Welcome to The Big Cheese 2019!It’s no exaggeration to say that Caerphilly has one of the most iconic Castles in Europe, and we are very proud of it. What better way to celebrate our 751 year old medieval Castle by opening its doors and welcoming the 22nd annual Big Cheese Festival. Over the weekend visitors can enjoy a refreshed layout, the introduction of an enticing range of street food and live music lounge style marquees with bars provided by local drink producers.

The festival is wrapped around Caerphilly Castle and brings it to life with Medieval re-enactment camps and battles, art, craft and retail stalls and three huge food halls. Not forgetting the star of the show – a dedicated cheese market with ten cheese producers.

Caerphilly Tourism Association have produced this guide and its members recognise the important role festivals and events play in the cultural life of the borough.

Living History Village - Caerphilly CastleThe Vikings – Blaeddau DuBe transported to c950 when the hiberno Norse Vikings who fought for the Welsh King in South Wales were settled in our land. The Freemen of Gwent portray the period 1350- 1420 when Kind Edward III was monarch. Wander through the middle age encampment and see life as it was in the late 14th and early 15th Century.

Castle Court shopping Centre has many high street retail names and a craft & food market taking place within the centre on Saturday 27th July. Also, on Saturday 27th July, even more local food & drink can be found at our resident Caerphilly Farmers’ Market in Twyn Community Centre and additional craft stalls will be dotted around the Cenotaph area.

FunfairOne of the biggest travelling funfairs in the country arrives in Caerphilly for The Big Cheese. With over 40 rides including some white knuckle rides not for the faint hearted!

Please note that no alcohol is permitted to be brought onto the event site. Alcohol will be confiscated and destroyed on entry by security staff, police or CCBC Community Safety Wardens.
