What was the point?

• The Box Move is a science publication created through the collaboration of PLUMS and SPADES.

• It is built along the lines of the blog initiated by a group of SSE students of the same name: http://theboxmove.weebly.com

• The Blog started because we wanted to write about what we were studying and show how excited it made us.

• What we didn’t want to admit: We wanted to dispel the idea that studying science is a chore, and we wanted to convey that feeling of admiration.

What has it become?

The idea now is to do three things:

• To describe Science, from the courses to books, Music, Art, Literature, Politics, Social Sciences.

• As an introduction to studying Science in Pakistan.

• A display of current scientific research happening in Pakistan, what faculty members are doing, what students want to do.

What do we have to show?

Why do we want you?

• Because maybe we’re looking at this all wrong.

• Because Science students often can’t handle Social Sciences.

• We want writers, artists, editors, reporters, cartoonists, web designers who can popular science popular.

• Because this is a one-time thing. You will not be required to write for many months or be part of this project forever. You will however be part of the change.

What will the magazine look like?

• About 60-70 pages, in color.

• A faculty member will give advice based on how best to create an academic journal.

• The first section will be blog posts which cover a range of writings: social commentary, political issues, research methods, book reviews etc.

• The second section will include reports on new frontiers of scientific research.

• The third section will focus on the idea of Popular Science, explaining concepts in fun ways.

What is the need for Popular Science?

• Explaining science to children, O-Levels, A-Levels students in exciting, understandable ways.

• This is not just an idea for the magazine. We also want to make one video per scientific concept using interactive media, fun cartoons, thought-provoking analogies etc. that target laymen.

• Mix it up with other disciplines so as not to make it dry and boring.
