On behalf of the Committee of the Whitehorse Woodturners, I welcome you to the 2011 Australian Woodturning Exhibition. At the time of writing I am confident that the high standard of workmanship and the innovative designs we have come to expect, will again be evident in this year’s exhibition. I thank the members of Whitehorse Woodturners for their hard work and dedication to the promotion of Woodturning in the presentation of this exhibition. Our appreciation of the support given by members of Eastern, Forest Hill, Koonung, Manningham, and Northern Clubs, who have so willingly given their time in preparing and manning this years Exhibition. To our generous Sponsors who have continued their support in these difficult times I extend our grateful thanks and request that members, especially prize winners support their businesses mentioning our appreciation. For your information they are listed at the end of this catalogue. The committee also wishes to thank the Judges for giving their time and expertise in conducting the arduous process of comparing the various pieces to ascertain the category winners. Judges

Our thanks are extended to the judges for performing what is a difficult task. The committee has appointed two teams of judges, one team for the Open and Intermediate Sections and one team for the Novice and Student Sections.

Open & Intermediate Sections

Will Matthysen Will Matthysen is a clockmaker who makes sculptural clocks from his workshop in Warrandyte Victoria. At last count he has made 162 clocks over the past 18 years, of various shapes and sizes, and his work is represented in collections throughout Australia and the world. He studied Architecture in South Africa and London and has post graduate qualifications in Design, Clock & Watch Making, and Wood Design. He has extensive teaching experience in Architecture & Design and has won many awards for his work. These include 'Working with Wood', Exhibition Buildings Melbourne 1991; First Prize, Victorian Woodworkers Association, 1991; 'Working with Wood' Exhibition Buildings, Melbourne; Makers Mark Gallery, Melbourne,1993; 'Best Piece', Warburton Winterfest 1993; First Prize, 'Excellence in Craftsmanship', Warburton Winterfest 1996; First Prize, 'Design and Workmanship, 'Victorian Woodwork Exhibition, 1997; First Prize, Victorian Woodworkers Association,2000;First Prize, 'Excellence in Craftsmanship', Warburton Winterfest, 2000; Dame Nancy Buttfield Award for Decorative Arts Exhibition, National Trust of South Australia, November 2001.'Best Piece' Warburton Winterfest June 2003.Les West Memorial Prize, Best in Show, 2005 Bob Morrison Bob was born in London and moved back to Dunbar, Scotland, when he was 18 months old. He started turning at the age of 13 whilst at school and at home on his father’s small lathe. Bob came to Australia in 1966, met and married Lois and they lived in Mulgrave for 34 years until retiring to Pakenham in 2001. Bob has been a member of the Dandenong Woodworkers Club and the Victorian Woodworkers Association. He has membership of the Waverley Woodworkers Club and Peninsula Woodturners Guild of which he is a Foundation/Life member. He has demonstrated widely throughout Victoria and teaches at Waverley Woodworkers Club and Peninsula Wood Turning Guild. He is a past winner of Best of Show at the Australian Woodturning Exhibition and has judged at club and National Exhibitions.


5 Ian Robertson Ian started wood turning in 1977 to get away from his normal job as a mechanic. In 1981 he could not do his normal job and so he took up his hobby as a living. He started in the usual way making bowls and other craft items and trying to sell them at the craft markets but his passion has always been spindle and architectural or structural turning. Ian was approached by a couple of larger building firms and turned verandah posts, balusters and king posts for them which lead to other work including turning nine metre poles for the Scientia building at Sydney University. Ian also does turned work for restorers and artists. Other major works he has done are numerous large bollards, light posts for New Quay, the Boardwalk at Yarra’s Edge and numerous decorative posts for councils all over Australia.

Novice & Student Sections

Chris Bennett Chris is an Accountant by qualification and a Partner with Pricewaterhouse Coopers. His interest in Wood Turning began in 1986 when he saw Huon Pine coming off a lathe in streams of a metre long. He was hooked and went out and bought his first lathe. The love of turning and timber continued and in 2009 he and his Brother Brian opened Pop's Shed in Chirnside Park a one stop shop for timber, machinery, tools and accessories. Chris teaches woodturning through Pop's Shed and is a past exhibitor of The Australian Wood turning Exhibition. Charlie Chamberlain Charlie started working with wood at an early age as an apprentice Carpenter and Joiner and then as a self employed builder for over 35 years. For the past 5 years he has been working as a part time trade teacher. 17 years ago he took up French Polishing and two years later Wood turning. His first teacher and mentor was Sue Leitch. Out of the 15 years of turning 14 of them he has been running groups and serving on committees as well as teaching, turning and finishing. Charlie has had success with many entries in exhibitions and agricultural shows. He is currently serving as President of the Eastern Wood turning Club. John McBrinn John began working with wood as an apprentice carpenter and joiner in Northern Ireland at the age of 15. He worked as a carpenter in the building trade in Northern Ireland until he emigrated with his family to Australia in 1970. He worked as a sub contractor carpenter in the building trade. He took up wood turning when he retired in 2006.
