The site comprises the five allotments on the west side of Kensington Road which are within the circle. Heritage Listings The site is not on the Victorian Heritage Register nor the Australian Heritage Database. Nos. 176-180 Kensington Road, Apollo Soap and Candle Works. is included in the Victorian Heritage Inventory as D7822-0491 but the site has been delisted. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) maintains a file (B7034) on Nos. 180-194 Kensington Road, Kensington (identified as Apollo Candle Works). In summary, no statutory listings affect the site. A brief history of the Apollo Soap and Candle Works is included in the Victorian Heritage Database:

This site was formerly used as a soap and candle works which was established in 1873. The factory had close links with the Melbourne Meat Preserving Company, where it obtained tallow products used in their manufacturing processes. The company produced industrial and household soaps, as well as glycerine for the explosive factory further upstream. Former 'closet accommodation' (toilets) for over 200 employees was once located on the river banks and discharged directly to the river. It is likely that users of this site would have accessed the river for transport, however no documentation or local knowledge was found to indicate the presence of a service wharf. The river frontage of this area is now covered by bluestone beaching. One of many noxious industries in the area.

The Apollo Soap and Candle Works also had premises at Footscray. Site Description Refer also to photographs at the end of this assessment. The site comprises vacant land at the south-west used for parking, coach washing and sundry other uses. There is nothing of any heritage significance or interest on this portion of the site. Further east at Nos. 180-194 Kensington Road, is a brick and bluestone structure and a large brick structure with a fenced yard (self-storage warehouse) which has been considerably altered at different times. The only element of any heritage interest is the remnant coursed ashlar wall elements, now more resembling pillars, at various points along the external walls. Other than providing a clue to the early date of this building (1873), the stonework provides no evidence whatsoever of the original appearance of the building which has now been lost completely. This building may have been associated with a ship builder. Further east again at Nos. 176 – 180 Kensington Road is a long narrow manufacturing building (plastic bags) constructed from brick and corrugated steel which is mostly overpainted. From the bond of the brick it is evident that the building is not of great age (c.1960s) but is somewhat dilapidated and run-down. This is the site of the Apollo Soap and Candle Works. (At the east end of the site abutting the railway line at 156 – 174 Kensington Road is a concrete office complex (Scalzo Food Industries), a garden and car park. The only element which exhibits any heritage fabric is the bluestone and brick building (Nos. 180-194 Kensington Road) which is considerably altered and retains only portions of the walls, at various locations. Before demolition, it would be useful to prepare an archival photographic record of the building and lodge it in the Picture Collection of the State Library of Victoria. Other than for the above recommendation, there is nothing of any heritage significance or even interest whatsoever which would require any type of management or recording and demolition of all the structures and elements is acceptable.
