The Alexandria District Connector Connecting local United Methodist Churches to one another and to the World
MARCH 2014
Last month, I focused on our 2014 Spiritual Resolu ons by looking back to 2013’s prayer emphasis and looking forward to our current challenge – to help and equip our local churches to prac ce one hour of daily spiritual disciplines and grow in Christ. As I read both February’s Virginia Advocate and the Alexandria District Connector, two things came to mind rela ve to helping and equipping our district churches (and laity) to engage in daily spiritual disciplines. First, many events are planned – some have already occurred in February; then there’s 5 Talent Academy, UMM and UMW events, Bishop’s Convoca on on Prayer, UMCOR ERT training, lay servant ministries training, ‘explora on’ events, Dr. Phil Maynard seminars, a na onwide Cambodia Consulta on, and don’t forget – webinars. Second, Bishop Cho is concerned that since so many responded to the invita on to sign the covenant for spiritual disciplines; “what’s next” and how do we help and nurture these faithful responders to
grow in Christ? He goes on to say that the conference is planning to provide a brief guide and resources for the purpose of helping and nurturing those looking for spiritual disciplines training.
So … my ques on is … “How are you responding to your call and/or using your spiritual gi s?” Are we feeling overwhelmed yet? Are there too many events scheduled? Just remember that we don’t have to do it all – different people respond to
different sources/presenta on of material. Not to men on that mul ple offerings and/or modes of presenta on helps our personal schedules. With all the informa on
sources available to us today, how will you decide – “what’s next?” as you equip yourself and others to engage in daily spiritual disciplines?
Blessings,
John Meeuwissen
District Lay Leader

Notes from the DS
“Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.” Ezekiel 18:30, NIV
Some of us are much tougher on ourselves than any cri c could ever be. I confess to o en having a mindset of dissa sfac on with my shortcomings. I also confess to the occasional prac ce during Lent of looking inward and focusing on flaws and shortcomings. However, the more I study scripture and the nature of salva on, the clearer I become in understanding that Lent is the ma er of recommi ng my life to God and less about how I feel about myself. I think Chris anity.about.com says it well:
“Repentance means a sincere turning away, in both the mind and heart, from self to God. In a biblical context, repentance is recognizing that our sin is offensive to God. Repentance can be shallow, such as the remorse we feel because of fear of punishment (like Cain) or it can be deep, such as realizing how much our sins cost Jesus Christ and how his saving grace washes us clean (like the conversion of Paul). The Bible does not men on the custom of Lent, however, the prac ce of repentance and mourning in ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job 2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Ma hew 11:21.”
Each me we turn Lent into how we feel about ourselves, we con nue a prac ce of navel gazing in which God is le out. In fact, when we leave sin, repentance, and confession out of Lent, we leave God out of Lent. Let me con nue my
confession by saying that I realize I have engaged in the task of naming my shortcomings and felt remorse, without ever naming the sin, separa on, and distance I created when I did not inten onally seek God’s council regarding my spiritual state of being.
I’m not always crazy about confessing my sin, nor do I rush into Lent with joy and thanksgiving. I do however look forward to anything that draws me closer to God, even if I have to first name and wrestle with sins and flaws that show me how unprepared I am to stand in God’s presence. We’ve heard the phrase “it’s not about you.” This is certainly the case when it comes to Lent. Lent isn’t about us, but about God’s deep passionate love of us and another a empt to draw us closer to God’s presence. The glory and wonder is that when we are prepared to live in God’s presence, we then are redeemed, reclaimed, and can experience the abundance of God’s joy. So, I’m willing to engage the spiritual discipline of repentance for the reward of holy bliss.
This Lenten season, I invite you to take another look at how you make the seasonal journey. I invite you to take a few moments each day for Bible study and reflec on on how hard God is working to bring you into a closer rela onship. I’m convinced the result will be wonderful.
Rev. Ted Smith
Rev. Ted Smith is ac ng District Superintendent of the Alexandria District, and the District Superintendent of the Fredericksburg District.
Lent Isn’t About Perfection
In 1739, John Wesley wrote, “I look on all the world as my parish,” and members of Franconia UMC (Alexandria District) are taking that literally. For the past year, John Wesley bobble head (“JWB” ‐ see photo) has been traveling with church members on vaca ons and work assignments. JWB has just returned from South America, where, among other witnessing du es, he posed for a photo with some (very surprised) Methodists from Wales. John Wesley, s ll spreading God’s word! Arise is rooted in the Chris an Church (Disciples of Christ), Episcopal, Presbyterian (USA), United Church of Christ, and United Methodist tradi ons, but it comes together to offer a journey in faith with individuals of many other backgrounds as well.
