hall had been whittled down through a process of qualifying rounds held in class. Class champions were now in the big leagues.

Congratulations to our Year 4 winners Jasmine Rozario (4D) and Camble Scott (4P). Some of the words in the final list for the junior competition included ‘pragmatism’, ‘aubergine’ and ‘pachyderm’.

The Year 5 Spelling Bee went right down to the wire in a closely fought contest between After a marathon 25 rounds, Yuexi was triumphant in the end, spelling the word ’hiragana’.

After 14 rounds of close competition, Year 6 put the weight of their dictionaries behind Ethan Jahani (6C) and Adie Connor (6C); they were on their own. Words such as ‘propitious’ and ‘quiescent’ came to the table as they sailed through words pronounced by spell master Miss Haigh while audience members looked on, relieved they didn’t have to spell ‘omniscient’.

The title was in Adie’s sights and, as she had hoped, the title was hers.

Congratulations to Camble, Jasmine, Yuexi and Adie who will represent our school in the regional final. We wish you the best of luck.

Students from our Student Representative Council recently spent time at lunch assisting the not-for-profit organisation Solar Buddy.

This organisation donates small solar-powered lights to children who live in marginalised communities around the world without electricity. Kerosene lanterns are the principal source of light in developing nations, but these can be dangerous and damage the environment.

Thanks to the generous donation of money by students at our Earth Hour Mufti Day held earlier this year, our school was able to purchase 50 hand-held solar lights.

Students in the SRC assembled the solar lights with the assistance of our Science teacher, Mr Mayne. These lights will be shipped to children in third-world countries, along with hand-written notes from the students who assembled them.

To date, Solar Buddy lights have been distributed in Uganda, Ghana, The Gambia, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, India and Papua New Guinea. We hope to provide you with more information when our solar lights reach their new home.

The day seemed to be a great success overall. A big “thank you” to the children for their effort and participation, which was wonderful to see. Undoubtedly, this’ ‘ effort’, was at the core of the day’s proceedings.

Much was also achieved behind the scenes. The teachers and organisers worked incessantly throughout the day to make the day flow like tick-tock, as well as before and after. The parents of course, also played their part on the day and in the preparation leading up to the event.

Athletics Carnival 10 August

Ms G. Carnegie

SRC News continued

On Thursday of Week 4 Neutral Bay staged their annual 3-6 Athletics Carnival for the first time at an exciting new venue at Olympic park, Homebush. The sun was shining and it was a magnificently warm winter’s day, perfect for a day of competitive athletics.

Our buses, bringing nearly 600 students across Sydney arrived on schedule just after 10am for the carnival to start. The house colours were vibrant and the track came to life with the 100 metre sprints. It was amazing to see so many of the students participating and giving their all for the cause.

On the track, the 100 was followed by the 200 and then the 800, with the finals of the 100 ending the programme of track events. In addition to the track, the children were able to participate in the novelty races in their year groups and the shot put too. The finalist for the long jump and high jump were also in action throughout the day, performing to the best of their abilities. There was tremendous competition going on in all events. Many were decided by really fine margins and last flung, desperate attempts to pip an opponent at the last gasp.

A Team Catch, pass, shoot...score! Today's game started out with uncertainty, as we had many injured players and pull outs. With just six players, Alex Matterson was brought up from the C1 team and played a great game with us. By half time the team was feeling confident, as we excelled at our shooting and defence. In the second half, Cammeray, our opposition, stepped up their game and we started to slow down. Eventually, we came out on top with a score of 25 to 5 our way. The A team needs to work on their passing and moving around the court faster. The player of the match is Lucy Longworth (6K) for staying energetic and quick on her feet.

Written by Team Captain, Rosie Skinner (6K).

C1 Team The ball circled around the hoop as the tension was building up. As the sweat dripped down the players,

Sports NewsAthletics Carnival 10 August continued

suddenly the ball fell into the hoop, GOAL!!! Today we played Beauty Point PS, unfortunately we lost 6-4. Even though we lost, I thought that we played out best, considering it was hot and we had no subs. I think we need to work on spreading out and jumping to intercept the ball. But, I thought we did really well at communicating and sharp passes. The player of the match was Jade Buchanan (6S) because she was always there to get the ball.

Written by Team Captain, Lucy Rockliff (5B).

C2 Team Today's game was an excellent improvement. Our team worked together to improve on our catches, throws and stepping. Our score was 15-8 Cammeray's way. Everyone went along with their positions nicely and the overall game was even. Player of the match was Charlotte Baumer-Rowley (5R), as she played exceptionally well in the second half and did a great job playing C. Her fast feet were always on the go and she was always there to catch the ball.

Written by Team Captain, Sienna Williams-Bush (6R).

D1 Team Today the D1 team played Lane Cove. It was a great game and we all played our best. Unfortunately we lost 14 to 6. However, we did not despair, because we know it is the having fun that counts. The player of the match was Sakura Yamada (6S), for always trying to intercept the ball, and despite her size, she was always there to receive the ball whenever she could, even though others may not have passed to her. As I said before, we played an excellent game and our passes were great, we just need to work on intercepting the ball from the other team.

Written by Team Captain, Conor Parkinson (5M)

D2 Team The ball flies through the air at full speed towards me. But instead of bracing myself, I quickly grasp the ball before hurling a bounce pass to GS. She positions herself, and then in slow motion the ball falls through the hoop. Today the D2 team played Artarmon on court 17. We excelled at shooting and defending, however the final score was 17 to 1 our way. We need to spread out more and get in front of our players. The player of the match was Tiffany Low (5K) because she tried her best and was always available.

Written by Team Captain, Claire Weale (5T).

The venue was a success seemingly, a new chapter was written in the history books of Neutral Bay Public School. Is Homebush to be our new home for the foreseeable future for our stella event? Who knows? We shall see in the years to come. Our next focus is on Zone, which all happens next week in Week 6. Good luck to all those who have made it through to the next level.

On reflection a great day and a great future for Neutral Bay School and Australian athletics.

Boys TeamThe sound of the whistle resonated throughout the park. It was time. Time to take on our toughest opponent yet, a team that we faced a few weeks ago, Cammeray. As we steeped on the court, there was tension in the air. The ball shot off Jacob's hands, flying into our goal circle, but Cammeray, quick with getting the rebound, and it flew to Cammeray's goal circle. The ball travelled from one end of the court to the other like a metal sphere on the Neuton Cradle.

We bounced passed, shoulder passed and chest passed our way to victory. The final whistle blows and the teams come to the edge of the court to shake hands. Miss Murray came to greet us. She was proud of even if we didn't win. But we did win! The final score was 7 to 4 our way. The player of the match was Joel Gaynor (6C). He was creating a lot of psychological pressure on his opponent. He was defending brilliantly and made lots of intercepts. We did very well with passing the ball down the court. We also marked our opponents excellently. However, we must improve in slowing down the game and zoning better. For example, there were large spaces on the court with no players in it.

Written by Team Captain, Zetian Ren (6C).

Stage News

In Kindergarten this term we are learning about life Under the Sea. We have learnt many interesting facts about lots of different sea creatures. KL has also been composing some amazing stories during writing sessions. Here are a few of them.

In the sea I met a jellyfish. He was busy so he went to whale. He was playing with mermaid so he went to dolphin but he was playing with the coral so he went to octopus but he was playing with the jellyfish.

Ollie

My shark is finding his green and brown cave. He saw an octopus. The octopus threw the ink at the shark. Next he saw Mr Turtle. Then he saw rainbow fish. Then he saw the mermaid castle. After that he saw Mr Starfish. Later he saw Mr Blob Man.

Olivia

When I was under the sea I saw a shark. His name was Coroline. I saw him swim to a puffer fish. He played with the puffer fish and had a running race. Then he heard a mermaid singing. The puffer fish was sad because the shark left to play with the mermaid.

Emily

Shark was going to the dentist. She saw jellyfish was busy eating jelly. She saw octopus. Octopus was scared and she went away. She saw a puffer fish. She was scared of it. She met a diver too. The diver gave the shark a starfish. She had a lovely day. She had fun.

Emir

I said hello to seaweed. Seaweed said hello to me. Then I went to Fish and he was having a race. I went to see moss. Moss was busy. Then I saw jellyfish. Jellyfish was dancing.

Charlie

I swam past turtle. I said, “Turtle do you want to have a race? I would like to have a race. Ready, set, go!” Shark won, and then I said “Here, have this $10,000 million!” After he saw an octopus.

Ms C Dauth - 4D Class Teacher

This term, Year 4 has been working on the text type, Narrative based on the Seven Steps to Writing Success writing program by Jen McVeity. It offers a seven-step program that provides building blocks to great writing skills which culminates in developing creative and engaging writers. 4D has just completed Step 2, Sizzling Starts, which teaches the students to start their narratives where the action is in order to gain the reader’s attention. The students participated in 5 Minute Fast Starts, an activity where they were given one minute to write a Sizzling Start to a given topic. After 5 minutes each student had produced 5 different Sizzling Starts. Here’s 4D writing their Fast Starts and sharing them with the class!

Year 1 have been focusing on adding more detail to their artwork through the use of line. We have looked at the works of colonial artists, and how the detailed drawings acted as photographs for the early explorers. We found some interesting looking leaves from around the playground and attempted to draw them with as much detail as possible. Here are some of the beautiful drawings done by 1G.

Mrs C Brown - 5T Class Teacher

We have had a very busy start to the term. On Tuesday 1st August, 5T along with 6C attended the Bell Shakespeare performance of Macbeth at the Sydney Opera House. We enjoyed a very modern and entertaining production. Coinciding with our Review Writing unit in English, 5T wrote in-depth reviews of the play. Here are some of our insightful comments:

Macduff, played by Dorje Swallow, was a memorable character, being the hero at the end. When he grieved for his wife and children, I could feel his sorrow as though it was really there.

Nina H

This version of Macbeth was played with many modern aspects, such as suits and cell-phones, alongside authentic themes such as duels and language. It was interesting to watch, but at times was almost confusing, as you had to constantly switch between today and Shakespeare’s time.

Cara H

“Bell Shakespeare’s Macbeth was a stunning experience to have at the Opera House. I was enraptured by the performance and I recommend it to all of you.

Litia T

I liked the director’s interpretation of the play. It was complex, frightening and abstract – they even used FaceTime during the killing of Banquo!

Luke S

On Tuesday 8th, we had another exciting excursion! This time to the Science Festival at the Australia Museum, where we learned how to be CSI investigators! We learned how to take fingerprint, blood, footprint and fibre samples, and then had to investigate a crime scene using these skills. I am delighted to report that we all came to the most accurate conclusion and the correct suspect was apprehended. Perhaps we have some future forensic scientists among us! We also attended a wonderful lecture on Dinosaurs still living among us (chickens, believe it or not!) and a workshop on how bees are amazing mathematicians!

The set was abstract and exposed, the characters getting up on stage and fake blood being applied in the middle of the battle scene, right in front of the viewer’s eye.

Alex M

James Evans [the director] made the play compelling, complex, dark and a bit grotesque. My favourite was the second witch scene where they creatively used a black curtain when the apparition appears to Macbeth.

up at the school gates where you can collect your cake boxes. Then after you have filled them, drop them off to the school stall on the Saturday the 9th from 8am. No nuts please. There will also be a BBQ stall with sausage sizzle and bacon and egg rolls with drinks. A coffee cart will also be onsite. Please vote at our school as we love your support.

• Saturday night 16th September 2017, The Shrek Medieval Banquet – Everyone should have received their invitation. If you haven't, then please check your child's school bag - otherwise there are spares in the office. Tickets are on sale via Flexischools website by going through your eldest child's account. Please buy your tickets ASAP to help us know numbers for catering purposes. There is no allocated seating so NO need to organise a table. If you are by yourself just turn up and you will see loads of familiar faces ready to have a drink, meal and a dance with you. It will be a fabulous night with a medieval Shrek theme, a variety of food, pig on a spit, endless supply of drinks and live entertainment all included in the price. There is also a live auction where all proceeds go directly to the school.

Uniform Order DeliveriesWe aim to deliver daily, however worse case, there will always be deliveries Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cut-off time for placing orders is 4.45pm each day.

Exchanges and ReturnsDetails of what you need to do to exchange or return an item are now being included with all deliveries. Please be sure to see these instructions and if you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] – please remember that all returned items must be unworn, in saleable condition and with the tags still attached.

Lost Jumpers – Soon a Thing of the Past!As of term 4, all new jumpers we sell will be fitted with a ‘Rag Tagd’: http://www.ragtagd.com/

Once you receive your jumper with the tag already sewn in, you send an SMS to activate the tag. Should your child lose his or her jumper, once it lands back at the lost and found stand at school (which 99% of them do), you’ll receive an SMS letting you know the jumper is there. Super easy and a fantastic product developed by a couple of High School students.

We are looking to getting tags for existing jumpers, which you will be able to purchase to sew in.

Stay tuned for more info.

Uniform Shop News Canteen News

Next week the canteen could use some extra hands. The canteen is a lovely way to contribute to the school community and feed all those hungry students a delicious fresh meal. It's a great social hub too where you can catch up with familiar faces or meet someone new! Don't forget you get rewarded with a free meal and you can serve your child/grandchild/ or niece/nephew a free Juicie!

Don't forget the 'Eat Fresh and Win' campaign is still going, so kept purchasing fresh fruit or Veg for an instant key ring prize and a chance to win an Entertainment set, an iPad, 'fresh for kids' gift pack or Movie tickets.

Volunteer AppreciationThank you to Alice Huey Mother of Toby Y5 & Chelsea Y3 and to One Thompson Grandmother of Lucile Y4 & Nico Y1 who are enjoying a yummy treat after volunteering in the canteen
