~ or the seventh year, Heln~ All-Southern California Board of Athletics---- has selected all-star football teams from those ClF high schools com-

peting in the North-South section of the Interscholastic Federation.Board members from the Southern California area, covering high school athletics, have been making these All-Southern California selections since 1937, but only since1951 have they named teams representing high schools \~th generally smaller enrollments than those Central Section schools.

Unable to separate two outstanding running backs in the small-schoolssection, Helms Board members named co-players of the year for 1957. Hal Tobin andand Henry Enriquez were the boys named, both running for over 1,200 yards duringthe 1957 campaign.

Tobin scored 138 points during the year, 19 touchdo~ms and 24 PAT's. Hecarried the ball 155 times from scrimmage, gaining a total of 1,239 yards and an 8yard average. Hal's three-year totals at Coronado are 343 carries, 2,178 yards fora 6.4 yard average an5 a total of 248 points. Tobin performed at right half onoffense and was a scoring threat from anywhere on the field.

Henry Enriquez, star of Hater Dei's Southern Group ClF Champions, gained1,235 yards on 122 carries for an average of 10 yards per carry. He has been starting fullback at Mater Dei for three years, and his coach Dick Coury makes no bonesabout calling him the best back in the state of California. This year he scored atotal of 84 points on 14 touchdo,~s and in the elF Finals against Claremont, hegained 234 yards on 20 carries and scored three TDs as the i"lonarchs triumphed, 39-14-

Other top backs named with Tobin and Enriquez on the first team are BillRedell of San i·harino, quarterback for Vic Schwenk's Northern Group Champions; ArtHoover, coach Jack Tuttle's ace helfback at San Luis Obispo, who gained 1,091 yardson 109 carries for a 10 yard average; and Dayton Orsburn, Bell Gardens' hard-hittingsenior halfback, who scored 60 points for the year.

Top performers on the second team in the backfield are Gordon Frank, whowas the workhorse of the Avocado League champion Escondido eleven. Frank scored 81points, ,~rhile averaging 7.7 yards per carry. Jess Paco, \o1ho averaged 10.7 yards forBishop which won the Small School playoff 33-0 over Ramona. Paco has averaged over10 yards per car~ for his years at Bishop. Weldon Rutledge, l80-pound halfbackfrom Brawley, Imperial League champions, averaged 6.6 yards per handle and averagedover 41 yards for 19 punts. Bob Price, Claremont High's quarterback who directedthe Wolfpack to three league titles and twice to runner-up spots in the SouthernGroup playoffs, scored 84 points and passed with the best in California. CoachDoyle Long calls Lee Bernhardi the best college prospect he's coached in 14 years.Bernhardi gained 1,316 yards in 97 carries for 23 touchdowns and a 13.56 average.

Three juniors \~lere named to this year's third team, one finding his wayonto to the first team. San ~arinols Bill Redell, is the lower classman on the firstteam, while Al ~~indfeldt (Mary Star), Duane Lenz (Needles), and Charles Cordero(Santa Barbara Catholic) are the juniors on the third tearrl

Theytherefore were announced as co-players of the year for 1957. The same problem confronted the Board when All-City top player honors were discussed. James Bates, from1Vlanual Arts t city champions and Bob Levingston, ace vdngman for Harry Edelson's L.A.High squad, again won out in the balloting •••••this time for All-City player of theyear honors.

Bates, who was a big factor in Manua1 1 s city title with wins over NorthHoll~rood, 28-0; Eagle Rock 19-12; and Banning, 23-13, was Jim Blewett's top performer over the long season's haul. He helped his team to a co-championship withFremont in the Southern League and then paced them in the playoffs. He scored 36points on offense and was a standout as a defensive halfback.

Bob Levingston, who scored 71 points during the city campaign to rankright with the leaders, is rated favorably with the best ends to ever play for LosAngeles High School. He played at both end and halfback on defense and, althoughhampered with a leg injury during part of the season, was a standout on the field.Bob was a first team all-city selection last year.

For having been named Los Angeles City Football co-players of the yearfor 1957, James Bates and Robert Levingston will receive special Helms medal awardsat the 21st annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to beheld at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 18, at 10:30 a.m. At this time, noted football coaches and personalities famed for their gridiron exploits \~ll beinvited guests to help in honoring the 1957 All-Los Angeles City Teams.

All seven league players of the year were n&~ed to this year's firstteam. Tvro linemen -- Frank Macari, tackle on Johnny Sanders big and rugged NorthHoll~Tood Valley championship team, and ~like Rutz, a hard-nosed center and captainof Gordon~'Jellst Narbonne eleven -- V.Jere picked as standouts in their respectiveleagues. Three backs - Alan Shields, as good a running back as there was in thecity for Roy Jae's Eagle Rock Northern league champs; James Van Aken, flashy fullback for Grayson Turney at Venice; and James Ludwick, L.A. City scoring champ (90points) It.Jho led Huntington Park to the Eastern circuit cro\m -- were the players ofthe year placed on the first all-city team. Bates and Levingston were also named.

~NO players picked as all-city performers in 1956 are back on this year'steam. Bob Levingston repeated as a first-team end and ¥utchell Dimkich, hard-runninglrJilson fullback who does everything well, moved up from the third to the secondsquad. Two lower classmen, Mitchell Dimkich (junior) and Fremont's right halfbackAnthony Lorick (sophomore), will be reckoned with by city pigskin performers nextfall.

The -\:liarriors finished one half game ahead of Venice High, which landedtwo players on the first team and two on the second.

It was Grayson Turney's top back, Jim Van Aken, who ran off \'rith player of theyear honors for 1957. The flashy 180-pound fullback was most impressive in everygame he played this season and performed well on both offense and d~fense. His coachranks him as one of the top runners in the school's football history•. Monty Neyers,a rough-tough aggressive guard for the Gondoliers over the season, ~~s the otherfirst team selection. ~

Three juniors were named to the first team•. Both ends, Nike Gale of Harshalland Don Ruedy of Hamilton and Fairfax tackle Stan Roden. Two juniors made the second team•••• end John Evenson of Hollywood and fullback Fred Alegria of I::iarshall.

There were three repeaters from the 1956 ~Jestem League squad. ~1onty Heyerswas again named as a first team guard, while Roger Randolph (University) and FrankVuyoshi (Venice) again were named to second team end and backfield berths respectively.

Blewett's Toilers defeated three very tough opponents iL'1 the Los Angeles Cit:!..playoffs - North Hollywood, 28-0; Eagle Rock 19-12; and Banning in the finals,23-13. Jim's gems proved opportunists in each battle, taking advantage of errorsto cash in when things looked blackest. Behind two touchdolms in the Eagle Rockgame, the Toilers refused to get flustered and roared back to win it.

The Helms Board named co-players of the year in the Southern loop, unable toseparate the abilities of two fine ends, Jim Bates and Bob Levingston. Bates prov6~
