Curriculum Development: Innovative Approaches to Resident EducationBy Drs. Jay Ladde & Erich HeineEmergency medicine residency education is constantly evolving. Join us as we discuss implementing exciting and invigorating ideas into the residency curriculum, including self-directed learning methods, innovative teaching formats and educational supplements to traditional didactics.

10:40 AM–11:20 AM

Delivering Effective Learner-Centered Feedback By Dr. Matt RyanProviding feedback in a busy ED has its limitations. This session will define the importance of learner-centered feedback and how to provide feedback using “good judgment” in the ED. We will also review several models regarding the cognitive and emotional dynamics affecting learners.

11:20 AM–12:00 PM

Implementing Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice in EM ResidentsBy Drs. Mark Supino & Kelly MedwidRapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) is a team-based simulation method consisting of progressively more challenging rounds with frequent pauses at any incorrectly performed critical action. Debriefing is done via quick bursts of feedback—or micro-debriefing—and then the scenario starts over. This allows for more repetitive, deliberate practice until mastery is achieved. Learn how to implement RCDP into a simulation curriculum for EM residents during this session.

12:00 PM–1:00 PM

Treating Hemophilia A in the Emergency DepartmentBy Dr. Joanna Davis

Prevention and treatment of bleeds in the ED for patients with hemophilia A is challenging. This lecture will review the latest evidence and provide you with the tools needed to provide safe & effective care for these patients.

Resuscitating Your Chart: Aligning the Critical Care You Provide With the Services You ClaimBy Drs. Jason Adler & Andrea Brault

Approximately 5%-20% of your patients will be critically ill. There is a significant gap in what providers consider critical care and what they claim at the end of the encounter. We often lack sufficient training in documentation, but the implications can affect your revenue line, malpractice risks and compliance. What you don’t know can hurt you.

1:30 PM–2:00 PM

Understanding MAT’s Value in the ED’s Care for Opioid Use DisorderBy Dr. Aaron Wohl

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a rapidly growing and increasingly deadly national health crisis. Evidence is consistently pointing to the use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as a critical element of successful treatment. Lee Health began an initiative to increase access to MAT for OUD patients by initiating MAT in the ED setting. Learn about OUD patients, benefits and limitations of available medications, and how to initiate MAT in the ED in this session.

11:00 AM–11:30 AM

TachydysrhythmiasBy Dr. Marshall Frank

Let’s review the differential diagnosis of tachycardias. We’ll discuss broken down to narrow-complex regular tachycardias, narrow-complex irregular tachycardias, wide-complex regular tachycardias, wide-complex irregular tachycardias, and how to identify each one. This will be followed by a discussion on how to properly manage tachydysrhythmias.

11:30 AM–12:00 PM

“Why Don’t You Get Better Already?” Counter Transference & Medical DecisionsBy Dr. Veronica Tucci

Bias provides an incomplete explanation of provider reactions towards patients. Most providers are not aware of their biases. Cultural competency training is helpful, but not enough. This presentation will introduce the concept of instant countertransference ICT & illustrate how it can be used in psychiatric and emergency medical settings.

12:00 PM–12:30 PM

Acute Management of Orthopedic Injuries for the EPBy Dr. James (Jace) Provo

While orthopedics represents up to 20% of our practice, we are traditionally bad at it. The orthopedic curriculum needs to be significantly addressed to provide better patient care and improve relationships with our orthopedic colleagues. This lecture will improve orthopedic knowledge for the most commonly seen non-fracture pathologies in the ED: the shoulder, knee and ankle.
