of Marketing at Curves. Back by British Co-lumbian demand, a new series of ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ job fairs will come to 22 communities be-ginning in January to promote current job op-portunities, career trends and skills training - with the addition of a new Skills4BC booth.
The new fairs will be-gin in Pitt Meadows on Jan. 22 and wrap up in Vancouver on March 28. One of the fairs will take place in Kimberley on February 19 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“From public feed-back, we know that Brit-
ish Columbians found the job fairs to be help-ful in a number of ways - for connecting face-to-face with employers, for practicing interview skills, for fi nding out what jobs and skills are in demand, and for even learning more about B.C.’s economy. Our government is excited to extend this opportunity to even more British Co-lumbians in the months ahead,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Responsi-ble for Labour Pat Bell.
These new fairs are a continuation of the 24
events held in commu-nities throughout B.C. between September and November 2012, where more than 31,000 Brit-ish Columbians of all ages attended, from high school students to older workers looking to re-enter the workforce.
A new ‘Skills4BC’ booth will be onsite at each job fair with staff to answer questions and share information on skills training in B.C.
Exhibitors at each fair will also include em-ployers from a range of sectors, including post-secondary institutions,
training authorities, in-dustry associations and health authorities, as well as local WorkBC Employment Services Centres and the ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ mobile exhibit.
The ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ job fairs are free and open to anyone looking to connect with a local employer or fi nd more information on skills training, career de-velopment and more.
For more informa-tion visit ‘BC Jobs Start Here’ job fairs: www.bc-jobsplan.ca.
