WELCOMEThis issue welcomes in theSummer of 2016 here at thePointe. After a very cool latespring this year, that followed avery mild winter, it is especiallywelcomed. This year is probably the mostsignificant for Canal Pointe so farfor several reasons. It’s the firstfull year we residents haveownership of both Boards. TheDeveloper turned over control ofthe Condo/TH Board to itsproperty owners last year. InJanuary, he turned over controlof the SFH Board to the SFHresidents. The condo buildingsare built and sold out. The lasttownhouse building has beenbuilt and only several unitsremain to be sold. There are lessthan 40 single family homes tobe built.Kudos to our neighbors whohave voluntarily accepted thoseBoard positions and are workingvery hard on our behalf. I canonly imagine how hard it is totake over from what anothermanagement company hasdone, or not done over theyears, and in many cases, starting from the ground up.Not only is your job not easy, itis often a thankless one. We doencourage patience from ourneighbors as you take us intothis next phase ofour development asan awesome com-munity. Our hats offto you.

We are Canal Pointe – Condos,Single Family Homeowners,

Townhomes – We are ONEvibrant neighborhood. We arebusiness owners, retirees, bicyclists, aviators, photog-raphers, artists, nurses, doctors, multicultural, dog owners, kids, poets, marrieds, singles, writers, swimmers, etc. with probably afew politicians thrown in themix. It’s who we are and it’swhat we at The Pointe are allabout. Best of all, we try veryhard to be the neighbors weourselves would like to have. In this issue, you will meet MarkPallister, a local artist and DJ whojust moved to The Pointe. I methim at the May wine party at theLarson’s and when I learned hewas an artist, I asked him if hewould send us something for thisissue’s cover. Not only did he dothat, but he allowed me to visitto videotape him talking abouthis art. Mark is also one of theaqua aerobics exercisers at theback pool and he even bringsalong music to get those bodiesmoving even more. To me, heexemplifies the Grande Spiritthat permeates Canal Pointe. Kim Truesdale is another of ourwonderful neighbors. She volun-tarily teaches water aerobics 3times per week at the back pool.Kudos to you both!Kudos to all the contributors tothis newsletter, especially firsttimers.

This Issue’s Cover Artist

Artist Mark J. Pallister, was born and raised in Scotland, lived in Fife, Edinburgh and London for much of his life before moving to the US in 1999.Art was a passion since childhood and Mark excelled at it at school, but never pursued it as a career until now, having instead served as a club DJ from the age of 17, retail manager, and 10 years in the London Metropolitan Police.Mark’s favorite mediums include acrylic paint on canvas, often heavily textured, pencil and pastel drawing, sculpting and lastly creating neoclassical

buildings and landscapes in virtual world environments.Through Mark’s life he has been inspired by the art of Picasso, Van Gogh and many others who 'pushed the envelope’, and by some of the amazing architecture he was lucky enough to live in the midst of during his time in Europe. Mark has painted landscapes, portraits and abstracts over the years. With his move to Canal Pointe Mark now has a dedicated art studio to pursue his talent.‘The Spark’ [cover photo] heavily textured acrylic paint on canvas.

Paradise FoundBy: Christina Schott <> Exeter Drive

I’ve always loved the water. After over 20 years of owning various boats, my husband of 33 years (Jeff)and I were looking for an alternative. We both agreed that we wanted a place that feels like home, and it needed to be near the water.

About two years ago, we traveled to Rehoboth Beach and found our Paradise in a beach resort with a hometown feel. It is very clean and full of nice people, with great restaurants, and plenty to do. Our search for a second home started. After constantly browsing Zillow.com, Realtor.com, homebuilders’ sites, and several trips, we found it: Grande at Canal Pointe. We purchased our condo the very first day we visited.

As an artist, I have been inspired in so many ways by our new found paradise. Our new condo, first home, and my studio are filled with artwork inspired by Rehoboth Beach and the memories that we have already made here. You can check out my work by visiting http://CSchott.com

I live in Canal Pointe on ManchesterDrive with my wife Cynthia. I workfor Keystone Aerial Surveys and I hadone of our crews fly over ourneighborhood recently. Our highresolution multispectral cameras areable to produce color B&W and colorIR all at the same time. The singleimage covers North of Canal Pointeto the top of Rehoboth Bay showingour relationship to the surroundingarea and Rehoboth Beach.

I was excited to share the infrared imagery with Kent Larson and he suggested that I post that imageon Nextdoor along with a brief explanation of how IR imagery is used. I would also like to let peopleknow that color enlargements are available for $40.00 (cropping included) if someone wanted one.My intent was never to try to sell imagery and I just thought if someone out there is an aerial geek likeKent and I, they might appreciate the opportunity.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY OF CANAL POINTE

Page 6: The best kept secret in Rehoboth!

On a rare clear day in May…

You never know what is flying above you on any given day. Not all aircraft are carrying passengers cross-country

or toting banners advertising for Coppertone suntan lotion or Geico Insurance. Some aircraft, the big brother of

drones, have holes in their fuselage where high resolution, multispectral cameras peer out to acquire aerial survey

imagery.

On such a clear day I asked to have imagery flown over The Grand at Canal Pointe, my new home in Delaware

where my wife Cynthia and I plan to retire in a few years. This flight was not for an engineering or scientific mission

but was merely to satisfy my desire to have an up to date, high quality aerial image of our neighborhood and show

its proximity to Rehoboth Beach and surrounding areas.

Given the high tech nature of the camera used for this flight, the term overkill may be an understatement. The

benefit of using one of our multispectral cameras allows for digital processing to color, black & white and color

infrared images from a single pass over the target area. For fun I had the color infrared data processed to imagery

as well.

Color infrared (CIR) is primary use for vegetation studies. An added benefit of CIR is it does not see haze in the

atmosphere because haze is transmitted in the blue wavelengths of light. Trained specialists can determine the

various species and health of vegetation based on the colors captured in the infrared spectrum. Color intensity

can measure the amount of rainfall received in a region all while avoiding the adverse effects of haze.

Below, in order to control the file size, you will see reduced resolution color and color infrared imagery provided

by Keystone Aerial Surveys Inc. acquired on May 20th 2016. Also I have included a few interesting links on the uses

of color infrared photography. Note how the rainfall makes the reds pop on the CIR image.

My wife and I plan to have an enlargement made and framed so we can proudly display the color image in our

home. I know that I am an aerial photography geek and while I never intended to sell this imagery, if anyone else

is a kindred spirit and wanted one for their home, I have been authorized to offer these for $40.00 as custom

enlargements and cropped to your specifications. Otherwise you are all welcome to see ours anytime.

I look forward to see you around the neighborhood,

Tom Wise

As with any lab, she loves to fetch, swim and walk.Naturally, the beach became her favorite place.

Maddie actually whimpers when she gets near enough tosmell the ocean!

Most days you can look outside your window and seeDavid, Maddie and me walking past. Happy tails!

SUMMER TIPS

REHOBOTH - PARKING IS FREE IN DOWNTOWN REHOBOTH!!

Yes it’s true. Parking is free all summer until 10A.M. every day all summer in downtownRehoboth. That INCLUDES parking meters. It’salso free after 5 P.M. in areas that do not havemeters.

ANOTHER PARKING TIP- Parking is free inareas around the churches during times of churchservices. Here is a clip from St Edmond’sexplaining that.

DEWEY - Parking tips in Dewey Beach

I am enjoying the summer months as a Code Enforcement Officer in Dewey Beach. (Yes, this makes mea CEO!) No one likes coming back from dinner or the beach to find a ticket under their windshield wipers. Here are a few tips for your visit to Dewey Beach.1. All streets in Dewey are either metered or parking permit required.2. There are two exceptions to #1. There is free parking in Dewey every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from5-11 pm. Also, a handicapped plate or placard gives you free parking at all times.3. Meters take quarters, credit card (most) or Parkmobile.4. You can get parking permits for daily, weekly or weekend use.5. Make sure you always park with the flow of traffic.6. Pay attention to certain streets where it specifies parallel, perpendicular or head in parking only.7. On some streets, it may seem like you are parking in someone's yard, but DB owners only have control of their driveways. You may park between driveways, even on grass.8. Make sure your tires are not on the street.

Now you can go to Dewey Beach and enjoy yourself!David Garrett <> Bridgewater Drive

SUMMER PARKING IN CANAL POINTE

As tempers flare over parking in Downtown Rehoboth, we in Canal Pointe have never had any parking issues, right? Well, we may not have meters and permits, but here are a few NEIGHBORLY TIPS to help ensure parking does not get in the way of good old fashioned neighborhood friendliness.

1. Parking on both sides of any street prohibits emergency vehicles from getting through. Please use your garages, driveways first. Make sure if your guests are using the street that only one side of the street is used.

2. Parking in front of Fire hydrants is prohibited by law. Parking in front of mailboxes causes mail not tobe delivered. Please be careful of where you park.3. Please do not block neighbor's driveways.Have a safe and fun Summer here at Canal Pointe!

Volunteer CornerSandy Cobb <> Chelmer Drive

Welcome to a new section of the Canal Pointe Newsletter! This section will be used to highlight both potential volunteer activities for those who are looking to share their time and passions, and as a place to celebrate those who are already making a difference in our communities.

As a former professional in the field of aging, I will start us off with a volunteer effort I recently discovered. The Easter Seals organization is

looking for individuals who are willing to assist lower- income seniors with their monthly budgeting and bill paying. These are seniors who for a variety of reasons are unable to perform this task by themselves. The time commitment is minimal, only 1-2 hours per month, and Easter Seals provides all training, background screening, and matching.

If you are interested in learning more about the program, which is called “Money Management,” please call Sharnell Darby at 302-221- 2008 or email her at [email protected].

If you know of any volunteers serving the lower Delaware community, please email me at [email protected] so that I can promote both the volunteer and the organization in a future issue.

Commencing homeowner control from a developer and changing property management companies isan enormous and very time consuming job. It requires setting up many policies, procedures, contracts, and organizational structures for the first time, as well as the hard work and efforts of many people.Hopefully you've been receiving our regular email updates to keep you abreast of our many actions todate on your behalf, especially to get ready for the summer season. One of the key players is our newproperty manager. We began our new relationship with Solutions Property Management effectiveMay 1. 3. Your HOA Board began holding bi-weekly meetings in the Clubhouse lobby on Tuesday, June 21 at 4pm. These meetings are open to residents, though seating is limited due to the size of our Clubhouse.Additional meeting dates throughout the summer will be held on the following dates in the samelocation. 6. Waste Management, our trash and recycle contractor, notified us on June 17th, that we can expectlater Monday afternoon trash and recycle pickups for at least the next 4 weeks. Our Nextdoor membership now totals 469 Canal Pointe connected neighbors. While not geographically the largest Nextdoor neighborhood in the area, we are the largest in terms of members. The next closest in number is Downtown Rehoboth with 409 members. We did have one member remove himself recently because of too much chatter apparently. If he had known there is anoption to regulate how one receives messages from Nextdoor, it might have been a problem he could have easily remedied himself. In the wake of the terrorism perpetrated against the LGBT community and our country at a nightclubin Orlando, Florida on June 12th, I asked Canal Pointe neighbors via Nextdoor if anyone had thoughtsthey would be willing to share in The Pointe about the event. Irish Richman came forth and shared alink to an article entitled “To my heterosexual friends: this is why Orlando hurts”. I found the shortessay well worth reading. It’s available online in its entirety at http://johnpeart.org/2016/06/14/to-my-heterosexual-friends-orlando-shootings The essay concludes with the following advice: “So my friends, don’t stay silent in the face ofhomophobic terror. Do something. Be defiant. Light a candle. Teach your children LGBT people are tobe loved not feared. Lend your support to homophiles not homophobes. Ask your LGBT friends ifthey’re OK. Do whatever you can, but don’t stay silent and don’t let this happen again.”

Until now, I have not known what to sayto my LGBT friends. [Similarly, last yearwith the Charleston church shootings, Ididn’t know what to say to my blackfriends either.] For the most part, Ihaven’t brought up the Orlando shootingwith my LGBT friends for that reason. Isuspect many of my friends and neighborsfeel the same. Now I understand thatsometimes just a simple “ How are youdoing? Are you OK? “ would be a goodstart. Silence does not help anyone. -Jack Casto

News from Tara

Hello NVHome homeowners! My name is Tara and I am the NVHomes Sales Representative for your community. As you know I am taking over for Meredith Pierce and I truly have big shoes to fill. I’ve met quite a few of you and look forward to meeting more of you. Stop by the model anytime to say “Hi”.

Did you know we only have 39 homesites left? If you know someone who is considering making an NVHome at The Grande at Canal Pointe home, please let them know that now is the time to visit me at the model. We sold 5 homes in five weeks last month.

We are still looking for a few homeowners that would like to volunteer for our Canal Pointe Ambassador Program!

My goal is to have a few homeowners “on-call” who could meet a potential homeowner here at the model (or at your home) and possibly escort them around the community or into town to show them all the great features you as a homeowner have come to love about Canal Pointe.

As I have been taking prospects around the community so many of you have been acting in this capacity; offering information, showing your homes. Big thank you to those of you have graciously welcomed potential new homeowners with open arms! It’s what makes The Grande at Canal Pointe such a fabulous place to call home.

Please feel free to e-mail Tara Wilson; [email protected], for more information and to sign-up. This would be a volunteer program and would help to get more neighbors and complete the community!

Some Thoughts on UberUber is an alternative to regular taxi service. I recently asked about local Uber experiences via our

Nextdoor neighborhood and here are some of the comments.

My adult sons & their friends always UBER at night. When you consider the parking challenges, and the

definite risk of walking into town and back, after dark, UBER is the way to go. The response time is much

quicker than the taxis. - Carol Y

It's great! We've used it several times from CP to the boardwalk. Cost is around $9-$10 no matter how many peeps.

Request cheapest car for cheapest fare. Uber XL will cost more but if you have 6 peeps than it may be worth it.

Also, Uber will give you a fare estimate if you look for it on the app. Safe travels! - Beth L

All the options you describe are possible with Uber, which began serving the DE Shore region just about a year

ago. You'd begin with your location, e.g, your CP residence. You'd then select your destination, what size vehicle

you desire and how many passengers on your trip. In some locations, e.g, DC, you could also choose the "pool"

option, which would include other passengers picked up at different locations along the route. You'd then get an

estimate of the cost of the trip...shortly followed by an estimated time you can expect the Uber driver to arrive.

You set up all necessary features, e.g., your contact info, CC, etc. before using Uber, so you don't have to worry

about that stuff on a trip-by-trip basis. - Mike S

Jack, you can usually have 4 passengers in the lowest car/cheapest option "UberX". You may want to mention

"surge pricing" in the article as well... It's a key concept to look out for when using Uber. They increase their fare

price by some multiple during high demand - or low supply - times. For example, I made the mistake of using Uber

from CP to downtown for the first time Sat night Memorial Day weekend. We normally bike, scooter, or drive

ourselves, but with a couple of guests, we tried Uber. Going in was great. Around $9-$10 bucks I think like Beth

mentioned, but the problem was coming back. They had 5x surge pricing so estimate was upwards of $50+ dollars

(had never seen anything like that in DC!). Actual price charged was $30+ something I believe.

On topic of competition/alternatives... Might be good to talk about Taxi options if possible. I've never used a taxi

before - always heard bad things about using a taxi. That same night when we saw the Uber surge pricing we tried

to call Beach Taxi. They said they'd arrive in 20mins - but after waiting at least 40min and no sign of them (and no

call back ever) - we took Uber finally... - Rick S

Good point about throwing taxis into the mix. There are even apps that allow you to do comparison shopping

among Uber, Lyft, and Taxis, e.g., "Fare Estimate Uber Lyft & Taxi." UR right, there are times that taxis are the

cheapest! - Mike S

I am driving for Uber just for "fun!" Who knows I might pick you up. Spread the word to your neighbors about how

great the experience is! I need to be busier! - Kim Truesdale

According to Ubers that we have used in Chicago & other areas, the Uber will take you & passengers to the desig-

nated destination. No tips allowed. They will bring vans if you have A large amount of passengers. U need to down-

load the Uber app onto your phone. It is a professional, well-run service. It is much cheaper than taxis. - Lori K

Very recently, Kathy and I went on a trip toRome. It was part of a tour sponsored byour Church, St. Edmonds in Rehoboth. We saw many marvelous things while inItaly.

We visited Assisi, a walled city inNorthern Italy that had been home to St.Francis, who loved animals so much. Wewent through several wine districts, but thetour did not stop long enough to taste anyof the wine! We saw beautiful art work inFlorence. We visited the ancient ruins ofPompeii, walking the very streets of theold city and seeing the outline of peoplekilled and covered by the ash from the

explosion of Mt. Vesuvius and we even visited the “red light” district of the town. We also stayed at aMonastery which had been cut into the side of a Mountain. We visited the famous World War II battlesites of Monte Cassino and Salerno. Our tour finished up with three days in Rome, where we visitedthe Coliseum, walked through the incredibly beautiful Sistine Chapel, saw Pope Francis up close andtoured St. Peters in Rome, which is the largest church in the world.

It was an incredible 10 days of sights, sounds and people that Kathy and I will never forget!!
