Department Newsletter December 2014—July 2015
Our newsletter has, unfortunately, taken a backseat for awhile. We’re back and have much catching
up to do. Grab a cup of coffee and let us tell you what’s been happening in the department.
Our new Safety Committee leadership also began their terms
on Safety Day. Don Autry (pictured above on left) was elected
as Chair and Jim Mohr (pictured above on right) was elected as Chair-Elect. Both are members of
the Electric Shop.
Winners of the Facilities Employee Recognition awards were:
Be Alert, Accidents Hurt!
As part of the Business Affairs restructuring, Surplus Warehouse Services
joined Facilities Operations effective July 1, 2015. Within Facilities
Operations, Surplus Warehouse Services will report to Ben Kunka, Supervisor
of the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling (OWRR).
We welcome Eric Laudenbacher, who takes care of the many aspects of the
warehouse!
The annual Facilities Safety Day was held on Thursday, June
18, 2015. Our guest speaker this year was Jason Stogner, the
Director for the Office of Emergency Management. Employee
Recognition awards were also announced. Hot dogs and
hamburgers were served under the Oak tree near the Sink
Building afterwards.

I just wanted to send you a note commending
Hal and his team for keeping the ice removed
from the entrances of 1100 West Market Street.
As usual, it was completely ice-free for the
entire week during very difficult conditions.
Trace Little
Director of Materials Management
I’d like to thank Chris Cardwell for his quick response to my
concern about the icy sidewalk next to the Ferguson Building
this morning. Both his timely return phone call and the
clearing of the walk are to be commended.
We really appreciate all the work you do to keep us safe on
campus!
Dr. Susan Phillips
Communication Science & Disorders
Thanks very much to Dan, Jon, Douglas, and your teams for efforts directed to protect building systems during the
very cold temperatures last week. I know 4 and 6 degrees are not “design conditions” and present a serious test
to building systems, requiring extraordinary measures.
I appreciate your work in minimizing the impact of these severe temperatures (at least for Greensboro) on our
systems and the comfort of students, faculty, and staff.
Well Done!
Jorge Quintal
Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities
I appreciate all of Vince Whitt’s help
since I have moved to Housing and
Residence Life. He has been great
with providing us a metal trailer and
emptying it as needed. Also when I
called him about helping us compact
the 30 yard dumpster to give us more
room, he was here with the backhoe
right away. You have been
wonderful and so much more helpful
than you realize.

Be Alert, Accidents Hurt!
Thanks very much to ALL for your efforts in removing snow and ice. I
am frequently amazed of the commitment and organization your team
displays during these events.
Several folks have approached me to let me know how much they
appreciate your efforts.
UNCG is fortunate to have you all here, I know I am proud of your
work on behalf of the students. Please extend my gratitude to your
team members.
Thank you,
Jorge Quintal

Kudos to you and your staff for the
amazing job they have done with
cleaning up the campus from the
ice—an incredible undertaking.
Please pass along my congrats to
everyone in the Facilities Operations
Department!

I just wanted to take a few minutes to tell you how much we appreciate
having both Jossee Messan and Helen Burns in our building. Mossman
Building has never looked better. Case in point, a co-worker accidentally
spilled water on the floor in the ladies room yesterday. When we wiped it
up, we were delighted to see that the paper towel was clean after mopping
up the water.
I can also speak from personal experience that my allergy attacks have
lessened greatly since their arrival.
Thank you so much! Their friendly and smiling faces are a pleasure to see
each day.

Good-bye to our Retirees . . .
We also wish to recognize Sandy Ingram and James Sutton in Facility
Services, each of whom retired at the end of June. They retired with 8 and 14 years of service, respectively. We
were sad to see them go, but we wish them happiness in their retirement.
Congratulations to Ivan Lyall and Vickie
DeBari for successfully completing the APPA
Supervisor’s Toolkit. It’s a full week of
training specifically designed for facilities
management.
As a commitment to the employees of the Facilities Operations Department, all supervisors and managers were
asked to complete the Supervisory Essentials program at UNCG. Those who have completed the training to date
are: Chris Aaroe, David Alcon, Peter Ashe, Joe Borden, Douglas Cato, Vickie DeBari, Gary Denny, Paul Dow,
Willie Dowd, Terry Goins, Tom Hailey, Travis Holcomb, Bob Johnson, Ben Kunka, Ivan Lyall, Guy McGayhey, Jeff
Melton, Hoyte Phifer, Greg Poteat, Debbie Reynolds, Lester Rogers, Hal Shelton, and Jon Soter.
Congratulations to all!
Congratulations to Ben Kunka for successfully completing the
APPA Institute for Facilities Management in January. The
curriculum is composed of four core areas, 1) General
Administration and Management, 2) Maintenance and
Operations, 3) Energy and Utilities, and 4) Planning, Design, and
Construction. Each core area is completed in a week-long
session.
We have had several retirements since our last newsletter. John Pearce,
2nd Shift Facility Services supervisor and Michael Hall, Facility Services
housekeeper, both retired in January with 23 years of service each. Dale
Williams, Buildings and Trades manager, retired in February with 17
years of service. Jeannie Lasley, admin support, retired in December
with 8 years of service in Facilities Operations. Each of these employees
took a wealth of knowledge and many years of service with them when
they left.

Tree Campus USA
Once again, Facilities Operations Grounds Department has won
Tree Campus USA. This is our sixth year in a row obtaining this
prestigious award. Congratulations to our Grounds crew who work
hard despite cold weather in the winter, hot weather in the summer,
and everything else in between. We appreciate each and every
one of you and the job you do!
Pictured below are a few members of our Grounds Crew planting
trees in honor of Earth Day.

The Safety Committee is open to anyone within Facilities who would like to volunteer for a two-year
term. Please contact Don Autry by phone (256-0434), e-mail ([email protected]), or in person if you
would like to volunteer. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month in the Campus Supply
Training Room at 10:00 AM.
Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages — and they are the leading cause of
death for Americans ages 1 to 44. The good news is everyone can get involved to help prevent
injuries.
The National Safety Council (NSC), a member of the American National Standards Institute, promotes
and sponsors National Safety Month. During this month, the NSC helps individuals to prevent injuries
and accidental deaths by bringing attention to common injuries and health risks. Facilities Operations
supports that effort through the examination of the leading causes of injuries in the workplace and
finding solutions on how they can be prevented. This June, we encouraged employees to learn more
about important safety issues like transportation safety, slips, trips, and falls, and strains and sprains..
Transportation safety: Doing other activities while driving — like texting or eating — distracts you
and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 5 crashes (17%) that injured someone
involved distracted driving.
Slips, trips, and falls: One in 3 older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and
other health problems.
Sprains and strains are preventable in every workplace. Aspects of work tasks that can lead to
fatigue, musculoskeletal disorder symptoms and injuries, and other types of problems may be
present in one or more tasks you perform. Contributing factors that employers and employees
should be aware of include:
Awkward postures
Repetitive motions
Forceful exertions
Pressure Points
Vibrations

Lloyd Norman, a housekeeper in Facility Services since
February 2003, unexpectedly passed away on June 8, 2015.
Effective 6/15/2015, the Facilities Operations’ Work Information Center (WIC) will be known
as the Customer Service Center (CSC). This has been done in an effort to help our external
customers have an easier time contacting the department and getting information about our
services. Please let Ivan Lyall know if you find WIC or Work Information Center on any
websites or signage so that it can be updated.

Shred-A-Thon
OWRR did a great job hosting the annual
Shred-A-Thon again this year. Open to
UNCG faculty, staff, and students as an
opportunity to shred paper documents for
free, an impressive 15 tons of paper were
shredded at this event.

Surplus Warehouse Services Sale
Even though Surplus Warehouse Services didn’t officially report to OWRR until July 1, 2015, some
employees in Facilities Operations provided extra manpower for the public sale on Friday, June 19th,
7:30 AM - 11:00 AM.
Cram and Scram
This year’s annual rummage sale of 7.5 tons of student items left behind after moving out was held
on Saturday, May 30th. Hundreds of people arrived to take advantage of the bargain deals that help
to keep the materials from landfill disposal. This year, the sale collected about $1,100; everything not
sold was donated to Goodwill.
You really never know what you’ll find on campus. Often it’s the Grounds employees, who are routinely out and
about, that come across many unusual sights. May 11th was no different. A baby raven was spotted in a tree
between Curry and Moore Humanities buildings by Eddie Taylor and Ben Evans. A baby raven might not be so
unusual, but the fact that the baby hopped out of the tree right onto the employees’ hands and was very
agreeable to being petted while the raven’s mom watched was very unusual. Hal Shelton, who took the
pictures, said he’s never seen anything like it.
