President’s Message May 2019

The Winter that started back on November 13 is finally over. Even though it dragged on, our PROBUS Club managed to keep

active. On March 19, ten brave members took part in a session of “Axe Throwing”. They threw hatchets with one hand. They threw

regular axes with long handles using both hands. Harrison, our coach gave us a demonstration of throwing “underhand” and throw-

ing two hatchets at the same time. There were no injuries and everyone had a good time.

John Tindale gave a wonderful presentation at the April general meeting, taking questions about hearing and hearing aids. John

is a “Hearing Instrument Specialist” and is well versed and a great presenter. All members were able to hear John as he spoke about

the disability of not being able to hear. This subject was of great interest as a lot of members struggle with this condition.

On April 16 we had 24 members visit the “Cook Dairy Farm” and enjoyed a tour of an amazing large high tech farming operation.

Bryan Cook, the owner, spent one and half hours taking us through and explaining the workings of the facility that included four

robots that automatically milked the cows 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Looking forward to the Spring and Summer months, our Club has several Social Events and Speakers lined up to keep our mem-

bers active. So please bring a friend. Maybe they would like to join the club and take part in the action.

THE SOCIAL JUNCTION May 14, 2019 Beattie’s Distillers Tour and Sampling

Beattie’s have been making vodka on their family farm for a

few years now. Before bottling it, they cut 15% of the run to

remove the “head” and “tail”, so every bottle is all “heart”. This

leaves you with a smooth, buttery, creamery taste and feel that

could only come from a farm-crafted potato vodka. They’re

pretty happy with it. We will meet at 10:30 AM on Tuesday,

May 14 2019, at 6673 13th Line, Alliston. The cost for the tour

and sampling is $10 per person. (A designated driver is highly

recommended.) Lunch will be held afterwards at Boston Pizza,

27 Young Street, Alliston.

See Dallas Stinson for further information

June 18, 2019 McLean Engineering. We will meet 11:00 AM. Located at 1000 Raglan Street, Collingwood. Tour through the facilities.

July - to be determined

PROBUS TRAVEL

APRIL GUEST SPEAKER

John Tindale

John is a Hearing Instrument Specialist with his clinic Beach Hearing Ltd in Wasaga Beach. John began his presentation by asking everyone to list what they think are some of the reasons why people lose some of their hearing. Numerous reasons were presented, including the number one reason, aging. Some other important reasons were: working for a long time in a noisy envi-ronment, extremely loud noises [e.g. bomb explosion on a battlefield], disease or virus, radiation and injury.

The cost of the hearing exam is free. If you choose to purchase a hearing device, the provincial govern-ment will give $500.00 toward the cost. In all hearing clinics, there are several price ranges to choose from.

As in all health related matters, protect your hearing. When operating loud machinery [lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.] wear your ear protection.

Have the travel bug? You can actually afford a trip?

Gene shared with us his life story, from his birth in Nooten Zuil (a village that “time has forgotten”) British Guiana, now Guyana, the only “English official language” country in South America to his retirement at the beach. Gene was the 7th and last child born to Andresia and Herman. Following 3 of his siblings Gene and the rest of the family emigrated to Canada in 1956. Gene grew up and was educated in Scar-borough before receiving a B.Sc. in Applied Psychology in 1973 from the Univ. of Toronto where he met his 1st wife. Time passes...marriage, two children, stints at Canada Metal Co. and Ontario Hydro, homes in East York, Oshawa and Gene finds himself declared surplus in 1992. But Gene lands on his feet and ends up as a Senior Buyer at 800 Kipling Ave. There he meets his 2nd and current wife Vincy. More time passes… marriage, more children, more moves (including Brampton), promotions until retirement in 2006.

MEMBER’S PROFILE: Gene Stephenson

Gene and Vincy have lived in Wasaga Beach since 2008 and have a blended family of three children, two girls and a boy and have 7 grandchildren altogether, 4 girls and 3 boys. They are involved in a number of clubs including tennis, PROBUS (New Waves Probus, for Vincy) and Beachcombers mixed (for Gene). They love to travel and have been on a number of cruises including Alaska, Eastern Mediterranean (including Cairo), the Caribbean, Panama Canal, The Baltic that was highlighted by two days in St. Petersburg, Russia, and around South America. Gene also likes to DJ and has done so for

the tennis club and The Beachcombers PROBUS Club. He

has the equipment equipment and music to provide a variety of dance tunes.

Thank you Gene for sharing your story with us.

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob 's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old John Deere tractor.

Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left.

COOK’S DAIRY FARM TOUR

He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to re-veal his stained T-shirt underneath.

With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, "What the world're ya doing, Billy Bob ?"

"Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebers out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob .. "But me 'n the wife been havin trouble lately in the bedroom d'partment, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor."

(Don't make me come splain this to you! Read the last line again, slowly.)
