Background
The All Star Basketball camp is a new organization dedicated to the success of young
aspiring athletes. Our goal is to create a camp to help transition new upcoming
players into well rounded athletes. Our camp will help refine the basic skills of
basketball and introduce/ teach more challenging skills. This camp is great for young
athletes who are aspiring to play at a higher level such as high school and even
college. We will provide the correct training in order to help prepare each athlete and
allow them to reach their full potential. Our organization provides a pleasant and
enjoyable environment for all children. The coaches and counselors will challenge the
weaknesses of each athlete in order to strengthen all aspects of their game. Our staff
is dedicated and eager to pass on their knowledge and expertise to our campers!
Mission Statement
Our mission is to promote athletics and refine the basic skills of basketball. We want
to encourage teamwork, self confidence, hard work and dedication. Our overall goal
is to have a successful camp which creates well rounded athletes while
implementing fun. We will accomplish this by using game scenarios as well as skill
specific activities to increase the performance of all participating campers. Our
coaches and counselors are eager to help our campers improve on their specific
weaknesses as well as recognize new strengths. All campers will be treated equally
and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our coaches and counselors
have a great background of basketball and will become a positive role model to each
camper. It is our goal to make each camper feel as if they are apart of a new team/
family, the All Star Basketball team. Our camp is a no pressure learning environment
therefore, all campers can relax and have fun. Our philosophy is winning isn’t
everything, the amount of effort and improvement shown is more important. Our
main focus is to teach the campers that working as a team is the most important
aspect, there is no I in Team.

Counselor Responsibilities
The counselors play an important role in our camp. In order to become a counselor
you must meet a certain criteria. A counselor is responsible for working under the
direction of the coaches and mangers of the camp. It is important for a counselor to
follow directions from the coaches and act as a good role model for the children. The
counselors are required to be friendly, patient, caring and understanding to all the
children. A counselor must be knowledgeable of the rules/ regulations of basketball
in order to assist the coaches to teach/ improve the children’s basic skills. In order to
succeed in this position it is important to enjoy working with children and to be
motivational. No camper should receive special treatment from any counselors, they
all must be treated equally. A qualification of this job is to have experience in
basketball. An ideal candidate would be a current high school basketball player who
the children can look up to. It is important to show the children that their dreams of
playing on the high school basketball team are achievable and the counselors can
show them exactly what they need to improve on. It is required that each counselor is
certified in CPR and AED just in case of an emergency. The counselors will be working
one on one with the athletes therefore, if no one else is around they must fulfill these
duties in case of an emergency. It is the counselors responsibility to help clean the
facility, this includes: cleaning up trash, empty garbage cans, and cleaning
bathrooms. Some example job interview questions include:
Why are you interested in this position?
Why do you think this job would be a good fit for you?
What qualities do you possess for success in this position?
How long have you been playing basketball?
What position did/do you play?
Do you work well with children?
Do you have any prior experience as a counselor?
How would you handle a situation if two children were fighting?
If a child was being bullied what would you do? What would be the
consequences?
If a child is frustrated with a drill how would you calm him/her down? How
could you help the child move past the frustration?
6
Athletic Trainer Responsibilities
The athletic trainer is the only medical care provider that will be present on the scene
of the camp at all times. Therefore, this job must be taken very serious. The athletic
trainer must try to prevent and care for all injuries. It is the athletic trainers’
responsibility to decide if the facility is a safe condition for the athletes to participate
on. For example, the facility conditions and weather conditions must be safe for all
children. The athletic trainer must be able to monitor all activities and recognize if an
injury occurs. If a significant injury occurs the athletic trainer must contact the
parent/ guardian. The athletic trainer must make the decision if an ambulance or
referral to a doctor is necessary. The following day the athletic trainer must follow up
on the injury and rehabilitate the athlete if necessary. The athletic trainer is
responsible for ordering the medical supplies however, it must be checked by the
manager before submitting the order. The athletic trainer must be caring,
understanding and friendly to all children. The health of the athletes must be that
athletic trainers’ main priority. No child should receive special care or treatment. The
athletic trainer must have an ATC credential and CPR/AED certified. It is important for
the athletic trainer to have prior experience with children between the ages of 8- 14
years old. An athletic trainer should be able to remain calm in emergency situations
and be able to take control. Some example job interview questions are:
Why are you interested in this position?
Do you have previous experience with children between the ages of 8-14?
Do you have a great understanding of basketball?
Do you have any experience as an athletic trainer in a basketball camp?
What qualities make you a good fit for this camp?
Would you be available every day the camp is open? Is it necessary to have
more than one athletic trainer on call?
How would you react if more than one child is hurt at the same time?
If a coach insists that an injured athlete is okay to play and you know they are
not how would you handle the situation?
If you suspected that the campers were being pushed too hard by the coaches
or counselors how would you approach the situation?
What makes you the best fit as the athletic trainer for this camp?
7
Coaches Handbook
The coaches are responsible for organizing all curriculum, activities and drills for the
campers. Before camp is in session the coaches must get together and plan out the
entire camp. For example, the coaches and counselors must decide what will be the
topic for each week, what drills should be incorporated, when to give a break to rest,
how to organize the teams, and delegate responsibilities amongst the staff. Before
each day when camp begins a meeting is held for all the staff to develop a goal for
the day and discuss any necessary information pertaining to that day. At the end of
the day the coaches must collect all their equipment and help the counselors clean
up the camp before everyone leaves for the day. It is the coach’s responsibility to
wait until all campers are picked up by their parents/ guardians before they can
leave to go home.
Coaches must hold all campers to the same standard. No camper should receive
special treatment or be held to a higher standard than any other camper. The
coaches must use constructive criticism when teaching to set an example to all the
campers. A coach may not yell, harass, or touch any camper. All coaches must be
CPR and AED certified in case of an emergency. Coaches must have a cell phone on
them at all times in order to keep in contact with other staff or in case of an
emergency. All coaches and other staff must work together in order to keep the camp
running smoothly. A positive attitude is necessary at all times!
If an injury occurs the coach should immediately get the athletic trainer. If it is a life
threatening injury occurs the coach should call 911 first. If the athletic trainer says a
camper can not participate due to an injury the coach must understand and follow
the athletic trainer’s instructions. If the weather is questionable it is the athletic
trainer’s responsibility to decide if the conditions are safe for the campers to
participate outside. If the conditions are not safe then the camp must be held
indoors.
The coaches must control the behavior of the campers. If a camper is behaving
inappropriately the coach must follow the system defined in the participant code of
ethics. The coaches must build a trusting relationship with the campers in order to
gain respect and full control. The campers will not follow the rules if they do not
respect what the staff and camp stand for.

Programs
One on One Training: This program is specific for campers who would benefit from a
one on one session with a coach and counselor. This program is perfect for an
athlete who needs extra help/time to refine a specific skill. This program is an
additional fee from the original camp fee. The program takes place before or after
the actual camp. This session occurs once a week and is scheduled to the
convenience of the camper. This program allows the coach and counselor to have full
attention on the camper. The coach can give instant feedback to the camper on how
to improve their skills. This session can also be used as a review of previous
development or game sessions from that week. A one on one training session takes
about an hour of your time. But this is time well spent!
Development: This program acts as a lesson session on basketball. Each day the
coaches select a specific skill or strategy to be taught/ reviewed. The campers must
discuss what they know about the skill and take notes on new information. The
campers must watch movie clips of professional athletes completing the skill. This
will reinforce the correct way the skill should be performed as well as provide a role
model for the campers to look up to. After the skill is taught verbally and visually the
campers must perform the skills in certain drills. This helps the campers learn all
aspects of the skill. Later in the day the campers can try to use the new skills in the
Game Time session to incorporate the skill at game speed.
Game Time: This program consists of an actual game situation between different
groups in the camp of similar ages. The program allows the campers to apply the
skills that are learned through out each session. The coaches and counselors give
advice and strategies through out the game. This allows the campers to practice at
actual game speed to help transfer the skills learned. After each game the coaches
review with the campers the highlights of the game and what needs improvement.
This session helps the campers unite as a team. The campers learn good
sportsmanship as well as how to become a team player.

Hiring Process
A. Counselor
The hiring process of our counselors is very basic. We would like to give the
first opportunity to the local high school boy’s and girl’s basketball team. The
manager sets up s stand in the local high school for a week with a sign up
interview sheet. All students are eligible to sign up however, they must have
some kind of basketball background. Once the players show an interest in our
camp we schedule an interview with our manager, camp coordinator and the
coaches are invited to attend as well.
Refer to the job description and interview questions in order to understand
how the interview process is run. The job candidates must talk about
themselves, accomplishments, future goals and reasons why they want the
job. The manager and camp coordinator ask the candidates a series of
questions to decide if the counselor position would be a good fit for them.
Once the interview is finished the job candidate will receive a phone call
within a few days if they got the job. If they get the job they will be called in
with all the other counselors for a general meeting discussing, their salary,
hours, rules, code of ethics and review their job responsibilities. Overall , in
order to get the job the manager and camp coordinator must feel the job
candidate is a good role model to child, responsible, mature and has good
knowledge of basketball. The new counselors must sign the code of ethics
and agree to all the terms listed.
B. Coaches
The coaches at the local high school are first approached for the job positions.
Job opportunities are extended to other high school basketball coaches within
the area. If more coaches are still needed then job listings will be posted on
craigslist as well. The coaches must have experience with coaching kids
basketball teams. The candidates must fill out an application and schedule an
interview with the manager and camp coordinator. The job candidates are
interviewed similarly to the counselors. They must present a resume at the
interview and explain about their personality and background. They must
explain why they are interested in the job and why they think they will be a
good edition to the All Star Basketball Camp Staff. The coaches must present
themselves in the correct manner, they must be professional, respectful,
knowledgeable, outgoing, energetic and enjoy working with children. It is
preferred that the coaches have experience however, it is not mandatory. The
coaches must be certified to coach and must be currently CPR and AED
certified. The coaches must appear organized and sustain the same values
the camp promotes. Once the interview is over the coaches will receive a
phone call within a week. Once again all the coaches will attend a meeting to
discuss salary, code of ethics, rules, and responsibilities. Once all employees
are hired a workshop will be help with all the staff to organize everyone’s roles
in the camp and work out any problems.
18
C. Managers, Head of enrollment and Athletic Trainer
An ad will be placed in local newspapers as well as on craigslist. The camp
coordinator is responsible for setting up interviews and interviewing all job
candidates. The job candidates must have proper schooling/ certification and
some type of relevant experience. The candidates are interviewed separately
and must present a resume. The candidates must be professional,
responsible and organized. The candidates must have good social skills and
problem solving skills. After the interview the candidates will receive a phone
call if they got the job. If the candidate got the job he/ she must meet with
camp coordinator for training in order to learn their role in the camp.
D. Food Service
Job listings will be posted in newspaper, craigslist and in the school system.
The interview session will be a group setting. Each candidate will answer
questions about themselves and any other relevant information. The general
manager, camp coordination and food service manager will conduct the
interview. The candidates must be eager to work, friendly and promote our
core values. The candidates will be hired on the spot at the interview. The
code of ethics will be reviewed as well as job responsibilities. The food service
crew must attend the employee workshop as well.
19
Communication
The key communication between employees is between e-mails. All employees must
give the manager and camp coordinator their e-mail and cell phone number once
they are hired. An e-mail and cell phone list of each employee will be given out to
each staff member. Any relevant information such as scheduling meetings,
emergencies, canceling camp, or calling out/ finding coverage will be discussed
through e-mails. However, a mandatory staff meeting will be held forty-five minutes
before each day of camp to discuss a goal of the day, any problems from the previous
day, any changes that must be made, setting up activities and organization of the
day’s events. Every staff member must be on time and attend every meeting. If for
any reason a staff member can not make the meeting an e-mail must be sent to the
manager explaining why. The meetings are held by the general camp manager and
the camp coordinator must attend as well. At each meeting any staff member can
express their thoughts or any problems. If the meeting must be canceled for any
reason the staff will receive an e-mail before the meeting is supposed to take place.
However, if no e-mail is sent for cancelation then the meeting will occur each day.
The staff is paid an extra hour for attending the meeting If campers start to arrive
while the meeting is going on the meeting will end. If this occurs a memo or e-mail is
distributed to all staff to state all information that was not able to be covered. All
members are responsible to follow all information given in the meeting. If the
campers parents/ guardians have any questions or problems they may reach the
manager and camp coordinator by e-mail, phone, or before/after the camp session.
The first day of camp a meeting will be held for all staff and campers. This meeting
will discuss how the camp will be run and goals will be created for each camper. The
camper must fill out an evaluation on their skills before participating in the camp.
The camper will also fill out an evaluation on their skills on the last day of camp to re-
evaluate their skills. These evaluations will provide information about how well the
camp helped the camper’s self- esteem, confidence, and overall skill. These
evaluations will be reviewed and handed in to each coach by the end of the camp.
At the final day of camp all family members will be invited to attend the final day of
the tournament. After the tournament is over each parent and child must fill out a
camp evaluation form that will rate the satisfaction of the camp. The manager and
camp coordinator will fill out a job performance evaluation on each staff member. If
the manager and camp coordinator were pleased with the staff member’s work
ethics and performance the employee will be invited back to the camp staff the
following year.

Safety
Safety is a key component in this camp. All counselors and coaches present have
been trained on all safety issues. These issues include a choking victim, an injury, a
fire, a fight, inclement weather, safe evacuation and the procedure if an allergic
reaction occurs. As you know the camp will mostly take place outside. In case of rain
or inclement weather we will be using the indoor facilities which are right next to the
outdoor courts. Our athletic trainer will help us track the weather in case of
dangerous weather (high humidity, lightning, heavy winds, heavy rains, etc.) We have
many exit doors in the indoor facility that are clearly labeled and may be used in case
of an emergency. All of our staff is CPR and AED certified in case of an emergency.
All coaches and counselors will have a cell phone with them at all times in case an
emergency occurs and 911 must be called. The camper emergency contact
information will be easily accessible to all staff. An athletic trainer will be present
each day the camp is in session. Therefore, if an injury occurs the athletic trainer can
attend to it and decide if further medical care is necessary. We will take the proper
precautions to keep your children safe!
Our camp will be accessible to a large amount of campers. Therefore in order to keep
the facility less crowded and safe we have two separate sessions for the campers.
The campers between the ages of 9-11 will attend the morning session 9am to 1pm.
The campers between the ages of 12- 14 will attend the afternoon session 1pm to
5pm. This allows the coaches to closely monitor their teams as well as a larger area
to play.
Fire extinguishers are available, properly checked and labeled in case of a fire. Each
employee knows exactly where they are located. When the campers must participate
indoors the scheduled will be altered in order to share the space. In case of an injury
the campers will always know where to locate the athletic trainer.

Advocating Profession
Marketing is the most important factor when trying to promote a good business. Our
camp is brand new therefore, we must find different ways to educate people about
the camp. In order to teach people about our camp they must first know our camp
exists. Flyers are a great way to grab the attention of possible customers to explain
the basics of our camp. The flyer must stick out in order to grab their attention. The
use of large font and bright colors will help.
The placement of the flyers is very important. Flyers should be given out to kids in the
local school systems, posted on bulletin boards in the school, handed out to local
basketball teams/ coaches, and posted around popular places in the area. Flyers will
quickly get the All Star Basketball Camp name known. We also have a brochure that
will go into more detail about our camp. It will give the specifics about how the camp
is run, the different types of programs, our location and fees. The brochure will better
explain why our camp is the better choice for their children’s summer activities.
The next step is to advertise our open house. An advertisement will be placed in the
local town paper to help educate people about our camp and the upcoming open
house. Also to help spread the word about our open house we will use flyers, the
word of mouth and our website. In order to grab the potential customer’s attention it
is important to give a special incentive like a pre registration offer if they attend the
open house. Our website can be reached by searching “All Star Basketball Camp” on
any search engine site (google, yahoo, bing, etc)
Once the parents begin to sign up their children for camp they may recommend it to
their friends. The future campers may also tell their friends about the camp and
convince them to sign up too. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to receive a
great enrollment. Our staff can also spread the news about our camp to their friends
in family to help create more business.

Website
The internet has become a very useful tool to help advertise a new business.
Therefore, we created a website to help explain our camp. The website will be
accessible through any search engine as well as advertised on our flyers. The website
explains our purpose and goals for the camp. The website outlines all key points
about the camp. A sample schedule is available to help explain how the camp will be
run.
We have certain sections on our website that explain our liability and safety policy.
All campers must sign a waver that states they are aware and accept the terms on
these policies. The waver forms are accessible for our customers convince on our
website. These policies are to ensure the safety of our camp, employees and most
importantly our campers!

Final Summary
The key to our success is to be organized, create a great learning environment while
maintaining a qualified and hard working staff. It is important to keep all aspects of
the business balanced. In order to remain successful the staff must enjoy what they
are doing. If the staff is unhappy then it will transfer to the campers. The camps first
priority is the campers well being. Therefore, it is important to keep the campers
healthy and happy.
Our camp was created to help develop our new athletes into well rounded basketball
players. However, we also want to help the campers build their character in all
aspects of their life. Our core values are incorporated into every activity and lesson.
By promoting these values the campers will learn to respect them and incorporate
them into their daily lives.
The key to a success is to ensure that the campers will greatly improve their game by
attending our camp. Our staff must be dedicated to teaching the campers. The staff
must continue to motivate the campers to reach their full potential. The positive
encouragement will help boost the campers self confidence which is very important
when developing new athletes.
Our group has learned how important it is to be organized. When a lot of work needs
to be done everyone must work together as a team. In order for an organization to
run smoothly all employees must cooperate. We learned how important it is to
include liability into an organization.
