Who do you think of when you think of a good leader?
+Defining Community Building
What does Community Building mean to you? Take a minute and discuss with a partner how you
define Community Building Questions to Consider…
What is community? What communities are you a member of? What’s the benefit of being part of a community?
+Defining Community Building
Community Building – the act of connecting others in relationship with each other in a way that enhances the sense of interdependence, mutuality, and shared destination (Roper, 2012)
+How does Leadership and Community Building Intertwine? Why put these two together? What is the value of incorporating leadership and
community building? Learning more about what it means to be a leader and
acquiring skills and knowledge in the area of community building will help all of us reach a common goal. The goal will help us enhance our personal awareness of our own and others’ leadership strengths, while also providing opportunities to develop skills to enhance the sense of relationship, communication and connections within groups.
+As leaders we must start with SelfAsk Questions like: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What do I hope to get done? What matters to me?

+Scenario…
Remember when you first stepped onto campus for your first day. This could be for Orientation or your first day in class. How did it feel? Did you know anyone? Did you feel like you fit in? Did you feel like you mattered?
+Marginality and Mattering
Marginality Feelings of not fitting in Produces feelings of self-consciousness Creates an inability to perform at one’s usual ability
level. Characterized by feeling unnoticed, ignored,
unrecognized, and disconnected from others
+Marginality and Mattering Continued…Mattering How much do I matter to others? Feeling we belong and matter to others Others are interested in what happens to us,
empathize with us, and/or appreciates us Feeling that we are needed by the people around us Is positively related to self-esteem Promotes a healthy and successful transition.

1. Attention – feeling noticed2. Importance - the belief one is cared about3. Ego extension - feeling that someone will be proud
