Foodbank demandcontinues to growBenefits changes rollout blamed for latest increase

STRATFORD Foodbank has launched its latestappeal for donations after revealing a large increasein people turning to it for help.

There has been a 27 per cent increase compared with thistime last year, with the organisation currently providing morethan 160 food parcels a month.

are given to children.The rise has been blamed on the rollout of Universal

Credit, which replaces six benefits for people who arelooking for work or on a low income, but is paidmonthly rather than weekly or fortnightly as some ofthe benefits it replaces were.

Marion Homer, Stratford Foodbank manager, said:“Unfortunately, we have seen a significant increase inuse this year and some months we give away more foodthan we receive. We suspect that the increase we haveseen may be connected with the rollout of UniversalCredit in our area.

“Given the double impact of an expected seasonalincrease combined with the current year-on-year rise,we are once again appealing for help.

“We are fortunate that the community alwaysresponds to our appeals and our service remains viable.

“The people of Stratford have been overwhelminglygenerous to the foodbank. Every tin donated and everyminute spent volunteering really does make a differ-ence to those facing crisis.

“The foodbank doesn’t just provide emergency foodparcels. Our signposting support means we can helpstabilise the situation faced by our clients, providingsome breathing space and guidance about what to donext.”

The public can make donations through collectionbaskets in Morrisons, Waitrose, Tesco and Holy TrinityChurch.

Among the items currently needed are tinnedspaghetti, tinned meat, tinned pies, tinned meat meals,tinned fish, tinned vegetarian meals, tinned veg, instantmash, rice, custard, rice pudding, steam puddings,tinned fruit, UHT juice, powdered milk, savourysnacks, energy bars, chocolate, coffee, sugar, men’s toi-letries and deodorant.

WARWICK District Council’s development plan hasbeen approved by a planning inspector after almosttwo years of delays and heavy criticism from theCampaign for the Protection of Rural England(CPRE) and villages being eyed by developers.

The document centres around 13,000 new homesbetween 2017 and 2029, new schools, significantimprovements to roads, cycleways and public trans-port, and also sets aside land for thousands of newjobs.

It is now expected to be formally adopted by thecouncil at a meeting on Wednesday, 20th September.

The plan was examined by a government inspectorat public hearings in 2015 and 2016.

A public consultation was held earlier this year fol-lowing modifications that centred around a significantincrease in the number of houses that will be built upuntil 2029 and new sites that have been identified,including in Barford, Hampton Magna, and theformer Warwickshire Police headquarters in LeekWootton, where 115 homes have been earmarked.

The document also includes The Asps and GallowsHill sites near Warwick, where around 1,500 homes,a park and ride, primary school, neighbourhoodpolice office, convenience store, and communityfacilities will eventually be built.

Cllr Andrew Mobbs, leader of Warwick DistrictCouncil, said: “This is a landmark moment for ourdistrict. Once the Local Plan is adopted we will havethe strong framework we need to secure our futureprosperity and protect our built and rural environ-ment. I’m aware that the Local Plan hasn’t beenwithout controversy, but I genuinely believe that wecan now look forward with confidence and optimism,particularly for the green belt that will cover over 77per cent of our district.”

CHANGES� to the way War-wickshire Police respond toincidents involving childrenhave helped see� a significantreduction in arrests over theyears.

Figures about child arrests havebeen released as part of a report byThe Howard League for PenalReform.

Research by the charity has foundthat the force made 597 arrests ofchildren aged 17 and under last year,the fourth lowest in the country,down from 1,419 in 2010.

Across England and Wales, thetotal number of arrests of childrenhas fallen by 64 per cent in sixyears — from almost 250,000 in

2010 to 87,525 in 2016.Assistant Chief Constable, Martin

Evans, said: “These latest figurescontinue to reflect the positive stepsbeing taken, not just within War-wickshire but nationally, to ensurethe best possible outcome for youngpeople who come to the attention ofthe police.

“When allegations involve ayoung person we must strike acareful balance between arriving atthe right outcome for the victimwhilst ensuring that the child has anopportunity to show remorse, learn

from his or her mistakes and, withthe appropriate support, move for-ward in a constructive way.”

He added: “Within WarwickshirePolice we actively encourage ourofficers to use their professionaljudgement, to not simply rely onarrests and to see past the obviouswhen responding to an incident orcrime involving a child or youngperson.

“This enables us to ensure that theresponse is appropriate and propor-tionate for each given situation.”

The highest number of childarrests last year was not surprisinglyby the Met (20,387), following byWest Midlands Police (5,244), withthe lowest by the City and LondonPolice (51). Nationally there were87,525.

STAFF from Heart of EnglandMencap and Warwick Hospital willbe competing in The Wolf Run nextmonth.

The popular event is being held atWelsh Road Farm near Leamington,and will see runners take on a 10kmcourse through woods, over obstacles,through lakes and fields — and a con-siderable amount of mud.

Petrol thief led policeon high-speed chaseA MAN who led the police on a high-speedchase after officers attempted to pull him over aspart of roadside checks in Stratford in May hasbeen jailed for 14 months.

Warwick Crown Court heard that petrol thief JordanBench had his girlfriend and their young son in the backof the car as he reached speeds of 120mph.

The chase ended in Coventry where the 22-year-oldlived. Bench pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, havingno licence or insurance, failing to stop for the police, andtheft, and also admitted failing to attend court for ahearing last month, and was jailed for 14 months andbanned from driving for two years and seven months.

Police said Bench’s car had a maker placed on it inconnection with a theft of petrol from a BP service stationin Warwick.

And just days later, the cars was flagged up on auto-matic numberplate recognition (ANPR) cameras thatofficers were using as part of the week-long OperationTrivium.

Walk fora friend LOCAL fishmongerHarry Dyke, aka Harrythe fish has walked sevenmiles to help fundresearch about ChronicKidney Disease.

Harry, who works atHillers Farm shop, Dun-nington walked with hisdad from the Lenches toEvesham Bridge on thesame day as thousandswalked the LondonBridge walk in aid of thecharity.

The 22-year-old’smotive for the fundraiserwas because his bestfriend has to have dialysisthree times a week. Heraised over £200, takinghis fundraising for thecharity to well over£1,000.

Harry, a member of thefamous celebrity cricketteam, The Bunburys, said“I am tremendously proudof the achievement andpleased that it is going tosuch a special cause asthe kidney researchcharity.”

STAFF nurse Carole Simmons recently worked her lastshift at The Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston after 43years’ service to the NHS. She started training in 1974at Stratford Hospital and converted to a registered gen-eral nurse at Warwick Hospital, working on DugdaleWard, before returning to Stratford as a staff nurse onAvon Ward.

In 1996 she moved to Leamington RehabilitationHospital as deputy ward manager on Arden Ward forfive years, the last year as acting ward manager.

After semi-retiring she carried on working one night aweek in Shipston as staff nurse until her last shift onFriday, 28th July.

Carole’s family say she loved her job and made lotsof good friends during her time as a nurse, but is nowlooking forward to her retirement and concentrating onher other passion, bowling at Welford Bowls Club.

Restaurant could get the go-ahead despite concernsPLANS for a new restaurant inWellesbourne are set to be approvedby planners at Stratford DistrictCouncil tomorrow, Wednesday,despite local opposition.

The application to convert theformer Bargain Booze shop onWarwick Road into a restaurant isrecommended for approval in docu-ments set to be presented to mem-

bers of council’s east area planningcommittee. It is not known whattype of food would be served, but ifapproved the restaurant would beable to serve up to 38 diners

between the hours of 5pm and11pm.

However, a number of objectionshave been submitted to the councilwith local residents highlighting thepotential noise, smells and parkingproblems they believe such a busi-ness could bring.

An assessment by environmentalhealth officers agreed that it would

have an impact on those livingclose by, but these concerns couldbe controlled with good manage-ment and planning control condi-tions.

The applicant has already madealterations to the proposal,removing the takeaway aspect ofthe restaurant, following an objec-tion from highways officers.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Highways England Company Limited (Company No. 9346363) intends to make an Order on the M40 Motorway and the M42 Motorway, in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull and the County of Warwickshire, to allow lighting conversion work to be carried out.

The effect of the Order will be to close, at different times –(1) the northbound carriageway of the M40 from its junction

with the link road leading to the northbound carriageway of the M42, to its junction with the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M42 at M42 Junction 3a;

(2) the southbound carriageway of the M40 from its junction with the link road leading to the northbound carriageway of the M42, to its junction with the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M42 at M42 Junction 3a;

(3) the link road leading from the northbound carriageway of the M40 to the northbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3a;

(4) the link road leading from the eastbound carriageway of the M42 to the northbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3a;

(5) the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3a to the southbound carriageway of the M40;

(6) the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the M42 to the westbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 3a;

(7) the slip roads leading to and from the northbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 4; and

(8) the slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the M42 at Junction 4.

The work will be carried out overnight between 21:00 hours and 06:00 hours and is expected to start on Monday 11 September 2017 and continue for eight nights. The Order will come into force on 4 September 2017.

Vehicles being used for police, fire brigade, ambulance or traffic officer purposes and vehicles being used in connection with the works, will be exempt from the closures.

Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M42 and M40 will be signed.

Town earn apoint despite‘flat’ showingSTRATFORD Town manager Carl Adamsbemoaned a “flat” performance in Saturday’sdraw with St Neots Town at the MoodChimpStadium.

Town maintained their unbeaten start to their Evo-StikLeague South Premier campaign, but the home side werefar from their best.

In a drab contest that did little to excite supporters,Town took an eighth-minute lead through skipper JamesFry, but Dion Sembie-Ferris’s superb solo goal 13 min-utes later earned the visitors a point.

A point was the least they deserved, too, as Saints dom-inated large periods of the game and Stratford were luckynot to be a couple of goals down at half-time.

“It was a poor game with not much quality from eitherside,” said Adams.

“On paper, this was probably the easiest of our openingthree fixtures, but it goes to show that there are no easygames at this level. And I’m happy that at least we’vemaintained our unbeaten record.

I would certainly have settled for five points from thesethree games before the season started although theyhaven’t come in quite the way we expected.

“So although the negative is that we were very flat, thepositive is we still took a point and didn’t lose, and wecan now prepare for two tough games against Weymouthand Redditch.”
