From the Pastor’s Desk…

Fulfilling the law by loving God and neighbor is not an original thought of Jesus. This concept has already been presented in the Hebrew Scriptures. Nevertheless Jesus presents something unique, unprecedented. Jesus establishes that we can’t have one without the other. Like the two faces on a coin they go together, or like the subject in front of a mirror and its reflection they are undivided, indissoluble, one reality. The love of God is fundamental to our identity. This is the force that drives to pray as we attempt to communicate with the divine. It drives us to celebrate the Eucharist where we are enlightened by His Word and feed by his body and blood. The love of God compels us to receive the sacraments; Eucharist, Marriage, Reconciliation. It is only in the encounter with the divine where we discover who we are as human beings. It enables us to be what we are created for and ultimately is the love of God what saves us. The love of God is deliverance, freedom, and holiness. But make no mistake, religion is not a form of escapism were we try to cover everything with the “holiness” of flowers, incense, and the blaze of candles. Such mere holiness is an illusion. So when do we exercise true holiness? It only happens when we show respect for the icon of God and love for the principal icon of God which is Jesus embodied in each other. The love of our neighbor is our answer to our love to God. When we love our neighbor we come to terms with our own humanity, is like saying “I want to be treated in the same fashion and manner that I treat others”. When we love our neighbor we do everything to get him/her closer to God. This idea is the basis for any Christian marriage; each individual must do anything in his power to bring forth redemption to his spouse. Loving your neighbor is giving them what you want for you; to be treated with dignity, to receive the peace of your fellow men and women, and to be recipients of compassion when needed. To love one’s neighbor can be a challenging enterprise. We all have an inquisitive next door neighbor. We all know the fellow who is given to all kinds of irrelevant corrections, while their children are ill mannered, or simply the co-worker that gets on our nerves. To show love under such circumstances is dreadfully difficult and requires much demand. To love our new born is very easy, is almost instinctive. To love our next door neighbor whose fence is painted in fluorescent green seems to be a different story. But we are called to love without any discrimination or distinction in the same way God loves us. Now, how to love our neighbor, especially the antagonistic one is material for another homily. We cannot call ourselves Christian and reject our neighbor. There was but only one existential rejection, the one that paid the ransom for all our sins. We must love our God with all our hearts, with all our soul, with all our mind, we shall love our neighbor just as ourselves and allow the love of God to do the rest.

Cumplir la ley de amar a Dios y al prójimo no es un pensamiento original de Jesús. Este concepto ya se ha presentado en las Escrituras hebreas anteriormente. Sin embargo, Jesús presenta algo único, sin precedentes. Jesús establece que no podemos tener uno sin el otro. Al igual que los dos rostros en una moneda van juntos, o como el sujeto frente a un espejo y su reflejo, son indivisibles, indisolubles, una realidad. El amor de Dios es fundamental para nuestra identidad. Esta es la fuerza que impulsa a orar mientras intentamos comunicarnos con lo divino. Nos

lleva a celebrar la Eucaristía donde somos iluminados por Su Palabra y alimentados por Su Cuerpo y Sangre. El amor de Dios nos obliga a recibir los sacramentos; Eucaristía, Matrimonio, Reconciliación. Es solo en el encuentro con lo divino donde descubrimos quiénes somos como seres humanos. Nos permite ser para lo que estamos creados y, en última instancia, es el amor de Dios lo que nos salva. El amor de Dios es la liberación, la libertad y la santidad. Pero no nos equivoquemos, la religión no es una forma de escapismo donde tratamos de cubrir todo con la "santidad" de las flores, el incienso y el resplandor de las velas. Tal mera santidad es una ilusión. Entonces, ¿cuándo ejercemos la verdadera santidad? Solo sucede cuando mostramos respeto por el ícono de Dios y el amor por el icono principal de Dios que es Jesús encarnado entre nosotros. El amor de nuestro prójimo es nuestra respuesta a nuestro amor a Dios. Cuando amamos a nuestro prójimo llegamos a un acuerdo con nuestra propia humanidad, es como decir "Quiero ser tratado de la misma manera en que trato a los demás". Cuando amamos a nuestro prójimo, hacemos todo para acercarlo a Dios. Esta idea es la base de cualquier matrimonio cristiano; cada individuo debe hacer todo lo que esté a su alcance para traer la redención a su cónyuge. Amar a tu prójimo le está dando a ellos lo que quieres para ti; ser tratados con dignidad, recibir la paz de sus semejantes y ser recipientes de compasión cuando sea necesario. Amar a tu prójimo puede ser una empresa desafiante. Todos tenemos un vecino inquisitivo. Todos conocemos al compañero que se dedica a todo tipo de correcciones irrelevantes, mientras que sus hijos son mal educados, o simplemente el compañero de trabajo que nos saca fuera de quicio. Mostrar amor en estas circunstancias es terriblemente difícil y requiere mucha demanda. Amar a nuestro recién nacido es muy fácil, es casi instintivo. Amar a nuestro vecino cuya verja está pintada de verde fluorescente es ser una historia diferente. Pero estamos llamados a amar sin discriminación ni distinción de la misma manera que Dios nos ama. Ahora, cómo amar a nuestro prójimo, especialmente el antagónico, es material para otra homilía. No podemos llamarnos cristianos y rechazar a nuestro prójimo. Hubo solo un rechazo existencial, el que pagó el rescate por todos nuestros pecados. Debemos amar a nuestro Dios con todo nuestro corazón, con toda nuestra alma, con toda nuestra mente, amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos y permitir que el amor de Dios haga el resto.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO The Lord's Peace be with you! As baptized Christians, we are sent on a mission to love. The love we show to our neighbor-our neighbor being everyone-should be a reflection of the love we have in our hearts for the Lord. This same Lord has given us all we are and have. We owe our very existence to God, who is love itself and who created us out of and for love. The tendency is to separate love of God and love of neighbor, but there really is no difference; for when we treat one another with respect, consideration, compassion and understanding, we are doing so to Christ who exists in and through them. We have all been created in God’s own image and likeness, and all have access to His saving grace. Through our special relationship with our Creator we have everything necessary to use our God-given intellect and free will for the Glory of God. ¡La Paz del Señor esté con ustedes! Como Cristianos bautizados, somos enviados en una misión de amor. El amor que mostramos a nuestro prójimo-o sea, a todos-debe ser un reflejo del amor que tenemos en nuestros corazones para el Señor. Este mismo Señor nos ha dado todo quien somos y tenemos. Le debemos nuestra propia existencia a Dios, quien nos creó por amor y para el amor. Nuestra tendencia es de separar el amor de Dios y amor al prójimo, pero realmente no existe diferencia; pues cada vez que tratamos a otros con respeto, consideración, compasión y comprensión, lo hacemos a Cristo que existe en y a través de ellos. Todos hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios, y todos tenemos acceso a su gracia salvadora. A través de nuestra especial relación con el Creador tenemos todo lo necesario para utilizar el intelecto y voluntad propia otorgado por Dios para Su Gloria. Día de los Difuntos -All Souls Day St. Aloysius Parish will be celebrating a bilingual Mass for ALL SOULS DAY on November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. If you would like to remember your beloved one with a cross please fill out the registration information below and submit it to the rectory and we will place the name of your beloved one on the cross. Other beloved ones can be remembered during weekday mass. We will be accepting registrations until October 28.

With holidays soon approaching there are many volunteer opportunities. This is a great time to meet, serve and love others by sharing your time, talent, and passion. Thanksgiving: • Food deliveries; unload, sort, stock (various dates) • Thanksgiving basket distribution (11/21/17) • Homeless Dinner; crowd control, set-up, set-down, clean-up crew, servers, decorators, etc. Christmas: • Food deliveries and gifts, unload, sort, stock and pack • Christmas basket and gift distribution • Linden House Santa’s Visit and Lunch
