Candidate for Collier County Commissioner, District 1 (East Naples, Goodland, Marco Island, Isles of Capri, Port of the Islands, & all in between)
Collier County is fragile and vulnerable now more than ever. When you build anything and add excessive traffic and congestion, many other areas are also affected. Water, our environment, safety, enough first responder support, beaches, and the overall appearance of our community. Poorly planned com-munity developments and congested roads together can harm our environment and quality of life. What Rick brings to the position to ensure our water qual-ity, environmental issues, housing, developments, overcrowding prevention, controlled traffic, city planning, education, healthcare, security & safety, and protection of our vital green space are all priorities--is proven and deep Expe-rience & Qualifications in these critical areas… and more.
It takes more than just having lived here for a County Commissioner to fully understand the massive decisions of managing our $2 Billion County budget & ensuring we Protect, Preserve, & Improve our community.
Issues such as:• Housing• Environmental Protection• Water & Flooding Issues• Managed Growth• Proper Land Use• Roads & Grounds• Healthcare• Education• Safety & Security• Traffic & Congestion• Properly Overseeing Taxpayer Dollars
... and many other critical issues a Commissioner needs to have a grasp of. Rick has the Experience & Qualifications from a multitude of military & civilian senior leadership positions to be able to bring just that to the seat on DAY 1.
He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, served two Presidents (Bush 41 & 43), was a senior NATO Commander, military & civilian Healthcare Leader, and retired as a full Colonel. Rick arrived in Naples years ago when recruited to be the Chief Operating Officer of Physicians Regional Medical Center and was also a senior leader at Avow Hospice. He has managed billions of dollars of taxpayer dollars. His entire career has involved decisive common-sense leadership decision making, business, healthcare, city planning, budgeting, & much more. We also need to jumpstart our economy after COVID, and as a County Commissioner, it’s critical to know how the economy works and having been a proven leader in it.
As a former military base commander and local Collier County healthcare leader, he has dealt with housing and commercial development in the hundreds
D O N ’ T F O R G E T T O G E T O U T & V O T E ! !
of millions of dollars. He has worked closely with the Environmental Pro-tection Agency, had Red Tide affect his Florida military base (Eglin Air Force Base), and addressed it aggressively. Rick understands detailed contracts and how to work with developers who may have great ideas, but is it the best plan for our community?
Rick brings a 24-year Air Force officer leadership, as well as his deep and diverse business, healthcare, and local community volunteer to the position. Serving as a County Com-missioner is a huge responsibility for
making major decisions that affect us all for years to come. Experience & Qualifications matter… and we’ve got a lot to do in this County!
We need an already proven, experienced, and well-qualified District 1 County Commissioner who is fully prepared. For Rick this is not an election--but rather a “job interview” to pick a leader who has the Experience & Qualifications to understand, address, and take proper action for the good of District 1 and all of Collier County. He is not looking to be a politician… He’s looking to be our public servant.
He is honored to earn our vote during absentee ballot turn-in, early voting (Aug 8-15), or the day of the primary (Aug 18). He will not let us down!

Loggerhead Shrike
Length: 7.9 - 9 in.Weight: 1.2 - 1.8 oz.
Wingspan: 11 - 12.6 in.
I’ve seen loggerhead shrikes through-out the Vineyards. This photo was taken in Valley Oak. The loggerhead shrike is both a songbird and a small predator. It has a large head with a black face mask extending over its heavy hooked bill. Its head and back are silvery. Its black wings have white spots at the base, and its long black tail is edged in white.
Loggerhead shrikes breed from provinces of Canada throughout the U.S., inhabiting open country with short vegetation and well-spaced shrubs or low trees, particularly those with spines or thorns. They frequent agricultural fields, prairies,

golf courses, and cemeteries. They are often seen along mowed roadsides with access to fence lines and utility poles.
They have been declining in the northeast U.S., partly due to the use of pesticides in fields, which find their way into their prey, and loss of habitat. They are still doing well in the western and southern United States and are permanent Florida residents.
The loggerhead shrike eats small birds, mice, snakes, and insects. It has no talons, so it impales its prey on a thorn or barbed wire to be able to tear it apart, sometimes saving it for later. This earned it the nickname “butcher bird.” Its “pantry” contain-ing stored food can be used to attract a female.
Courting males feed and sing to females and perform a ritual dance or flight display. They are mostly mo-nogamous, although females occasionally raise one brood with one male and then take up with another mate for a second brood the same season.

Both sexes choose the nest site, placed 2.5 - 4 feet above the ground. And both sexes gather material. The female usually constructs the nest in the shape of an open cup, woven with rootlets, twigs, and bark and lined inside with soft material such as flowers, lichen, grass, moss, feathers, fur, string, or cloth. The nest’s outside diameter is about 6 inches, with an interior of about 4 inches; the cup is about 3 inches deep.
The female lays five or six eggs, which hatch in about 15 days. The babies are naked, blind, and helpless. They stay in the nest about 16 to 20 days before fledging.

KIDZ CORNERQuarantine Thoughts
With all this time on our hands, we have all found our hid-den talents. Mine happened to be culinary, and Daniella’s was crafting. Throughout these difficult times, we have all gotten to spend more time with our family. That can be seen as a pro or a con, depending on what way you look at it. For us, it was a pro because we were able to spend more quality time with the people we love. We played games, watched movies, swam, and did many other fun activities that helped to pass the time. Though these are dangerous times and everyone is aware of the cons of the virus, there are some pros that accompany the consequences. First and foremost, we all got to spend more time with our family, which we will appreciate in the long run. It really makes you appreciate your family and all they have done for you.
Next, pollution rates have gone down. The environment has truly benefited from this. The air is less polluted due to fewer people on the streets. Mother Nature is definitely grateful for this. Third, since we have had to stay at home, it is a refreshing break from our busy lives. It gives you perspective and real-ly makes you appreciate what you have. It makes you see the world in a different light.
Those are just some of the pros to brighten your day. I hope you all have found creative things to do at home, including taking a moment to be grateful for the things that you have and, most importantly, the people that you have. I hope you all are staying safe! Thank you for reading and have a fantastic day!

I want to share about a wonderful community effort that is happing right now in the Vineyards. Fellow resident and artist Susan Grunin is donating profits from the purchase of masks with her oil paintings on them to support local COVID-19 efforts. I know Susan, as she’s one of the first people I taught Mah Jongg to at the club in the Vineyards. (Fun fact, after a few Mah Jongg lessons, Susan traveled to play in tournaments!)
I have admired Susan’s paintings for a long time. A few years ago, I decided to have one printed on a tote bag. Then recently, I was on her website again and saw that she now sells her paintings printed on face masks, too. I loved the idea and started sharing with others. We all need a face mask these days, and I love wear-ing this “dress” mask!
By resident contributor Jeanne Randazzo
While sending out my monthly email to the 50+ ladies in my Mah Jongg club at VCC, I let them know about Susan’s masks. You can buy them on her website (or if she has them at home, she’ll drop them off in your mailbox), and she donates the profit to local food banks. Even though all of the horizontal artwork can be pur-chased on a mask, there’s a special category of colorful sunsets (which seems to be the most popular).
With so many people affected financially by COVID, I think it’s a wonderful way to contribute. If you want to look for yourself, here’s the link: https://susan-grunin.pixels.com/shop/face+masks.
By the way, if anyone has a tip on how to wear hoop earrings and a mask, let me know -- I haven’t solved that one yet!

Jan Face Glassman Jan Face GlassmanCollier County Republican State CommitteewomanA Proven Leader for ALL Republicans in Collier County
Many voters have asked what is a “State Committeeman” or “State Committeewoman”? It is a position elected by Republican voters in the county in which they live. (The Democrat Party has similar positions). State Committeemen (SCM) and State Com-mitteewomen (SCW) are the vital link between the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF), the State Executive Committee in Talla-
hassee, and the County Republican Execu-tive Committees (REC) in each of Florida’s 67 counties. These men and women are elected countywide during the 1st primary of a Presidential election year and serve a four-year term representing their County at the RPOF. They attend quarterly meet-ings, including an annual meeting of the RPOF State Executive Committee.
The State Committeewoman must develop and maintain strong working relationships with the County REC leadership and mem-bers, with the RPOF leadership, and representatives of other Counties. Her major responsibilities include acting as a liaison between the RPOF Executive Committee and the County Exec-utive Committee; bringing to the RPOF’s attention any activities within the county that may be harmful to the Party; assisting with district chairmen, county chairmen, and Party field directors in
promoting seminars, caucuses, and fund–raising events; reporting to the state Party on the Republican activity at the county level, and acting a spokesperson for the REC if there is a unified message agreed upon by the county REC and/or the RPOF.
Jan Face Glassman has a lifelong, proven track record of develop-ing and growing strong, long-term relationships with Republican leaders at all levels of government in Collier County, Florida and nationally. During her second term as State Committeewoman, she pledges to continue to work with women who are interested in leadership roles within the Collier Republican Party, includ-ing those interested in running for State Committeewoman in
the future, and assist them in developing relationships in Collier, throughout Flor-ida, and nationally. She will continue her efforts on behalf of the CCREC to grow Republican involvement throughout Collier
County and to raise the funds necessary to run successful cam-paigns in 2022 and 2024.
Jan is a true conservative. She grew up with New England values of independence, family, community service, and a hard work ethic. She believes in limited government and that the unintend-ed consequences of too many laws may do more damage than the benefits of those laws. Above all, Jan believes in personal responsibility and accountability to a higher power than any government.
Jan Face Glassman has been politically active for over 50 years with a focus on increasing the role of Republican women in politics. She has volunteered with federal, state, and local campaigns in Florida, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts and has formed, co-chaired, and actively participated in numerous women’s coalitions for state and national candidates.
Jan is a graduate of and served on the Board of Governors of the Vesta Roy Excellence in Public Service Series (EIPSS), a leadership training program for Republican women. The EIPSS exists in a number of states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Illinois, and is modeled after the Lugar Series As a highly-respected Republican leader, Jan has been invited to meet with women who are running for office from various countries including Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan, France, Indonesia, Afghanistan, and others to discuss women’s leadership as part of the World Affairs Organizations’ International Visitor Professional Development Leadership Exchange Program working with the US Department of State.
In NYC, while serving on the Board of Governors at the Women’s National Republican Club, she and David Webb co-founded the American Forum Series, the Black Republican Forum, and the Black Urban Forum in order to increase conservative political awareness of issues with women and minority populations.
As soon as she moved to Naples in 2010, Jan became actively involved in the local Republican Party. She has brought numerous speakers to Naples for Republican events to raise
funds for campaign activities and to increase involvement. Recent speakers have been KT McFarland, Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, and Corey Lewandowski. Jan has introduced new programs including ‘Cocktails and Conversation, by Invitation Only’ and Republican Women Make the Difference to grow involvement. Currently, Jan serves as the Collier County
Republican State Committeewoman to the RPOF and as the Event Chair for the Collier County Republican Executive Committee. She is a member of the Republican Women of Southwest Florida Federated, the Women’s Republican Club of Naples Federated, the Seacoast Republican Women, and the Women’s National Republican Club (the oldest women’s political club, founded by suffragettes.)
Jan is honored to be part of Maggie’s List, an organization that promotes her lifelong passion for increasing conservative women’s political involvement while at the same time honoring the political legacy of Margaret Chase Smith of Maine. Maggie’s List endorses and funds conservative women running for the U.S. House and Senate. Of the top 10 Republican women in DC listed in a recent article in ‘The Hill’, 9 were Maggie’s List endorsed. The 10th was Kellyanne Conway, who was not a candidate. This year Maggie’s list has 27 highly-qualified Congressional candidates across the country.
Most important to Jan are her New England roots and values. She is a strong believer in limited government and in personal responsibility and accountability. Jan grew up in Needham, MA, and summered in New Hampshire at a log cabin that she built with her family. Her time in New Hampshire instilled in her the importance of volunteering; and Jan believes
in actively volunteering in the community where she lives. In Granby, CT, she was active with the JC Women and a member of the high school mathematics review committee. In NYC, Jan co-founded Trendsetters’ Network, a not-for-profit organization focused on increasing awareness of young women in middle and high schools in the 5 boroughs in historically non-traditional careers for women, including politics.
In Naples, Jan has continued her community involvement and is a graduate of Greater Naples Leadership, Class of XXII, a program that helps proven leaders fulfill the non-profit and civic needs of greater Naples.
She has also continued her focus on helping young women build strong futures through her volunteer efforts with Pace, a highly successful, nationally recognized program for at-risk teenage girls that currently has 21 Centers throughout Florida. Jan has hosted “A Day on Capitol Hill” for Pace girls including visits with Congressmen, Senate Staff and private Capitol tours.
In May 2019, Jan was recognized by Pace as its 2019 Pacesetter for her volunteer efforts on their behalf since 2010 including hosting Dress Collection Parties and serving as Sponsorship Chair for the annual “Love That Dress” fundraiser.
Jan established and lead an ad hoc traffic committee made up of residents of Lely Resort, local officials, FDOT, and Collier Growth Management to address 2 different traffic fatalities and other serious traffic issues. She worked with the County and State teams to implement major intersection changes at “Lely Horses.” She continues to work with the County and resident team to implement changes on County roads within Lely Resort including a 4-way stop with flashing stop signs at the Sam Snead’s intersection; elephant tracks to direct drivers safely through key intersections; the removal and trimming of median plantings to improve a driver’s line of sight; and signs and directional traffic lines at the Celeste/Grand Lely intersection.
U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart recently read Jan into the 116th Congressional Record for her long-time dedication to her community and for helping other women and girls, all of which have had a significant impact on Southern Florida.
