SPORTS KORNER – “KICKS IN THE GRASS”Our youth and adult teams began league and cup play in September. Best of luck to all players and coaches this year. Follow us on our Facebook page or check out our new website at www.vesoccer.org for game schedules and the latest news from VE Soccer. The Sports Committee would like to thank tournament director Christine Kehan and her army of volunteers for their hard work in making VE’s Summer Splash tournament a successful event. The club and our soccer program were put in a very positive light and the 106 teams who took part enjoyed their time with us.A special thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make our Oktoberfest a resounding success. This year we honored our U16 boys’ and U18 girls’ teams who competed at the USYS National Championships this past summer. The boys returned as national champions and the girls finished third. Additionally, EPYSA’s CEO Chris Branscome was on hand to say a few words and present VE Soccer with a generous financial grant to be used for the lighting at the turf field.  Lastly, October 4th marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of Jerry Oesterreich. As a coach, Jerry had a big impact on a whole generation of VE players and took several teams to Germany. Many of his former players are still involved with VE as coaches or board members. I’m sure he’d be pleased with the current state of our soccer program. Prosit Jerry!  The next Sports Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3rd, at 8:00pm.
