Because of its connection with the baptismal promises, the Roman Missal recommends that the faithful recite the Apostles' Creed on the Sundays of Lent and Easter. At Mass on Sunday, the Apostles’ Creed may be found on the inside front cover of our parish hymnals. It is printed here for use in your daily prayer:
Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
All bow at the following words up to and including: …..the Virgin Mary
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven; and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen.

"LET US FAST IN SUCH A WAY THAT WE LAVISH OUR LUNCHES UPON THE POOR, SO THAT WE MAY NOT STORE UP IN OUR PURSES WHAT WE INTENDED TO EAT, BUT
RATHER IN THE STOMACHS OF THE POOR." (An Advent Sourcebook: The Forty Days, Book One, p. 72).
We begin the First week of Lent as we always do, in the desert. The desert was always seen as a place of mystery, and of encountering God. The desert was filled with unusual and unknown experiences, which could easily fright-en people. In the desert there were two elements, heat and sand. So Jesus is brought to the desert to encounter the personification of evil, Satan. Jesus was tempted as we are all tempted by prestige and power. But he never gave in to the tempter, because of his relationship with the Father. Our difficulty is that it is too easy to give in to power, prestige, titles and positions, thinking that we are greater than we really are. Our greatness comes from our relationship with God, as expressed in Jesus Christ. But it is so easy to get lost in ourselves, thinking that with all we have accomplished in life, we don't need or want God. This is why we have Lent. This is the time the church gives to us so that we can take a look at our lives to see whether they are consistent with what our faith in Jesus means. In other words, we have to look at our lives to see what changes we need to make so that we can better reflect the presence of Christ in them. For some of us, it may not require a great deal of change, only a little bit. But for others, it may require a great deal of work to improve our lives and our relationship with God. Only we know what needs to done, so we have 40 days to work on our relationship with God so that we are prepared to celebrate the Great Feast and Season of Easter. But we have a problem with Lent. We tend to do the same thing each year, giving things up and thinking we are really sacrificing. Sacrifice is meant for us to change our ways and our lives, and that only happens when we make serious attempts to change our words, our attitudes and our actions. Usually we go back after Lent to what we have "given up," without any real change in our lives. Lent is about conversion, from turning away from ourselves and turning to God, so that we can better reflect his life in ours. Lent is a serious time for people who are serious about improving their relationship with God so that they can better improve their relationship with others. Don't worry about giving up candy, or smoking or whatever else you might do this season. This is a time to work on becoming a better person, one who reflects the love of Christ in life. Maybe it requires us to be more gentle and kind with our parents, children, siblings and co-workers. This is much more difficult and requires a great deal more effort than giving anything up for Lent. This might make your Lent much more rewarding than in years past. As you entered the church, you may have noticed as few additions. There is a reliquary with the relics of St. John Neumann, St. Theresa of the Little Flower, St. Anthony, Padre Pio, and the True Cross. In addition, there are icons of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Saints of the Americas and of a family who was a part of the Church of Our lady of the Assumption, Bayonne. These were all given to me to preserve, and the best place is in our church. Thanks to Deacon Art and his son-in-law, Chuck, for installing them for your benefit. HAPPY LENT!!!
FR. JOE

LENTEN REGULATIONS
The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity.
Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to Fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.
The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.
The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.
The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14, 2016 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, May 22, 2016.
*Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

THE PATRIOTIC ROSARY
OFFERED IN CONSECRATION OF OUR NATION
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2016
We will begin at approximately 8:30AM, immediately following the conclusion of the 8:00AM Mass
The Patriotic Rosary is a beautiful and powerful prayer asking for God’s protection and guidance for our Nation. While praying the traditional Catholic Rosary we will dedicate one Hail Mary to each state of the United States. We will also pray for our national leaders and for the leaders of our Catholic Church. Inspiring patriotic music will be incorporated throughout the Rosary. This will include favorites such as America the Beautiful, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America, and more. Brief letters written by George Washington, John Adams and oth-ers will be read during the Rosary. These letters touch on our Heavenly Father’s guiding love in the develop-ment of our nation. The Rosary, patriotic music, and historical readings ---- all coming together as we ask for God’s protection and mercy for our Nation.
Please join the St. James Deacons and the St. James Parish Family as we pray The Patriotic Rosary.

LENTEN ALMSGIVING FEBRUARY 27/28
The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).
Are you ready for Lent? Visit our Lighthouse Catholic Media kiosk in the Gathering Area. We will be stocking new CD titles perfect for your Lenten experience!
We encourage you to also visit:
www.lighthousecatholicmedia.org
and click on the store tab. You can view the hundreds of titles available for us to offer you or for you to order on your own. You can let us know what titles or catego-ries you are most interested in listening to.
MY BELOVED SON: MEDITATIONS FOR LENT
Bishop Robert Barron offers five sermons on the spiritual discipline we must cultivate in the Lenten season, a discipline centered in Christ. These medita-tions cover topics such as finding our identity in God, prayer as the key to mission, our thirst for God, how to end our alienation from God, and how to joyfully em-brace the way of happiness.
We hope you enjoy and use this kiosk often!
PARISH SCHOOL NEWS
Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal Los estudiantes de Saint James pueden hablar
Espanol ! (Saint James students can speak Spanish!)
It is very exciting to see how much interest Spanish is getting at Saint James the Apostle School at this point in this school year. Intro to World Language is taught to students in PreK-3 up to 5th grade by Mr. Eligio Cruz.
Pre-K classes are matching colors and numbers in Spanish as well as recognizing shapes. However, it is the fact that our PreK-classes are learning to pray in Spanish. Praying in Spanish makes the language very relevant in transmitting the Catholic faith while improv-ing language skills.
The Kindergarten class has begun learning how to recognize the four seasons and weather patterns for each one of them. Through the use of flash cards, students are learning how to pronounce and say weather conditions. Using pictures representing specific weather conditions, students are learning how to say “cloudy”, “windy”, “snow” and “rain”. In addition, Kindergartners are learning how to recognize and say body parts from head to toe, while continuing to im-press Senor Crus with their counting to 20 skills.
First graders are very enthusiastic in learning new vocabulary words involving objects they easily recognize and relate to such as house, car, bed, chair, table and others words to identify food and animals. They are learning to form phrases using names, shapes and colors. Fantastico!
Second grade is learning how to use phrases such as “No entiendo” which means “I do not understand”, “Como se dice?” which means “How do you say?” and phrases corresponding to commands such as “Baja la mano” which means “lower your hand.”
The third, fourth and fifth grades are reading short stories at different levels and Spanish publications dealing with topics of current events and comprehen-sion to introduce of new vocabulary words into their discussion.
We are making Spanish relevant to the students at Saint James the Apostle School! Intro to World Language is a minor subject and classes meet once per week. When students enter the 6th grade, World Language becomes a major subject and classes meets more fre-quently.

Saint James is pleased to announce that we will again be hosting families from Family Promise of Union County for two weeks this year! Families will arrive on Sunday, June 26 and depart Sunday, July 10. If you were a volunteer last year, help spread the word by encouraging family, friends and neighbors to join us! All parishioners volunteering for activities and /or overnight stays must have Protecting God’s Children Training and agree to a Background Check. The link to “sign-up genius” will be available on our website in May. This year we will purchase the privacy “walls” to transform Hatcher Hall into their living quarters, we will need much help to erect the walls, hang drapes and set up their rooms. Donations toward the purchase of the materials for the “walls” are now being accepted. Please contact Nancy Caputo for volunteer application, donations and for more information. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
