Welcome to the AWESOME 7th Grade Band

Welcome back to the best instrumental music program in the world! This year will be another great year for Sudlow Bands because of YOU!!!!! We have many great performances and trips that await us this year. You will be asked to improve your skills on your musical instrument in ways you didn’t know possible. Your past experience as band members has set the stage for you to achieve even more with each year of band. Your future as a future as a Sudlow Tiger band member and Central High School Blue Devil band member is very important this year. You are the future of the CHS Blue Devil Band program. Let me show what you have in store this year. The Awesome 7th Grade Band and lessons As a member of the band organization you will participate in all of the concerts and festivals associated with the program. Your letter grade on the report card is dependent on your participation and preparation for the performances that follow. Weekly lessons are given which you are accountable for. Each quarter you will receive 9 lessons. You must attend all lessons scheduled. If you are absent for a lesson (Holidays excluded) you have a week to get it made up or your grade is recorded as a zero. These lessons are our “tests” and, like math, geography, science, etc., to get the grade you earn, you must take the test. The practicing you do for your lesson will determine your grade. You will keep track of your practice in the front of your lesson book and parents need to sign (initial) the night before your lesson to ensure your success and commitment to your instrument.

The Awesome 7th grade band will perform at all concerts, large group festival. These are all required performances and your grade depends upon your participation at these festivals that provided to you, free of charge. The Awesome 7th Grade Band also participates at Adventureland/Drake Relays Festival of Bands. This is not required, but is always the highlight of the school year. It is expected that you will participate at this event, but there is a $80 fee involved with this event. The monies will be collected for this at a later date. The date for this is Saturday, May 7, 2016

All City Solo Festival Saturday, February 27, 2016 at North High School Learning and performing a solo is an integral part of a student’s instrumental music education experience. The Davenport Community Schools Instrumental Music Department provides an annual solo festival at North High School in February (see attached schedule of events). All Sudlow band and orchestra students are required to attend this festival. A piano accompanist compliments the wind and string solos. Working with a pianist is an important part of the solo experience. If you already have a piano teacher, church organist, musical relative or friend, feel free to contact them. If you don’t know a pianist, Annie Drahozal is available here at Sudlow to accompany your child. Annie Drahazol has knowledge and experience with this type of playing. Her fee is $30 for 34 rehearsals here at Sudlow during band class. This is the deal of a century! There is no arranging rehearsal for your child; it is all done here at Sudlow. But…….if you have your own accompanist, great. Near the end of November, students, with the help of Mr. Reiter or their private teacher, will select a solo. It is important that the student begins learning their solo in December in order to be prepared for the solo festival date. Additional information will be sent home with the students at a later date.
