Life had changed for four little boys in the specials needs program in Boonville, their home had burned to the ground. This prompted a bus monitor, Judy Betts,to jump into action.Within a few short days Judy, along with her co-workers, hadgathered enough toys to “make their day” according to their mother. The boy’smother was beyond grateful, not knowing what to say. Betts didn’t miss a beat, she saw the children were in need and was determined that the need would be

met. A big ‘thank you’goes out to Betts forleading her team inBoonville in demonstra-tion to the communitythe “First Student Way”.(Judy Betts is fourthfrom the left in thephoto.)

MOVING TO ASSISTED LIVING

DOESN'T HAVE TO BE TRAUMATIC

DEAR DOCTOR K: We've finally con-vinced my mother to move to an as-sisted living facility. After spending thepast five decades in her current house, she is very nervous about the move. What can we, and she, do to make thetransition easier?

EAR READER: Assisted living facilitiesare designed for people who can't liveon their own because they need helpwith the tasks of everyday living. Thefacilities generally provide meals, helpwith taking medication, housekeeping, laundry and activities. They are notmeant for people who need round-the-clock nursing care.

No matter how clear the need, movingfrom one's home to an assisted livingfacility can be emotionally challenging.Realizing this, assisted living facilitiesoften have people on staff who canhelp people like your mother to man-age their feelings and make the transi-tion easier.

It shouldn't be hard for your mother tophysically adjust to an assisted living

facility. The environment is designed tomeet the needs of an aging body. Thereare no steps to navigate. The bath-rooms are adapted for walkers. Therewon't be any more reaching for heavypots and pans if the facility diningroom provides meals. Your mothermay feel comforted, too, if she bringspersonal items to her new living space. This may include artwork, family pho-tos or favorite furniture.

The new environment will allow yourmother to increase her physical activityand wellness. Assisted living facilitiesalways have exercise classes like tai chior chair yoga, and many offer physicaltherapy on campus. It's important tolearn which services are available and Iwould also encourage your mother toget to know others at her facility. Foralmost anyone, in any environment, themore you interact with others, themore you'll feel at home. An easy wayto meet others is to take part in themany activities offered at the facility. There is often a huge variety, such aspainting and memoir writing. And therewill likely be outings to museums, con-certs and sporting events. Taking partwill help your mother feel engaged andpurposeful -- and less forlorn about the

home she left behind.

I once had a patient who became awidow in her late 70s. She had lived inone house since she was a child: Herparents had given her and her newhusband the family home and movedto an apartment. But she was havingtrouble in her old three-level house --with the stairs, with handling cook-ware, with reaching things in the cabi-nets. Her kids found an assisted livingfacility.

As you'd imagine, she hated thethought of leaving the only home shehad ever known. However, she madethe move. A year later she said to me:"I loved my old home. But I realize Iwas starting to hate it, too. Every timesomething about it defeated me, I re-membered my earlier life -- and feltvery old. I feel younger now."
