The April 3 report from the United States
Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) statesthat the water level of Lake Superior is 3inches below its level of one year ago, whileLake Michigan-Huron is 15 inches lower.Lake Erie has levels 17 inches lower than ayear ago. Over the next month the waterlevel of Lake Erie is expected to increase 4inches.
Keith Kompoltowicz, Chief of WatershedHydrology for the Corps of Engineers dis-trict ofce in Detroit, said that the seasonalrise of Lake Erie is predicted as 9-11 inchesbelow the long term average, and two incheslower than in 2012.
The report states that Lake Erie has an av-erage seasonal rise of about 15 inches, butin 2012 had no seasonal rise and rather hashad steady or declining levels since January2012. This was the rst time in its recordedhistory that Lake Erie did not have a sea-sonal rise.
There is some good news for lake levelsthis year. One reason it is predicted that LakeErie levels will have an average or above av-erage seasonal rise is that there is still a goodamount of snow across the land areas adja-cent to the upper Great Lakes, much higherthat the levels of 2012. Also, the ofcial out-look issued by the National Weather Serviceshows the potential for above average pre-cipitation in April, May and June.
As for predicting future lake levels beyondthe six month forecast, Kompoltowicz stat-ed that, Based on historical scenarios, thereare any number of possibilities. Several sea-sons of heavier snow and rain would be re-quired to get the lakes back to average.
Across the Great Lakes the combinationof low lake levels and decreases in federalfunding for dredging has affected commer-cial shipping, including the closing of sev-eral Great Lakes ports. 36 of 60 deep draftports have been impacted by the low waters, and 46 of 80 shallow draft ports. There iscurrently funding for dredging at only 15-23 of those ports.
LaFarge Marblehead Quarry, one of thelargest and highest volume quarries in Ohio
and on the Great Lakes, ships about 95% ofits material to customers via lake freightersfrom its deep draft dock. Throughout GreatLakes ports, freighters are carrying an aver-age of 15% less cargo due to low water levelsand dredging issues. Though LaFarge re-ports no major issues, when the water levelis low, they load less stone.
Coast Guard Station Marblehead patrolsfrom the Toussaint on the west to Vermilionon the east, north to the Canadian border, and also Sandusky Bay and the Portage, San-dusky and Huron Rivers. Chief Petty OfcerFirst Class Phillip Null said that low waterlevels do not affect their ability to patrol andrescue. We have the appropriate resourcesfor any needs, said Null. We had to assistwith a few more boaters that ran agroundwith last years low water. Null said, howev-er, that most of those incidents are handledby commercial boat rescue operators.
Nulls advice to boaters, especially to thosethat have not been on Lake Erie in a whileand may be unaccustomed to the lower wa-ter levels: Beware of weather, currents andlow waters. Check www.noaa.gov for infor-mation. That is what we use.
Chief Petty Ofcer Second Class JamesHassinger reminds boaters to dress warmly, especially this time of year, to always weara life vest and to carry a cell phone. He alsoencourages boaters to take the safe boat-ing class offered on Saturday by the CoastGuard Auxiliary at the Station.
The most commonly recognized effect oflow water in this area is at the many privatemarinas, where water levels determine thesize of the boats that can be docked andlaunched.
Commodore John Schaffner of the PortClinton Yacht Club that sits at the mouth ofthe Portage River said that soundings weretaken and it was determined that no dredg-ing would be needed this year. Still, sailboatswith deeper keels may be affected by lowwater levels.
For more information on water levels,www.lre.usace.army.mil. For informa-tion on weather from Coast Guard StationMarblehead, www.noaa.gov. To track lake

Ohio United Way celebrated the organizations 100thanniversary at their Annual Meeting, Wednesday, April 10,at the Capital Club in Columbus.
Ohio United Way used the Annual Legislative Lun-cheon to celebrate 100 Years - 100 Heroes, recognition ofthe many individuals from across the state who have im-proved lives in their communities through service to theirlocal United Way and/or the state organization. Honoreeswere nominated by local United Ways and Ohio UnitedWay.
Ohio United Ways Board Chair, Attorney Clair Dick-inson, states: Ohio United Way is thrilled to be usingthe occasion of its anniversary to honor people who havemade its work possible: individuals from across Ohiowho have given selessly to make a positive difference intheir communities.
In 2003 three local developers, Bob Snyder, Bill Van DerGiessen and Pete Weimer, conceived the idea of a Car-
ing Giving Community. These three gentlemen thoughtthis was a way for developments to give back to the larg-er community as part of a commitment made by all ofits residents. The program is designed to be a templatefor developers and homeowner associations in OttawaCounty, and could be expanded throughout the state andperhaps throughout the country. In fact the original Car-ing Giving Community, Catawba Bay Development, hasinspired imitators in Ottawa County and there are nowthree Caring Giving Communities.
Giving back to our community through an institutionlike United Way makes us stronger, caring and creates abetter place for all of us to live in so many ways, says VanDer Giessen, Catawba Bay project developer.
Supporting United Way through a program of totalcommunity support is an ideal way to help build strength

The Danbury Township Board of Trustees was recentlythe recipient of some very special items purchased by theMarblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Fourteenrecycled-material benches were provided to the trusteesfor use in parks throughout the township. In addition tothe benches the Chamber also purchased a new sign forthe dog park which was created and manufactured byAllure Advertising in Danbury.
Keith Addy, Director Emeritus of the MarbleheadChamber, said, The opportunity for the Chamber togive back to the community in a visual, useful way wasthe thought behind this donation. With the approvalof the Board of Directors to purchase the benches andthe sign, the rest was easy for this retired member of theChamber. It is a small way for the community and visi-
tors to recognize that there is an active Chamber ofCommerce on the Peninsula.
Trustee Dianne Rozak added, These new benchesshould encourage our many visitors to stay a bitlonger at each of our parks to admire the views andutilize our other amenities. Of course we hope theywill also patronize our local businesses. Our board isa proud member of the Marblehead Chamber andwe are extremely grateful for this very generous do-nation. The sign for the dog park is a welcome addi-tion to our newest township project. I commend ourmaintenance staff for their diligent work in keepingour parks in excellent condition for residents andvisitors to enjoy.

The Oak Harbor FFA Chapter was pre-sented an opportunity by the Ohio Coun-try Journal and Ohio Ag. Net to enter acontest to create a music video/parody topromote agriculture and the FFA organi-zation. The Communications and Lead-ership class decided to take on this task. After a lot of brainstorming, they ended
up picking the songThrift Shop by Mackl-emore. Then they startedbrainstorming lyrics forthis song about agricul-ture and the FFA. Overa few weeks members
spent countless hourslming video footage forthe song. Once the lm-ing was over, studentsuploaded the video andbegan editing and puttingthe video to the music.
Once the video was nished it was up-loaded to youtube. The video nished 3rdin the Ohio Country Journal Contest.

On May 3-5 country musics Kelsey K.and the Buffalo Ridge Band will be at theOttawa County fairgrounds in Oak Har-bor to headline the Arena Fundraiser.
The arena at the Ottawa County Fair-grounds has a heavy clay mixture. Thefooting for horses and riders has been de-pendent on the weather conditions. On ahot day, the footing becomes loose and the
dust kicked up causes decreased visibilityand the horses, riders and spectators in-hale the dust. When the arena is watered, the relief is temporary because the bottomlayers of the arena are not properly irri-gated. When it rains, which seems to oftenhappen during Fair Week, the water poolsand the footing becomes slick and dan-gerous. A properly irrigated and preparedarena can help solve all these problems.
The three-day event to help raise fund torenovate the arena features a chili cook-off, and several exhibitions and competi-tions including an Open Speed Exhibition,a Contesting competition and a PleasureShow.
Kelsey K. has already, at 13, written over200 songs and released two original CDs.She is the youngest songwriter ever select-ed to attend NSAIs Advanced Song Camp. Her song I Am Somebody was chosenfor MTVs documentary Bullied. Herlatest CD, Blue Jean Girl, produced byJimmy Nichols, musical director for FaithHill, was released in October of 2012.
For more information on the fundraiserand the project, check the website at www.ottawaarenafund.com, Twitter @Arena-Fund or Facebook at facebook.com/Ot-tawaArenaFund.

Autism is a disorder that holds much mystery and few de-nitive answers. It is a spectrum disorder that deeply im-pacts families and their children on many different levels.
An emotional reunion was held in the home of the Prattfamily to talk about what autism means for them. Cheryland Scott are typical parents of four growing sons. Theirsecond son Lance was given an early diagnosis of autism 13
years ago at the age of 2. Cheryl recalls those early years ten-derly, with his Early Intervention Specialist Susie Maloney.Cheryl states I dont know what I would have done without
you! When asked to recall what the biggest help in thoseearly days of diagnosis and therapies was, Cheryl teared upand said, I will never forget the day you showed me thatLance was capable of giving me eye contact. You gave mehope! I needed to see that he could be like other children.
Following the diagnosis, Cheryl and Scott opened theirhome to therapies 3x a week. Children with autism do notprocess the world the way typical children do. Lance wouldperseverate when he became anxious, had a high tolerance
for pain and did not understand physical and social bound-aries. Cheryl states that his high tolerance for pain is stillquite a concern. His mom shares that he can eat a bowl ofsteaming hot noodles and it will not faze him.
Lances three brothers are in his court. They are quick tovoice that they love their brother. They hate autism, saidCheryl.
Lance has had a special fondness for horses since child-hood. His parents have provided him with many opportu-nities to pursue his interest and he has since become an ac-
complished rider. He is now affectionately called the horsewhisperer.
Lance is well known and accepted by his high school peergroup. Socially, Lance has come a long way from the littleboy whose parents initially thought that he was deaf and wasnot interested in social engagement in any form.
Lance accompanied his mother to a recent Support Groupmeeting following their return to the area. He surprisedeveryone by greeting Susie and Sandy (his support special-ist) with a hug and calling each by name. His mother wasshocked that he knew names, after all these years. He wasonly told that he was attending a meeting, said Cheryl. That is a testimony of Lances potential for early imprinting, memory skills and his ability to bond. Lance has touched thelives of many people. He is truly an inspiration.

Manager: Traci Bodi, 10th seasonLast Season: 12-11 (7-7 SBC)Batting Order: CF Kalib Shiets; C Blake
Calvert; SS Addison Rospert; RF Trey Glu-th; 2B Chris Stokes; 1B Cory Colston; 3B
Sean Black; LF Kyle Radloff; P Zak FloroOutlook: Thus far, the Port Clintonbaseball team has struggled.
After coming into the season with highexpectations, the Redskins have struggledto a 1-6 start, something they hope ismore an aberration than anything else.
Manager Traci Bodi, now in his 10th sea-son with the club, spoke about the season.
Weve played a challenging schedule,he said of a run thats featured the likesof Fremont Ross, Bellevue and Sandusky. Were just not making plays that we needto make to get out of big innings. Thatsone of the things that were going to tryand focus on. We had some injuries earlyon with our pitching staff, (but) weve still
got to make plays. Its a little bit of everything, an errorthere or a routine play thats not beingmade. Everything that can (go wrong) is.Weve got to nd a way to stop.
The team, which has nine seniors, fea-tures a batting order of the following: CF
Kalib Shiets; C Blake Calvert; SS AddisonRospert; RF Trey Gluth; 2B Chris Stokes;1B Cory Colston; 3B Sean Black; LF KyleRadloff; P Zak Floro.
The best hitter of the group is Rospert, athree-year letter winner who has commit-
ted to play baseball at Bowling Green StateUniversity next season. Colston, Gluth,Stokes, Black and Calvert have also seensteady varsity action since their sopho-more seasons.
The pitching staff features Rospert,Gluth, Floro, Sean Black and Jason Bailey. Those ve will go a long way in determin-ing how the Skins do this season.
Our goal is to compete for the SBCtitle, Bodi said. Its been a little bit of arough start, (but) well continue to getbetter everyday. We push for one game ata time in the SBC its going to challeng-ing.
Bodi sees the league as being quite com-petitive with Perkins being the favorite,
though he sees Oak Harbor and Clyde, among others, as being pretty good.Everyones strong thru the league,
he said. Its as strong as Ive seen it in awhile. Theres not going to be an easy roadin the league. Weve got to step it up.
Redskins hoping for bigthings this season

Head Coach: Rob Schimmoeller, ninth yearLast Year: 18-8 (12-2 SBC)Batting Order: SS Mark Konieczy; 2B Andy Rathbun; P
A.J. Cecil; LF Logan Winke; 1B Nate Segaard; CF JustinWarnke; 3B Ben Genzman; RF Jourdan Maguire; C MikeOsbourne
Outlook: The last two years have been pretty special forOak Harbor.
Last season, the Rockets won their rst Sandusky BayConference title in 20 years and the year before that theywent on an incredible run that saw win ve tournamentgames to advance to the Division II Regional Final.
Most of the key players from last years squad are gone, meaning Oak Harbor has lost the vast majority of its pro-duction. It should be noted that senior Kaleb Maguire, who wouldve played a key role on this years team, willmiss the season because of a torn Achilles tendon injury.
Fortunately, Oak Harbor has two of the areas best play-ers, Mark Konieczny and A.J. Cecil, back for one nal run.Konieczny, who plays shortstop and pitches occasionally,
hit .489 with a remarkable .718 on-base percentage whileserving as the catalyst for the offense last season. Cecil, who plays center eld when hes not pitching, hit .435(.590 OBP) and went 6-3 on the mound with a 1.41 ERA.Senior Nate Segaard is expected to help as well, having hit.455 in the rst four games to go with ve stolen bases.
Fortunately, A.J. and Mark are back to set the table, manager Rob Schimmoeller said, so the middle of ourlineup should have plenty of RBI opportunities. Howev-er, with only two returning starters, we may have to playsmall ball with the bottom part of our order.
Thus far, the Rockets have raced out to a 7-1 start behinda combination of good pitching and hitting. Cecil (3-0,0.45 ERA), Segaard (2-0, 0.78 ERA) and Konieczny (0-1,0.81 ERA) have all pitched very well this season.
Those three are also also part of the ve players who arecurrently hitting at least .400 thru the rst eight games.Cecil (.625 BA, 3 2B), Andy Rathbun (.500 BA, 2 2B), Lo-gan Winke (.452 BA, 4 2B), Konieczny (.433 BA, 4 2B) andSegaard (.400 BA, 9 RBI) have all been instrumental inleading Oak Harbor to their ne start.

Manager: Chris Rawski, 2nd seasonLast Season: 8-18 (6-8 SBC)Batting Order: RF Allison Wolf; P Sam Durivage; 3B Jus-
tin Webb; 1B Theresa Stokes; SS Rebecca Florio; DH KimWahlers; C Maggie Tyburski; CF Sydney Street; LF BrandiLochotzki
Outlook: After going 8-18 last season, a year that sawthem start 1-10, the Oak Harbor softball team has startedoff the 2013 campaign with a 7-0 record.
The combination of good pitching from Sam Durivage, timely hitting and good defense has helped propel theRockets to their great start, one that has come exclusivelyagainst non-conference opponents.
Thus far, the Rockets have won every game by at leastseven runs and, in the few instances in which theyve dealt
with adversity, theyve come through.Having lost just two players from last season, Oak Har-
bor, under second-year head coach Chris Rawski, feature afront-line starter in Durivage, a number of quality hittersin Allison Wolf, Justine Webb and Theresa Stokes and adefensively-sound ineld.
The lineup is, as follows: RF Wolf; P Sam Durivage; 3BWebb; 1B Stokes; SS Rebecca Florio; DH Kim Wahlers; CMaggie Tyburski; CF Sydney Street; LF Brandi Lochotzki.
Sams done a nice job (thus far), Rawski said. Shes
been attacking the hitters and letting her defense work be-hind her. Sam is leading us in the circle and is a big partof our offense.
As a team, we will focus on putting the ball in play withtwo strikes and making the routine play on defense. Webb,Stokes, Florio, Street, Tyburski and Wolf will also be a big
part of our offense. Its an experienced squad, one that has six players (Erin
Bryant, Durivage, Florio, Tyburski, Street, Stokes) playingtheir third season at the varsity level, giving the team rea-son to be optimistic this year.
The preseason rankings had Edison and Perkins at thetop with Oak Harbor picked sixth. Rawski is hoping thatthe Rockets will make a run at the league title, or at leastnish near the top of the conference, and wants them tomake noise in the tournament.
For their efforts last year, Wolf, Webb, Durivage and Flo-rio were named honorable mention in the Sandusky BayConference.
In just a short period of time with the program, Rawskihas already helped to instill a culture of winning with theplayers.
Rockets look to continue upward mobility
