The Ascension of the Lord

Let us pray

on this day of Ascension as we watch and wait for Jesus' return:

Father in heaven, our minds were prepared

for the coming of your kingdom when you took Christ beyond

our sight so that we might seek him in glory.

May we follow where he has led and find our hope in his glory,

for he is Lord forever. Amen

During the upcoming week, the first reading continues from the Acts of the Apostles. We are following the preaching and ministry of Paul. We can feel his intensity as he urges the Ephesians to follow his example in living the faith “I served the Lord with all humility and with the tears and trials that came to me...” He returns to Jerusalem to face persecution but remains under house arrest, teaching and meeting with followers. The gospels are from John's Gospel, chapters 16 and 17. Jesus warns his disciples that they will be scattered and says they will find trouble in the world but assures them he has conquered the world. Jesus' prayer reflects the passionate, inseparable nature between him and his Father. “I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.” “I pray ... that they may all be one ... as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us.” Jesus challenges Peter three times to “feed my sheep” and the Easter season comes to a close as John's gospel concludes on Saturday. These wonderful readings end: “There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.” Taken from the "Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer" on the Creighton University's Online Ministries website: http://www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/online.html. JUNE 2, 2019 ASCENSION OF LORD

JUNE 3-8, 2019, 7TH WEEK OF EASTER

S M R Acts 1:1-11 Psalm 47 Ephesians 1:17-23

Luke 24:46-53

“U ntil next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!” Not today’s

scriptural wisdom, but legendary DJ Casey Kasem’s sage advice, heard across America for generations, American Top 40’s challenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn’t quoting scripture, today’s Acts of the Apostles offers similar advice. As Jesus ascended, disciples “were looking intently at the sky.” Wouldn’t we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heart-breaking focus on this blood-stained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus’ first disciples, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should “keep reaching for” heaven, we need to “keep our feet on the ground.” Ascension’s scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as “ascended into heaven” lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our recognition and loving service. D uring Lent we challenged you: “Don’t give up, give back” by using the 40 days to consider joining one of the Liturgical Ministries that serve our parish. We continued the rally during the celebration of the Easter Season. We

are an Easter people, we are a Eucharistic people, and the Mass is the source and summit (in the words of Vatican II) of our faith. And so we continue our request. We are coming towards the end of the Easter Season; Pentecost is June 9. It’s not too late to volunteer or to support your children in learning about Christian Service by becoming an Altar Server. To better understand the ministries, contact the ministry heads listed on page 2. To volunteer, contact Alessandra Richardson at [email protected].

Msgr. Thein for a Saturday bike ride from Sacred Heart to Krog Market for breakfast. The ride will be along easy paths and is suitable for the whole family. Meet at Sacred Heart on June 15 at 9:30am (after Msgr. Thein finishes up the 9:00am Mass), and take off for a morning of fun. This marks the second breakfast bike ride, though the first was cut short by rain. Hopefully this time everyone will be able to enjoy breakfast at Krog Market.

young people from our parish received their First Holy Communion at the noon Mass. Two children, due to family obligations could not participate, so those two celebrated this milestone on May 19th, also at the noon Mass.

Congratulations to Irena Martin and Anna Barrett.

E ach week, the Recycling

Committee takes a week's worth of materials to the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM). The below picture is just one week’s worth. These are in addition to 3 large, wheeled containers of "easier" to recycle materials that are picked up from Sacred Heart each week by Conex Recycling. Join us in this effort by thinking before you throw anything in the trash.

We'd love to have you help the Recycling Committee in other ways, too. Contact Jerry Pace at [email protected].
