BACC Board of DirectorsCreating a Healthier Workplace

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

by Pamela Miller, Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce

Without your health you have nothing. Being proactive about your own health and the health of your work place might be the key to improving your bottom line. Healthier employees are more productive, more engaged in their work, have betterattendance, and tend to be less distracted and more optimistic. As an employer, the return on investment for making small changes in the workplace can be valuable to productivity.

You probably have a clear and defined policy on sick days, but have you considered a workplace wellness policy? Providing opportunities for healthy choices, flexibility in the work day, and prioritizing health can make your place of business more productive, help you to retain and attract great employees and reduce costs. First, lead by example. Make healthy choices in your own nutrition, exercise and wellness choices. Secondly, encourage employees to engage in healthy habits of their own.

“Sitting is the new smoking.” The damage done to the body by sitting for hours a day, at work or at home, is easily reconciled by getting up every hour. A quick stretch, perhaps a squat or a few lunges, can be the key to combatting the ill effects of a desk job. Ideally, adding a few walks during the day can help to improve your health. Even if you participate in a strenuous daily workout, you need to get up during the day. For those days when you are fully engaged in a project, try an app on your smart phone to remind you to “stand up.” Stand when you take a phone call.

Walk. This is a no brainer. One of the best ways to make sure you are walking each day is to commit to other people. Walking in a group provides the added benefit of socialization, which is vital to good mental health. Walking boosts immunity, combats depression and can stave off a variety of chronic conditions. During the work day, walk your meetings. Walk for errands, walk instead of sending an email and walk to and from work. Keep sneakers in your office for those days when the sun beckons you outside. Convince yourself that a healthy break is worth the time and will increase your productivity the rest of the day.

Stock your breakroom with healthy snacks. Try to choose fruits and vegetables over pre-packaged snacks. Studies show that families who display bowls of fruit on the kitchen counter weigh less. Consider stocking lemons, limes and cucumbers to naturally flavor water to boost water consumption over soft drinks. Read labels to avoid added sugar.

Exercise is a key component in happiness. Exercise releases the endorphins that make you happy. Happy people tend to be more creative, energetic and focused. Employees with unhealthy habits tend to have negative attitudes and make more mistakes, which is disruptive to the work day. Many workplaces offer 90 minute lunches for employees to work out and then return to the office recharged (and showered). Flexibility in the work day that is specifically tied to pursuing better health is another option to consider. Contact local fitness centers to inquire about discounts to businesses and encourage membership and use for your employees.

Try a health break when you are feeling that afternoon slump. Most afternoon slumps are rooted in the body’s natural rhythm, poor nutrition, inactivity and sometimes dehydration. Anticipatingthe slump by fueling up on a healthy lunch, getting out of the office during the lunch hour and getting enough sleep can help you avoid that vending machine or caffeine default. Take a walk around the block, or if you are the only one manning the store, do some deep breathing, drink a large glass of water or get that smart phone out and try a 5 minute meditation to recharge.

Encouragement is essential in motivating workers to change their habits. Commit to positive reminders to engage in healthy choices. Place a note at the bottom of the fruit bowl – “Our office consumed an apple a day today!” Make stairwells more inviting, place a motivational sign or poster on each landing. Start each month with being the person who verbally encourages co-workers, and then pass that task on. Encouraging others can bring personal satisfaction to both parties.

Create a culture of health. Allow employees to share healthy habits, recipes or fitness class information. Short morning meetings can help to set healthy intentions for the day or simply dedicate a bulletin board for sharing. While competition can be a great way to kick off your workplace wellness, sustainability will require success for all. Workers need to be invested in their own health. Consider a week or month of employees preparing a healthy snack then vote for the most popular. Recognize the winner with the privilege of selecting the breakroom snack or better yet, with a plant for their desk.

March is a great time to start on the road to improving your health. Share your ideas and success stories with other chamber members by emailing BACC. With your help and commitment, we can add ‘happier, healthier and even more productive’ to the many attributes of our chamber members.

Greetings!

I was recently asked why, whenso many small towns throughout the region are struggling, Bradford seems to be “holding its own” these days on Main Street and beyond. My immediate response was that I think what makes the difference in our community are the dedicated people who are working hard to bring renewed life to the community, and who care very much about seeing results – short and long-term.

There are numerous quotes from great social and political leaders throughout history that we’ve all heard about how caring, committed people can have an impact on the world.

Locally, we’ve been reminded this week that one year ago, our town was in the midst of the biggest water crisis it has faced in many decades. This time last year we were talking about the hard-working crews that worked diligently through sub-zero temperatures to make the repair, the staff and students at the university that made every effort to support those crew members and kept them supplied with hot coffee and much more, and businesses, organizations, and agencies – local, regional, and state – that contributed in such varied ways to provide relief to individuals throughout the community.

While we have reminisced about melting snow to manage basic household needs, the strongest memories of last year’s crisis are of caring, concerned people coming together and getting things done. And that is a theme that is seen frequently throughout the Bradford community.

Kara’s message...continued from page 3 We see it in our churches and local agencieslike the YWCA Bradford, Destinations, the Friendship Table, and the Salvation Army working together to provide support for the homeless and hungry. In our schools, the YMCA, and volunteers in youth sports leagues working alongside one another so children have opportunities to learn and play in a safe, supportive environment. In groups like the Bradford Little Theatre and the Bradford VFW’s Frances Sherman Auxiliary joining forces to raise funds for veterans’ services. The positive things that are happening are all because of caring, committed people stepping forward to make a difference. In business and economic development, the same can be said. Joint efforts of those committed to the cause can make a positiveimpact. Borrowing a few statistics from the City of Bradford’s OECD: “In the past 18 months, 13 new businesses have opened within the historic district and 29 façade improvement projects have been completed. Currently there is a wait list of 13 projects for the façade program, which will leverage a minimum of $120,000 in private investment money.” Again, we see an example of public agencies and private parties – all deeply committed to building a better community – working together to produce results.

Are they finished? Are we finished? Absolutely not. There is, and always will be, more to be done. But…one project, one building, one business at a time…good things can happen. At the Chamber, we will continue to partner with organizations like OECD, the DowntownBradford Redevelopment Corporation (DBRC), the Main Street Program, and others to work toward positive change. We will continue to promote and share the efforts of local social service agencies. And we will continue to ask you, our members, what needs you have and see both personally and throughout the area, and do what we can to work to help locate and implement solutions.

4 Tips to Make Your Business More Likeable

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

remember it and like you more because they see you as someone who values what they think. That’s all a lot of us are looking for.

Anticipate Your Customers’ NeedsAs a business you are in a position to help, whether it’s helping someone look better, feel better, be entertained, or whatever it is you do for your customers. But you are also in a position to solve problems or answer questions. Use your content and social media to help customers with problems they face in their lives. If you run a boutique, you can create posts about unique gifts for the women in your life. If you are a CPA create helpful checklists of things people should track throughout the year for effortless taxes. Be helpful. Anticipate what your customers need and then give it to them. If they know they can count on you, they will return again and again.

In today’s competitive market place it’s hard for your product alone to set you apart. Often it’s the things behind your product that will help you make a name for yourself. It’s the service, personality, and assistance you provide. These are the things that make people like you and they are also what keeps people coming back.

By Christina R. Green

People buy from people they know, like, and trust. While you might be in the right place at the right time when someone is up against it, and they may buy from you once without knowing, liking, or trusting you, for them to return, you’ll need more than luck.

Know and trust generally come along when you establish yourself as a likeable business with a human behind it. It’s difficult for people to like you if they don’t trust you, unless you’re a villain and then being untrustworthy is yourbusiness. For most of us, that is not the case. You can’t likesomeone you don’t remember, so let’s get to work on establishing the like part of the sales equation.

Share Your ReasonThink of how filmmakers or storytellers get us to like the main character. One of the ways is that they place him on a quest, or up against a challenge, that we want him to succeed in. Often it’s one we identify with. Share your reason for doing what you do. There’s probably someone in your audience or potential audience who can identify with your convictions and story. Passion is contagious.

Find CommonalitiesIn order to find commonalities, you need to share things about yourself outside of your business and how it came to be. Share your likes, be positive. Share what you love about your community or your love for bacon. Be genuine and people who see your social media posts or read your content, will begin to identify with what you’re sharing. They’ll jump in and say “me too” and you’re one step closer to getting them to like you.

Ask QuestionsIf they’re in your store or business ask them their opinion on something and really listen to their answer. On social media ask what they think or what their preferences are. Involve them in your rebranding by crowdsourcing some of your marketing decisions. People like being involved and if you really listen to, and then act on, their advice, they’ll

Bradford Little Theatre was our recent Business After Hours host at Togi’s Playhouse, with actors from “The Awesome 80’s Prom” in costume and character. The shark didn’t go to the prom, but did show up in the photo booth props/costumes that guests were able to have a little fun with that evening. Great food and a slightly different twist on networking, at a great venue - thank you, BLT!

Ideas? We are always interested to hear what our members and community partners are thinking! Do you have: • A service/resource that your company or organization needs that isn’t currently available in the area? • A Brown Bag Workshop topic (or presenter) you would like to suggest? • An idea for an event?

Stop in or give us a call to share your ideas!

CA$H MOBBRADFORD

Join us!Date: Saturday, March 19th

Time: 11:30am

Location to Meet: Public Parking Lot at the corner of Bagley Ave and East Main St.

What to bring: $20 cash to spend and your appetite

A Cash Mob is a “shop local” flash mob created to spur local economic stimulus. A group of people interested in participating in a Cash Mob are told of a time and place to gather. Generally this is on a weeknight or weekend. In order to participate, the individual(s) must be willing

to spend $20 of their own money at a local business, and be willing to have fun and meet new people. Once at the designated meeting location, the “target” or local business is identified. The Cash Mob then goes together to “mob” the local business by all spending their dedicated $20 at that particular target business.

This is a fun way to get the community engaged in shopping locally and supporting our local economy. Not only do Cash Mobs generate excitement and fun for the “mobsters,” they also generate sales for the “target”

business. Cash Mobs have been known to provide holiday sales figures for businesses on random Saturdays.

What a great way to support our local businesses!

Interested in participating in future Cash Mobs? Let us know so we can count you in on all the fun!
