IT IS SAID THAT AROUND 500 BCE, DURING THE SPRING & AUTUMN PERIOD IN CHINA, THERE LIVED A MAN WITH THE SURNAME SUN AND GIVEN NAME WU. OUT OF RESPECT FOR HIS GREATNESS, THE SUFFIX ZI IS ADDED TO HIS SURNAME, JUST LIKE IN KONGZI (CONFUCIUS), MENGZI (MENCIUS), AND ZHUANGZI. HE IS SAID TO HAVE LIVED IN THE STATE OF QI AND IS CREDITED WITH HAVING WRITTEN THE THIRTEEN CHAPTERS OF SUNZI BINGFA, OR SUNZI’S PRINCIPLES AND TACTICS OF WARFARE.

HE ONCE PRESENTED THIS BOOK TO KING HELÜ OF WU.

I HAVE READ YOUR BOOK, SIR, AND I AM WONDERING IF YOU

COULD USE IT TO TRAINA CONTINGENT

HERE AND NOW.

FANTASTIC! THIS IS

WONDERFUL!

YES.

YES.

YES.

COULD YOU DO IT USING WOMEN?

YES, SIR.

OF COURSE I CAN.

DO YOU ALL KNOW THE POSITIONS OF YOUR HEART,

LEFT AND RIGHT HANDS, AND YOUR BACK?

SO THE KING ORDERED 180 WOMEN FROM HIS HAREM ONTO THE FIELD. SUNZI THEN ORGANIZED THEM INTO TWO UNITS, WITH THE KING’S TWO FAVORITE CONCUBINES AS LEADERS. THEN HE EQUIPPED EACH PERSON WITH THE WEAPON OF THE TIMES, THE DAGGER-AXE.

LISTEN CAREFULLY TO MY ORDERS AND ACT ACCORDINGLY!

AH! SPARE ME!

SUNZI, I SEE THAT YOU CAN INDEED CONDUCT MILITARY OPERATIONS, BUT

IF I LOSE MY TWO MOST BELOVEDCONCUBINES, I’LL LOSE INTEREST

ALTHOUGH KING HELÜ WASN’T HAPPY ABOUT WHAT HAD JUST OCCURRED, HE UNDERSTOOD

THAT SUNZI REALLY KNEW HOW TO ORGANIZE AN ARMY, AND

LATER HE ENDED UP EMPLOYING SUNZI AS HIS GENERAL.

THEREAFTER, HE TOOK HIS TINY COUNTRY OF WU AND THRUST

WESTWARD INTO CHU, TAKING YING, THE CAPITAL; THEN HE

WENT NORTH INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS AND

STRUCK FEAR INTO THE STATES OF QI AND JIN.
